Sandisk (SNDK) is the nearest standalone flash and NAND alternative after Western Digital separated its businesses. Micron Technology (MU) and SK hynix (000660.KS) provide broader memory exposure, while Pure Storage (PSTG) and NetApp (NTAP) give you enterprise storage-platform exposure rather than component manufacturing. These stocks occupy different layers of the storage stack, so the right choice depends on whether you want HDDs, NAND, semiconductor memory, or storage systems.
Why Western Digital alternatives changed after the 2025 separation
Western Digital completed the separation of its HDD and Flash businesses on February 21, 2025. Western Digital retained the hard-disk-drive operation, while Sandisk became the standalone flash company. That means an investor choosing a substitute today is no longer comparing one company with two equally prominent storage businesses. The post-separation Western Digital is primarily a high-capacity HDD company.

Western Digital’s filing describes HDDs as “critical components in the worldwide data infrastructure market, powering the digital economy.” Its closest public-company comparison is therefore Seagate, not a flash manufacturer or an enterprise software vendor. If your thesis is about NAND, solid-state drives or flash demand, Sandisk is the more direct post-spin comparison. If your thesis is about data growth but you want exposure beyond one storage technology, Micron and SK hynix are broader memory choices. Pure Storage and NetApp sell infrastructure built around storage rather than making the underlying memory or disks.

The distinctions matter because HDD and flash have different performance characteristics, manufacturing economics, technology cycles and customer mixes. A storage-platform company can benefit from data growth without having its revenue tied directly to drive or wafer shipments. Conversely, a component company may provide purer exposure to storage demand but can be more sensitive to capacity additions, pricing and capital spending.

This is a business-model map, not a ranking. The companies cannot be treated as interchangeable tickers because they monetize different parts of the storage stack.
1. Seagate Technology (STX): the closest HDD substitute
What exposure it provides
Seagate is the most direct public-company alternative when the objective is high-capacity hard-drive exposure. Its fiscal 2025 reporting discusses competition in mass-capacity and legacy storage and describes its HAMR-based Mozaic platform for scaling HDD capacity. That makes Seagate the clearest peer for an investor who wants the same broad product layer as Western Digital after the spin.
Why an investor might choose it
- It provides a direct comparison with a company whose post-separation identity is centered on HDDs.
- Its documented product strategy is aimed at increasing capacity within the HDD form factor, including HAMR-based technology.
- Its mass-capacity positioning aligns with large-scale data-infrastructure demand rather than only consumer storage.
What it does not provide
Seagate is not a substitute for NAND or a broad semiconductor-memory portfolio. Buying it expresses a hard-drive and mass-capacity view, not a general view that every form of memory will grow at the same rate. An investor should also distinguish enterprise and cloud-drive demand from client or consumer-device demand when interpreting company results.

Seagate is the logical first comparison for someone asking, “What stock is like Western Digital?” when “like” means a publicly traded HDD manufacturer with mass-capacity exposure.
2. Sandisk (SNDK): the standalone flash and NAND alternative
What exposure it provides
Sandisk became the standalone flash company when the separation was completed on February 21, 2025. Its stated focus is NAND-flash storage devices and solutions for AI data centers, edge devices and consumers. It is therefore the closest product-layer alternative if your thesis is about flash memory, SSDs or NAND demand rather than magnetic disks.
Why the separation matters
Before the separation, Western Digital’s name could imply both HDD and flash exposure. After the separation, those exposures sit in different listed companies. A reader comparing a current Western Digital position with Sandisk should account for that structural change: Western Digital retained HDD operations, while Sandisk holds the flash business.
Best fit
Sandisk fits an investor seeking relatively focused NAND and flash exposure, especially where AI data centers, edge computing and consumer devices are part of the thesis. It is not an HDD peer, and its business should be evaluated using flash-market considerations rather than HDD-capacity assumptions.

3. Micron Technology (MU): diversified memory and SSD exposure
What exposure it provides
Micron reports DRAM, NAND and NOR products. Its portfolio includes SSDs and managed NAND serving data-center, client, consumer, automotive and industrial markets. That breadth makes Micron a memory-company alternative rather than a pure storage-device substitute.
How it differs from an HDD investment
Micron’s exposure spans memory types that support computing systems beyond storage alone. Its filing says SSD products offer “significant performance and features over hard disk drives, including smaller form factors, faster read and write speeds, higher reliability, and lower power consumption.” Those characteristics explain why SSDs can replace HDDs in some workloads, while HDDs can remain relevant where capacity per dollar and large-scale archival storage are priorities.
An investment in Micron therefore combines storage exposure with broader semiconductor-memory exposure. Results can reflect demand from servers, PCs, mobile devices, vehicles and industrial equipment, not only data-center storage arrays.
Best fit
Micron is suited to investors who want NAND and SSD participation but prefer a diversified memory portfolio that also includes DRAM and NOR. It is less suitable for someone seeking a narrow, HDD-only comparison.

4. SK hynix (000660.KS): memory, SSD and NAND Storage across markets
What exposure it provides
SK hynix’s documented product categories span DRAM, SSD and NAND Storage. Its markets include servers, networking, mobile, PC, consumer and automotive applications. Like Micron, it offers a broader memory thesis than an HDD manufacturer does.
Why the market mix matters
The company’s exposure reaches several hardware categories. Server and networking demand can connect it to data-center investment, while mobile, PC, consumer and automotive demand introduce different replacement cycles and economic sensitivities. That mix can make SK hynix useful when the goal is to participate in memory growth without concentrating entirely on one storage medium.
Access and listing considerations
The referenced listing is 000660.KS, indicating a Korean-market listing. Before buying, check whether your brokerage supports that market, what currency and settlement arrangements apply, and which tax and disclosure rules govern your account. Those practical issues are separate from the company’s product exposure but can materially affect implementation.

Best fit
SK hynix fits investors seeking international, diversified memory and storage exposure across server, networking, mobile, PC, consumer and automotive markets.
5. Pure Storage (PSTG): enterprise all-flash infrastructure
What exposure it provides
Pure Storage is an enterprise infrastructure company rather than a component manufacturer. Its fiscal 2025 filing describes the Pure Platform, FlashArray, FlashBlade and Evergreen subscriptions across on-premises, cloud and hosted workloads.
Why this is a different type of storage investment
Pure Storage sits higher in the stack. Instead of selling the disk or NAND die as the primary product, it provides all-flash systems and associated platform capabilities for organizations running applications and data services. Its subscription offerings introduce a recurring-services element that does not resemble a conventional drive-shipment model.
This exposure may appeal to an investor who believes enterprise customers will keep modernizing infrastructure and adopting flash-based systems, but it should not be treated as a one-for-one replacement for Western Digital. The economic drivers include enterprise IT budgets, platform adoption, deployment choices and subscription relationships, in addition to underlying flash demand.
Best fit
Pure Storage is most relevant when your thesis is about enterprise all-flash platforms and recurring infrastructure services rather than about manufacturing HDDs or NAND components.
6. NetApp (NTAP): unified storage and cloud data infrastructure
What exposure it provides
NetApp’s fiscal 2025 filing describes unified data storage solutions optimized for flash, disk and cloud. It also describes services embedded in Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. This gives investors exposure to storage infrastructure that can span physical systems and public-cloud environments.
The documented operating figure
NetApp reported a $4.1 billion all-flash-array annualized revenue run rate in fiscal 2025, up 14% year over year. The figure is an annualized run rate, not necessarily recognized revenue for the same period, so it should not be compared directly with a company’s reported annual sales without preserving that qualification.

Why it differs from component makers
NetApp’s unified approach can combine flash, disk and cloud resources. Its public-cloud portfolio is available on Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. That creates a storage-infrastructure thesis tied to enterprise data management and cloud adoption, rather than a pure view on HDD or NAND unit demand.
Best fit
NetApp suits investors who want hybrid-cloud and public-cloud data-infrastructure exposure, including a documented all-flash business, instead of direct ownership of a drive or memory manufacturer.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to choose among the alternatives
Use the following six-axis framework before selecting a ticker. The first question is the storage layer; the remaining questions determine how closely the stock matches your risk and return thesis.
| Axis | Question to answer | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Storage layer | Do you want HDD, NAND/SSD, semiconductor memory or a storage platform? | Determines whether the company is a direct product peer or a higher-level infrastructure play. |
| Business purity | How directly does revenue track storage products? | Focused companies can offer clearer exposure; diversified companies may dilute or broaden the thesis. |
| End-market mix | Is demand coming from cloud data centers, enterprise, client, consumer, automotive or industrial customers? | Changes the demand cycle and the types of customers affecting results. |
| Recurring services | Does the company sell subscriptions or cloud services in addition to products? | Introduces a services component that differs from shipment-driven hardware revenue. |
| Capital intensity and technology cycle | How exposed is the business to manufacturing investment and technology transitions? | Helps distinguish component-cycle risk from platform-adoption risk. |
| Geography, concentration and regulation | Where is the company listed and which customers, regions or rules matter? | Affects market access, currency, customer dependence and regulatory risk. |
Decision guide by investment objective
If you want the closest HDD comparison
Start with Seagate. Its mass-capacity and legacy-storage positioning and HAMR-based Mozaic platform make it the nearest documented public peer to post-spin Western Digital.
If you want focused flash exposure
Look at Sandisk. Its standalone identity is centered on NAND-flash storage devices and solutions, with stated applications in AI data centers, edge devices and consumer products.
If you want broader semiconductor-memory exposure
Compare Micron and SK hynix. Both extend beyond NAND into DRAM and other memory categories, with markets spanning data-center or server applications and additional client, mobile, consumer, automotive or industrial demand.
If you want enterprise storage platforms
Compare Pure Storage and NetApp. Pure Storage emphasizes all-flash infrastructure and Evergreen subscriptions, while NetApp combines unified storage for flash, disk and cloud with public-cloud services.
Best Value
If you want a diversified storage thesis rather than a single technology
A platform or broader memory company may fit better than an HDD specialist, but the trade-off is less direct exposure to any one storage technology. Define whether your thesis is about data growth itself, flash adoption, HDD capacity economics, enterprise modernization or cloud infrastructure before choosing.
Risks and practical checks before buying
Do not equate data growth with identical stock performance
More data does not guarantee that every storage company benefits equally. HDD, NAND, DRAM, SSD platforms and cloud services respond to different purchasing decisions and technology substitutions. A company can participate in the same broad data-infrastructure market while having very different revenue drivers.
Separate product replacement from total market growth
Micron’s filing highlights SSD advantages in size, speed, reliability and power consumption. Those advantages can support substitution away from HDDs in selected workloads. At the same time, a storage thesis should identify where HDD capacity remains relevant rather than assuming that SSD adoption eliminates every HDD use case.

Check listing and geographic exposure
SK hynix is referenced through its Korean listing, 000660.KS. Confirm trading access, currency conversion, settlement, tax treatment and disclosure requirements before placing an order. Similar checks apply to any security that is not listed in your home market.
Review customer and regulatory concentration
Storage suppliers and infrastructure vendors can depend on large cloud, enterprise, device or channel customers. Examine each company’s current filing for concentration, export controls, regional exposure and other regulatory constraints rather than assuming that a familiar product creates a diversified business.
Do not use stale valuation data
Current prices, valuation multiples, dividend yields and analyst targets are not included here. They change continuously and were not established by the cited company filings. Obtain current market data from a regulated brokerage or other reliable financial-data provider before making an investment decision.
A practical research checklist
- Write the thesis in one sentence. Specify HDD capacity, NAND and SSD adoption, diversified memory, all-flash enterprise systems or hybrid-cloud infrastructure.
- Choose the matching layer. Use Seagate for the closest HDD comparison, Sandisk for standalone flash, Micron or SK hynix for broader memory, and Pure Storage or NetApp for higher-level infrastructure.
- Map end markets. Note whether the company serves cloud data centers, servers, networking, PCs, mobile devices, consumers, automotive or industrial customers.
- Identify recurring revenue. Check whether subscriptions, hosted offerings or public-cloud services are material to the business model.
- Read the latest filing. Confirm the company’s current products, competitive language, geographic exposure, customer concentration and technology priorities.
- Check market access and risk controls. Verify listing availability, currency, taxes, position sizing and how much of your portfolio is already exposed to semiconductor or technology cycles.
- Update market data separately. Use current prices and valuation measures only after confirming the date, currency and methodology behind each figure.
Bottom line
There is no single replacement for Western Digital because the 2025 separation split HDD and flash exposure into different businesses. Seagate is the closest direct HDD alternative; Sandisk is the closest standalone NAND and flash alternative; Micron and SK hynix broaden the thesis into memory; and Pure Storage and NetApp move up to enterprise and cloud storage platforms. Select the company whose storage layer and end-market mix match your investment thesis, then verify current financial and market data before trading.
