If you want to play now, the best alternative to waiting for the PS6 is the platform that has the games, friends, and buying format you already want—not a console picked on headline specs alone. A PS5 is the most direct choice for someone committed to PlayStation; Xbox suits people whose games or community are there; a gaming PC offers storefront flexibility, while Steam Deck adds portable PC play. Sony had not announced a PS6 launch date in the sources available as of October 4, 2026, so the length of any wait is unknown.
Should you wait for the PS6?
Only wait if you are comfortable with an uncertain timeline and do not need a new system now. In an August 2026 report on an interview with Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki, he said a launch window for future-generation consoles had not been decided. That is a secondary report, not a formal PS6 announcement; the narrow takeaway is that no PS6 date had been announced in the sources available as of October 4, 2026. The date could change if Sony makes an official announcement.

PS5 and PS5 Pro: the straightforward PlayStation option
If your reason for waiting is to play PlayStation games, buying a PS5 now avoids switching ecosystems. Sony’s US direct store listing shows standard PS5 configurations and a 2 TB PS5 Pro; listings and prices are local and can change, so check your regional store before buying.

When PS5 Pro is worth considering
Sony released PS5 Pro on November 7, 2024. The company describes an upgraded GPU, faster memory, advanced ray tracing, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling. These enhancements apply to supported games and vary by title; PS5 Pro is not necessary to play new PS5 games.
At launch in 2024, Sony claimed PS5 Pro had 67% more compute units than the then-current PS5 and could render gameplay up to 45% faster. Those are Sony’s vendor claims from its September 10, 2024 launch announcement, not independent measurements or a promise of the same uplift in every game. Sony gave a US launch MSRP of $699.99; that is historical launch pricing, not a current quote.
The practical choice is between a standard PS5 and paying more for Pro-specific improvements in games that support them. Sony’s then-Platform Business Group CEO Hideaki Nishino described the goal as matching players with the option that fits their needs: “Whichever console option players choose, whether it’s PS5 or PS5 Pro, we wish to bring everyone the very best gaming experience that fits their needs.”

Xbox Series S and Series X: choose for games, friends, and format
Xbox is a sensible alternative when the games you want, the people you play with, or the services you use point to Xbox. Microsoft’s Series S product listing identifies it as all-digital, so it is not the right fit if you want to use physical game discs. Game Pass is a separate membership, as Microsoft’s listing notes.
Price-check carefully: Microsoft announced a worldwide price update effective August 1, 2026, with increases of US$100 for 512 GB console models and US$150 for 1 TB models; the 2 TB model was to be sunset. Those are announced changes, not live prices, and regional amounts and retailer pricing can differ. Check the current local listing and storage configuration before comparing it with a PS5.
Do not choose between PlayStation and Xbox on a generalized claim that one is categorically faster or better value. The available evidence does not establish a current, comprehensive hardware-performance ranking. Compare the specific games you want, your existing library and friends, whether you need a disc drive, and the local price and storage of the model you would actually buy.

Gaming PCs and Steam Deck: flexibility versus simplicity
Desktop gaming PC
A desktop PC is a better fit if you want PC storefronts, configurable hardware, or a computer-centered setup. It is not possible to give a reliable equivalent-build price or cost-per-frame verdict from the available comparisons: current build prices and like-for-like console performance figures are not established. Compare an actual parts list and local prices against the console options rather than assuming a PC is always cheaper or more expensive.
Steam Deck OLED
Valve’s Steam Deck technical page describes OLED models with 16 GB of onboard memory, SteamOS, SSD configurations, microSD expansion, and a 7.4-inch OLED display. It suits people who want portable PC play and Steam library access. It is a handheld rather than a direct substitute for a living-room console or a high-end desktop; check the exact configuration and current regional price.
Check game and subscription access before you buy
A subscription catalog is not a fixed, universal list: availability can differ by game, membership tier, and platform, and can change over time. Xbox’s official March 2026 catalog post distinguishes games available on Cloud, Xbox Series X|S, or PC and specifies applicable tiers. Treat it as a dated example, not a current full catalog or price list. Verify the exact title, platform, tier, and current terms before counting it as part of a system’s value.
Atlus announced Persona 6 for Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, PS5, and Steam. That example shows that a game may be planned for several platforms, but it does not mean every game is available everywhere or that platform libraries are equivalent. Check the publisher’s current listing for the title you care about, since a planned platform list can change.
Quick Recap
A practical way to make the choice
- List the games you actually want. Confirm which platforms each is available on, including any release timing or subscription conditions that matter to you.
- Account for your current library and friends. A platform that preserves the games you own or lets you play with your usual group may matter more than a specification difference.
- Decide whether you need discs. If you buy used or physical games, rule out all-digital configurations such as Xbox Series S.
- Compare real local costs. Check the price and storage of the exact console or PC configuration in your region. For subscriptions, include only the tier and games you will use, and verify current terms.
- Choose the format you will use. Pick a console for a straightforward living-room setup, a desktop PC for configurable hardware and PC storefronts, or Steam Deck for handheld play.
- Revisit waiting only if you are comfortable with uncertainty. No PS6 launch date was announced in the sources available as of October 4, 2026; decide whether playing now is worth more to you than waiting for an unconfirmed future system.
