Best Alternatives to VTI for a Total U.S. Stock-Market Portfolio

SCHB and ITOT are the closest alternatives to VTI when your objective is one fund covering the investable U.S. equity market. Both are broad-market products designed to include large-, mid-, and small-company exposure. VOO is different: it tracks the S&P 500 and is therefore a large-cap substitute, not a like-for-like total-market replacement.

All four funds listed by their issuers in 2026 carry a 0.03% expense ratio where stated, so the decision usually turns on index coverage, trading conditions, taxes, and whether the fund is available in your account rather than on the headline fee alone.

  1. SCHB for a Schwab broad-market ETF with a published 0.03% expense ratio.
  2. ITOT for an iShares core total-U.S.-market ETF whose name identifies an S&P total-market approach.
  3. VOO only when you deliberately want S&P 500 large-cap exposure rather than the smaller-company slice included by a total-market fund.

VTI itself tracks the Morningstar U.S. Total Market Index. Vanguard says that index represents approximately 100% of investable U.S. stocks across large-, mid-, small-, and micro-cap companies, and lists a 0.03% expense ratio on its 2026 product page. The closest substitute is therefore another fund with a broad or total-market mandate, not simply another low-cost U.S. stock ETF.

What VTI is designed to do

VTI is a single-fund U.S. equity allocation. Its stated objective is to follow the Morningstar U.S. Total Market Index, giving investors exposure across the capitalization range rather than concentrating on the largest companies. In practical terms, that means the portfolio is intended to include:

  • Large-cap companies that dominate major U.S. indexes.
  • Mid-cap businesses that are established but smaller than the largest constituents.
  • Small-cap companies with a smaller share of total market value.
  • Micro-cap companies that qualify for the investable universe under the index methodology.

The approximately 100% figure is an index-coverage description, not a promise that every listed U.S. security will be held in exactly the same proportion. Index rules, investability screens, corporate actions, sampling, and rebalancing determine the actual holdings. The fund’s published expense ratio is 0.03% as listed by Vanguard for 2026.

Side-by-side comparison

ETF Issuer description and benchmark Stated coverage Published expense ratio Role in a portfolio
VTI Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF; tracks the Morningstar U.S. Total Market Index Approximately 100% of investable U.S. stocks, including large-, mid-, small-, and micro-cap companies 0.03% (Vanguard 2026 product page) Broad total-U.S.-market core
SCHB Schwab U.S. Broad Market ETF; Schwab describes it as a broad-market product Broad U.S. equity exposure; no separate percentage-of-market figure is published 0.03% (Schwab 2026 comparison page) Closest broad-market substitute
ITOT iShares Core S&P Total U.S. Stock Market ETF Total-U.S.-market exposure implied by the product mandate; confirm current holdings and index rules in the prospectus Not stated in the issuer information Closest total-market substitute
VOO Vanguard S&P 500 ETF; tracks the S&P 500 Large U.S. companies; Vanguard describes the benchmark as dominated by large-cap stocks 0.03% (Vanguard 2026 product page) Large-cap alternative, not a full-market replacement

The table separates what is explicitly stated by each issuer from what should be checked in the current prospectus. Expense ratios, index construction, holdings, and availability can change, so verify the latest product page before trading.

SCHB: the closest Schwab alternative

SCHB is Schwab’s Broad Market ETF. Schwab lists a 0.03% expense ratio in its 2026 comparison material and positions the fund as a broad U.S. stock-market vehicle. That makes it a natural replacement when you want one ETF rather than a large-cap-only index.

Why SCHB resembles VTI

  • Both are intended as broad U.S. equity building blocks rather than sector funds.
  • Both are designed to reach beyond the largest companies, unlike an S&P 500-only fund.
  • The listed expense ratios are the same at 0.03% in the cited 2026 issuer pages.

What to verify before switching

Schwab’s published information does not identify a market-coverage percentage or provide a complete index-methodology comparison with Morningstar’s index. Review SCHB’s current prospectus for its benchmark name, constituent eligibility, rebalancing schedule, and treatment of micro-cap securities. A fund can be called “broad market” while using a different cutoff or sampling method than VTI. Those differences may change the exact holdings and weights even when the long-term objective appears similar.

ITOT: an iShares total-market option

ITOT is the iShares Core S&P Total U.S. Stock Market ETF. Its product name identifies a total-U.S.-market approach, placing it in the same decision category as VTI and SCHB for investors seeking one-fund domestic equity exposure.

Why ITOT can replace VTI

ITOT is built for investors who want a core U.S. stock holding rather than a narrow style, sector, or capitalization sleeve. The “total U.S. stock market” designation indicates that the fund is intended to include more than the largest companies. That makes its role different from VOO even if the largest holdings overlap heavily.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Information that is not established here

The issuer information does not state ITOT’s expense ratio, a market-coverage percentage, or detailed tracking statistics. Do not infer that its fee, holdings count, spread, or tracking difference is identical to VTI. Check the current iShares product page and prospectus for the exact benchmark, fee, securities-lending policy, portfolio-construction rules, and trading data available in your brokerage.

VOO: when a large-cap substitute is intentional

VOO tracks the S&P 500. Vanguard describes that benchmark as dominated by large U.S. companies and lists a 0.03% expense ratio on its 2026 product page. It is a widely used core holding, but its mandate is not the same as a total-market ETF.

The coverage trade-off

Choosing VOO means accepting an S&P 500 portfolio rather than intentionally owning the mid-, small-, and micro-cap companies represented in VTI’s stated investable-market objective. The largest U.S. companies can make up most of the market’s value, so the two funds may look similar in periods when mega-cap stocks lead. Similar-looking results do not change the underlying mandate: VOO is large-cap exposure, while VTI is designed to span the capitalization range.

When VOO may make sense

  • You want a deliberate large-cap allocation and will obtain smaller-company exposure elsewhere.
  • Your workplace plan or brokerage offers VOO but not a broad-market ETF.
  • Your investment policy specifically calls for S&P 500 exposure.

If your stated goal is a single total-U.S.-market fund, do not label VOO a like-for-like replacement. It can be a reasonable different choice, but the difference should be intentional.

Benchmark methodology matters more than the ticker

Two ETFs can both claim broad U.S. exposure and still produce different portfolios because their indexes answer different questions:

  • Eligible securities: Indexes may differ in how they treat new listings, real-estate companies, limited partnerships, foreign-incorporated firms, and companies with limited float.
  • Capitalization bands: “Total market” can use different thresholds for large-, mid-, small-, and micro-cap segments.
  • Weighting: Most broad-market indexes weight companies by market value, but their investability and float adjustments can vary.
  • Rebalancing: The schedule and rules for additions, deletions, and share-count changes affect turnover.
  • Implementation: A fund may hold every eligible security or use representative sampling, which can create small deviations from its index.

VTI’s named benchmark is the Morningstar U.S. Total Market Index. VOO’s is the S&P 500. SCHB is described by Schwab as broad market, while ITOT is named for the S&P Total U.S. Stock Market. Read the current fund documents if a precise index-to-index match matters to your investment policy.

Costs: expense ratio is only the first line

An expense ratio is deducted from fund assets and is an ongoing operating cost. Issuer product pages list 0.03% for VTI, SCHB, and VOO in 2026. ITOT’s current ratio is not stated in available issuer information, so it should be checked directly rather than assumed.

Trading costs

Your realized cost also depends on the bid-ask spread, brokerage commissions, order type, and the price at which an order executes. A fund with the same expense ratio can be more or less expensive to trade at a particular time. Spreads often change with market hours, volatility, and liquidity. Use a limit order when you need price control, and avoid judging a fund’s normal spread from a single volatile session.

Tracking difference

After fees, an ETF’s return can differ from its benchmark because of transaction costs, sampling, corporate-action timing, cash balances, securities lending, and tax effects inside the fund. No independent performance or tracking statistic is published for these funds, so there is no supported basis here for ranking these funds by realized return.

Diversification and portfolio construction

A total-market ETF gives you one decision for U.S. equity exposure, but it does not diversify outside the United States or outside stocks. You still need to decide whether your overall portfolio includes international shares, bonds, cash, or other assets.

Single-fund simplicity

Using VTI, SCHB, or ITOT as the domestic-stock core reduces the need to rebalance separate large-, mid-, and small-cap funds. The fund’s index performs that segmentation internally. This can simplify contributions and reduce the chance that one capitalization sleeve is accidentally neglected.

Building the exposure from multiple funds

You can combine VOO with separate mid- and small-cap funds, but doing so introduces more tickers, more rebalancing decisions, and potential overlap. The approach is not automatically better; it is useful only when you need control over the weights or the available account menu requires it. Compare the combined holdings and costs rather than assuming that three funds recreate a total-market index exactly.

Liquidity, spreads, and account availability

Before replacing an existing holding, check whether the proposed ETF is tradable in the account where the money actually sits. A fund can be a sound index choice yet impractical if your retirement plan, automated-investing service, or brokerage restricts purchases.

  • Brokerage access: Confirm that the ticker is available for purchases, recurring investments, fractional shares, and transfers if those features matter to you.
  • Order execution: Check the live bid and ask during the market session. Use the same observation period when comparing funds.
  • Fractional shares: If you invest small recurring amounts, verify whether your broker supports fractional ETF purchases for the specific ticker.
  • Transfers: Moving a position in kind may avoid an immediate sale, while selling in a taxable account can realize a gain or loss.

No liquidity ranking or spread measurement is published for these ETFs. Do not treat a fund’s brand recognition as proof of the best execution for your account.

Tax considerations when changing funds

Taxes depend on account type, cost basis, holding period, jurisdiction, and your personal tax situation. The ETF label alone does not determine the result.

Taxable brokerage accounts

Selling VTI to buy SCHB, ITOT, or VOO is generally a disposal for tax purposes in a taxable account. Before placing the order, review unrealized gains and losses, holding periods, and any tax-loss-harvesting plan. A lower expense ratio does not compensate for an avoidable taxable gain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tax-advantaged accounts

Inside an individual retirement account or another tax-advantaged account, selling and buying may not create the same immediate capital-gains reporting as a taxable sale, but plan rules and transaction costs still apply. Confirm the account’s restrictions and whether the replacement is available before trading.

Wash-sale and loss-harvesting decisions

If you sell at a loss and buy a substantially identical security, wash-sale rules may affect the loss deduction. The correct treatment depends on the transaction pattern and applicable tax law. Obtain professional advice when a switch is part of a deliberate loss-harvesting strategy.

A practical decision framework

Use these steps to select among the four funds without letting a familiar ticker decide for you:

  1. Define the exposure. Write “total U.S. market” if you want large-, mid-, small-, and micro-cap coverage. Write “S&P 500 large cap” only if that concentration is intentional.
  2. List eligible funds. In a total-market search, start with VTI, SCHB, and ITOT. Include VOO only if a large-cap mandate is acceptable.
  3. Read each current prospectus. Confirm the benchmark, eligibility rules, sampling policy, and expense ratio on the issuer’s latest documents.
  4. Compare trading conditions. Check the bid-ask spread, average volume information available to you, order support, and any brokerage fee.
  5. Check tax consequences. Calculate the gain or loss that a sale would realize and consider whether an in-kind transfer is possible.
  6. Choose the simplest implementation. If two funds meet your exposure and cost requirements, prefer the one your account supports reliably for recurring contributions and rebalancing.

How to switch from VTI without losing your allocation plan

  1. Record your current VTI shares, average cost, tax lots, and target percentage of the portfolio.
  2. Decide whether the replacement is a broad-market fund (SCHB or ITOT) or a deliberate large-cap fund (VOO).
  3. Open the issuer’s current fund page and prospectus; confirm the benchmark and fee on the day you place the order.
  4. Check the account’s trading window, fractional-share rules, settlement process, and order costs.
  5. In a taxable account, choose specific tax lots if your broker supports that instruction and calculate the potential gain or loss first.
  6. Enter the order using the order type appropriate to your need for price certainty. A market order prioritizes execution; a limit order sets a maximum purchase price or minimum sale price.
  7. After settlement, verify that the new position has the intended percentage and that any automatic investment instructions point to the new ticker.
  8. Update your written investment policy so future contributions do not accidentally buy both the old and new funds in unintended proportions.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling VOO “total market.” Its stated benchmark is the S&P 500, so it is a large-cap fund.
  • Choosing solely on 0.03%. VTI, SCHB, and VOO share the cited fee, while ITOT’s fee is not established in the available issuer information; trading costs and taxes can matter more for an individual transaction.
  • Assuming identical holdings. Broad-market labels do not guarantee identical constituent lists, weights, or micro-cap treatment.
  • Ignoring account restrictions. A theoretically suitable ETF is not useful if recurring purchases, fractional shares, or transfers are unavailable where you invest.
  • Trading during a stressed market without checking the spread. Volatility can widen execution costs even for a normally liquid ETF.
  • Creating accidental overlap. Holding VOO plus a total-market ETF increases exposure to the same large companies; review the combined portfolio, not just each ticker separately.
  • Forgetting tax lots. A replacement sale can create a taxable event even when the new fund has a similar objective.

How to review the choice over time

Review the fund when your account options change, the issuer publishes a revised prospectus, the expense ratio or benchmark changes, or your target allocation changes. Routine monitoring should focus on whether the ETF still performs its intended role, not on short-term returns. Compare the current benchmark description, holdings policy, fee, trading conditions, and account availability at the same time.

For a total-U.S.-market objective, SCHB and ITOT remain the closest categories to VTI based on issuer descriptions available for 2026. VOO belongs in the comparison when you want large-cap exposure, but it should not be presented as an equivalent replacement for the full investable-market mandate.
