For most teams replacing Visual Studio Code, Cursor is the closest AI-first editor, Zed is the strongest choice for low-latency multiplayer editing, Devin suits agent-led execution, GitHub Copilot keeps an existing IDE and GitHub workflow central, GitHub Codespaces provides reproducible browser-accessible environments, and Replit is optimized for browser-first building and deployment. JetBrains Fleet is another option when shared sessions and remote development matter.
The right choice depends less on raw completion quality than on how your team works: whether AI edits one line or runs multi-file tasks, whether people edit the same files simultaneously, how much governance you need, and whether costs are predictable. Prices and quotas below were checked on October 17, 2026, and can change.

Choose by workflow first
Use this decision path before comparing feature lists. A tool that matches your collaboration model will usually deliver more value than one with a longer AI feature list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- You want an AI-native desktop editor with agents and minimal migration. Start with Cursor. It is the most direct replacement for a VS Code-style workflow while adding multi-file agents, automations and, on higher plans, code hosting and AI code reviews.
- Several developers need to edit together in real time. Choose Zed if native speed, multiplayer editing and bring-your-own model keys are priorities. Consider Fleet when shared sessions or a common remote development environment fit your process better.
- You want an agent to execute larger chunks of work, not just suggest code. Evaluate Devin. Its team plan is designed around shared execution, integrations and administrative oversight rather than an editor-only experience.
- GitHub pull requests, policy controls and an existing IDE are non-negotiable. Keep the editor your team already knows and add GitHub Copilot. It works across major IDEs and extends assistance into explanations and other parts of the development lifecycle.
- Every developer needs a consistent, disposable environment from any device. Use GitHub Codespaces. Treat it as a cloud workspace paired with a browser editor or VS Code client, not as a one-for-one desktop editor replacement.
- You are prototyping and deploying from a browser. Replit combines an AI platform, agents, databases and integrations in one place. Confirm the live US plan selector before budgeting because its fetched pricing page does not show static amounts.

Cursor: the closest AI-native replacement
Why teams choose it
Cursor keeps the familiar project-and-file editor model while making AI a central interaction. Teams can ask for changes spanning multiple files, use automations and, on Premium and higher plans, access cloud agents, code hosting and AI code reviews. That combination makes it a practical first pilot when developers are comfortable with VS Code conventions but want more autonomous assistance.

Plans and cost behavior
Cursor lists Free at $0 per month, Plus at $8 per month, Premium at $30 per month, Super at $100 per month and Ultra at $200 per month. Teams starts at $30 or more per user per month, while Enterprise pricing is custom. Third-party model usage is billed separately at the provider’s API list price, so a flat seat comparison can understate the total when agents make many requests.
Team controls
The Teams plan adds centralized billing, usage analytics, team-wide privacy settings and SAML/OIDC single sign-on. Ask who can change privacy settings, which repositories agents may access and how usage alerts are handled before enabling cloud agents for a whole organization.
Migration checklist
- Import or recreate required extensions, formatter settings and language servers.
- Map existing keybindings and verify terminal, debugger and remote-development workflows.
- Set repository-level rules for generated code, secrets and review ownership before enabling agents.
- Run a two-week pilot with usage limits because model API overages are separate from the seat price.
Zed: real-time multiplayer with model flexibility
What makes it different
Zed states that every plan includes multiplayer collaboration. Developers can work in the same project with low-latency shared editing rather than handing off patches or screen-sharing. It also supports bring-your-own keys and external agents, which is useful when a team already has approved model providers or wants to keep model billing separate from editor billing.
Plans and included usage
Personal is free forever. Pro costs $10 per month and includes unlimited edit predictions plus $5 of included tokens. Business costs $30 per seat per month. Business adds organization-wide AI policies, data-governance controls, unified spend visibility and role-based access.
When Zed is the better team choice
- Pair programming and incident response require simultaneous editing.
- Developers need a fast native editor instead of a browser session.
- Security policy requires control over which model keys or external agents are used.
- Finance needs a clear view of organization-wide AI spend.
The trade-off is that teams must validate language tooling, extensions and remote workflows against their current stack. A multiplayer editor does not automatically reproduce every extension or debugging integration from VS Code.

Devin: for agent-led execution
How the model differs
Devin is aimed at delegating implementation work to an agent rather than limiting AI to inline completion. That makes it a candidate for issue-sized tasks, investigations and repetitive changes where the team can review the agent’s output asynchronously or collaborate around a shared execution.
Plans and administration
Devin’s listed plans are Free at $0, Pro at $20 per month and Max at $200 per month. Teams costs $80 per month for the team plan plus $40 per month for each full developer seat. Enterprise is listed as “Let’s talk.” The Teams plan includes sharing and collaboration, centralized billing, an admin dashboard with analytics, priority support and integrations for GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket.
The Tool Desk

- Define which repositories and branches an agent may read or modify.
- Require pull requests and human review for production changes.
- Set a policy for secrets, network access and commands that can run in a workspace.
- Measure completed, accepted work rather than raw agent activity.
Devin can reduce hands-on effort for well-scoped tasks, but the team still owns requirements, review, testing and release decisions. Its cost model should be compared with engineering time saved, not only with editor-seat prices.
GitHub Copilot: keep the existing IDE and GitHub workflow
What it provides
GitHub describes Copilot as contextual assistance across the software-development lifecycle. It offers inline suggestions, chat and code explanations and integrates with VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Neovim, Eclipse and other platforms. This makes it the lowest-switching-cost option when developers do not want to replace their editor.
Free limits and organization features
The Copilot Free tier is limited to 2,000 completions and 50 chat requests. Organization plans add license management, policy management and IP indemnity. Enterprise adds codebase indexing and GitHub.com integration. GitHub reports up to 75% higher satisfaction and up to 55% higher productivity; those figures are vendor-reported and should not be treated as an independent benchmark.

- The Keychron C2 (non-backlight version) is a 104 keys full size wired retro color keycaps mechanical keyboard made for Mac and Windows. Engineered to maximize your productivity with most popular full size layout with number pad.
- With a layout optimized for Mac, the C2 has all necessary multimedia and function keys (Num Lock works with Windows only), while compatible with Windows, and comes with a dedicated Siri or Cortana key. Extra keycaps for both Mac and Windows operating systems are included.
- Designed with reliability in mind, the C2 comes with USB Type-C wired connection with a braid cable, which ensures a constant power supply, and best to fit home and light gaming. Inclined bottom frame and 2 level adjustable feet (6˚ & 9˚) makes the C2 more comfortable to type.
- The pre-installed tactile Keychron switch providing unrivaled tactile responsiveness with up to 50 million keystroke durable lifespan.
- Outfitted the C2 Non-Backlight version with retro-inspired color scheme looks as good in the office as it does in the game room.
Best fit and limitations
Copilot is strongest when repositories, pull requests, issue tracking and identity already live in GitHub. It is not a multiplayer editor, so simultaneous editing still requires your existing collaboration method. Teams seeking autonomous multi-file execution or built-in shared sessions may need to pair it with another tool.
Recommended Free Tools
GitHub Codespaces: a cloud workspace, not just an editor
What you get
Codespaces launches fully configured environments from repositories and works from any device with internet access. Environments are isolated, and a developer can open a codespace directly from a pull request to investigate or fix a bug. This is valuable when onboarding, operating-system differences or local dependency drift slow teams down.
How to pair it with AI
Use a browser editor or a connected desktop client inside the codespace, then add the AI assistant that meets your organization’s policy. Codespaces supplies the reproducible machine; it does not, by itself, determine whether AI acts as autocomplete, chat or an autonomous agent.
Budget and operations
The material used here does not state a single current Codespaces price because compute and storage depend on the selected machine and usage. Check current GitHub billing before setting quotas. Establish automatic stop rules, retention policies and larger-machine approval so an apparently cheap pilot does not become an uncontrolled cloud bill.
Replit: browser-first creation and deployment
Why it appeals to prototyping teams
Replit presents an AI platform for creating, launching and growing apps, sites, tools and businesses in one place. Agents, databases and integrations are part of the same service, so a small team can move from an idea to a deployed prototype without assembling a local toolchain.

Pricing qualification
The pricing page provides monthly and yearly selectors and says yearly plans can be up to 10% off, but the fetched page does not render static plan amounts. Select the live US region and plan immediately before publication or purchase; do not copy a price from a different region or an earlier page state.
Trade-offs for established codebases
Browser convenience can be a major advantage for onboarding and quick demos. Before moving a mature repository, test local tooling, private package access, export and backup procedures, and how production credentials are isolated. A platform optimized for rapid building may not match every enterprise requirement for network topology or custom development environments.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.JetBrains Fleet: shared sessions and remote development
Collaboration model
Fleet allows other developers to connect to a session initiated on one user’s machine, or lets everyone connect to a shared remote development environment. That gives teams a choice between sharing a local context and standardizing on a remote one.
Editor and AI capabilities
Fleet includes completion, navigation, error detection, quick-fixes, refactoring and AI capabilities. Validate the language versions, build tools and plugins your repositories require; feature parity with your current editor should be demonstrated on a representative project rather than assumed.
Pricing uncertainty
The current Fleet page used for this comparison does not expose a US price. Verify the live regional price and licensing terms before comparing it with per-seat plans above.

How to evaluate collaboration beyond “shared editing”
Real-time editing
Real-time editing means two or more people can change the same project in one session, with cursor presence and conflict handling. Zed explicitly includes multiplayer on all plans. Fleet supports connected sessions and shared remote environments. Other products in this list emphasize repository, pull-request or agent collaboration instead of a persistent multiplayer canvas.
Asynchronous collaboration
Agent tasks, pull requests, code reviews and issue links let people work at different times. Devin and Cursor’s agent features can be useful here, while Copilot and Codespaces fit naturally into a Git-based review process. Decide whether your team needs simultaneous pairing, asynchronous delegation or both.
Governance collaboration
For larger teams, collaboration also means controlling access and spend. Look for SSO, role-based access, privacy settings, policy enforcement, audit information and centralized billing. Zed Business, Cursor Teams and Devin Teams list different combinations of these controls; map each requirement to a named plan before signing a contract.

| Level | Typical action | Best-matching options | Review requirement |
|---|---|---|---|

Higher autonomy increases both potential leverage and the blast radius of a mistaken instruction. Start with read-only repositories or disposable branches, then expand permissions after the team has measured failure modes.
Migration plan from Visual Studio Code
1. Inventory what must not break
- List languages, compilers, formatters, linters, debuggers and test runners.
- Record extensions that provide authentication, database access, containers or remote development.
- Export keybindings, snippets, workspace settings and task definitions.
- Document repository hooks, required environment variables and private package registries.
2. Select a representative pilot
Use one active service, one new project and one repository with remote or container requirements. Include at least two developers with different operating systems or roles. A toy project will hide the migration problems that matter most.
3. Establish AI and data rules
- Classify repositories by sensitivity and decide which may be sent to hosted agents.
- Disable secret exposure in prompts and generated logs.
- Require human review for dependency changes, authentication code and production configuration.
- Define retention, opt-out and model-provider rules in writing.
4. Measure outcomes
Track setup time, accepted changes, review time, test failures, reverted AI changes, collaboration interruptions and monthly spend. Do not use completion counts as a productivity proxy. Compare the same task types before and after migration.
5. Roll out in stages
- Run a small pilot with capped accounts or quotas.
- Publish a team configuration for formatters, language servers and keybindings.
- Train reviewers on agent-generated diffs and provenance.
- Expand repository access only after security and cost checks pass.
- Keep the old workflow available during the rollback window.
Cost and procurement checklist
- Separate seats from usage. Cursor’s third-party model calls are billed at API list price; Zed Pro includes $5 of tokens; other products may meter agents, compute or storage differently.
- Price the whole team. Devin Teams combines an $80 monthly team charge with $40 per full developer seat, while Cursor Teams starts at $30 or more per user monthly and Zed Business is $30 per seat monthly.
- Account for free-tier limits. GitHub Copilot Free allows 2,000 completions and 50 chat requests, which may be enough for evaluation but not a production team.
- Verify regional and changing prices. Replit’s yearly discount can be up to 10%, but its live selector must be checked; Fleet’s current US price is not stated on the referenced page.
- Budget cloud environments separately. Codespaces costs depend on compute and storage choices, so configure limits and automatic shutdown.
Security and governance questions to answer
Before approving any collaborative AI tool, ask:
- Can administrators enforce privacy and model-use policies by organization or repository?
- Is SAML or OIDC SSO available, and can roles restrict who creates agents or changes settings?
- Where are prompts, source files, terminal output and generated artifacts retained?
- Can the tool prevent access to secrets and production credentials?
- Are agent changes isolated in branches or workspaces with an auditable review path?
- How are usage, overages and abnormal activity surfaced to finance and security teams?
The answers differ by plan. Cursor Teams lists SAML/OIDC SSO and team privacy settings; Zed Business lists policies, governance controls and role-based access; Devin Teams lists an administrative dashboard and analytics; GitHub Copilot organization plans list policy management and IP indemnity.
