Best Alternatives to UPI for Accepting Online Business Payments in India

The best UPI alternative depends on who pays and how you fulfil orders. For most Indian websites, start with a hosted payment gateway that accepts cards, net banking and wallets through one checkout. Use NEFT, IMPS or RTGS when you collect invoice-led B2B payments and can reconcile transfers manually. Add an international card processor or wallet when overseas customers are important. These options can work alongside UPI rather than replacing it entirely.

There is no universally cheapest or highest-converting method. Compare customer geography, payment-method coverage, integration effort, settlement and reconciliation, refunds, disputes, recurring billing, compliance, foreign-exchange exposure and the provider’s eligibility rules.

Which UPI alternative should your business choose?

Alternative Best fit Main advantages Important trade-offs
Hosted payment gateway Ecommerce, SaaS and service checkout One integration for cards, net banking, wallets and sometimes additional methods; hosted checkout, webhooks and payment status tools Provider fees, KYC and onboarding, settlement timing, refunds, method coverage and recurring-payment support
Credit and debit cards Domestic and international customers who prefer familiar checkout Broad cross-border reach and no requirement for a UPI app Issuer or network declines, fraud controls, 3-D Secure, chargebacks and processing fees
Net banking Indian customers who want to pay from a bank account Direct bank-account payment without a UPI application Bank-by-bank availability, redirects, transaction limits and potentially lower conversion than saved methods
NEFT, IMPS or RTGS Invoices, B2B sales and high-value collections Account-to-account transfer without a payment gateway Manual instructions, payment-proof handling, reconciliation and settlement-window management
Prepaid wallets Mobile-first repeat customers Fast checkout for customers with a stored wallet balance Wallet reach, KYC requirements, redemption limits and provider-specific support
International processors or wallets Exporters, freelancers and global digital businesses Accept overseas cards or wallet balances and receive cross-border payouts Eligibility, export documentation, foreign-exchange cost, reserves, payout timing and regulatory restrictions

A gateway is usually the most practical first step for a consumer checkout. A bank transfer is often better for a negotiated invoice. An international processor is appropriate when the buyer or currency is outside India. You can offer more than one route, provided your order system clearly records which payment has settled.

What counts as an alternative to UPI?

UPI is one digital payment channel, not the only way to accept money online. A replacement can mean a different customer-facing method, such as a card or bank login, or a different collection process, such as sending bank details on an invoice. The distinction matters because checkout automation differs sharply between methods.

Automated checkout methods

Cards, net banking and wallets can be presented inside a hosted checkout or an embedded payment form. The provider generally returns a success, failure or pending status to your site and can send a webhook to confirm the final state. This supports automatic order creation, access provisioning and receipts.

Manual or semi-automated collection

NEFT, IMPS and RTGS transfers go directly to your bank account. Unless you build a bank-feed or reconciliation process, your team must match the transfer reference, amount and sender to an invoice before releasing goods or services. A screenshot or message from the customer is not reliable proof of settlement by itself.

Domestic versus international acceptance

Domestic methods are designed for Indian customers and rupee settlement. Cross-border processors can open access to overseas cards or wallets, but they introduce eligibility checks, foreign-exchange conversion, reserves, payout timing and export-compliance obligations. A provider that is excellent for international cards may not offer Indian local methods.

Hosted payment gateways: the broadest domestic substitute

A hosted gateway is the default choice when you want customers to complete payment on a website without building separate integrations for every method. The gateway hosts or supplies the checkout, handles authentication and communicates the result to your application. Depending on the provider and your account, the same checkout can present credit cards, debit cards, net banking and wallets, with UPI optionally remaining available.

Why a gateway works well

  • One integration: Your engineering team connects to one API or checkout library instead of implementing each bank, card network and wallet separately.
  • Payment-state callbacks: Webhooks can update an order when a payment is authorised, captured, failed, refunded or disputed.
  • Customer choice: A buyer who cannot or does not want to use UPI can select a card, bank login or wallet in the same flow.
  • Operational tools: Dashboards and APIs can provide payment search, refunds, settlement reports and dispute information, subject to the provider’s features.

Razorpay as a domestic gateway candidate

Razorpay’s official gateway description lists credit cards, debit cards, net banking, UPI and popular wallets. It also identifies Razorpay Payments as an RBI-authorised payment aggregator. That makes it a broad domestic candidate when a merchant wants one integration covering several Indian methods.

Do not treat that capability statement as a guarantee for every account. Before integrating, verify your business category, onboarding and KYC requirements, current pricing, settlement schedule, international-card availability, refund workflow and support for recurring payments. Products and eligibility can change, so record the terms that apply to your account.

Questions to ask any gateway before signing up

  • Which card networks, Indian banks and wallets are live for your merchant category?
  • Are international cards enabled, and in which currencies can you charge or settle?
  • When is a payment considered final for order fulfilment: authorisation, capture or settlement?
  • How are partial refunds, full refunds, failed refunds and expired authorisations represented in the API?
  • Does the gateway support subscriptions or recurring mandates for your product and customer geography?
  • What webhook retries, signature checks, idempotency controls and reconciliation reports are available?
  • Which documents are required for KYC, and what happens if your business model is reviewed after activation?

Accepting credit and debit cards directly

Cards are the most familiar non-UPI option for many Indian and overseas buyers. They are especially useful when a customer is shopping on a desktop, paying with a corporate card or purchasing from outside India. In practice, most businesses accept cards through a gateway or processor rather than connecting directly to a card network.

Square Reader for magstripe (USB-C)
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Get set up quickly with no long-term commitments. Download the Square Point of Sale app for free, create an account, and start taking payments anywhere.
  • Run your business all in one place with the free Square Point of Sale app. Track your sales, manage inventory, accept tips, send receipts digitally, and more.
  • Works with Apple devices with a Lightning connector.

What the customer experiences

The customer enters card details, and the issuer or processor may request an additional authentication step such as 3-D Secure. The transaction can be declined by the issuer, network, risk engine or merchant configuration even when the card is valid. Your checkout should show a useful retry path without creating duplicate orders.

Risks that differ from UPI

  • Chargebacks: A cardholder can dispute a transaction through the issuing bank. Keep order records, delivery evidence, usage logs and customer communications in a form your processor accepts.
  • Fraud exposure: Apply the processor’s risk tools, velocity limits and authentication settings. A successful authentication does not eliminate every form of fraud.
  • Issuer declines: Offer a second method when appropriate, and distinguish a temporary failure from a permanent decline in your user interface.
  • International complexity: Cross-border cards can involve currency conversion, additional screening and documentation that does not apply to a domestic rupee payment.

Do not advertise a universal card success rate or a fixed processing cost. The authoritative material available for this comparison does not provide a robust, cross-provider fee, success-rate or settlement-time benchmark.

Net banking for customers who prefer a bank login

Net banking lets an Indian customer select a bank, authenticate on the bank’s website and approve a payment from the account. It is a genuine UPI alternative for customers who do not use a UPI application or who prefer their bank’s web interface.

Where net banking fits

It can be useful for older customer groups, corporate buyers and users who are comfortable with a bank redirect but do not want to enter card details. It also provides another route when a customer’s UPI app, handle or daily limit is unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limitations to plan for

  • Availability depends on the banks and provider supported at the time of checkout.
  • Redirects and bank outages can interrupt the return to your website, leaving an order in a pending state.
  • Bank or transaction limits may prevent a high-value payment even when the account has sufficient funds.
  • The extra login and redirect steps can convert less well than a saved card or wallet.

Use server-side payment verification and webhook handling. Do not mark an order paid merely because the browser returned to a success page; the final status must come from the provider’s verified response.

NEFT, IMPS and RTGS for invoice-led payments

Direct bank transfer is often the most practical UPI alternative for B2B invoices, retainers, wholesale orders and high-value services. The customer transfers money to your account using the details on the invoice. The method works without a checkout gateway, but the administrative work moves to your business.

Choosing among the transfer rails

Rail Typical business use Operational consideration
IMPS Time-sensitive account-to-account payments Confirm current bank availability, limits and confirmation behaviour with your bank; do not promise instant order release until funds are verified.
NEFT Routine invoice payments and scheduled transfers Reconcile the transfer reference and credited amount before fulfilment; settlement timing can affect when an order is released.
RTGS High-value business collections Check the bank’s current eligibility, minimums, operating rules and confirmation process for the transaction.

The table describes business fit, not a guaranteed processing schedule or limit. Banks can change operating rules, and the sender’s bank may apply its own restrictions.

  • With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
  • Process chip cards in just two seconds.

How to design reliable bank-transfer instructions

  1. Create a unique invoice number for every order or customer payment request.
  2. Display the legal account name, bank name, account number, IFSC and the exact reference the payer must enter. Share these details only through a controlled customer channel.
  3. State whether the customer must pay the exact invoice amount, including tax and shipping, and how to handle a short or excess payment.
  4. Keep the order in an unpaid or pending state until your bank statement, banking API or finance team confirms the credit.
  5. Match the amount, reference, payer name and value date to the invoice. Escalate unmatched credits rather than guessing.
  6. Send a receipt and release the product or service only after verification.

What bank transfers cannot do automatically

A plain bank-transfer instruction does not automatically provide instant order confirmation, a built-in refund button or subscription billing. Refunds normally require a separate bank process and a record linking the returned amount to the original invoice. If your business needs immediate digital delivery, an automated gateway is usually safer.

Prepaid wallets for repeat and mobile-first customers

Prepaid wallets let customers pay from a stored balance. They can be fast for repeat purchases and can help users who do not want to type card details. Wallet availability is provider-specific, and a wallet being popular among consumers does not mean every merchant category can accept it.

Questions to verify

  • Which wallet brands and account types are supported for your merchant category?
  • Are customer KYC, redemption or transaction-value limits relevant to your use case?
  • Can you issue full and partial refunds to the wallet?
  • How are wallet payments represented in settlement reports and webhook payloads?
  • What happens when a wallet balance is insufficient or the wallet service is unavailable?

Wallets are best treated as an additional method inside a gateway unless your audience is concentrated in one wallet ecosystem and the provider offers a stable direct integration.

International processors and wallets for overseas customers

If you sell software, consulting, digital products or exports to customers outside India, an international processor or wallet may be more useful than an Indian-local-method gateway. These services can accept overseas cards or wallet balances and pay out to an eligible Indian business, subject to account review and foreign-exchange rules.

Stripe’s India limitation

Stripe’s current India documentation says India-based companies, LLPs and sole proprietorships can use Stripe for domestic and international payments when eligible. The same documentation explicitly excludes several local methods:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

"We don’t support local payment methods for businesses in India, such as UPI, Netbanking, Buy-Now-Pay-Later, and Equated Monthly Instalments (EMIs)."

Therefore, Stripe is a candidate for eligible merchants whose priority is card-led international acceptance, not a universal replacement for Indian UPI and net banking. If domestic customers need local methods, pair it with a suitable domestic option or choose a gateway that provides the required coverage.

  • Mobile card reader that accepts payments anywhere & anytime

Other cross-border names require account-level verification

Government and industry material names PayPal, Wise, Payoneer, Worldpay and Revolut in the cross-border segment serving Indian businesses. Treat these as a discovery list, not as a guarantee that a particular product is available to your entity, industry or destination country. Verify current India terms, supported payment flows, payout currencies, export documentation, reserves and fees directly with each provider.

Cross-border checks before accepting the first payment

  • Confirm that your legal entity, proprietorship or partnership is eligible for the service and intended transaction type.
  • Check whether the provider supports your countries, currencies, digital goods or services and refund policy.
  • Understand foreign-exchange conversion, intermediary-bank deductions, payout timing and any rolling reserve or delayed settlement.
  • Maintain invoices, contracts, customer identity information and export records required by your bank, tax adviser or regulator.
  • Plan for disputes in the customer’s currency and for a payout being held during a compliance review.

How to choose by business model

Retail ecommerce

Use a hosted gateway with cards, net banking and wallets, and retain UPI if your customers use it. The key requirement is a reliable payment-status webhook, stock reservation logic and automated refund support. A manual bank-transfer option can be added for high-value orders, but it should not be the only route for a catalogue with instant fulfilment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SaaS and subscriptions

Prioritise recurring-payment support, mandate rules, failed-renewal handling and customer self-service. Confirm that the provider supports your customer geography and billing frequency. A gateway that handles one-time cards well may not support recurring debits in the way your product requires.

Professional services and agencies

Offer card checkout for smaller invoices and NEFT, IMPS or RTGS instructions for negotiated retainers. Use a unique invoice identifier and keep service commencement conditional on confirmed funds. For overseas clients, add a cross-border processor after checking export and payout requirements.

Freelancers and digital creators

For Indian clients, a gateway or invoice-linked bank transfer may be sufficient. For overseas clients, compare international card and wallet coverage, currency conversion and the documentation your bank requests. Avoid promising a payout date until your account’s settlement schedule is confirmed.

Wholesale and high-value B2B

Bank transfers can reduce checkout complexity when buyers already operate through purchase orders. Build a reconciliation queue, escalation path for partial payments and a formal refund process. A gateway remains useful when multiple buyers need immediate online confirmation.

Implementation: a practical setup sequence

Set up a hosted gateway

  1. Define the methods your customers actually need: cards, net banking, wallets, international cards or recurring billing.
  2. Complete the provider’s business verification and KYC using the legal entity and bank account that will receive settlement.
  3. Use the provider’s test environment to create an order, open checkout and simulate success, failure, cancellation, timeout and duplicate-click cases.
  4. Verify webhook signatures on your server. Store the provider payment ID, your order ID, amount, currency and every status transition.
  5. Make order creation idempotent so a browser retry or repeated webhook cannot create two fulfilments.
  6. Capture or confirm the payment according to the provider’s documented flow, then release goods or access only after server-side verification.
  7. Test full, partial and failed refunds, and reconcile a settlement report against your internal ledger before going live.

Add NEFT, IMPS or RTGS instructions

  1. Create a unique invoice and reference for each payment request.
  2. Show verified beneficiary details and the exact amount due through a secure invoice or account portal.
  3. Provide a form for the payer to submit the reference, but label the order unpaid until the credit is confirmed.
  4. Import or review bank transactions on a defined schedule and match them to open invoices.
  5. Handle underpayments, overpayments, duplicate transfers and unidentified credits in separate queues.
  6. Issue a receipt and fulfil only after your reconciliation rule is met.

Launch an international payment option

  1. Confirm entity and product eligibility for every country and currency you intend to serve.
  2. Complete identity, business and bank verification before advertising the method.
  3. Configure displayed currency, settlement currency, refund currency and customer invoices consistently.
  4. Document foreign-exchange charges, reserve policy, payout timing and evidence required for export compliance.
  5. Run a low-value live test, reconcile the payout and verify how a dispute or refund appears before scaling traffic.

Security, compliance and customer experience

Protect the payment flow

  • Use hosted fields or the provider’s checkout where possible so sensitive card data does not pass through systems that do not need it.
  • Keep secret keys on the server, rotate them when staff or vendors change and restrict dashboard access by role.
  • Validate webhook signatures and reject replayed or malformed events.
  • Use HTTPS, clear session expiry and a visible support route for customers stuck after a bank redirect.
  • Log enough information to investigate a payment without storing unnecessary sensitive data.

Meet operational obligations

Payment aggregators, gateways and prepaid instruments operate within regulatory frameworks that include onboarding, settlement and customer-protection requirements. RBI material identifies cards, net banking, mobile banking, UPI, USSD and Aadhaar-enabled modes as digital payment channels, and its payment-system directions describe prepaid payment instruments and the roles of payment aggregators and gateways in ecommerce. A 2025 Government of India list also includes debit and credit cards, IMPS, NEFT, RTGS, AePS, NETC and PPIs among available digital payment modes. Those classifications do not remove your obligation to check your own tax, consumer-protection, data-security, export and sector-specific requirements.

  • Great battery capability with an additional charging station.
  • A truly portable device. Stay in control of your business, wherever you go.

Make method choice clear

Show the final payable amount, currency, refund terms and expected confirmation behaviour before the customer selects a method. If a bank transfer may take manual verification, say so. If an overseas card can be held for review, explain that support may request additional information. Clear expectations reduce duplicate attempts and support tickets.

Costs, settlement and measurement

There is no authoritative, cross-provider figure that ranks these methods by fee, success rate or settlement speed. Your actual cost depends on the provider contract, customer geography, card type, currency, risk controls, refunds, disputes, reserves and your business category.

Build a total-cost view

  • Transaction or gateway fee, including any applicable tax.
  • Foreign-exchange spread and intermediary-bank deductions for cross-border payments.
  • Chargeback, refund or failed-payment costs.
  • Engineering and maintenance effort for APIs, webhooks and reconciliation.
  • Finance-team time for bank-transfer matching and exception handling.
  • Reserve or delayed-settlement impact on working capital.

Track more than conversion

Measure method selection, payment success, pending duration, duplicate attempts, refund completion, chargebacks, reconciliation exceptions and time to settlement. Segment by device, customer country, order value and payment method. A method with a slightly higher fee may still be preferable if it reduces support work or prevents abandoned checkouts.

Common failure modes and fixes

The customer paid but the order is still pending

Check the provider dashboard and webhook delivery before asking the customer to pay again. For a bank transfer, match the bank credit and reference. Do not rely only on a browser redirect or screenshot.

Card payments fail repeatedly

Display a clear decline message, let the customer retry once, and offer another enabled method. Check issuer-response codes, risk rules, 3-D Secure configuration and whether international cards are permitted for the account.

Net banking returns an error after bank authentication

Keep the order pending while querying the server-side status. Provide a support path and avoid creating a second order automatically. The bank redirect can fail even when the customer has left the bank page.

Two payments created one order

Use an idempotency key tied to your internal order, store every provider transaction ID and make fulfilment conditional on one verified successful payment. Route later successful attempts to a refund or manual-review queue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A cross-border payout is delayed

Review account notifications, reserve terms, required invoices and export documentation. Do not promise the customer a payout date until the provider confirms the hold has cleared.

A transfer cannot be matched

Place the credit in an unidentified-payment ledger, request the remittance advice from the payer and keep the related order unpaid. Never allocate an unmatched amount based solely on a similar value or name.

Decision checklist

  • Are most buyers in India, overseas or split between both?
  • Do customers need cards, net banking, wallets, recurring billing or only an invoice?
  • Can your team support webhook integration and automated refunds?
  • Can your finance process reconcile bank transfers every business day?
  • What KYC, business-category and export documents can you provide?
  • How much delay can your cash flow tolerate before settlement?
  • What evidence will you retain for refunds, disputes and customer support?
  • Have you verified current provider terms rather than relying on an old feature list?

Bottom line

For a normal Indian ecommerce or service website, a hosted gateway that offers cards, net banking and wallets is the strongest general-purpose alternative to relying on UPI alone. Add NEFT, IMPS or RTGS when your sales process is invoice-led and your team can reconcile credits. Use an international processor or wallet for overseas customers only after checking India eligibility, currency costs, reserves, payout timing and documentation. Stripe’s India account documentation specifically excludes local UPI and net banking, while a domestic gateway such as Razorpay describes broader Indian method coverage; neither statement should be treated as a substitute for checking the terms of your own account.
