It does not provide Tor circuits, onion-service access, or integrated censorship circumvention.
For ordinary daily browsing, Privacy Guides points casual users toward Firefox when they want a Chrome alternative, and toward Brave when Chromium compatibility matters. Choose Tor Browser itself when your priority is network-level anonymity, onion services, or censorship circumvention. A private or incognito window in any of these browsers only limits data stored on your device; it does not make you anonymous online.

Which Tor Browser alternative should you choose?
| Browser | Best fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Mullvad Browser | Strong anti-fingerprinting and private-by-default browsing without Tor routing | No Tor circuits, onion services, or integrated censorship circumvention; private mode clears browsing data when you exit, which limits convenience |
| Firefox | Flexible everyday browsing with a non-Chromium engine | It is an everyday browser, not an anonymity network |
| Brave | Users who need Chromium compatibility and built-in tracker protections | Private windows do not stop sites from tracking you, and Brave does not provide Tor’s network anonymity by default |
| Tor Browser | Network anonymity, onion services, and censorship circumvention | Its privacy model is tied to Tor, so it is less like a conventional network-neutral browser |
| DuckDuckGo Browser | Privacy-conscious mobile browsing | The cited material does not establish it as a replacement for Tor’s network-level anonymity |
There is no single “most private” browser for every situation. The right choice depends on whether you need to hide your IP address from sites, resist browser fingerprinting, support Chromium-dependent websites, preserve logins between sessions, or reach blocked services.

Private, incognito, and private-tab modes mainly control what remains on the device after the window closes. The Tor Project explains that these modes can erase local history, cookies, and session information, but they do not conceal your activity from websites, internet providers, employers, school networks, or other observers that can monitor the connection. They also do not prevent a site from recognizing a browser fingerprint.

What a private window can do
- Remove local browsing history and other session data when the private session ends, depending on the browser and the data type.
- Prevent the next person using the same device from seeing an ordinary history entry or an active private-session cookie.
- Provide a temporary session for websites where you do not want an existing login to be reused.
What it cannot do
- Hide your IP address from the websites you visit.
- Prevent a network operator from seeing connection metadata or, in some cases, the domains you contact.
- Stop websites from collecting information during the session.
- Make your browser fingerprint blend into a larger anonymity set.
The Tor Project summarizes the distinction plainly: “Incognito mode” and “private tabs” do not make you anonymous on the Internet. Treat a private window as local session hygiene, not as a substitute for Tor.
Why Tor Browser is different
Tor Browser combines browser-level privacy defenses with a network route designed to separate you from the destination site. Traffic is sent through the Tor network rather than directly from your normal connection. As a result, a local observer does not see the names of the sites you visit in the same way as with a direct connection, while a website sees a Tor network address instead of your real IP address.
Tor-specific protections
- Tor circuits: your traffic is routed through Tor relays instead of taking a direct path to each site.
- Circuit isolation: Tor Browser separates site activity into circuits so that unrelated sites are less likely to correlate the same network identity.
- New identity controls: Tor Browser integrates controls for obtaining a fresh browsing identity when a situation calls for it.
- Onion services: it can reach sites that are available only through Tor.
- Integrated censorship circumvention: it includes Tor-focused tools for connecting in environments where direct Tor access is blocked.
These features are why a tracker-blocking browser or a private window should not be described as “anonymous.” Blocking trackers and clearing local data address different problems from hiding the network origin of a connection.
Mullvad Browser: the closest browser-level alternative
The Tor Project describes Mullvad Browser as “Tor Browser without the Tor Network.” That is the clearest way to understand its role: it carries over many of the Tor Project’s browser privacy ideas, but connects to sites without Tor circuits. Third-party trackers and cookies are blocked by default, and private mode is enabled as part of its default behavior.

What Mullvad Browser is good at
- Anti-fingerprinting out of the box: its design aims to make users look more alike instead of encouraging every user to create a unique configuration.
- Private-by-default sessions: browsing data is cleared when you leave the browser, reducing persistent local records.
- Familiar web access: because it does not send traffic through Tor, it avoids the Tor network’s circuit and onion-service model when you simply need a conventional connection.
- Optional VPN use: the official FAQ says a VPN can be used with Mullvad Browser, but it is optional. A VPN changes the network path; it does not turn the browser into Tor Browser.
What it does not replace
- It does not provide Tor circuits or Tor’s network-level separation from your real IP address.
- It does not open onion services.
- It does not include Tor Browser’s integrated censorship-circumvention workflow.
- It does not provide the same circuit-isolation and new-identity integration.
The customization trap
Privacy Guides cautions that modifying Mullvad Browser beyond its supplied security levels can make your fingerprint more distinctive. Adding unusual extensions, changing many browser settings, or using a rare combination of fonts and display options may make you easier to recognize. The privacy advantage comes partly from sharing a common configuration with other users, so “more settings” is not automatically “more privacy.”
That default behavior also has a practical cost: clearing data at exit makes it harder to keep long-lived logins, shopping carts, or work sessions. If persistent sessions are central to your routine, Firefox or Brave may be more convenient, while Mullvad Browser is better suited to disposable or compartmentalized sessions.
Firefox: the flexible everyday choice
Privacy Guides recommends Firefox to casual users who want a Chrome alternative. Its main distinction in this comparison is that it uses a non-Chromium browser engine, giving you an alternative to the large Chromium compatibility ecosystem while retaining broad everyday web support.
Choose Firefox when
- You want a conventional browser for work, school, banking, and media rather than a Tor-routed session.
- You value flexibility and the ability to decide which privacy controls and extensions fit your workflow.
- You prefer not to depend on a Chromium-based engine.
- You need saved logins, tabs, and ongoing sessions that a persistent everyday profile can provide.
Understand the boundary
Firefox is not presented by Privacy Guides as an anonymity network. A Firefox private window still provides only local-session privacy, and ordinary Firefox browsing does not hide your real IP address from the sites you visit. Its flexibility is a convenience advantage, but extensive customization can also make a profile more unusual. Use a private window when you need a temporary local session, not as a claim of anonymity.

Brave: Chromium compatibility with built-in protections
Brave is the practical choice when a site, web application, or extension requires Chromium compatibility. Brave’s own materials describe built-in protections against trackers and other unwanted web activity. Those materials are vendor-authored, so treat the feature descriptions as documentation of Brave’s design rather than an independent ranking against other browsers.
Choose Brave when
- A Chromium-based engine is important for compatibility with a work application, extension, or site.
- You want tracker protections enabled without assembling a privacy configuration from scratch.
- You need a conventional browser that can retain logins and sessions.
Do not confuse Brave’s private window with anonymity
Brave’s own overview says private windows do not stop tracking by the sites you visit. A private window can keep local history and session data from being retained in the normal profile, but it does not hide your IP address, defeat every form of online tracking, or provide Tor’s circuit routing. If your requirement is network anonymity, use Tor Browser rather than relying on a private Brave window.
DuckDuckGo Browser: a mobile-oriented privacy option
DuckDuckGo Browser is included here as a mobile-oriented option for readers who want privacy features in a simpler phone-focused browser. The material available for this comparison does not establish it as a substitute for Tor’s network-level anonymity. Do not select it on the assumption that tracker blocking, cookie controls, or private tabs conceal your network address.
Use the same test you would apply to any alternative: ask whether the browser changes the network route, how it handles fingerprinting, whether it supports the sites and extensions you need, and what happens to logins and local data when a session ends.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose in five steps
- Define what must stay private. If the concern is only other people using your computer, a private window may be sufficient. If websites must not see your real IP address, you need a network-level solution such as Tor Browser.
- Decide whether Tor is required. Select Tor Browser when you need onion services, circuit isolation, Tor’s network route, or integrated censorship circumvention. Select an alternative only when those functions are not part of the requirement.
- Choose your compatibility target. Pick Brave when Chromium compatibility is a deciding requirement. Pick Firefox when you want a non-Chromium everyday browser. Mullvad Browser is the anti-fingerprinting choice when ordinary direct connections are acceptable.
- Decide whether sessions should persist. Mullvad Browser’s private-by-default behavior and clearing at exit favor short-lived sessions. A conventional Firefox or Brave profile is more suitable for saved logins and ongoing work.
- Keep the privacy configuration ordinary. In Mullvad Browser especially, avoid unnecessary changes that make your setup unusual. In every browser, remember that a private window changes local storage behavior, not the identity presented to websites.
Safe setup practices for each option
Mullvad Browser
- Install the current build from the official Mullvad Browser or Tor Project distribution.
- Start with the shipped privacy and security settings rather than importing a heavily customized profile.
- Use its private-by-default behavior for sessions that should not remain on the device.
- Do not add extensions or change security levels unless you understand the fingerprint and compatibility consequences.
- If you require a VPN, treat it as a separate network decision; it is optional and does not add Tor circuits.
Firefox
- Install the current release from Mozilla’s official distribution.
- Use a normal profile when you need saved logins and an ongoing workspace.
- Open a private window for a temporary local session, while remembering that it does not hide your IP address.
- Add only the extensions and privacy changes you can maintain. More customization can make a profile less common.
Brave
- Install the current release from Brave’s official distribution.
- Leave its built-in protection settings enabled unless a specific site requires an exception.
- Use a private window for local-session separation, not for anonymity.
- Choose Brave over a non-Chromium browser when compatibility with Chromium-dependent sites or extensions is the deciding factor.
Tor Browser
- Install the current release from the official Tor Project distribution.
- Use it when the task requires Tor routing, onion services, or censorship circumvention.
- Avoid unnecessary extensions and unusual configuration changes that can reduce the value of a shared browser profile.
- Keep its integrated privacy controls intact instead of trying to turn it into a conventional, highly customized browser.
DuckDuckGo Browser
- Use it for the mobile-oriented privacy features documented by its publisher.
- Check whether the sites, logins, and extensions you need are supported on your device.
- Do not treat its private tabs or tracker controls as evidence of Tor-level anonymity.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“I opened an incognito tab, so my provider cannot see me.”
Private mode does not conceal your connection from the network. Close the tab if you only wanted local cleanup; choose Tor Browser if hiding the network origin is the actual requirement.
“A tracker blocker makes me anonymous.”
Tracker blocking reduces some forms of web collection, but it does not replace Tor routing or automatically defeat browser fingerprinting. Match the tool to the threat rather than using “private” as a synonym for “anonymous.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“I customized Mullvad Browser to make it safer.”
Privacy Guides warns that changes beyond its security levels can make your fingerprint more distinct. Return to the supplied defaults when compatibility permits, and add changes only for a clear, understood need.
Best Value
“A VPN turns any browser into Tor Browser.”
A VPN and Tor solve different routing and trust problems. The Tor Project says VPN use with Mullvad Browser is optional; using one does not add Tor circuits, onion-service access, or Tor Browser’s identity controls.
“This site is slow, so the browser is bad.”
No controlled, current speed comparison is established for these choices. Performance can vary with the site, network, device, extensions, and routing. Do not infer a universal winner from one page load or an anecdotal test.
“A site broke, so I should disable every protection.”
First determine whether the site needs a persistent login, a specific browser engine, or a script that conflicts with a privacy setting. Use Firefox or Brave for a compatibility-focused everyday profile, and reserve Tor or Mullvad Browser for tasks where their privacy model is the priority. Avoid making broad, permanent changes to a profile used for sensitive browsing.
Bottom line
Mullvad Browser is the best direct alternative when you want Tor Browser’s anti-fingerprinting approach without sending traffic through Tor. Firefox is the balanced non-Chromium choice for ordinary browsing, and Brave is the practical option when Chromium compatibility matters. Neither replaces Tor Browser’s network anonymity. Keep Tor Browser for onion services, censorship circumvention, and situations where hiding your real IP address and separating traffic through Tor are the central requirements.
