Choose the vivo X500 Pro if the Pro Max is too large, the vivo X300 Ultra if you want a wider range of native focal lengths and optional extenders, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra if Leica-branded hardware and a 1-inch main sensor matter most, or the OPPO Find X9 Ultra if a 300mm-equivalent teleconverter is your priority. These are specification-led matches, not a claim that any one phone produces universally better photographs.
Quick answer: which phone should replace the vivo X500 Pro Max?
The vivo X500 Pro Max is a large, camera-first phone announced for China in September 2026. Its headline specification is a 200MP ZEISS APO telephoto camera with support for a vivo ZEISS extender reaching an equivalent 400mm. The China suggested price starts at CNY 6,999 for the 12GB-plus-256GB configuration, although that is not a global price or a guarantee of current street pricing.

Availability is a major part of this decision. A TechRadar launch report dated September 21, 2026 described the X500 series as China-exclusive at launch, while noting UK availability for the Xiaomi 17 Ultra and OPPO Find X9 Ultra at that time. OPPO’s own April 21, 2026 announcement identifies Singapore sales channels for the Find X9 Ultra. Treat those reports as dated launch information, not live inventory.

What the vivo X500 Pro Max establishes as the baseline
Large display and flagship positioning
vivo’s China product material lists a 6.85-inch 2K display for the X500 Pro Max. In the same family comparison, the X500 Pro is listed at 6.36 inches and the standard X500 at 6.59 inches. That difference is substantial in one-handed use, pocketability and weight distribution, so screen size should be considered before comparing camera specifications.
Telephoto hardware rather than a simple megapixel race
The Pro Max uses a 200MP ZEISS APO telephoto camera, and vivo says it supports an equivalent-400mm vivo ZEISS extender. Those are manufacturer specifications. They describe the sensor, lens and accessory system, but they do not establish how the phone will resolve fine detail, control flare, focus on moving subjects or record video in every lighting condition.
Price and configuration caveat
vivo’s China listing gives a suggested starting price of CNY 6,999 for 12GB of memory and 256GB of storage. Other configurations cost more. Because this is a China suggested retail price, do not convert it directly into a local price expectation: taxes, distribution, currency movement, import costs and warranty terms can all change the total.

The table deliberately stays within figures published by the manufacturers or the dated launch reporting. It does not rank image quality, because the available material does not provide a controlled, independent side-by-side test.
vivo X500 Pro: the smaller same-family alternative
Why it is the logical first substitute
The X500 Pro changes the physical experience without moving to another camera platform. vivo’s official comparison places its screen at 6.36 inches, compared with 6.85 inches on the Pro Max. That is the clearest evidence-backed reason to choose it: a substantially smaller display in the same X500 line.
A smaller phone can be easier to grip while walking, faster to operate with one hand and less conspicuous when used as a daily phone rather than a dedicated camera. It may also fit pockets and vehicle mounts that do not suit a very large handset. Those are practical benefits, not camera-test results.

What you give up or still need to verify
The cited vivo comparison establishes the screen-size difference but does not provide a complete, independently measured comparison of camera sensors, battery endurance, thermal behaviour or accessory compatibility. Do not assume that a smaller body contains every Pro Max component. Check the exact regional model number, camera list, storage tier, network bands and supported extender before ordering.
If you want the Pro Max because of the 200MP ZEISS APO telephoto and its stated 400mm-equivalent extender support, ask the seller to confirm whether the Pro has the same telephoto hardware and whether the accessory is electrically and mechanically compatible. A family name alone is not proof of identical cameras.
Who should choose it
- Choose the X500 Pro when the Pro Max’s physical size is your main objection.
- Choose it when a smaller display matters more than having the largest possible viewfinder area.
- Do not choose it solely on the assumption that it delivers the same long-range photography; the cited comparison does not establish that.
vivo X300 Ultra: the modular focal-length alternative
A different way to build a camera phone
The vivo X300 Ultra is not simply a smaller or cheaper version of the X500 Pro Max. vivo’s global product material describes three deliberately distinct cameras: a 14mm ultra-wide, a 35mm documentary camera and an 85mm telephoto camera. That spread is useful for architecture and landscapes, everyday reportage and portraits or moderate compression without constantly relying on digital cropping.
Extenders and the Photographer Kit
vivo lists optional 200mm- and 400mm-equivalent extender options for the X300 Ultra and also offers a Photographer Kit. The modular approach can make the phone more useful for wildlife, field sports, the moon and distant stage subjects, but it adds equipment to carry, mount and protect. An extender can also change balance, handling and setup time compared with a bare phone.
Before buying, confirm exactly which extender is included in the package you are considering. A phone listing may show a compatible accessory without including it in the box. Check the kit contents, attachment method, case requirements and whether the accessory is supported by your local model and software.

Why it may be better for photographers who switch perspectives
The X300 Ultra’s strength is choice at capture time. A 14mm lens can solve a cramped interior or expansive landscape without stitching. A 35mm view suits documentary work where context matters. An 85mm perspective can separate a subject more naturally than a wide camera crop. These focal-length descriptions come from vivo; they do not guarantee equal sharpness, autofocus speed or colour matching between cameras.

Who should choose it
- Choose the X300 Ultra if you would rather have several native perspectives than one headline telephoto specification.
- Choose it if you are willing to carry an extender or Photographer Kit for occasional long-range work.
- Choose it when your subjects vary from interiors to people to distant details and you want a camera layout built around that variety.
Xiaomi 17 Ultra: Leica-branded hardware and a large main sensor
The specification case
Xiaomi’s global specifications list a 50MP main camera with a 1-inch sensor and a 200MP telephoto camera for the Xiaomi 17 Ultra. The phone also uses Leica-branded camera hardware. For buyers who spend more time at the main camera than at maximum telephoto reach, a 1-inch sensor is a meaningful design distinction on paper: it is intended to provide a larger imaging area than the smaller sensors commonly used in phones.
The 200MP telephoto gives Xiaomi a clear long-range proposition as well, although megapixel count alone cannot tell you how the camera performs. Lens quality, sensor size, stabilisation, autofocus, processing and the final output resolution all affect results.
How it differs from the vivo approach
The vivo X500 Pro Max’s published story centres on a 200MP ZEISS APO telephoto and an equivalent-400mm extender. Xiaomi’s published story combines a 1-inch 50MP main camera with a 200MP telephoto and Leica branding. Those are different priorities rather than a simple hierarchy. A landscape photographer who works mostly at the main camera may prefer Xiaomi’s sensor specification; someone committed to an add-on ultra-long setup may prefer the vivo accessory path.
Availability and purchase checks
The September 21, 2026 launch coverage cited UK availability for the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, but availability changes by country and retailer. Verify the exact model number, supported 4G and 5G bands, local firmware features, language options, contactless-payment support, warranty service and return rights. A model intended for another market can be perfectly functional yet inconvenient if its software or service coverage does not match your needs.
Who should choose it
- Choose the Xiaomi 17 Ultra when the 1-inch main sensor is more compelling to you than a 400mm-equivalent accessory claim.
- Choose it when Leica-branded imaging hardware is part of your buying brief.
- Choose it only after confirming that the version sold in your country supports the networks and services you use.
OPPO Find X9 Ultra: the dedicated long-reach option
What OPPO actually claims
In its April 21, 2026 announcement, OPPO describes a Find X9 Ultra teleconverter reaching 300mm equivalent and delivering 13x optical zoom. That makes it the clearest alternative for a buyer whose central requirement is distant-subject reach through a dedicated add-on rather than a phone-only zoom mode.
“300mm equivalent” is a field-of-view convention, not a promise that every photograph will look like one taken with a 300mm interchangeable-lens camera. The result still depends on the phone’s sensor, stabilisation, focus tracking, atmospheric conditions and the converter’s alignment.

Accessory trade-offs
A teleconverter can extend the useful range for wildlife, sports, travel landmarks and performances, but it introduces a second item to store and mount. Check whether the converter is sold separately, which case or bracket it requires, and whether the package includes the adapter. Carrying an accessory also means more opportunities for dust, scratches, misplaced parts or a missed shot while assembling it.
Regional availability
OPPO’s announcement names Singapore retail channels for the Find X9 Ultra. That does not establish availability in every other country. The dated TechRadar launch report mentioned UK availability, but inventory and regional configurations can change. Confirm local stock and service terms directly before paying, especially if you are importing.
Who should choose it
- Choose the Find X9 Ultra if 300mm-equivalent framing and 13x optical zoom solve a specific shooting problem.
- Choose it if you accept a converter-based workflow and have verified that the accessory is available for your exact phone.
- Do not select it solely because 13x is a larger number than another phone’s zoom label; the labels may describe different optical and computational systems.
How to choose among these alternatives
Start with the phone’s physical size
If the Pro Max feels too large, the vivo X500 Pro is the only option in this shortlist supported by a direct same-family screen comparison: 6.36 inches versus 6.85 inches. If a large display is useful for framing, editing or reading, moving to a smaller model may solve one problem while creating another.
Choose native focal lengths for everyday shooting
The X300 Ultra is the most explicit fit for people who think in focal lengths. Its 14mm, 35mm and 85mm cameras cover three different photographic jobs before an extender is attached. This is preferable when you frequently move between interiors, street scenes and portraits.
Choose the main sensor when most photos are taken at one camera
The Xiaomi 17 Ultra’s published 1-inch, 50MP main-camera specification is the strongest case in this group for buyers who prioritise the primary camera. It does not automatically make the phone superior in every scene, but it identifies a different hardware emphasis from a telephoto-led design.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose an extender only for a real reach requirement
Both vivo and OPPO describe accessory-based long-range systems, but the advertised focal lengths differ: vivo cites 400mm-equivalent support for the X500 Pro Max and X300 Ultra’s extender options, while OPPO cites 300mm equivalent and 13x optical zoom for the Find X9 Ultra teleconverter. Decide based on the subjects you actually photograph, then budget for the accessory, case and storage.

Do not use megapixels as a final ranking
The shortlist contains several 200MP claims, but megapixels are only one part of a camera system. A smaller output with better focus, stabilisation, exposure and processing can be more useful than a nominally higher-resolution file. The available manufacturer material does not provide a controlled test that would justify declaring one phone’s image quality the winner.
Regional availability, software and warranty checks
These phones may be sold in different configurations depending on country. The X500 series was reported as China-exclusive at launch, while the Find X9 Ultra announcement specifically named Singapore channels. Even when a retailer offers international shipping, the handset may not be intended for your market.
- Confirm the exact model number. Do not rely on a product name alone; regional variants can differ in bands, storage and firmware.
- Check network bands with your carrier. Verify the frequencies used for 4G, 5G, roaming and local 5G standalone service.
- Read the software description. Confirm language availability, Google-service support where relevant, notification behaviour, call recording rules and update policy for the model sold to you.
- Verify warranty geography. Ask whether repairs are handled in your country or require international shipping, and whether the camera accessory is covered separately.
- Check return rights and taxes. Import VAT, duties, brokerage fees and return postage can erase the apparent price advantage of a grey-market listing.
- Confirm accessory compatibility. Extenders, cases, brackets and Photographer Kits may be model-specific and may not be included with the phone.
What is not established by the published specifications
The manufacturer pages establish the named sensor resolutions, focal lengths, display sizes, accessory claims and, for the Pro Max, a China suggested price. They do not establish a universal winner for detail, skin tones, night photography, portrait separation, video stabilisation, battery life, charging speed, heat management or durability.

Do not treat the CNY 6,999 figure as a worldwide price, the 200MP labels as equivalent image quality, or an equivalent focal length as proof that two accessories behave identically. A fair comparison would require the same scenes, lighting, firmware, output settings and independent measurements across all phones, and that evidence is not supplied here.
A practical buying checklist
- Write down your most common subjects: people, interiors, wildlife, sports, travel or distant stage scenes.
- Choose whether you prefer a smaller phone, more native focal lengths, a large main sensor or an add-on teleconverter.
- Set a total budget that includes the phone, tax, case, extender or kit and any import fees.
- Compare the exact regional model rather than a global product name.
- Confirm network bands, software language and services before ordering.
- Ask whether the advertised accessory is included, optional or unavailable in your market.
- Read the warranty and return conditions, particularly for imported devices.
- Buy from a seller that states storage, memory, model number and regional firmware clearly.
Verdict
There is no single replacement that improves every aspect of the vivo X500 Pro Max. The vivo X500 Pro is the sensible answer to the size problem. The vivo X300 Ultra is the strongest fit for photographers who want a 14mm-to-85mm native range and optional modular reach. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra is the specification-led choice for a 1-inch main sensor and Leica-branded camera system. The OPPO Find X9 Ultra is the specialist pick when a 300mm-equivalent, 13x optical teleconverter addresses a genuine need.
Before choosing, verify local stock, model bands, software, warranty and accessory support. Those practical details can matter more than a headline megapixel count or focal-length number.
