1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe best Steam Machine alternative depends on where the games are rendered. Choose a compact gaming PC with a discrete GPU for dependable local play, a docked handheld PC if you also want portable gaming, or a basic mini PC with cloud gaming when low hardware cost matters more than independence from servers and your internet connection. These are different setups, not interchangeable products.
Three practical ways to play PC games on a living-room TV
A living-room PC needs more than a small case. You need enough graphics performance for the games you intend to play, reliable video output to the television, a controller-friendly interface, acceptable fan noise, and a way to handle updates without turning the sofa into a desk. The following table separates the three main approaches.

| Approach | Best for | What to evaluate | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact gaming desktop or powerful mini PC | A fixed TV setup that renders games locally | GPU and processor, cooling, noise, ports, dimensions, upgradeability and total price | Small enclosures can limit graphics options, expansion and thermal headroom |
| Handheld gaming PC with a TV dock | One computer for portable play and occasional big-screen use | Operating system, game compatibility, video-output support, dock, controllers, storage, battery and weight | Docking, Windows navigation and power limits can be less seamless than a dedicated desktop |
| Basic mini PC plus cloud gaming | Streaming supported games while keeping local hardware small and inexpensive | Service catalogue, subscription, network speed and latency, Ethernet or Wi-Fi, ports and price | You depend on the service, its supported games and a stable internet connection |
A small-form-factor custom PC is a fourth option for people who want to choose every component. It can provide a better upgrade path than a sealed mini PC, but the final size, cost, power draw and assembly difficulty depend on the parts you select.

Compact gaming PCs: the closest fixed replacement
If the machine will live beside the television and you want games to run locally, start with a compact desktop or mini PC that has genuinely strong graphics hardware. “Mini PC” describes the enclosure, not a performance level. Some models are intended for office work, emulation, simple games or cloud clients; others include a discrete GPU capable of demanding modern titles. Windows Central’s current mini-PC guide distinguishes those categories and names the HP Z2 Mini (G1a) and ASUS ROG NUC (2025) as examples of compact systems with powerful graphics for local gaming. Those descriptions are editorial examples rather than controlled benchmark results, and the exact configuration matters.

Check the graphics configuration, not the product family
- Confirm whether the model uses integrated graphics or a dedicated GPU. Integrated graphics can be suitable for older, competitive or less demanding games but are not automatically suitable for current AAA releases.
- Check the installed memory and whether it is replaceable. Integrated graphics share system memory, so capacity and memory configuration can affect performance.
- Verify the processor, GPU model, power limit and cooling in the exact regional SKU. A model sold with several processor or graphics choices can have very different results.
- Look for the video outputs your TV accepts, such as HDMI or DisplayPort with an appropriate adapter, and make sure the output supports the resolution and refresh rate you plan to use.
Living-room advantages and trade-offs
A compact desktop gives you the most predictable local experience: install games directly, use any controller supported by the operating system, and continue playing if an online service is unavailable. It also avoids handheld battery limits. The trade-offs are permanent desk-side hardware, a separate controller and the need to manage fan noise. A tiny enclosure may use a mobile-class GPU, restrict upgrades or require a proprietary power adapter. Read the service manual before assuming that memory, storage or graphics can be replaced.
PC Gamer’s October 8, 2026 report describes the Pimax Spation as a smaller PC intended for high-end PC virtual reality. It illustrates how compact PCs can target demanding graphics, but a VR-focused design is not automatically the best-value choice for ordinary TV gaming. Consider its ports, acoustics, controller support and graphics configuration for your use rather than treating its VR orientation as proof of superior living-room suitability.
How to configure a compact PC for the sofa
- Install the operating system, graphics driver and motherboard or system firmware updates before moving the computer to the TV.
- Connect the PC directly to the television for initial setup so you can read text and troubleshoot without relying on wireless streaming.
- Set the TV as the main display, choose the television’s native resolution, and select a refresh rate supported by both devices.
- Pair a controller over USB or Bluetooth. Keep a keyboard and mouse available for launchers, driver dialogs and recovery.
- Install the game clients you need, then enable a controller-friendly interface or a desktop shortcut that can be reached from the sofa.
- Test a demanding game for at least the length of a normal session. Watch for sustained fan noise, thermal throttling, crashes and HDMI dropouts before hiding the PC in a cabinet.
Handheld gaming PCs with a TV dock
A handheld can become a living-room PC when its USB-C or other video output supports an external display and you use a compatible dock. This route combines a portable screen and battery with a larger display, but the exact experience depends on the handheld’s operating system, ports and power profile. Windows Central’s handheld comparison describes docked TV use for the Legion Go 2 and names the JSAUX 6-in-1 Docking Station as an example. Treat that as an example of the accessory category, not a universal compatibility guarantee; check the exact handheld, dock, charger and television before buying.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
What a dock must provide
- Video output: The handheld must support display output through its port, and the dock must expose a compatible HDMI or DisplayPort connection.
- Power delivery: A dock and charger should provide enough wattage for the handheld’s performance mode. A low-power charger can cause reduced performance or battery drain during play.
- Controller and accessory ports: USB ports let you connect wired controllers, a keyboard, Ethernet or storage. A 6-in-1 design may include several of these, but confirm the actual port layout.
- Physical fit and cooling: A case on the handheld may prevent it from seating correctly, and a dock should not block vents.
- Display negotiation: The dock, cable and TV must agree on resolution and refresh rate. Keep a second HDMI cable available if the screen remains blank.
Connection procedure
- Update the handheld’s operating system, graphics driver and dock firmware if the manufacturer provides one.
- Connect the charger to the dock’s power-input port, then connect the dock to the TV with HDMI or the supported display cable.
- Insert or connect the handheld and wait for the operating system to detect the external display.
- In display settings, choose duplicate or second-screen-only mode according to whether you want the handheld screen active. Set the TV’s native resolution and a supported refresh rate.
- Pair the living-room controller. If the handheld’s launcher is difficult to navigate with a controller, leave a small keyboard nearby for setup and troubleshooting.
- Start a game and check audio output, controller mapping, charging status and performance at the same time. Some handhelds reduce their power mode when they are not receiving sufficient power from the dock.
Handheld specifications to compare
Handhelds differ in operating system, ergonomics, display, storage and game compatibility. Windows models can use the broad Windows PC ecosystem but may expose desktop menus and launchers that are awkward from a couch. SteamOS-based devices offer a console-like interface and a different compatibility profile. Neither operating system universally runs more games or performs better; compatibility varies by title, anti-cheat technology, launcher and driver.
| Device example | Listed specifications | What the figures do and do not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS ROG Ally family | Windows 11; Ryzen Z1 or Z1 Extreme variants; 7-inch 1,920 × 1,080 IPS display at 120 Hz; 16 GB memory; 512 GB SSD; 40 Wh battery; 608 g | These figures are listed by Pocket Tactics in its guide updated September 25, 2026. Confirm the exact SKU and region. They are not a benchmark or battery-life result. |
| ASUS ROG XBOX Ally X20 (2026) | Windows 11; 7.4-inch 1080p 120 Hz OLED display; AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor | These are manufacturer-listed specifications from ASUS Republic of Gamers, accessed October 13, 2026. They do not establish independent performance or endurance. |
Screen resolution and refresh rate describe the handheld panel, not necessarily the signal you will get on a television. A game may render internally below the TV’s native resolution, and the dock or cable may impose a lower refresh rate. Storage also deserves attention: a 512 GB drive can fill quickly after the operating system, updates and several large games are installed.
Mini PC plus cloud gaming
Cloud gaming changes the hardware requirement. The mini PC decodes a video stream and sends controller input; remote servers render the game. Windows Central’s mini-PC guide separates this use from local AAA rendering. A modest mini PC can therefore be a sensible client when the games you want are supported by your chosen service and your network is dependable.

Confirm the service before choosing hardware
- Check that each target game is currently supported in the service’s catalogue. Ownership of a game on another PC store does not automatically make it streamable.
- Check whether the service requires a subscription, a separate game purchase, or both.
- Review regional availability, supported operating systems, controller support and maximum stream resolution or refresh rate.
- Confirm how saves, mods, multiplayer accounts and third-party launchers work. Cloud environments may not support every local-PC feature.
Service catalogues and policies change, so verify these details on the provider’s current page before committing. Do not buy a cloud-only setup for a game that is merely rumored or temporarily available.

- Use wired Ethernet from the mini PC to the router when practical. It removes one wireless link and makes troubleshooting easier.
- If you must use Wi-Fi, place the mini PC and router in the same room or use a strong, uncongested band. Avoid putting the PC inside a closed cabinet.
- Test at the times you normally play, not only during a quiet afternoon. Other household traffic can increase latency or cause stream quality to fall.
- Connect the controller directly to the mini PC or use a receiver with a clear path. A second wireless hop can add input delay.
- Run the service’s own connection test and play a representative title before cancelling a local-install option.
Cloud gaming’s advantage is low local hardware demand and easy access to supported games on a small, quiet box. Its costs include any recurring subscription, network equipment and the loss of control when the service is unavailable, changes its catalogue or suffers an outage. It is a poor fit for unreliable broadband, strict data caps or games that are not supported.
Small-form-factor custom PCs
A custom small-form-factor build is for readers who value standard components and future upgrades more than turnkey simplicity. You can select a desktop processor, a graphics card that fits the case, replaceable storage and memory, and a cooling system sized for sustained play. The design work is also the risk: a graphics card may fit physically but exceed the case’s power or cooling limits, and a quiet fan curve may require undervolting or a larger enclosure.

Plan the build around constraints
- Choose the graphics card and power supply together, then verify the card’s length, thickness, power connectors and recommended airflow.
- Measure the case, including clearance for the cooler, memory, storage and cables. Manufacturer dimensions can exclude protruding connectors.
- Budget for the operating system, controller, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth adapter if needed, and a reliable HDMI or DisplayPort cable.
- Decide whether you can assemble and troubleshoot the machine. A prebuilt compact PC costs more for convenience but shifts warranty and support responsibilities to the vendor.
No specific parts list or tested build is established here, so treat custom construction as a category rather than a promised bill of materials or price advantage.

Common failure points and fixes
The TV shows no picture
Confirm that the handheld or PC actually supports video output on the connected port, then reseat the dock, charger and HDMI cable. Select the correct TV input, try a lower resolution or refresh rate, and test the computer directly without the dock. If direct output works, the dock, power delivery or cable is the likely fault.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The game runs but feels slow
First identify whether the bottleneck is local rendering or streaming. On a local PC, check that the game is using the intended GPU, lower demanding settings such as ray tracing, and ensure airflow is not blocked. On a handheld, connect adequate power and select its appropriate performance mode. In the cloud, test Ethernet, stop competing network traffic and inspect latency rather than lowering graphics settings that are rendered remotely.

Controllers are not detected
Pair the controller before launching the game, check the operating system’s game-controller panel, and try a wired connection. Some launchers capture input differently from the game itself; a controller-friendly launcher or a keyboard may be needed to reach the correct settings.
The system is too loud in a cabinet
Do not enclose a compact PC or docked handheld in a space that blocks intake and exhaust vents. Move it into open air, clean dust filters, set a sensible frame-rate limit, and check temperatures during a sustained session. A smaller case can be quiet at idle but loud under continuous gaming load.
A game will not install or authenticate
Check free storage, account ownership, launcher requirements and anti-cheat or operating-system compatibility. SteamOS and Windows can expose different compatibility results, and a cloud service may support only selected titles. Do not assume that a game running on a desktop will run, authenticate or stream identically on a handheld.

- List the games you actually intend to play and mark which require local installation, Windows, a specific launcher or anti-cheat support.
- Choose the rendering path: local compact PC, docked handheld or cloud client.
- Verify the exact processor, GPU, memory, storage and power configuration, not just the family name.
- Confirm TV output, cable type, controller support and dock compatibility for the precise model.
- Measure the shelf or cabinet and account for ventilation, power brick space and cable bend radius.
- Check upgradeability, warranty terms, regional availability and return conditions.
- For cloud play, verify the catalogue, subscription, network requirements and data-cap implications.
- Keep a keyboard, mouse and spare cable available for first-time setup and recovery.
Bottom line: choose by where rendering happens
For a permanent living-room installation and demanding local games, buy a compact gaming PC whose exact graphics configuration is strong enough for your library; the HP Z2 Mini (G1a) and ASUS ROG NUC (2025) are examples identified by Windows Central, not independently benchmarked recommendations. For portability plus occasional TV play, a compatible handheld and dock are more versatile, provided the handheld supports external video and receives adequate power. For a quiet, inexpensive client, pair a simpler mini PC with a cloud service only after confirming game support and network quality. Treat dimensions, operating system, ports, cooling and upgradeability as first-class specifications, because the smallest box is not automatically the best Steam Machine alternative.
