Best Alternatives to the Skullcandy Hesh Evo for Comfortable Wireless Listening

Best overall: Sony WH-CH720N is the most complete comfort upgrade from the Skullcandy Hesh Evo, adding effective active noise cancellation (ANC), multipoint Bluetooth and a long quoted battery life without becoming heavy. Choose Soundcore Life Q30 if value, app-based EQ and ANC matter most; choose JBL Tune 770NC if maximum battery life and a foldable travel design are your priorities.

The Hesh Evo remains a comfortable over-ear baseline, but its lack of ANC, weak passive isolation and absent companion app limit it for commuting, offices and long flights. The right replacement depends on whether you value quiet, customization, battery endurance or portability more than the lowest possible price.

What the Hesh Evo does well—and where alternatives improve it

Skullcandy’s Hesh Evo uses a lightweight over-ear design that many listeners find comfortable for extended sessions. RTINGS measured about 44 hours of continuous battery life in testing, while Skullcandy’s current support information promises “up to 36+ hours of play time in the headphones.” A 10-minute Rapid Charge is rated for more than three hours of playback, and Bluetooth 5.0 and Tile finding are built in.

Its limitations are more important when you listen away from home. There is no active noise cancellation, and RTINGS found the passive noise reduction poor, so engine rumble, office voices and air-conditioning remain audible. Hesh Evo also does not pair with Skullcandy’s companion app, which means no app-based graphic equalizer, firmware controls or listening presets. If you mainly listen in a quiet room, those omissions may not matter. For travel or shared spaces, ANC and better isolation are meaningful upgrades.

Comfort is not a single measurable specification. The available reviews provide qualitative judgments rather than a shared clamp-force number or a standardized “hours until discomfort” test. Head size, glasses, hair, ear shape and personal sensitivity change the result. Treat the alternatives below as strong starting points, then use a retailer’s return window to confirm the fit yourself.

Quick comparison of the leading alternatives

Model Long-wear comfort and fit Noise control Battery claim Multipoint EQ and app Portability and case Price at publication
Skullcandy Hesh Evo Comfortable over-ear baseline; fit remains individual No ANC; poor passive reduction in RTINGS testing About 44 hours in RTINGS testing; Skullcandy says up to 36+ hours Not stated No companion-app support Case inclusion not stated Not stated
Sony WH-CH720N RTINGS rates it more comfortable than comparable Hesh ANC; generally reasonable comfort Effective ANC according to What Hi-Fi Up to 50 hours, according to What Hi-Fi Yes App and sound controls available; exact EQ bands not stated here Not foldable; no case reported by What Hi-Fi Not stated
Soundcore Life Q30 RTINGS rates it more comfortable and better built than Hesh Evo Effective ANC in RTINGS testing Not stated in the cited material Yes Companion app with graphic EQ and presets Case inclusion not stated Not stated
JBL Tune 770NC JBL describes the design as lightweight and comfortable Adaptive ANC, Ambient Aware and TalkThru Up to 70 hours with Bluetooth on and ANC off; JBL’s detailed note lists up to 44 hours of wireless listening in its stated condition Yes App-based EQ Foldable; case inclusion not stated Not stated

Battery figures are not directly comparable unless the listening mode is the same. In particular, JBL’s 70-hour headline excludes ANC, while the detailed specification gives a different wireless-listening figure for its listed condition. Sony’s 50-hour number is a quoted maximum, and Hesh Evo’s 44-hour result is a laboratory-style continuous test rather than a guarantee for every volume level or codec.

Sony WH-CH720N: the best all-round comfort upgrade

Sony’s WH-CH720N is the safest choice when you want the Hesh Evo’s easy, over-ear comfort but need genuine noise control and two-device convenience. RTINGS describes the Sony as more comfortable and better built than comparable Hesh ANC headphones, with a slightly more balanced sound and longer endurance. Multipoint lets you keep a phone and computer connected, so calls can interrupt music without manually repairing the headset.

Why it is comfortable for long sessions

The low-weight construction and moderate fit make the 720N a practical all-day model for work, study and flights. “Comfortable” is still personal: a narrow headband, glasses arms or shallow ear clearance can change the pressure you feel. Before committing, check whether your ears fit fully inside the cushions and whether the headband creates a hot spot after 30 to 60 minutes.

ANC, sound and controls

What Hi-Fi reports effective ANC and reasonable comfort. The review also describes a lively presentation with enthusiastic bass and writes that “we can’t think of any rival headphones at this price that could keep up with such a spirited delivery.” Listeners who prefer a neutral signature should plan to use Sony’s sound controls rather than assuming the factory tuning will suit every genre.

Battery, calls and travel trade-offs

What Hi-Fi lists up to 50 hours of battery life. The model is not foldable, and that review reports no included case, so it takes more room in a backpack than the JBL Tune 770NC. Those compromises matter less at a desk, where its comfort, ANC and multipoint are the stronger advantages. Call quality can vary with wind and room reflections; none of the supplied sources establishes a microphone ranking, so do not buy it solely for conference calls.

Soundcore Life Q30: the best value feature upgrade

Life Q30 is the strongest alternative when you want to spend as little as practical while adding the features Hesh Evo lacks. RTINGS finds it more comfortable and better built than Hesh Evo, with effective ANC, multipoint and NFC pairing. Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying guide gives Life Q30 an overall score of 67 in its noise-cancelling wireless over-ear table.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comfort and construction

The Q30’s over-ear fit and softer contact points make it a plausible long-listening replacement, but comfort remains dependent on your ear shape and clamp tolerance. A better build assessment does not mean indestructible hinges: fold and unfold the cups by the intended pivot, avoid twisting the headband and store the headset where the cushions are not crushed.

ANC modes and customization

Effective ANC is the main step up from Hesh Evo’s passive-only design. The companion app adds a graphic equalizer and presets, allowing you to reduce bass emphasis, brighten vocals or save a profile for podcasts. Multipoint is useful for a laptop-and-phone routine, while NFC can simplify initial pairing on compatible Android phones. App features can change with firmware, so install the manufacturer’s current app and update only when the headset has ample charge.

Who should choose it

Choose Q30 if comfort, ANC, two-device switching and EQ control all matter more than the thinnest possible travel profile. It is especially compelling for listeners who want to correct the factory sound rather than replace headphones whenever their taste changes. The cited material does not provide a standardized Q30 battery figure, microphone test result or case specification, so those should be verified on the seller’s current listing before purchase.

JBL Tune 770NC: the battery-and-travel pick

JBL Tune 770NC is the practical choice for commuters and frequent travelers who value a foldable frame and long operation between charges. JBL’s specification sheet describes it as “lightweight, comfortable and foldable,” and lists adaptive ANC, Ambient Aware, TalkThru, Bluetooth 5.3, multipoint and app-based EQ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understanding its battery numbers

JBL advertises up to 70 hours with Bluetooth on and ANC off. That footnote is essential: turning ANC on, increasing volume, using calls or changing codecs can reduce runtime. The same detailed specification lists up to 44 hours of wireless listening in its stated condition and says a five-minute charge adds three hours. Compare your normal mode, not only the largest headline number, with Sony’s quoted 50-hour maximum or Hesh Evo’s measured 44 hours.

Travel features and listening modes

The foldable hinges reduce bag space, while multipoint allows a phone and tablet or laptop to remain connected. Ambient Aware increases awareness of surroundings, and TalkThru lowers music and emphasizes speech when you need a quick conversation. Adaptive ANC is useful in changing environments, but the supplied specification does not establish that it blocks more noise than Sony’s or Soundcore’s implementation; choose based on the complete feature set rather than assuming the mode names guarantee identical performance.

Fit and limitations

The lightweight design should reduce fatigue, yet a compact foldable frame can fit differently from the roomier Hesh Evo. Check ear-cup depth and headband pressure during the return period. JBL’s specification does not state that a protective case is included, and the available material does not provide an independent microphone score or a standardized comfort-duration test.

How the three alternatives compare on the decisions that matter

For the quietest commute or flight

Start with Sony WH-CH720N or Soundcore Life Q30 because independent testing describes their ANC as effective. Sony is the more balanced overall recommendation when you also want a lighter, better-built-feeling design and multipoint. Q30 is the value-oriented choice when app EQ and a lower-cost feature set are more important. JBL offers adaptive ANC and useful awareness modes, but the supplied evidence does not rank its isolation against the other two.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

For the most comfortable long listening

RTINGS explicitly rates both Sony’s comparable design and Life Q30 more favorably than Hesh Evo-related alternatives, while What Hi-Fi calls Sony’s comfort reasonable. JBL’s own description calls the 770NC comfortable. Because no source supplies a common clamp or ear-cup measurement, there is no honest universal winner. Prioritize the model whose cushions fully surround your ears, then test it at your normal listening duration.

For sound adjustment

Life Q30 has the clearest documented customization: a companion app with graphic EQ and presets. JBL also provides app EQ. Sony provides sound controls, but the supplied material does not specify its exact equalizer implementation. Hesh Evo has no companion-app pairing, so all three alternatives offer more documented control than the incumbent.

For two-device use

Life Q30, WH-CH720N and Tune 770NC all support multipoint. This is the feature to prioritize if you alternate between a work computer and phone. Hesh Evo’s cited specifications do not state multipoint support, so do not assume it will switch smoothly between devices.

For battery-first buying

JBL has the largest headline claim at up to 70 hours with ANC off. Sony follows with up to 50 hours in What Hi-Fi’s listing. RTINGS measured about 44 hours for Hesh Evo. These figures describe different conditions, so a person who uses ANC all day should not expect JBL’s 70-hour maximum in that mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For packing space

JBL is the only model in this comparison explicitly described as foldable. Sony is reported as not foldable and without a case in What Hi-Fi’s review. Case inclusion for the other models is not established by the supplied specifications; confirm the exact retail bundle, since accessories can vary by region and seller.

What to check before replacing your Hesh Evo

  1. Measure your real listening environment. For quiet rooms, Hesh Evo’s comfort and long battery may be enough. For trains, planes or open offices, make ANC a requirement rather than a bonus.
  2. Check ear-cup clearance. Your ears should sit inside the pads without the driver pressing on the outer ear. Wear glasses or earrings during the test because they can create gaps and pressure.
  3. Confirm device switching. If you use a phone and computer, select a model with multipoint and test both connections before discarding the old headset.
  4. Set a battery expectation. Treat “up to” figures as best-case claims. ANC, high volume, calls and cold temperatures reduce runtime.
  5. Install and evaluate the app. For Q30 or JBL, test EQ, presets and firmware controls while you can still return the headphones. If you dislike app permissions or account requirements, choose a model whose default tuning works without them.
  6. Inspect the hinges and headband. Foldable designs save space but add moving parts. Open the JBL cups gently and do not force a hinge past its stop.
  7. Use the return policy as part of the purchase. Comfort cannot be settled from a specification sheet. Wear the headset for a normal work block, then check for hot spots, jaw pressure and ear heat.

Setup tips for better comfort and noise control

Get the fit right before judging ANC

Extend both sides evenly, center the headband and rotate each cup until the cushions seal without excessive clamp. A poor seal lets low-frequency noise leak in and can make ANC appear weak. Glasses temples and thick hair can create the same problem.

Use awareness modes deliberately

ANC is appropriate for steady background noise. Ambient Aware and TalkThru are better when you need traffic sounds or a short conversation. Do not use strong isolation while cycling, crossing roads or working around machinery; awareness of hazards takes priority over quieter music.

Protect battery health

Charge before a long trip rather than leaving the headset at zero for weeks. Rapid-charge claims are short top-ups, not a promise that every five minutes produces the same percentage. Keep the charging port dry and use a sound source at a comfortable level so you do not compensate for background noise by turning volume up.

Resolve multipoint problems

  1. Disconnect the headset from unused phones, tablets and computers.
  2. Pair the primary phone first, then enable multipoint in the manufacturer’s app if the option is provided.
  3. Pair the second device and play audio from only one source at a time.
  4. If switching fails, remove the headset from both Bluetooth menus, restart it and pair again in that order.

Improve calls in difficult rooms

Place the microphone side toward your mouth, move away from fans and avoid covering the ear-cup microphones with a scarf or hand. The supplied comparisons do not identify a definitive call-quality leader, so test a short recording or meeting during the return period if calls are important.

Which one should you buy?

  • Buy Sony WH-CH720N if you want the most balanced upgrade: comfortable long wear, effective ANC, multipoint, a better-built feel than the Hesh ANC comparison and up to 50 hours quoted by What Hi-Fi.
  • Buy Soundcore Life Q30 if you want effective ANC, multipoint, NFC and the strongest documented EQ flexibility at a value-oriented position. Its Consumer Reports 2026 overall score is 67.
  • Buy JBL Tune 770NC if foldability, awareness modes and maximum battery endurance matter most. Its up-to-70-hour claim applies with ANC off, while the detailed specification lists up to 44 hours in its stated wireless-listening condition.
  • Keep Hesh Evo if you mostly listen indoors, already like its fit and do not need ANC, app EQ or multipoint. Its roughly 44-hour RTINGS result and Rapid Charge remain useful strengths.

For most people replacing Hesh Evo, Sony WH-CH720N is the best first choice because it addresses the two biggest omissions—ANC and multipoint—without sacrificing comfort. Life Q30 is the better value-feature decision, and JBL Tune 770NC is the better travel-battery decision.
