For a direct replacement that keeps Siri voice control while adding real buttons, the One For All URC 1110 is the clearest fit. Choose Function101 if you want a simple, tactile Apple TV layout and can live without Siri. Choose a SofaBaton remote when Apple TV is one component in a larger television, soundbar, receiver, or smart-home system. BroadLink RM4 Pro is an app-first hub, while Sideclick adds infrared (IR) buttons to a compatible Siri Remote without replacing it.
Apple TV 4K does not require Apple’s touch-surface remote. Apple documents three other control routes: a supported TV or receiver remote over HDMI-CEC, a network-based home-control remote, or an IR universal remote learned through the Apple TV settings. That means you can solve a slippery touchpad, missing playback keys, or a multi-device setup without giving up Apple TV.

HDMI-CEC from a television or receiver
HDMI-CEC lets compatible equipment pass basic navigation and power commands over HDMI. If your television or AV receiver supports CEC and it is enabled, its remote may control Apple TV through the HDMI connection. Manufacturers use different names for CEC, so look in the television or receiver’s HDMI, external-device, or system-control menu. Apple TV must be connected to that CEC-capable display or receiver.
CEC is the lowest-effort option when you already like your TV remote. It is not a guarantee that every key will map identically: channel, input, app, or smart-TV buttons may remain specific to the television. If power or volume works but navigation does not, confirm CEC is enabled on both the Apple TV path and the display, then restart the connected devices.
Network-based home-control remotes
A network remote communicates over your home network rather than pointing an IR emitter at the television. Apple says these remotes are added through the Home app. This approach suits a dedicated home-control system or a household that wants activities and scenes managed from one networked interface. It is less attractive if you simply want a small handheld replacement with no hub or app.
Learned infrared commands
Many universal remotes can transmit IR commands. Apple TV can learn the directional, select, menu, playback, and other commands you assign. On Apple TV, open Settings > Remotes and Devices > Learn Remote, then follow the on-screen prompts while pointing the other remote at Apple TV. Learning maps the buttons you choose; it does not automatically create a complete universal layout.
IR requires a reasonably clear line of sight to the Apple TV’s receiver. If commands work only when you aim carefully, remove an obstruction or reposition the box. A hub can solve line-of-sight problems for compatible equipment, but a hub also adds setup and network dependencies.
How to choose the right type of alternative
Choose tactile buttons when touch navigation is the problem
The Siri Remote’s touch surface is compact and gesture-oriented. People who want a directional pad, distinct playback keys, or buttons they can find by feel should start with One For All URC 1110 or Function101. The key distinction is voice: One For All lists Siri voice control, while Function101’s button-first design does not replace Siri.
Choose a universal remote when Apple TV is only one device
If watching television involves Apple TV, a soundbar, an AV receiver, and the television itself, a single-device remote can leave you swapping controllers. SofaBaton’s X2 and X1S use a hub-centered approach for activities across compatible equipment. The U3 is a button-style universal remote with IR, Bluetooth, and RF learning. These are better matched to multi-device routines than to someone who only wants a different Apple TV keypad.

Choose an app-first hub when scenes matter more than a handset
BroadLink RM4 Pro is designed around app control of IR and Wi-Fi devices. It makes sense if you prefer phone-based scenes or want a hub to coordinate equipment. It is not the natural choice for a reader specifically asking for a physical Apple TV remote with buttons, and the cited comparison says it lacks Bluetooth.
Choose an add-on when you want Siri and extra keys
Sideclick clips to a compatible Siri Remote. You retain the original Siri microphone and touch surface, while the attachment supplies IR television and audio controls. This is the least disruptive path: there is no need to relearn Apple TV navigation, but you still carry the combined remote and must ensure the Sideclick version fits your Siri Remote.
One For All URC 1110: the strongest direct replacement
One For All lists the URC 1110 for three devices: TV, Apple TV, and audio. It also lists Siri voice control, motion-activated backlighting, and 100% compatibility with Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K. Those features address the most common reasons to replace the Siri Remote in one device: you get conventional keys, can see them in a dark room, and can still issue Siri commands.
Why it stands out
- Real buttons without giving up Siri: directional and dedicated keys provide tactile feedback while the voice function remains available.
- Three-device scope: the listed TV, Apple TV, and audio support can reduce remote swapping in a basic living-room system.
- Backlighting: motion activation helps locate controls during a movie, when a bright phone screen would be distracting.
- Broad Apple TV target: the manufacturer explicitly lists both Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K.
Who should buy it
Pick the URC 1110 when your priority is a named, model-specific Apple TV replacement rather than an open-ended automation project. It is especially suitable for a household where one person wants buttons but another still uses Siri. Confirm the current package and battery arrangement before ordering, because retail bundles can change.
Function101 Button Remote: the tactile Apple TV specialist
Independent comparisons position Function101 as the button-first choice. Its described layout includes a directional pad, dedicated playback keys, and volume control, making familiar operations easier to locate than on a touch surface.
The trade-off
Function101 does not replace Siri voice control. You can still keep an original Siri Remote nearby for voice searches, dictation, or touch gestures, but Function101 itself should be treated as a conventional navigation remote. That split can be a benefit for users who rarely use voice and prefer a simple handset; it is a drawback if Siri is central to your Apple TV routine.
Best use case
Choose it for an Apple TV-focused setup where predictable buttons matter more than controlling several brands of equipment. Verify the current model’s compatibility and included functions at purchase, since price and inventory are volatile.

SofaBaton X2, X1S, and U3: for a wider home theater
The SofaBaton family covers two different designs. X2 is grouped as a premium hub, X1S as a lower-cost hub, and U3 as a button-style universal remote. All are aimed at readers who want Apple TV alongside a television, soundbar, receiver, and other compatible devices.
X2: premium hub activities
X2 is the fit when you want activity-based control across a more involved system. Instead of thinking in terms of one remote per box, you configure activities such as watching Apple TV through a receiver and display. The hub model can centralize commands, but it requires more setup than a dedicated Apple TV remote and does not replace Apple TV Siri voice control.
X1S: a lower-cost hub route
X1S follows the same broad multi-device logic at a lower-cost position within the comparison. It is appropriate when you need hub-based control but do not want the premium model. Treat the lower price as a positioning distinction rather than a promise of a specific street price; current offers vary.
U3: physical universal buttons
U3 is the choice for readers who want a handheld button layout rather than a hub-centered experience. Its listed learning methods include IR, Bluetooth, and RF. It can consolidate compatible equipment, but it does not restore Siri voice control. If voice search is important, retain the Siri Remote or select the URC 1110 instead.
BroadLink RM4 Pro: an app-first alternative
BroadLink RM4 Pro controls IR and Wi-Fi devices through a hub and app. It is useful when your preferred interface is a phone, when you want scenes that combine several devices, or when the Apple TV is part of a broader smart-home routine.
This is a fundamentally different answer from a button remote. There is no dedicated handheld Apple TV key layout, and the cited comparison notes that RM4 Pro lacks Bluetooth. Choose it only if app-based control and hub scenes outweigh the convenience of tactile keys. For a guest room or family room where anyone should be able to press Play, a physical remote is usually easier.
Sideclick: add buttons without discarding Siri
Sideclick is an attachment, not a standalone Apple TV controller. It clips to compatible Siri Remotes and adds IR buttons for television and audio functions. Because the original remote stays in your hand, Siri and the touch surface remain available.

When the add-on approach wins
- You already like Apple TV navigation and Siri.
- You mainly miss physical TV power, input, or volume keys.
- You want to avoid pairing and relearning a completely different remote.
What to check first
Compatibility is physical: the Sideclick version must match your Siri Remote design. It also adds width and another set of batteries or power requirements, depending on the current revision. Check the exact attachment model and its supported IR functions before purchase.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Setup instructions by control method
Set up HDMI-CEC
- Connect Apple TV to the CEC-capable television or receiver, preferably through the device that should pass remote commands.
- Open the display or receiver’s settings and enable its HDMI-CEC or system-control feature. The label differs by manufacturer.
- Turn on the television, receiver, and Apple TV, then test directional navigation, Select, Menu/Back, playback, and volume.
- If only some commands work, test the television’s own remote and verify that the Apple TV is not connected through a device that blocks CEC.
Teach an IR universal remote
- Put fresh batteries in the universal remote and point it toward Apple TV.
- On Apple TV, open Settings > Remotes and Devices > Learn Remote.
- Follow the prompts to assign each requested Apple TV function to a button on the universal remote.
- Save the layout, then test navigation, selection, Menu/Back, playback, and any volume or power commands you plan to use.
- If learning fails, move closer, aim directly at Apple TV, and press each source button steadily rather than holding it down.
Add a network remote through Home
- Make sure Apple TV and the home-control system are on the same home network.
- Open the Home app and use its accessory or remote-setup flow to add the supported network-based controller.
- Assign Apple TV controls or activities in the home-control interface.
- Test operation with the phone or control panel in the locations where it will be used; network remotes depend on the local network being available.
Configure a universal multi-device remote
- List every device you want to control: Apple TV, television, soundbar, receiver, and any other compatible equipment.
- Decide whether activities should be hub-based (SofaBaton X2 or X1S), handheld and button-based (U3), or app-based (BroadLink RM4 Pro).
- Add each device using the remote’s current setup process, then create one activity for the way you actually watch.
- Test startup and shutdown in sequence. If a device misses a command, add a short delay or repeat the command where the remote’s software allows it.
- Keep the Siri Remote available during setup so you can recover if a universal profile omits a Siri-specific function.
Decision guide
| Your priority | Best fit | Reason | Accept the limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buttons plus Siri | One For All URC 1110 | Three-device control, backlighting, Siri voice control, and listed Apple TV HD/4K compatibility | Confirm current package and battery details |
| Simple Apple TV button layout | Function101 | Directional, playback, and volume keys designed around tactile use | No Siri voice replacement |
| One controller for a full theater | SofaBaton X2 or X1S | Hub-based activities for Apple TV, display, audio, and compatible devices | More setup; Siri is not replaced |
| Universal handheld with learning options | SofaBaton U3 | Button remote with IR, Bluetooth, and RF learning | No Siri voice replacement |
| Phone scenes and hub control | BroadLink RM4 Pro | IR and Wi-Fi device control from an app | App-first; cited comparison notes no Bluetooth |
| Keep the Siri Remote and add TV keys | Sideclick | Clips on and adds IR television/audio buttons | Must match the Siri Remote; remains a two-part handheld |
| Use the remote already in the room | HDMI-CEC or learned IR | No new dedicated Apple TV handset may be needed | CEC and IR command coverage varies by equipment |
Troubleshooting common failures
Apple TV responds only when you point the remote
That is normal for IR. Remove objects between the remote or hub and Apple TV, and make sure the IR emitter is aimed toward the box. A network or Bluetooth-capable method can reduce line-of-sight dependence, but each product’s supported protocols differ.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Navigation works but volume does not
Apple TV navigation and television or receiver volume may be separate command sets. Relearn volume through the universal remote’s device profile, configure the audio device as a second component, or enable HDMI-CEC on the display and receiver. Do not assume that a remote that controls Apple TV menus automatically controls every audio device.
Siri is missing after switching remotes
Function101 and SofaBaton U3 do not replace Apple TV Siri voice control, and the cited descriptions do not claim Siri replacement for SofaBaton X2, X1S, or BroadLink RM4 Pro. Keep the Siri Remote for voice functions, use the One For All URC 1110, or choose Sideclick so the original Siri hardware remains attached.
A hub activity starts only some devices
Check that every device is assigned to the correct activity and that the hub can reach IR equipment. Re-run the device-learning or profile setup for the component that misses commands, then test startup one device at a time. A short command delay may be needed when a television or receiver takes longer to wake.
The add-on does not fit
Sideclick attachments are model-specific. Compare the attachment’s compatibility statement with the exact Siri Remote generation in your hand; do not rely only on the Apple TV model name.
Buying checklist
- Identify whether you need an Apple TV-only remote, a three-device replacement, a full home-theater controller, an app hub, or an add-on.
- Decide whether Siri voice control is essential. Only the URC 1110 is explicitly listed here with Siri voice control; Sideclick retains it by keeping the original remote.
- Count the equipment you actually operate. TV and audio support may be enough for a simple room; a receiver and several sources favor a universal activity system.
- Choose the connection that matches your room: HDMI-CEC for the least new hardware, IR for broad universal compatibility, network control for home systems, or app/hub control for scenes.
- Check current compatibility, stock, price, battery or charging design, and the exact hardware revision before ordering.
- Keep the Siri Remote until the replacement has completed setup and passed navigation, playback, power, and volume tests.
Bottom line
For most readers who want a true Siri Remote replacement with tactile buttons, the One For All URC 1110 is the most complete match because it combines listed Apple TV HD and 4K compatibility, Siri voice control, backlighting, and TV/audio operation. Function101 is the cleaner choice when buttons matter more than voice. SofaBaton belongs in a multi-device theater, BroadLink RM4 Pro in an app-first smart-home setup, and Sideclick in a room where the existing Siri Remote is still the right Apple TV controller but lacks enough television and audio keys.
