For a close Samsung replacement, compare the Galaxy A36 5G—but its US launch price matched the A35’s, and one reviewer criticized its performance. The Google Pixel 9a is a stronger fit if responsiveness and camera processing matter enough to justify a higher local price. Consider the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro for its large display and 3x zoom camera, after checking carrier compatibility and its camera and battery trade-offs.

What is the Galaxy A35 comparison baseline?
Samsung announced the Galaxy A35 5G in the US in March 2024 with a starting price of $399.99. That was its launch price, not a current street-price estimate. The US configuration announced by Samsung included 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage; configurations can vary by region and carrier. Samsung’s launch announcement lists a 6.6-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display with refresh rates up to 120Hz, a 5,000mAh typical-capacity battery, and rear cameras consisting of a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilization, an 8MP ultra-wide, and a 5MP macro camera. Its front camera is 13MP.

That launch figure is a useful reference, but not a buying target: if a clearance A35 now costs much less than a newer phone, it may remain the better deal. The alternatives below make most sense when their current prices are competitive with the A35 in your market.

Which alternatives are worth considering?
Samsung Galaxy A36 5G: the closest Samsung replacement
The A36 is the most direct substitute if you want to stay with Samsung. Samsung’s US product page lists a 6.7-inch display, a stated peak brightness of 1,200 nits, 45W wired charging and six generations of OS upgrades plus six years of security updates. By comparison, Samsung lists the A35 at 6.6 inches, up to 1,000 nits peak brightness and 25W charging, with four OS generations and five years of security updates. Samsung also describes the A36 as IP67-rated with a durable glass back. These are manufacturer claims; verify the specifications and support terms for the exact regional model you are buying. The catch is performance at the price. Android Authority’s reviewer listed the A36 at a US MSRP of $399.99 and reported sluggish performance in their experience. The reviewer recommended that US buyers who can spend more consider the Pixel 9a, while noting that the A35 can still make sense if it is substantially cheaper. Those are the reviewer’s assessments, not a guarantee about every workload or a current price comparison. Android Authority’s Galaxy A36 review.

Choose the A36 if Samsung’s software and ecosystem, longer stated support, larger screen or faster charging matter more to you than getting the strongest performance for the money—and if its local price is attractive.
Google Pixel 9a: for responsiveness and camera processing
The Pixel 9a is a step-up candidate rather than a same-price substitute in the source-period US comparison: Android Authority’s 2025 budget-phone roundup listed it at $500 and the A36 at $400. The publication identified Google’s Tensor G4 chip and reported that the Pixel led the phones it compared in CPU and graphics benchmarks. These are dated source-period prices and source-specific benchmark results, not live pricing or a promise of performance in every app. Android Authority’s 2025 budget-phone comparison.

In its A36 review, Android Authority described the Pixel 9a as smoother, with better cameras and similarly strong software support, but noted a smaller display and slower charging than the A36. Its earlier A35 alternatives discussion also pointed to wireless charging and stronger software support on the Pixel, while giving Samsung the advantage of more flexible cameras. A36 review · A35 alternatives discussion.
Pick the Pixel if responsiveness, camera processing and long support matter more than matching the A35’s larger-screen feel, and the price difference in your market is acceptable.

Quick Recap
- Motorola Moto G Stylus (2025): consider it if you want an integrated stylus; the cited discussion cautions that its update commitment is weaker.
- Samsung Galaxy A26 5G: a lower-cost Samsung option with many similar features, but slightly smaller camera sensors according to the same discussion.
- Nothing Phone 3a Pro: the comparison cites a Snapdragon 7s Gen 3, a 6.7-inch display and a triple-camera setup, while warning US buyers about network support.
- iPhone 16e: a higher-priced option for someone who specifically wants iOS, rather than an Android phone at the A35’s price.
How should you compare the phones before buying?
- Compare current local prices. Match storage capacity and unlocked or carrier status. Include taxes and check whether an offer depends on a trade-in or other condition. The cited $399.99 A35 and A36 figures are US launch or MSRP references; the Pixel 9a and other comparisons use dated source-period prices, not live quotes.
- Match performance to your workload. The cited Android Authority comparison favored the Pixel 9a in CPU and graphics benchmarks and reported that the Nothing Phone 3a also outperformed the A36 in those tests. Benchmarks and reviewer impressions apply to the tested phones and conditions; they cannot guarantee how another app or workload will feel.
- Compare camera capabilities, not just megapixels. Consider whether you need an ultra-wide view, optical stabilization or true telephoto zoom, and look at sample photos for consistency. The A35 has a flexible rear camera set, the Pixel is praised in the cited reviews for its camera experience, and the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro adds a 3x camera with the review caveats described above.
- Check the support promise for your exact model. Samsung states six OS generations and six security years for the A36. Android Authority’s cited comparison lists seven years for the Pixel 9a and six years for the Nothing Phone 3a; that figure is for the 3a, not the 4a Pro, and should not be applied to another model without checking its own terms.
- Weigh screen, charging and durability together. The A36 has a slightly larger screen and faster wired charging than the A35. The cited A36 review describes the Pixel 9a as smaller with slower charging, while the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro guides list a larger screen and 50W charging alongside IP65.
- Verify network and after-sales fit. Check the exact handset’s carrier bands, SIM or eSIM configuration, local warranty and seller return policy, especially for Nothing models and imports.
