The 55-inch TCL QM6K is the strongest place to start if you want a Roku Select alternative with a more feature-rich picture and gaming setup; the 55-inch Hisense QD7 is a lower-cost option if you can live with a 60Hz screen and Fire TV. For bright rooms, gaming, or a particular streaming interface, the right choice depends on the exact model and its current price—not just the brand name.
Which 55-inch Roku Select alternative should you choose?
For a value-focused 55-inch 4K TV, the TCL QM6K is the most balanced candidate in the reviews considered here. TechRadar places it in its under-$500 category and describes a punchy, watchable picture in moderate daylight. It combines Mini-LED backlighting, Google TV, four HDMI 2.1 ports and support for several HDR formats. Its limitations include average built-in sound and brightness that is not exceptional. TechRadar’s TCL QM6K review is the source for those findings.

Choose the Hisense QD7 if a lower-cost everyday TV matters more than high-refresh gaming. Tom’s Guide lists the 55-inch model with a 60Hz refresh rate, Dolby Vision and four HDMI 2.0 inputs. Its review praises color accuracy, upscaling and audio, but reports a sluggish, ad-heavy Fire TV interface and weaker performance in well-lit rooms. See Tom’s Guide’s Hisense QD7 review.

Do not assume those 65-inch details apply to every size. Tom’s Guide’s Roku Select series coverage provides that distinction.

How the leading alternatives compare
| TV and size | Picture and HDR | Gaming and connections | Smart TV and review trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| TCL QM6K, 55-inch | Mini-LED; Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG listed by TechRadar. Review describes a punchy image in moderate daylight; brightness is not exceptional. | Four HDMI 2.1 ports. TechRadar’s page lists 144Hz in specifications but says in its prose that the panel supports up to 120Hz; verify the exact SKU before relying on a refresh-rate figure. | Google TV. Sound is described as average. TechRadar places it in its under-$500 category, not as a guaranteed current price. |
| Hisense QD7, 55-inch | 4K and Dolby Vision; review praises color accuracy and upscaling but says it performs less well in bright rooms. | 60Hz and four HDMI 2.0 inputs in Tom’s Guide’s listing. | Fire TV; review calls the interface sluggish and ad-heavy. Built-in audio is praised. |
| Vizio Mini LED Quantum 4K (VQM55C), 55-inch | LCD/IPS, 60Hz and Dolby Vision compatibility per RTINGS. Local dimming is included, but the review notes weaker black levels and more blooming around bright objects than its Hisense comparison. | Not stated in the cited RTINGS information. | Walmart-exclusive budget option according to RTINGS; check current stock and exact SKU before considering it. See RTINGS’ Vizio Mini LED Quantum 4K review. |
These are review-based comparisons, not results from a shared laboratory test. The Roku Select details above are intentionally limited to what the cited coverage establishes for the 55-inch series label and the separately reviewed 65-inch set.
Best value starting point: TCL QM6K
The QM6K is the best fit among these options if you want Mini-LED, a broad HDR format list and a stronger connection feature set than the QD7’s listed HDMI 2.0 ports. TechRadar reports a measured peak brightness of 559 nits for its reviewed QM6K, but its specification table and prose differ on refresh rate: one lists 144Hz, while the prose describes support up to 120Hz. Treat that as a reason to check the manufacturer’s specification for the precise 55-inch SKU rather than assuming the higher figure applies.

- Consider it for: a 55-inch set that balances movie and general viewing with gaming-oriented HDMI connections.
- Keep in mind: reviewers describe only moderate daylight performance and average sound, so it is not a clear choice for a very bright room or for someone prioritizing TV speakers.
- Check before buying: the exact model number, refresh-rate specification, live price and stock. TechRadar’s under-$500 category is not a promise that the set currently sells for less than $500.
Lower-cost everyday option: Hisense QD7
The QD7 makes more sense for streaming, broadcast TV and ordinary viewing than for high-refresh gaming. Its reviewed 60Hz panel and HDMI 2.0 inputs are a less ambitious gaming setup than the QM6K’s HDMI 2.1 ports. Dolby Vision support and the review’s positive notes on color, upscaling and audio are meaningful strengths if those matter more than interface responsiveness.
Recommended Free Tools
- Consider it for: a lower-priced 4K screen for everyday use, particularly if Dolby Vision and built-in audio are priorities.
- Keep in mind: Tom’s Guide reports a sluggish, ad-heavy Fire TV experience and weaker results in well-lit rooms.
- Check before buying: the exact 55-inch model and port/refresh specifications; similarly named models can differ.
When to consider the Vizio VQM55C
RTINGS lists the Vizio Mini LED Quantum 4K, model VQM55C, as a Walmart-exclusive budget option in the 55-inch category. Its cited review identifies an LCD/IPS panel, 60Hz refresh rate, Dolby Vision compatibility and local dimming. The review also flags weaker black levels and more blooming around bright objects than on its Hisense comparison, so it is not the strongest choice when dark-scene contrast is a priority. Because availability and SKU are especially important for this option, confirm that the exact model is in stock at the price you see before comparing it with the QM6K or QD7.

Choose by room, games, picture and software
If the TV will sit in a bright room
The QM6K is the more defensible candidate of the two leading picks: TechRadar found it watchable in moderate daylight, while Tom’s Guide says the QD7 is weaker in well-lit rooms. Neither review establishes that these sets will overcome strong direct sunlight or severe glare. Placement and window reflections still matter.
If you play games or watch fast-moving sports
Start with the QM6K’s four HDMI 2.1 ports, but verify the exact 55-inch refresh-rate specification because TechRadar’s own page gives conflicting 120Hz and 144Hz descriptions. The QD7 is listed at 60Hz with HDMI 2.0 ports, making it the less compelling of these two for high-refresh gaming. For either TV, check manufacturer specifications for features such as variable refresh rate and input lag if they are essential; the cited material does not establish those details consistently.

- Free Content: Stream for free. Access over 1 million free movies and TV episodes from popular ad-supported streaming apps like Fire TV Channels, Tubi, and Pluto TV. Subscriptions may be required. Feature and content availability may vary.
If movies and HDR matter most
The QM6K has the broader listed HDR-format support: Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG. The QD7 supports Dolby Vision. Format support tells you what a TV can accept, not how every scene will look; review findings and room conditions still shape the result. The Vizio review’s concerns about black levels and blooming make it a less attractive candidate for dark-room viewing.
If you care about the smart TV interface
The QM6K uses Google TV and the QD7 uses Fire TV. Tom’s Guide specifically criticizes the QD7 interface as sluggish and ad-heavy. Hisense’s US catalogue for 50-to-55-inch TVs includes sets with Fire TV, Google TV, Roku TV and VIDAA TV, along with different panel/backlight types and refresh-rate categories; that breadth can help narrow a search, but it does not rank their picture quality. See Hisense’s US 50-to-55-inch TV catalogue.
If you rely on built-in speakers
The review assessments point in different directions: TechRadar calls the QM6K’s sound average, while Tom’s Guide finds the QD7’s audio capable. These are reviewers’ impressions, not a direct side-by-side sound test.
Check the exact 55-inch model and current price
- Confirm the full model number and size. Look for the 55-inch SKU on the retailer listing and compare it with the manufacturer’s specifications. Similar series names do not guarantee the same ports or panel performance.
- Verify the refresh rate and ports. This is especially important for the QM6K, whose cited review gives conflicting refresh-rate descriptions, and for any set bought primarily for gaming.
- Compare the live price, not an old category label. TechRadar’s under-$500 placement and Tom’s Guide’s description of the QD7 as a cheap-TV pick are review positioning, not guaranteed prices today. October deal coverage also illustrates how quickly prices move; check the current offer and stock when you buy. See Tom’s Guide’s TV deal coverage.
- Match the set to your room and software preference. A brighter-room placement, Fire TV’s interface, gaming requirements or sound quality can change which option is the better value for you.
For more model discovery, Hisense’s catalogue shows the range of platforms and refresh-rate categories available in its US 50-to-55-inch lineup, but it is not an independent performance comparison.
