If the PS6 launches beyond your budget, the PS5 Digital Edition is the safest substitute for PlayStation players, Xbox Series S is the lowest-cost current Xbox route, and Nintendo Switch 2 is the better choice when portability and Nintendo games matter most. Sony has not confirmed a PS6 price, release date or specifications, so each choice solves a different problem rather than simply being a cheaper PS6.
What is actually known about the PS6 price?
There is no confirmed PS6 price or launch date in the available public evidence. In a financial-results call reported by GameSpot on May 8, 2026, Sony president and CEO Hiroki Totoki said: “We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices.” That statement rules out treating any rumored figure as an official retail price.

Totoki also said memory prices were expected to remain very high in Sony’s financial year 2027 because of a supply shortage. Memory costs do not translate directly into a final console price, but they make a premium next-generation launch price harder to predict. The sensible comparison is therefore between consoles you can buy now and a future PS6 purchase whose cost and specifications remain unsettled.
Current alternatives at a glance
| Console | U.S. price evidence | Best reason to choose it | What the cited material does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 Digital Edition | $599.99 MSRP, effective April 2, 2026 | Keep your PlayStation account, library, accessories and first-party ecosystem | Comparative storage capacity or performance headroom versus PS6 |
| PlayStation 5 with disc drive | $649.99 U.S. MSRP, effective April 2, 2026 | PlayStation continuity plus physical-game support | A confirmed PS6 launch window or trade-in value |
| PlayStation 5 Pro | $899.99 U.S. MSRP, effective April 2, 2026 | Higher-tier current-generation PlayStation hardware | Whether its performance advantage justifies buying instead of waiting for PS6 |
| Xbox Series S | Microsoft identifies it as the lowest-cost Xbox route; a numeric MSRP is not stated in the cited announcement | Minimize the initial console purchase and use Xbox’s lower-cost or refurbished channels | A full specification comparison with PS5 or PS6 |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | $500 reported base price after a second increase, according to GamesRadar+ | Portability and Nintendo software | Whether it matches PlayStation-class graphics or receives the same releases |
The prices above are U.S. figures and should be checked against the retailer and region where you live. A reported price is not the same as a manufacturer-confirmed MSRP, which is why the Switch 2 figure is labeled separately.

Choose the PS5 Digital Edition for the least disruptive PlayStation upgrade
Why it is the closest PS6 substitute
The PS5 Digital Edition is the direct alternative for someone who wants to keep using PlayStation rather than change platforms. Sony’s ecosystem continuity means your existing PlayStation account, digital library, compatible accessories and first-party relationships remain central to the purchase. You avoid paying an unknown premium for a new generation while still buying a current Sony console.
This matters if your decision is driven by access rather than novelty. A PS6 may eventually offer newer hardware, but Sony has not published specifications that let buyers calculate how much faster, quieter, or more capable it will be. The PS5 is the only option in this comparison whose continuity with your existing PlayStation setup is explicitly established.
Near-term reason to buy: Grand Theft Auto VI
Sony and Rockstar say Grand Theft Auto VI will play best on PS5 when it launches on November 19, 2026. If that game is a major reason you are considering a new console, buying a PS5 gives you a documented platform target instead of waiting for an unpriced machine. The statement does not establish a PS6 version, launch-day enhancement or upgrade policy, so do not pay for an imagined feature.
Digital-only trade-offs
The Digital Edition is the lower-priced PS5 configuration in Sony’s current U.S. lineup, but it requires digital purchases. Choose it when your existing games are digital or you are comfortable buying downloads. If you rely on boxed games, second-hand discs or a physical collection, the disc PS5 is the relevant comparison even though its MSRP is higher. The cited pricing does not establish the long-term cost difference between digital and physical libraries, so calculate that from the games you actually buy.
When the PS5 is not the right answer
- Do not buy it solely because you expect a PS6 announcement on a particular date; Sony has not supplied one.
- Do not assume every future PS6 game will run on PS5. Sony has confirmed neither a cross-generation software policy nor PS6 specifications.
- Do not select the Digital Edition if disc ownership, lending or used-game purchases are essential to you.
Choose Xbox Series S when the first purchase price matters most
What Microsoft actually promises
Xbox Wire describes Xbox Series S as “the lowest-cost way for console players to enjoy the biggest hits this year.” That is a positioning claim from Microsoft, not a complete independent performance ranking. The cited announcement does not provide a side-by-side specification table against PS5, so it cannot support a claim that Series S is faster or slower in every game.
Xbox also points buyers toward previously played consoles and certified-refurbished units. Certified-refurbished consoles can be available for up to $100 off MSRP, subject to stock and the seller’s current terms. Because the announcement does not state a single Series S retail price, compare the actual listing you can buy, its warranty, included controller and return policy rather than relying on an old price article.

The ecosystem switch is the real cost
Moving from PlayStation to Xbox means leaving the PlayStation account and library continuity that makes the PS5 Digital Edition attractive. Your decision should start with the games and services you already own, not with a headline price alone. A lower console cost can be poor value if you must repurchase priority games or replace accessories that are tied to your current platform.

Storage and performance headroom are not fully documented here
Microsoft reported that Xbox console storage and memory costs had risen by more than 2.5 times. That explains why console pricing and configurations can change, but it does not establish how much usable storage Series S includes, how it compares with PS5, or what PS6 will deliver. Treat “lowest-cost” as an affordability label, not as proof of equal performance or equal long-term capacity.
Best buyer profile
- You want the lowest-cost current Xbox entry point rather than PlayStation continuity.
- You are willing to check previously played and certified-refurbished inventory for a lower outlay.
- Your must-play games are available in the Xbox catalog and you do not need a disc-based PlayStation library.
Choose Nintendo Switch 2 for portability and Nintendo exclusives
Why its price comparison is easy to misunderstand
GamesRadar+ reported a $500 base price for Switch 2 after a second price increase. That makes Switch 2 a distinct value proposition, not an automatic bargain relative to the PS5 Digital Edition. The price is lower than some premium consoles, but it is close enough to current PlayStation pricing that the reason to buy must be the device’s form factor and software catalog.
Portability is the differentiator
Switch 2 is the portability-first option in this group. Choose it when playing away from a television, using Nintendo’s first-party games, or having one system that serves multiple play locations matters more than matching PlayStation graphics. The available evidence does not establish that Switch 2 receives the same releases as PS5, nor that it offers equivalent performance headroom.
What it cannot replace
Switch 2 is not a direct substitute for a PlayStation account, digital library or the PS5 version of Grand Theft Auto VI. If those are your priorities, portability alone does not solve the problem. Conversely, if Nintendo software is the reason you are shopping, comparing frame rates or unannounced PS6 specifications misses the point of the purchase.
How the alternatives compare by the decision that matters to you
| Your priority | Most defensible choice | Reason | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep PlayStation purchases and accessories | PS5 Digital Edition | It preserves the PlayStation account, library, accessories and first-party ecosystem. | It is current-generation hardware, while PS6 specifications are unknown. |
| Get the lowest-cost console route | Xbox Series S | Xbox explicitly calls it the lowest-cost way to access its current hits and offers previously played and certified-refurbished paths. | The cited announcement gives no numeric MSRP or full performance comparison. |
| Play Nintendo games anywhere | Switch 2 | Its portability and Nintendo catalog are the primary reasons to choose it. | The reported base price is not automatically below PS5 Digital, and cross-platform game support is not established. |
| Play Grand Theft Auto VI on a confirmed platform | PS5 family | Sony and Rockstar position PS5 as the best-playing platform for the November 19, 2026 launch. | That statement does not confirm a PS6 edition or upgrade policy. |
| Buy the most premium current PlayStation model | PS5 Pro | It is Sony’s higher-priced current-generation option. | Its U.S. MSRP is far above PS5 Digital, and no evidence here proves it is a better value than waiting. |
Is buying a PS5 before PS6 sensible?
Buy now when a specific 2026 game or existing library matters
A PS5 purchase is rational when you have an immediate use for it: your digital library, your current accessories, or the announced PS5 release of Grand Theft Auto VI. You are buying access to a known platform, not betting on a future price. Set a personal ceiling for the console and games, then buy only if the current bundle fits it.

Wait when PS6-specific features are non-negotiable
Waiting is the only way to preserve the option of buying PS6 at launch. It is appropriate if you care primarily about whatever new architecture, features or software support Sony eventually announces and can tolerate having no new console in the meantime. The trade-off is immediate access: Sony has not supplied a date, price or specification that lets you know how long the wait will be.
Do not use rumors as a budgeting method
Until Sony publishes an official price, a rumored PS6 number cannot tell you whether saving for it is realistic. Keep the amount you would spend flexible and compare the confirmed PS5 prices with the actual Xbox or Switch listing available in your region. Revisit the decision when Sony makes a formal announcement.
A practical buying process
- Write down the platform commitments you already have. List your PlayStation digital games, physical discs, controllers and other accessories. If replacing them would be expensive or inconvenient, give ecosystem continuity a high priority.
- Identify the next game you will actually play. If that game is Grand Theft Auto VI, the PS5 platform statement is directly relevant. If it is a Nintendo-exclusive title, Switch 2 becomes more compelling. If it is an Xbox release, compare the Series S listing and service requirements.
- Set an all-in budget. Include the console, a second controller if needed, games, storage expansion if your chosen model requires it, tax and delivery. None of the cited figures include those extras.
- Check the seller’s condition and warranty. For Xbox, compare new, previously played and certified-refurbished offers. Confirm the return window and what “certified” covers before treating a discount as savings.
- Verify regional availability. The quoted PS5 figures are U.S. MSRPs, and the Switch 2 figure is a reported U.S. market price. Exchange rates, taxes, bundles and stock can change the amount you pay elsewhere.
- Choose waiting only for a defined reason. Waiting makes sense if PS6 features are essential; it is not a guarantee of a lower price or a near-term launch.
Common mistakes that make a “cheap PS6 alternative” expensive
Comparing only the console sticker price
A console is part of a platform. Rebuying games, replacing controllers or abandoning a library can erase the initial saving. Include those switching costs before choosing Xbox or Nintendo over PlayStation.

The PS5 Pro costs more than the standard PS5 models, but the evidence here does not establish its lifespan relative to PS6 or guarantee compatibility with future software. Pay for a current feature you will use, not for an assumed bridge to the next generation.
Treating “lowest cost” as “same performance”
Microsoft’s Series S description supports an affordability recommendation. It does not provide the comparative specifications needed to rank image quality, storage or frame rates against PS5 or PS6. Keep that distinction clear when reading retailer claims.
Assuming Switch 2 is a cheaper PlayStation
The reported $500 Switch 2 price does not make it a PlayStation replacement. Its value comes from portability and Nintendo software. Buy it for those benefits, not because the price alone promises equivalent graphics or releases.
Bottom-line decision
For a PlayStation household, choose the PS5 Digital Edition and keep your existing ecosystem while PS6 pricing remains unknown. For the lowest-cost current Xbox path, investigate Series S listings, including certified-refurbished and previously played units, and accept the platform switch. For portable play and Nintendo exclusives, Switch 2 is the purposeful alternative even though its reported base price is not dramatically below PS5 Digital. Wait for PS6 only if its eventual features matter more to you than having a console now.
