What makes the No. 773 difficult to replace?
The Lionel No. 773 is a postwar 4-6-4 Hudson introduced in 1950. Its appeal comes from the combination of a recognizable Hudson wheel arrangement, Lionel’s scale-Hudson lineage and the period operating experience associated with a conventional-control locomotive. An alternative therefore has to be judged on more than brand or paint scheme.

The range is useful because you can match a railroad represented elsewhere on your layout rather than settling for a generic paint scheme. The essential point is to treat each road-name release as its own SKU. Do not assume that a feature or curve rating from one Hudson applies to every other version.

- Confirm which controller, receiver and power arrangement the release expects, especially if you mix command-equipped and conventional locomotives.
- Check whether the listing describes smoke fluid, lighting and sound as included features or as functions that require particular operating settings.
This is the sensible default for a reader who wants a Hudson that can be bought new and operated with modern features. It is not automatically the best choice for a tightly curved layout, because the minimum radius is release-specific.
2. Lionel New York Central J3a Hudson 6-28072: the scale-detail choice
The Lionel Collectors archive documents the New York Central J3a Hudson 6-28072 as an O-gauge scale Hudson. It has a die-cast boiler, tender, trucks and pilots, command control and sound, an O-54 minimum radius, and an approximate 24-inch overall length. Those specifications make it the clearest match for a modeler who values scale presence more than compact operation.

Why the J3a is a strong 773 alternative
- It preserves the 4-6-4 identity: The locomotive remains recognizably a Hudson rather than merely another passenger steam engine.
- Its construction supports visual weight: Die-cast major components give the model the substantial appearance expected of a scale locomotive.
- It has command and sound: You get modern operating functions without giving up the scale profile.
- The curve requirement is explicit: O-54 is a usable planning number, not a guess.
Plan around O-54 and a 24-inch locomotive
In O-gauge track naming, O-54 denotes a nominal 54-inch diameter curve. The J3a’s documented O-54 minimum radius means that an O-36 or O-48 loop is not an acceptable substitute merely because the track is labeled O gauge. Treat the requirement as a layout-design constraint.
- Draw the full curve, including the locomotive’s overhang at the center and ends.
- Check parallel-track spacing where the Hudson passes a car on the adjacent track.
- Measure platform edges, signal masts, bridge portals and tunnel mouths against the locomotive and tender swing.
- Leave room for coupler movement; a long engine can appear to clear a curve while its tender or coupler pocket does not.
At approximately 24 inches long, the J3a also needs longer sidings and wider scenic clearances than a compact semi-scale locomotive. If your layout has only short terminal tracks, the model may fit the curves but still overhang the usable platform or foul a turnout ladder.
Buying a J3a today
The documented 6-28072 information is archival, so treat this Hudson as a historical or secondary-market purchase rather than assuming current factory stock. Ask for photographs of the boiler, pilots, wheels, tender trucks and couplers. Request a demonstration of command operation, sound and smoke if the seller claims those functions work. Confirm that the locomotive includes the parts needed for your control system and that repairs are practical before paying a premium for an unusually clean example.

3. Lionel No. 785 Hudson: the vintage Lionel-family successor
Lionel’s service document describes the No. 785 as “a continuation of the famous Lionel Scale Hudson Series.” It operates on O-gauge layouts, and its motor, gear train and reversing-unit assemblies are similar to those used in the 1950 773. That makes the 785 the most relevant vintage choice when the goal is a period Lionel feel with a mechanically related design.

- Operators who enjoy conventional transformer control and the maintenance associated with older mechanisms.
- Owners of a 773 who want a related model for a second passenger consist or a display-and-operation collection.
Inspection checklist for a used 785
- Motor: Listen for grinding, hesitation or excessive sparking. A seller’s short video under power is more useful than a static photograph.
- Gear train: Check for binding, cracked gears and a locomotive that surges at low speed.
- Reversing unit: Confirm that the locomotive cycles reliably through forward, neutral and reverse rather than requiring repeated power interruptions.
- Wiring: Look for brittle insulation, improvised repairs and loose pickup connections.
- Smoke unit: Determine whether it heats, whether the smoke switch functions and whether the unit has been run dry or overfilled.
- Couplers and trucks: Inspect mounting screws, pins and alignment before coupling a long passenger consist.
- Wheels and pickup rollers: Dirty or worn contact surfaces can imitate a failing motor or transformer.
The 785’s similarity to the 773 mechanism does not make every used example plug-and-play. Age, storage conditions and previous repairs determine whether the locomotive needs cleaning, lubrication, replacement wiring or a more extensive rebuild. The service document also does not establish a universal minimum-radius figure for every 785, so measure the individual engine or consult its specific instructions before designing around it.
4. Lionel 4-6-2 Pacific: choose the passenger role, not the Hudson outline
Lionel describes the 4-6-2 Pacific as a medium-build passenger locomotive with substantial pulling power. Pacifics were widely used in North America before dieselization, so the type belongs naturally in a passenger-era consist even though it has a two-wheel trailing truck instead of the Hudson’s four-wheel trailing truck.
When a Pacific is the better decision
- Your layout has tighter curves than a scale Hudson can comfortably negotiate.
- You care more about a convincing passenger train than about reproducing the exact 4-6-4 silhouette.
- You want a locomotive whose visual proportions suit shorter cars, compact stations or an earlier steam-era scene.
- You prefer to select a release by its specific control system, sound package and minimum-radius rating.
Do not treat “Pacific” as a guaranteed small-engine solution. Models differ in length, tender design and curve requirements. Compare the published minimum radius, locomotive-and-tender length, overhang and coupler clearance with your track plan before purchase.
5. MTH RailKing 4-6-0: an adjacent O-gauge steam concept
A Ten-Wheeler is not a visual Hudson replacement. The 4-6-0 arrangement has no trailing truck, giving the locomotive a different frame profile and a different historical impression. It becomes relevant when your real goal is an O-gauge steam locomotive for a different consist concept.

Reasons to move from a Hudson concept to a Ten-Wheeler
- You want a lighter, earlier-looking train rather than a high-speed passenger flagship.
- You are building an Overton-style consist or another short passenger train concept.
- You prefer to spend layout space on scenery, sidings or stations instead of broad Hudson curves.
- You are comfortable comparing a different control ecosystem and accessory requirements.
Choose the Ten-Wheeler because its appearance and train concept suit the layout, not because it is assumed to be a drop-in mechanical equivalent of a 773.
How to match a replacement to your layout
Step 1: Measure the tightest operating curve
Find the smallest radius used by the main line, yard leads and hidden trackage. Include curves that a locomotive reaches only when reversing or entering staging. If the layout includes O-54, do not assume every larger-looking scenic curve has the same geometry; verify the track section or manufacturer designation.
Step 2: Separate locomotive length from curve rating
A model can meet a published minimum radius and still create clearance problems. Record the approximate engine-and-tender length, then mark the center and end overhang on the tightest curve. The J3a’s approximately 24-inch length is the clearest example of why this matters.
Step 3: Decide whether “Hudson” is mandatory
- If the wheel arrangement and silhouette are non-negotiable, limit the search to a LionChief Plus Hudson, J3a or 785.
- If the passenger-service role is more important, add a 4-6-2 Pacific.
- If you want a different era or a compact consist concept, consider the RailKing 4-6-0.
Step 4: Choose the operating system
Modern LionChief Plus and command-equipped models are designed around electronic control, sound and accessory functions. A vintage 785 is a different ownership experience: its motor, gears, reversing unit, smoke system and wiring may need hands-on service. Current prices, used-market condition and stock status change frequently, so a fixed “best value” claim would be unreliable. Compare the complete purchase: locomotive, controller compatibility, smoke fluid, replacement couplers, track changes and likely service. A lower-priced vintage engine can cost more than a new model if it needs a motor, gear work, rewiring and smoke-unit repair.

Common buying mistakes and fixes
Assuming every Hudson fits the same curve
Problem: A buyer uses the curve rating from one Hudson listing for another road name or production run.
Fix: Record the exact SKU and use that model’s published minimum radius. If no reliable figure is available, test the locomotive on the layout before committing to permanent track changes.
Confusing O gauge with enough clearance for a scale engine
Problem: The track is O gauge, but the locomotive’s body, tender and overhang are too large for the scenery or adjacent track.
Fix: Plan for the J3a’s O-54 requirement and approximately 24-inch length as a reference point. Measure clearances at curves, platforms, bridges and turnouts.
Buying a vintage 785 from photographs alone
Problem: Cosmetics look good while the motor, gear train, reversing unit, smoke unit or wiring is untested.
Fix: Request a powered demonstration, inspect the underside and ask which parts have been replaced. Treat “untested” as a repair risk, not as evidence that the locomotive works.

Choosing a Pacific or Ten-Wheeler while expecting Hudson proportions
Problem: The locomotive pulls the train but does not deliver the visual balance or historical impression expected from a 4-6-4.
Fix: Decide first whether the Hudson outline is essential. If it is, stay with a Hudson alternative; if the passenger or steam-era role is the real objective, select the different wheel arrangement deliberately.
Ignoring mixed-fleet control requirements

Choose the Lionel No. 785 when a vintage Lionel experience and a mechanism related to the 1950 773 matter more than new-product convenience.
A 4-6-2 Pacific is the practical alternative when passenger service matters but an exact Hudson outline does not. The MTH RailKing 4-6-0 belongs in a different-steam-era plan rather than a direct replacement shortlist. In every case, let the exact model’s minimum radius, length, control system and condition decide the purchase.
