What the Yoga 9 Gen 11 sets as the standard
The Yoga 9 2-in-1 14 Gen 11 is more than a laptop with a touch panel. Lenovo lists a 14-inch 2.8K OLED display at 2880×1800 pixels, a maximum 120Hz refresh rate and unusually broad color coverage: 100% of both DCI-P3 and sRGB, plus 99% Adobe RGB. Those figures make the screen suitable for handwriting, color-sensitive illustration and video viewing, provided your software is color-managed and the room lighting does not produce distracting reflections.
The 360-degree sound-bar hinge lets the computer work in four positions. Laptop mode is for typing and mixed work, tent mode is useful for presenting or following a reference, stand mode raises the screen for viewing, and tablet mode puts the panel flat enough for pen input. A Yoga Pen Gen 2 with case is listed as part of the package, so the pen experience is available without treating the stylus as a separate line item in the same way it often is on detachable tablets.

Lenovo describes that pen as intended for natural, precise note-taking and drawing. In practice, the important baseline is not the marketing phrase but the complete workflow: a high-resolution OLED canvas, a hinge that keeps the keyboard attached, and an active pen available in the box. An alternative needs to beat or deliberately trade away one of those advantages.
1. HP Spectre x360 14: the closest direct substitute
Why it matches the Yoga concept
The Spectre x360 14 preserves the same basic idea: a premium notebook whose display folds through 360 degrees instead of detaching. You can write in tablet mode, prop it in tent or stand mode, then return to a conventional keyboard without pairing a separate base. For someone who alternates between class notes, email, browser research and illustration, that continuity is usually more convenient than carrying a tablet and keyboard as separate pieces.
HP specifies a 14-inch 2.8K OLED multitouch display with a variable 48–120Hz refresh range. The 120Hz ceiling can make scrolling and pen movement appear smoother than a fixed 60Hz panel, while the variable range allows the system to reduce refresh when high speed is unnecessary. HP also lists 100% DCI-P3 coverage, 400 nits for SDR and 500 nits for HDR. The brightness figures are specified by mode, so do not interpret the HDR number as the everyday brightness of every application.
Pen support and the configuration trap
HP’s specification identifies an “HP USB-C Rechargeable MPP 2.0 Tilt Nightfall Black Pen” as optional. MPP 2.0 is Microsoft’s active-pen protocol; tilt support can help shading tools respond more naturally when the application recognizes it. Optional does not mean unavailable, but it does mean two Spectre listings can have different out-of-box experiences. Before ordering, verify three separate points:
- The exact product number and regional configuration.
- Whether the pen is physically included or merely supported.
- Whether the charger, spare nibs or any pen holder are included.
If the pen is absent, add its cost and delivery time to the comparison. A Spectre that looks cheaper than a Yoga bundle may no longer be cheaper once a compatible active pen is purchased.

Who should choose the Spectre
Choose the Spectre x360 14 when you want a conventional laptop first, but still need a serious handwriting and drawing mode. It is particularly well suited to people who work on their lap, type long documents between sketches, or dislike the flex and accessory management that can come with a detachable tablet. Its OLED gamut and 120Hz capability also make it a strong choice for illustration and media, although the final result depends on the CPU, memory and graphics configuration you select.
What to verify before buying
HP sells the Spectre family in multiple configurations and regions. The published display and pen information does not establish one universal processor, memory capacity, storage size, battery rating or weight for every unit carrying the Spectre x360 14 name. Check those fields on the exact listing, and confirm that the operating-system edition and warranty match your location. Do not assume that a retailer’s photograph showing a pen proves that the pen is in the box.

Why its posture is different
The Surface Pro 11 starts as a tablet. Its detachable design puts the display and pen surface in your hands without a permanently attached keyboard behind it. That arrangement is attractive for artists who draw with the screen low on a desk, on a stand, or held in portrait orientation for reading and annotation. Tom’s Guide’s current 2-in-1 guide places Surface Pro 11 among the strongest options for note-taking and drawing, and Creative Bloq’s current drawing roundup directs digital-art readers toward it first.
The practical distinction is posture, not merely the number of hinges. A 360-degree convertible keeps its keyboard attached and folds it behind the screen; a Surface lets you remove the keyboard altogether. The latter reduces the chance of pressing keys with your palm or feeling the keyboard under the tablet, but it also means you must keep track of a separate cover if you need a laptop-like typing setup.
Slim Pen and keyboard budgeting
Surface Pro 11 supports the Slim Pen. Depending on the bundle and seller, the keyboard and pen can be separate purchases. Compare a complete working kit rather than the tablet price alone: tablet, keyboard cover, Slim Pen, charger, replacement tips and warranty. If you already own compatible accessories, the detachable design can be more economical; if you need everything, the apparent price advantage can disappear.
Rank #3
Who should choose Surface Pro 11
Select it when drawing posture, low carry weight and tablet handling are more important than an integrated keyboard. It is the better match for sketching during commutes, annotating PDFs while standing, or using a dedicated studio stand. It is less convenient if your day consists of repeated switches between handwriting and long typing sessions and you do not want to attach and detach a keyboard.
What the available comparisons do—and do not—establish
The cited buying guides recommend Surface Pro 11 for its ultraportable, pen-ready design, but they do not provide one universal set of display brightness, color-gamut, refresh-rate, CPU, memory, storage or battery figures that applies to every configuration. Treat the exact model number as essential. A Surface Pro 11 listing with a different panel or memory tier can behave differently from the unit described in an editorial roundup.
Pen experience: the details that affect real notes and drawings
Included versus supported
“Supports a pen” and “includes a pen” answer different buying questions. The Yoga 9 Gen 11 specification lists a Yoga Pen Gen 2 with case. HP lists its MPP 2.0 tilt pen as optional. Surface Pro 11 supports Slim Pen, while the keyboard and pen may be sold separately. Record the accessory status beside the computer price before deciding.
Tilt, pressure and palm rejection
Tilt matters most for brushes that change width or opacity with the angle of the stylus. Pressure matters for line weight and shading. Palm rejection is handled jointly by the operating system, digitizer and application; a pen that works in a note app may behave differently in an older drawing program. Test the applications you actually use rather than relying on a generic “active pen” label.
Tips and replacements
Nibs wear faster with a matte screen protector, heavy pressure or abrasive debris. Check whether replacement tips are sold in your region for the Yoga Pen Gen 2, HP’s MPP pen and Slim Pen. Keep at least one spare if the computer is used for classes or client work. A missing replacement-tip supply can turn a technically compatible pen into an impractical long-term tool.

Display choice for handwriting and illustration
OLED and color coverage
The Yoga and Spectre specifications both identify OLED panels. OLED can provide deep blacks and strong contrast, while the Yoga’s listed 100% DCI-P3, 100% sRGB and 99% Adobe RGB coverage, and the Spectre’s 100% DCI-P3 coverage, provide a wide working gamut. Wide gamut is useful only when your application and color-management workflow are configured correctly; otherwise saturated colors may look different from an sRGB reference.
Refresh rate
The Yoga reaches 120Hz, and the Spectre specifies a variable 48–120Hz range. Higher refresh can make cursor travel and canvas panning look smoother, but it can also affect battery use. If you draw for hours away from an outlet, try a lower refresh setting when the system permits it. Surface Pro 11’s exact refresh specification is configuration-dependent in the material available for this comparison, so verify the panel on the unit you plan to buy.
Brightness and reflections
HP publishes 400-nit SDR and 500-nit HDR figures for the Spectre. HDR brightness should be considered in the context of HDR content and the display’s tone-mapping behavior, not as a promise that every white screen reaches 500 nits. Lenovo’s cited Yoga specifications emphasize resolution, refresh and gamut rather than a single brightness figure. For classrooms or studios with overhead lights, compare the actual screen finish and your ability to position the display; reflections can matter more than a small specification difference.
360-degree laptop or detachable tablet?
| Use case | 360-degree design | Detachable tablet |
|---|---|---|
| Long typing sessions | Keyboard is always attached and immediately available | Requires attaching the keyboard cover |
| Drawing posture | Use tablet, stand or tent mode; keyboard remains behind the display | Remove the keyboard for an unobstructed tablet surface |
| Lap use | Generally straightforward because the base stays rigid | Depends on the kickstand and the surface beneath it |
| Accessory management | Fewer separate pieces if the pen is bundled | Keyboard and pen may each be separate items |
| Desk presentation | Tent and stand modes are built into the hinge | Kickstand angle and keyboard placement determine stability |
Neither design is universally better. The deciding question is whether your default activity is laptop work with occasional pen input or tablet drawing with occasional typing.

Performance, heat and application fit
Neither the Yoga, Spectre nor Surface Pro 11 should be chosen from the display and pen specifications alone. Large canvases, many-layer documents, 3D brushes and video timelines can stress the processor, graphics engine and memory. The supplied model descriptions do not establish one common CPU, GPU, memory or storage configuration, so choose those components from your workload rather than assuming every model name has the same performance.

For notes and PDFs
Almost any current configuration can be adequate for handwriting, document markup and web research, but storage still matters if you keep local scans, reference images or lecture recordings. Confirm that the selected capacity leaves room for your applications and working files.
For layered illustration
Prioritize the highest memory tier available in the exact configuration, then check whether the processor and integrated or discrete graphics match the requirements of your drawing application. Sustained brush use can expose fan noise and heat that short specification sheets do not describe. Look for independent testing of the exact SKU if acoustic comfort is important; do not generalize from a different processor option.
For color-critical work
Calibrate the display when possible and keep a color-managed export workflow. The Yoga’s broad listed gamut and the Spectre’s DCI-P3 coverage are advantages, not guarantees that every application displays colors identically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPortability, charging and daily carry
Compare the complete kit, not the bare computer: device, keyboard or cover, pen, charger and any protective case. A detachable tablet may be lighter in hand while the full keyboard-and-pen kit adds volume in a bag. A convertible may carry more like one object but remain heavier when held in tablet mode. Exact weights and battery runtimes vary by configuration and are not stated uniformly here, so use the manufacturer’s figure for the precise model and test your own unplugged workflow before relying on it for all-day classes.
Total-cost checklist
Build a simple ownership total before ordering:
- Start with the exact computer configuration, including processor, memory and storage.
- Add the active pen if it is not explicitly included.
- Add the keyboard or cover for Surface Pro 11 if you need laptop-style typing.
- Include the correct charger, a protective case and replacement pen tips.
- Check warranty length, accidental-damage options and return terms in your region.
- Recheck the bundle contents at checkout; retailer bundles can change without changing the product family name.
This method prevents a low headline price from hiding the accessories required for note-taking and drawing.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the HP Spectre x360 14 if…
- You want the closest 360-degree replacement for the Yoga.
- You value a 2.8K OLED panel, 120Hz capability and 100% DCI-P3 coverage.
- You type as much as you write or draw.
- You have confirmed that the particular listing includes, or is priced correctly with, the optional MPP 2.0 tilt pen.
Choose the Surface Pro 11 if…
- Your primary activity is drawing or handwritten annotation.
- You want to remove the keyboard completely while using the screen as a tablet.
- You are comfortable budgeting separately for Slim Pen and keyboard accessories.
- You prefer a detachable, stand-supported setup for desk or travel use.
Keep the Yoga 9 Gen 11 if…
- The listed 2.8K OLED, 120Hz and very broad color coverage match your work.
- You want the Yoga Pen Gen 2 and case included rather than sourced separately.
- You prefer one integrated machine that changes modes without removing a keyboard.
Before you place the order
- Write down the exact model or product number, not just the family name.
- Confirm display resolution, OLED or LCD type, refresh behavior and color coverage.
- Confirm whether the pen is included, which protocol it uses and how it charges.
- Check keyboard, charger, case and replacement-tip contents.
- Verify compatibility with your note-taking and drawing applications, including pressure and tilt features.
- Compare the complete carried weight and warranty for the configuration you will actually use.
- Read the return policy in case palm rejection, glare or pen feel does not suit your workflow.
Final verdict
For the most familiar replacement, buy the HP Spectre x360 14 after confirming the pen bundle. For the most natural drawing posture, choose the Microsoft Surface Pro 11 and budget for its Slim Pen and keyboard separately if needed. The Lenovo Yoga 9 2-in-1 14 Gen 11 remains the reference point because it combines a 2.8K 120Hz OLED canvas, exceptionally broad listed color coverage, four convertible modes and a bundled Yoga Pen Gen 2 in one package.
