For most buyers, the best alternative to Lenovo’s Legion Go S running SteamOS is the Valve Steam Deck OLED. It offers the most coherent SteamOS-first experience and the clearest connection to a Steam library. Choose the ASUS ROG Ally X instead if you need Windows launchers, Xbox PC Game Pass, mods, or desktop software. Choose the MSI Claw 8 AI+ or Claw 8 EX AI+ when a premium large display and additional performance headroom matter more than price.
The Legion Go S is an unusually specific target: an 8-inch, 16:10, 120Hz handheld available with SteamOS or Windows, Ryzen Z2 Go or Ryzen Z1 Extreme processors, up to 32GB of LPDDR5X memory, up to 1TB of PCIe Gen4 storage, a 55.5Wh battery, and an announced weight of about 730g. The right replacement depends less on the processor name printed on the box than on operating-system friction, sustained performance, battery size, display priorities, ergonomics, and the exact regional SKU.

What the Lenovo Legion Go S SteamOS model is
Lenovo’s Legion Go S is the reference point for this comparison, not a generic “Lenovo handheld.” Lenovo lists the family with either SteamOS or Windows, configurations reaching 32GB of LPDDR5X memory and 1TB of PCIe Gen4 storage. Lenovo’s CES announcement describes an 8-inch WUXGA 16:10 120Hz PureSight touch display, Ryzen Z2 Go or Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor options, LPDDR5X memory running at up to 7500MHz, a 55.5Wh battery, and a weight of approximately 1.61lb (730g). Lenovo’s PSREF identifies a SteamOS configuration with 16GB of soldered LPDDR5X-7500 and an announce date of May 28, 2025.

The alternatives below do not all pursue the same design goal. Steam Deck OLED is a SteamOS-centered console experience. ROG Ally X is a Windows computer that happens to fit in your hands. MSI’s Claw 8 AI+ and Claw 8 EX AI+ occupy a premium performance-and-display position. Treat them as different answers to different problems rather than as interchangeable benchmark entries.

Valve Steam Deck OLED: the best SteamOS-first alternative
Why it is the natural replacement
Steam Deck OLED is the closest conceptual alternative when your main requirement is “a handheld that behaves like a console while playing my Steam games.” SteamOS puts the library, controller navigation, suspend-and-resume behavior, and game-compatibility information in one place. The Steam Verified system gives you a visible starting point when deciding which games are likely to work well on a handheld screen and control layout.
That simplicity is the reason to choose it, not a claim that it wins every performance comparison. There is no universal ranking of frame rates, battery endurance, or resolution between Steam Deck OLED and the Legion Go S. A buyer who values a predictable Steam interface should weigh the software experience more heavily than a headline processor label.
Where SteamOS helps
- One primary library: Steam purchases, downloads, controller settings, and updates are organized around the same interface.
- Lower interface friction: You can avoid starting in a Windows desktop, arranging launcher windows, or navigating touch-first controls for routine play.
- Compatibility guidance: Steam Verified status and related compatibility information make it easier to screen a large library before installation.
- Handheld focus: The system is designed around controller navigation rather than treating the controller as an accessory to a desktop.
When it is the wrong alternative
Steam Deck OLED is a poor fit if your library depends heavily on several non-Steam launchers, Xbox PC Game Pass, desktop applications, or extensive Windows-only mod tooling. Some games and services can require workarounds, and a workaround may defeat the reason you bought a console-like handheld. If those services are central rather than occasional, ROG Ally X is the more direct answer.
Who should buy it
Choose Steam Deck OLED when most of your games are on Steam, you want the least distracting handheld interface, and you accept that SteamOS is narrower than Windows. It is also the sensible choice for someone who would rather use a documented compatibility label than troubleshoot every title individually.
ASUS ROG Ally X: the best Windows-flexibility alternative
Why Windows changes the decision
ROG Ally X is the strongest general-purpose Windows alternative in this group. Windows gives you direct access to multiple PC launchers, Xbox PC Game Pass, traditional mod managers, and desktop software. That breadth is valuable when the handheld is expected to replace a small laptop as well as a console.
Rank #2
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The trade-off is operational rather than theoretical. Windows was designed for a desktop with a pointer, keyboard, and larger screen. On a handheld, you may need to manage launchers, notifications, updates, sign-in dialogs, display scaling, and touch targets that were not designed around thumb controls. The ROG Ally X makes sense when that flexibility is worth the extra steps.

- Multiple launchers: Keep games from different PC storefronts available without maintaining a separate device for each service.
- Xbox PC Game Pass: Use the Windows ecosystem directly instead of looking for a SteamOS workaround.
- Mods and utilities: Install Windows-native mod tools, overlays, file managers, and configuration utilities.
- Desktop tasks: Run ordinary PC applications when the handheld is docked or connected to a larger display.
What to check before buying
Do not evaluate the Ally X only by its maximum advertised power. Handheld performance depends on the sustained power limit, game resolution, graphics settings, cooling behavior, and whether the device can maintain that level without quickly exhausting its battery. ROG Ally X is among the leading high-performance handhelds, but no universal ranking against every Legion Go S configuration is established.
Confirm the exact memory and storage configuration, included charger, warranty region, and current firmware before purchase. If you expect to play away from an outlet for long sessions, compare the current battery specification and independent endurance testing for the exact SKU you are considering rather than assuming that a similarly named model has the same result.
Who should buy it
Choose ROG Ally X if you already use Windows gaming services or if “can I install this PC program?” is more important than having a single, console-like library. It is the practical choice for a portable PC that must remain a general-purpose Windows computer.
MSI Claw 8 AI+ and Claw 8 EX AI+: the premium display and performance option
Why the Claw belongs on the shortlist
MSI’s Claw 8 AI+ and Claw 8 EX AI+ are credible alternatives for buyers who put a premium on a large, high-quality display and performance headroom. Claw models are among the leading handheld PCs, and PC Gamer reports a substantial performance uplift for the Claw 8 EX AI+ in its testing. That is useful evidence for its positioning, but it is not a promise that the Claw wins every game or every power setting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhere the premium can make sense
- Display priority: A larger OLED-oriented panel can make games, text, and cinematic content more appealing, especially if you spend most of your time playing handheld rather than docked.
- Performance headroom: Extra capacity can help when you are willing to tune settings for higher frame rates or more demanding games.
- Longer ownership horizon: Buyers who dislike replacing hardware quickly may value additional headroom, provided the price difference fits the budget.
Why price discipline matters
PC Gamer notes that the Claw 8 EX AI+ costs materially more than competing devices. The premium is rational only when the display, performance, or preferred configuration directly addresses your priorities. Paying more for specifications you will not notice at your normal resolution, power limit, or game settings is not an upgrade in practical terms.

SteamOS or Windows: the decision that matters most
Choose SteamOS when the handheld is primarily a console
SteamOS is the better fit when your library is concentrated on Steam and you want the shortest path from power button to game. Its value is consistency: controller-first navigation, a unified library, and visible compatibility guidance. Steam Deck OLED is the clearest alternative built around that model, while the SteamOS version of the Legion Go S follows the same basic philosophy.
Choose Windows when the handheld is also a PC
Windows is the better fit when you expect to install several launchers, use Xbox PC Game Pass, manage mods, run desktop applications, or connect peripherals and utilities that assume a conventional PC. ROG Ally X is the clearest Windows-first choice in this comparison. Accept that you will spend more time managing the operating system itself.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A practical launcher test
- List the five games or services you will use most often.
- Mark where each one is purchased or subscribed: Steam, another PC launcher, Xbox PC Game Pass, or a standalone Windows installation.
- Mark whether each title needs a Windows-only anti-cheat system, mod manager, or utility.
- If most marks are Steam-only, favor SteamOS. If several marks depend on Windows, favor ROG Ally X or another Windows handheld.
Performance: compare sustained play, not chip names
The Legion Go S can use a Ryzen Z2 Go or Ryzen Z1 Extreme, and the Claw 8 EX AI+ has received strong performance commentary in testing. Those facts identify the devices’ positioning but do not create a universal league table. A handheld’s result changes with the game, resolution, graphics preset, frame-rate target, power mode, cooling, driver version, and background software.
Use this order when comparing a specific configuration:
- Set the same target: Compare the same game, resolution, graphics preset, and frame-rate limit.
- Use a realistic power mode: A result at a maximum plugged-in setting may not represent how you will play on battery.
- Check sustained behavior: Look for performance after the device has been running long enough to reach normal temperatures, not only a short opening benchmark.
- Account for screen resolution: A device driving more pixels may need different settings to reach the same frame rate.
- Include noise and comfort: A small gain is less useful if fan noise, heat, or weight makes you stop playing.
For a buying decision, “fastest” should mean the fastest option at the power limit and settings you will actually use. The Claw 8 EX AI+ is a strong performer, but it is not the universal winner.

Battery and portability: translate specifications into your routine
Lenovo specifies a 55.5Wh battery and approximately 730g for the Legion Go S announcement. Those are concrete reference points, but battery capacity alone does not predict play time. Processor load, screen brightness, refresh rate, frame-rate target, wireless radios, and the game itself all change endurance.
For each alternative, compare the current retail SKU’s battery capacity and independent endurance measurements under a similar workload. Keep the test conditions beside the number: a low-power indie game at reduced brightness is not comparable with a demanding 3D title at a high refresh rate. Do not transfer the Legion Go S figure to Steam Deck OLED, ROG Ally X, or MSI Claw without a source for that exact model.
Weight and screen size trade-offs
The Legion Go S’s announced 730g weight and 8-inch screen illustrate the central compromise. A larger display can improve readability and immersion, but a larger handheld can also feel heavier during a long session. The MSI Claw’s large-display appeal therefore needs to be judged alongside grip comfort and the way you actually play: seated at a desk, on a sofa, or while traveling.
When possible, hold the device with your normal case or grip accessories and test the controls at the edges of the screen. Ergonomics are difficult to infer from a spec sheet, and no single weight or screen size is comfortable for every hand.

Display priorities
The Legion Go S reference panel is an 8-inch 16:10 120Hz touch display. That combination favors a taller workspace than a 16:9 panel and leaves room for a high-refresh presentation when a game can use it. A premium OLED-oriented alternative such as the MSI Claw targets contrast and visual quality rather than simply copying Lenovo’s panel specification.

Ask which characteristic you notice most: screen size, OLED contrast, refresh rate, brightness, or text clarity. A higher refresh rate is most useful when the game and power mode can sustain it. OLED contrast is most obvious in dark scenes. A larger panel can help with interface-heavy games but increases the physical footprint.

Memory and storage
Lenovo lists Legion Go S configurations up to 32GB of LPDDR5X memory and up to 1TB of PCIe Gen4 storage. The identified SteamOS PSREF SKU has 16GB of soldered LPDDR5X-7500, so you cannot treat memory as a later upgrade on that configuration. Confirm the exact amount before checkout.
Storage capacity determines how many large games you can keep installed, while memory affects how comfortably the system handles demanding games and multitasking. Compare like-for-like capacities between alternatives and account for the space consumed by the operating system and recovery partitions. A nominal 1TB drive does not provide 1TB of free game-install space.
Price, availability, and regional SKU checks
Prices and stock for all of these handhelds vary by country, retailer, promotion, and configuration. A launch price or a price seen in another market is not a reliable purchase quote. Check the live listing immediately before buying and record the exact model number.
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm whether the listing is SteamOS or Windows.
- Confirm processor, RAM, and SSD capacity rather than relying on a family name.
- Check whether the advertised display is the panel described for that SKU.
- Verify charger, warranty, keyboard layout where applicable, and return terms for your region.
- Review current driver, firmware, and operating-system support before payment.
Do not pay a premium for a higher specification that is unavailable in your region’s warranty channel or that requires importing a model with uncertain support.
Which alternative should you buy?
Buy Steam Deck OLED if your priority is simplicity
Select Steam Deck OLED when Steam is your main library, you want a console-like interface, and clear compatibility guidance matters more than broad Windows access. It is the most direct answer to the question, “What is the best SteamOS alternative to the Legion Go S?”
Buy ROG Ally X if your priority is access
Select ROG Ally X when your games and applications are spread across launchers, Xbox PC Game Pass, mods, and ordinary Windows software. It is the better portable computer, provided you are willing to manage Windows on a small touch screen.
Buy MSI Claw 8 AI+ or EX AI+ if your priority is premium hardware
Select an MSI Claw 8 model when a large OLED-oriented display and performance headroom justify a higher price. Compare the exact model and current configuration, and make sure you will notice the benefit in the games you actually play.
Stay with the Legion Go S SteamOS when its balance is right
The Legion Go S remains a sensible choice if you specifically want an 8-inch 16:10 120Hz screen, SteamOS, the available Ryzen options, up to 32GB memory, up to 1TB storage, and a 55.5Wh battery in a package announced at about 730g. None of the alternatives automatically replaces every one of those characteristics.
A purchase checklist
- Choose SteamOS or Windows before comparing processor tiers.
- Write down the launchers, subscriptions, and mods you need to run.
- Set a realistic handheld power mode and frame-rate target.
- Compare the exact battery, weight, display, memory, and storage specifications for the regional SKU.
- Check sustained-performance evidence for the games you play, not a single headline benchmark.
- Confirm current price, stock, warranty, return policy, firmware, and driver support.
- Buy the model whose compromises you can live with, rather than the one with the longest specification list.
Bottom line
Steam Deck OLED is the best all-around alternative for a SteamOS-first buyer. ROG Ally X is the better answer for Windows flexibility, Game Pass, multiple launchers, mods, and desktop use. MSI Claw 8 AI+ and Claw 8 EX AI+ are the premium choices when display quality and performance headroom warrant their higher price. The Legion Go S itself remains competitive when its 8-inch 120Hz display, SteamOS option, memory ceiling, storage options, battery, and weight match your priorities. Decide on the operating system first, then verify the exact regional SKU and compare sustained use rather than relying on a processor name alone.
