For the closest pocket-sized substitute, choose the 8BitDo Micro. It is smaller and lighter than the CRKD Atom+, lasts up to 12 hours per charge, and works with Switch, Switch 2 and Android. Its compromise is fundamental: it is a digital, 2D-focused controller without analog sticks, vibration or motion sensing. If you need full modern controls, keep the Atom+; if you want the lightest keychain pad, choose 8BitDo Zero 2; and if you want a controller that physically holds your phone, look at GameSir Pocket Taco, Razer Kishi V2 or Backbone One.
What the CRKD Atom+ does, and what an alternative must match
The CRKD Atom+ is a standalone Bluetooth gamepad rather than a phone shell. CRKD lists support for Switch 2 and Switch, PC and PC handhelds, mobile devices, tablets and selected smart TVs. Its 90 mm by 48 mm body contains dual TMR thumbsticks, triggers, shoulder buttons, vibration, motion controls and programmable buttons, plus a rechargeable USB-C battery. That combination makes it unusually small without giving up the controls expected by modern 3D games.

There is an important distinction between the Atom+ and the original CRKD Atom. The original model measures 68 by 35 by 12 mm and is rated for eight to 10 hours of play with a two-hour charge. CRKD lists it for Switch, PC and Mac, mobile and tablet devices, and smart TVs. It is even easier to carry, but its published size is a reminder that the smallest controller is not automatically the most versatile.

1. 8BitDo Micro: the closest pure pocket substitute
8BitDo describes Micro as a “pocket-sized Bluetooth controller.” At 72 by 40.7 by 14.1 mm and 24.8 g, it occupies less space than the Atom+’s listed 90 by 48 mm footprint and is light enough to disappear in a coin pocket, small pouch or keychain case. Its published 12-hour play rating is also longer than the original Atom’s eight- to 10-hour rating. The manufacturer quotes a one- to two-hour charge time.
What you can play
Micro is built around digital input. 8BitDo positions it for 2D games, so it suits platformers, puzzle games, menu navigation, turn-based titles and retro collections. It does not provide the dual analog sticks and analog triggers found on Atom+. The official feature list also omits vibration, motion sensing, NFC and console-wake support. Those omissions are not defects for a backup controller, but they rule out games that depend on camera control, analog acceleration or gyro aiming.
Platform coverage
Its native support covers Switch, Switch 2 and Android. Keyboard mode extends it to iPhone and iPad, macOS and Windows, but keyboard mode is a different input method from a conventional gamepad profile. Check the mode required by the game or operating system before a trip; a controller that pairs successfully can still expose keys in a way a game does not recognize.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWho should buy it
- Choose Micro when minimum packed size and low weight matter more than analog controls.
- It is a strong spare controller for local multiplayer, travel emergencies and short sessions.
- Do not choose it as the only pad for a library dominated by 3D action, racing or shooters.
2. 8BitDo Zero 2: the lightest keychain option
Zero 2 weighs 20.7 g and measures 73 by 36.5 by 14.7 mm. That makes it 4.1 g lighter than Micro, although it is slightly thicker. Its rechargeable battery is rated for eight hours. The small body is best treated as an ultralight emergency controller rather than a shrunken version of a full gamepad.
Input modes
Zero 2 supports X-input, D-input, Switch and keyboard modes over Bluetooth. X-input is useful for compatible Windows games, D-input covers software that expects the older DirectInput standard, and Switch mode handles Nintendo’s controller profile. Keyboard mode can help with devices or applications that do not accept a normal gamepad profile. Pairing mode and button behavior vary by platform, so select the correct mode before connecting.
Where its layout works
There are no dual analog sticks, so Zero 2 is most comfortable with simple platformers, classic arcade games, turn-based titles and menu control. The tiny buttons can feel cramped during long sessions or games with many simultaneous inputs. Its advantage is that it can stay attached to a keyring or in a very small travel pouch without adding meaningful weight.

Micro or Zero 2?
Pick Micro for the longer 12-hour rating and the slightly more substantial pocket pad. Pick Zero 2 when every gram and millimeter count, and eight hours is enough for the trip. Neither is a full-control replacement for Atom+.
3. GameSir Pocket Taco: a vertical phone gamepad
GameSir Pocket Taco takes a different approach. Instead of being a tiny standalone pad, it clamps around a phone and places the controls in a vertical, Game Boy-like arrangement. The manufacturer lists dimensions of 78 by 70.9 by 20.7 mm, a weight of 62.2 g and a 600 mAh battery. Those figures make it substantially heavier and wider than Micro or Zero 2, but the clamp gives you a handheld screen-and-controls unit in one object.
Why wireless connection matters
Pocket Taco connects over Bluetooth rather than through a phone port. That makes it more tolerant of cases and avoids choosing between a Lightning and USB-C connector. It also means the phone and controller each use their own wireless and battery systems, so check both charge levels before leaving home. Wireless input can add a small amount of latency compared with a direct wired connection, although no measured latency figure is provided.
Supported devices
GameSir lists Android, iOS, PC and Nintendo Switch compatibility. Because the controller grips a phone, verify that your handset fits the clamp and that the vertical orientation works with the games you intend to play. A phone-mounted layout is convenient for cloud, streaming and mobile games, but it is not as pocketable as carrying a standalone Micro or Zero 2.
When Pocket Taco is the better choice
- Choose it when your phone is the screen you will use most and you want both hands on physical controls.
- It is preferable to a tiny digital pad for longer mobile sessions because the phone is supported rather than held separately.
- It is a poor fit if your priority is the smallest possible item or if you dislike carrying a controller attached to your phone.
4. Razer Kishi V2: a phone-first controller for longer sessions
Razer Kishi V2 is designed around direct phone play and a more conventional controller layout. The cited compatibility information specifically includes Android devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S23 and Google Pixel 6, 7 and 8 families. Its role is different from Micro and Zero 2: you carry a larger phone-mounted accessory in exchange for controls that are more familiar during extended mobile play.
Check compatibility before packing
Phone-mounted controllers are sensitive to device dimensions, port location, camera modules and protective cases. Confirm that your exact handset appears in the current compatibility list and that the case can be removed or accommodated. The cited material does not establish Kishi V2’s packed dimensions, weight, battery specification or a universal iOS compatibility claim, so do not assume that every phone will fit from the Android examples alone.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

Who benefits from Kishi V2
It is the sensible direction for someone who plays on a phone for hours and wants a conventional left stick, right stick, triggers and shoulder controls rather than a tiny digital travel pad. It is not a pocket substitute for Atom+: the phone itself remains part of the carry, and the accessory is built for a different priority.
5. Backbone One: only after checking the handset and case
Backbone One is another phone-mounted alternative. Its support documentation warns that case thickness and camera bumps can prevent a phone from fitting. That makes compatibility a physical measurement problem, not merely a software question.
A practical fit check
- Identify the exact phone model and the case thickness you will use while traveling.
- Compare those dimensions with the current Backbone One support requirements for your model.
- Pay particular attention to the camera bump and the phone’s port position, which can stop the side arms from seating correctly.
- Test the fully assembled phone before a trip, including charging, audio and any buttons hidden by the case.
If you cannot remove the case or verify the camera clearance, a standalone Bluetooth controller avoids this particular fit risk.

Standalone Bluetooth or phone-mounted: make the right choice
Choose standalone Bluetooth when portability is the priority
Atom+, Micro and Zero 2 are independent controllers. They can pair with a Switch, tablet, computer or phone without turning the phone into a physical part of the controller. They pack more easily, can serve several devices and let you put the phone on a stand. Micro and Zero 2 are especially useful as backup controllers because their weight is measured in grams rather than the weight of a phone accessory plus the handset.
Choose phone-mounted when the phone is your main console
Pocket Taco, Kishi V2 and Backbone One keep the screen between the controls. This reduces the need for a separate stand and gives a more console-like grip for mobile or streaming games. The trade-off is bulk, handset fit and case management. A phone-mounted controller is not automatically more portable: the phone must remain attached, and a camera bump or thick case can prevent use.
Control layout matters more than the smallest measurement

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Full modern layout: Atom+ has dual TMR sticks, triggers, shoulder buttons, vibration and motion controls. It is the right baseline for 3D games and motion-enabled software.
- Digital pocket layout: Micro and Zero 2 omit analog sticks. They excel at 2D and retro games but cannot reproduce analog steering, pressure-sensitive acceleration or independent camera movement.
- Phone-handheld layout: Pocket Taco, Kishi V2 and Backbone One are built around holding a handset. Their value comes from ergonomics and screen integration rather than the smallest standalone dimensions.
Do not select a controller solely by length and weight. A 20.7 g Zero 2 is the lightest choice, but it cannot replace a dual-stick controller. Conversely, a 62.2 g Pocket Taco is heavier than both 8BitDo models, yet it may be the most comfortable option when the phone is your primary display.
Battery planning for travel
Published battery figures are not directly comparable because manufacturers may use different test conditions. The available ratings still establish useful ordering: Micro is rated for up to 12 hours, Zero 2 for up to eight hours, and the original Atom for eight to 10 hours with a two-hour charge. Pocket Taco’s 600 mAh capacity is listed without a play-time estimate, while Atom+’s cited page lists a rechargeable USB-C battery without a play-time figure.
For a trip, charge the controller and the device it will operate before departure. Carry the correct cable, and remember that a phone-mounted Bluetooth controller can draw power from its own battery while the phone is also consuming power for the display and wireless connection. A small digital pad may last longer in practice simply because it does not drive a screen or run a game.
Buying checklist
- Game type: Need camera control, analog steering or gyro? Choose Atom+ or a phone-mounted controller with a full modern layout; Micro and Zero 2 are digital-only.
- Device mix: For Switch plus Android, Micro offers the clearest compact match. For iOS, verify whether you will use Micro’s keyboard mode or choose a phone-mounted model with confirmed support.
- Carry method: A pocket or keychain favors Micro or Zero 2. A backpack and phone-first setup can accommodate Pocket Taco, Kishi V2 or Backbone One.
- Case use: Pocket Taco’s wireless clamp avoids a connector choice, while Backbone One requires careful case and camera-bump verification.
- Session length: Short backup sessions favor the lightest digital pads. Longer play favors a larger, more conventional grip.
- Platform switching: Check the correct Bluetooth mode—Switch, X-input, D-input or keyboard—before pairing with a new device.
Recommendations by traveler
For the smallest serious backup
Choose 8BitDo Micro. Its 24.8 g weight, 72 by 40.7 by 14.1 mm dimensions and 12-hour rating make it the most balanced pocket substitute, provided your games are comfortable with digital controls.
For the lightest possible keychain pad
Choose 8BitDo Zero 2. At 20.7 g, it is the lightest listed option. Accept the eight-hour rating and the cramped, digital-only layout in exchange for minimal carry weight.

Choose Kishi V2 when you want a conventional phone-controller layout and your Android handset is confirmed compatible. Choose Backbone One only after checking the exact phone, case thickness and camera clearance.
Bottom line
8BitDo Micro is the best all-around alternative for travelers who define “pocket-sized” as a standalone controller and mostly play 2D games. Zero 2 wins on weight, while Pocket Taco, Kishi V2 and Backbone One address a different need: turning a phone into the handheld. Atom+ remains the compact choice when modern dual-stick, trigger, vibration and motion controls matter more than carrying the absolute smallest pad.
