Choose the Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2 for the largest, highest-refresh OLED screen; the MSI Claw 8 AI+ for 32GB of memory, Wi-Fi 7 and two Thunderbolt 4 ports; the Steam Deck OLED for a lighter SteamOS experience; or a discounted ROG Ally X (2024) for broad Windows game-launcher support at a lower effective cost.
The X20 remains the premium all-round Windows reference: ASUS lists it at $1,299.99 in the United States, with an 80Wh battery, 24GB RAM, a 1TB SSD and a 7.4-inch 120Hz OLED display. None of the alternatives is universally faster or better. The right choice depends on screen size, software ecosystem, memory, ports, weight, battery efficiency and the price available in your region.

Its AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor has eight cores and 16 threads, boosts to 5.0GHz and includes an XDNA neural-processing unit rated at up to 50 TOPS. ASUS pairs it with 24GB of LPDDR5X memory and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD.
Its 7.4-inch, 1920×1080 OLED touchscreen runs at 120Hz. ASUS rates the panel at 600 nits for SDR and up to 1,400 nits for HDR, with Dolby Vision and FreeSync Premium Pro. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6E, one USB 4 Type-C port, one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port and a microSD Express reader. The 80Wh, four-cell battery is substantial for a handheld, while the listed weight is 756g. Eligible markets include a bundled two-month Xbox Game Pass Premium offer.

Those specifications establish the X20 as a premium Windows handheld, not a baseline that every rival must beat. Alternatives make deliberate compromises: one may provide a larger OLED panel, another more memory and faster I/O, while SteamOS can be simpler than Windows if your library is mostly on Steam.

Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2: best large-screen OLED alternative
Why it stands out
The Legion Go Gen 2 is the clearest choice when display area and OLED contrast matter more than compactness. Its 8.8-inch WUXGA panel has a 1920×1200 resolution and 144Hz refresh rate, giving you a taller workspace and a higher maximum refresh than the X20’s 7.4-inch 120Hz display. Lenovo lists 100% DCI-P3 coverage, 500-nit typical brightness, 1,100-nit peak brightness and DisplayHDR True Black 1000.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That extra 1.4 inches is noticeable for strategy games, desktop interfaces and split-screen layouts. OLED’s pixel-level black control also helps dark scenes look deeper than on a conventional LCD. The 16:10 aspect ratio provides 120 additional vertical pixels compared with the X20’s 16:9 panel, although games that render natively at 16:9 may show small side bars or require scaling.
Controllers and portability
Detachable controllers give the Legion Go Gen 2 a more console-like tabletop mode. You can place the screen on its stand and play without holding the full chassis, which is useful for long sessions or when connecting to a television. The trade-off is size: Lenovo’s larger chassis is less pocketable than the X20, and the supplied specifications do not state a weight for direct comparison.
Battery and performance expectations
Lenovo lists a 74Wh battery, smaller than the X20 and MSI’s 80Wh units. Capacity alone cannot establish which device lasts longer. The larger, higher-refresh panel can consume more power when brightness and refresh rate are high, while a 60Hz cap and an appropriate power mode can reduce draw. No independent apples-to-apples performance ranking is established for these models, so choose the Legion Go Gen 2 for its display and controller design rather than an assumed frame-rate advantage.

- Windows users comfortable carrying a larger device.
MSI Claw 8 AI+: best for memory and connectivity
Hardware for demanding multitasking
The MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM is the practical alternative when memory capacity and external connectivity are priorities. MSI lists up to an Intel Core Ultra 7 Series 2 processor, Intel Arc 140V graphics and 32GB of LPDDR5x-8533 memory. That is 8GB more than the X20’s 24GB configuration, giving extra headroom for games that stream large assets, background applications, browser tabs or local tools.

It can, however, reduce pressure from multitasking and help avoid swapping when a game and several Windows applications are open. The eventual performance depends on the selected processor configuration, power limit, cooling profile and game settings; published material here does not provide a controlled benchmark against the X20.
Ports and wireless networking
Two Thunderbolt 4 ports are the Claw’s defining connectivity advantage. They can simplify simultaneous use of a high-speed dock, external display and storage, subject to the capabilities of the connected accessories. MSI also lists Wi-Fi 7 and a microSD reader. Wi-Fi 7 requires a compatible router and network environment; it does not make an ordinary Wi-Fi connection faster by itself.
Screen, battery and weight
The 8-inch 1920×1200 touchscreen supports a 48–120Hz variable-refresh range. Variable refresh can match the panel more closely to fluctuating game frame rates, reducing tearing without forcing a fixed 120Hz mode. MSI lists an 80Wh battery, equal in stated capacity to the X20, but the Claw weighs 795g—39g more than the X20. That difference is modest on paper but can matter during long handheld sessions.
Who should buy it
- Players who want up to 32GB of RAM for memory-heavy games and multitasking.
- Users with Thunderbolt 4 docks, external GPUs, displays or fast storage.
- People upgrading to a Wi-Fi 7 network and wanting current wireless hardware.
- Buyers willing to accept the heaviest listed device in exchange for connectivity.
Steam Deck OLED: best SteamOS and value-oriented alternative
A different software priority
The Steam Deck OLED is the strongest alternative when your library is primarily on Steam and you prefer SteamOS over Windows. SteamOS presents a console-style interface, unified game installation and system controls without the desktop launcher management that Windows handhelds require. Its compatibility layer supports many Windows games, but compatibility is title-specific; games that depend on unsupported launchers, anti-cheat systems or unusual peripherals may require troubleshooting.
Windows handhelds offer broader native access to Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic and GOG libraries from one device. The Steam Deck OLED is therefore not a direct software replacement for every X20 use case. It is a deliberate choice to prioritize Steam integration and a lighter, more appliance-like experience.

- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY HUB: Expand your gaming horizons with this gamepad's versatile array of ports, including two USB4 40Gbps ports
Weight, storage and battery
At 640g, the Steam Deck OLED is 116g lighter than the X20 and 155g lighter than the Claw 8 AI+ listed weight. Valve offers 512GB and 1TB storage configurations. TechRadar’s 2026 roundup reports approximately 2–8 hours of battery life depending on workload; demanding 3D games can sit near the lower end, while lighter games can approach the upper end. Exact pricing and stock vary by region, so compare the configuration available where you live rather than assuming a universal price.
Screen and performance trade-offs
The 7.4-inch OLED screen matches the X20’s diagonal size, but the supplied specifications do not state a refresh rate or brightness figure for a direct panel comparison. The Deck’s appeal is efficiency, ergonomics and software coherence rather than a claim of top-end performance. If you need Windows-only launchers, Game Pass installation or a specific anti-cheat-supported multiplayer title, verify compatibility before buying.
Who should buy it
- Steam-first players who want the simplest handheld console interface.
- People who value a 640g device and established SteamOS controls.
- Buyers whose preferred games run well through SteamOS compatibility support.
- Anyone prioritizing ecosystem value over maximum Windows launcher flexibility.
ROG Ally X (2024): best discounted Windows fallback
The 2024 ROG Ally X remains relevant when retailers discount it substantially. ASUS describes it as a Windows handheld with a larger battery and storage configuration than the original Ally, revised controls and support for Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic and GOG libraries. That broad Windows compatibility is its main reason to consider it.
It is not an X20 equivalent. The Ally X uses older hardware and an LCD screen, while the X20 moves to the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme platform and OLED display. A discount can make the older model sensible for buyers who want Windows game access and are willing to give up the X20’s display quality and newer processing platform. Compare the actual sale price, warranty terms and included accessories; do not pay a small discount for substantially older hardware.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose among the four alternatives
Choose by screen
Pick the Legion Go Gen 2 if physical size, OLED contrast, 16:10 workspace and 144Hz are your top priorities. Pick the X20 if you want a smaller 1080p OLED with very high quoted HDR brightness. The Claw 8 AI+ sits between them at 8 inches and adds variable refresh from 48 to 120Hz. The Steam Deck OLED matches the X20’s 7.4-inch diagonal but has fewer published panel details in the specifications available here.
Choose by software library
Windows is the safer choice for a mixed library: the X20, Legion Go Gen 2, Claw 8 AI+ and Ally X can run Windows versions of Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic and GOG, subject to each game’s launcher and anti-cheat requirements. SteamOS is compelling when Steam is your main source and you want a console-like interface. Check individual game compatibility before assuming a Windows-only title will work perfectly on SteamOS.

Choose by memory and expansion
The Claw 8 AI+ leads the listed configurations with up to 32GB of LPDDR5x-8533. The X20 provides 24GB and a 1TB SSD. The Legion Go Gen 2 memory and storage figures are not stated in the supplied specifications, so confirm the exact regional configuration before ordering. The Steam Deck OLED comes in 512GB and 1TB versions. All storage figures should be considered alongside microSD performance and the size of your game library.
Choose by mobility
The Steam Deck OLED is the lightest at 640g. The X20 is 756g, and the Claw 8 AI+ is 795g. The Legion Go Gen 2’s weight is not stated here, but its larger screen and detachable controllers make it the least pocket-oriented design. For commuting, weight and grip comfort can matter more than a small specification advantage; for tabletop use, a stand and detachable controllers may matter more.
Battery life: how to compare the numbers honestly
An 80Wh battery stores more energy than a 74Wh battery under the same conditions, but handheld runtime also depends on efficiency. A game rendered at a high frame rate with maximum brightness and a high power limit can exhaust either battery quickly. Capping a game at 40 or 60 frames per second, reducing brightness, selecting a suitable refresh rate and using a balanced power profile can extend play time.
Do not convert the X20’s, Claw’s or Legion’s watt-hour rating into an exact number of gaming hours. ASUS, MSI and Lenovo provide capacities here, not a common laboratory runtime test. The Steam Deck’s 2–8-hour range comes from TechRadar’s workload-dependent testing and cannot be transferred to the Windows models.
Windows handheld setup checklist
- Install updates first. Complete Windows, firmware, chipset, graphics and controller updates before judging stability or battery behavior.
- Set a display mode. Choose 60Hz when battery life matters, or 120Hz/144Hz when a game can sustain the higher refresh. Avoid leaving maximum refresh enabled for every title.
- Set a frame-rate target. A fixed 30, 40 or 60 frames per second target often gives smoother pacing and more predictable power use than an unrestricted frame rate.
- Configure each launcher. Sign in to Steam, Xbox, Epic or GOG only if you use that library, and disable unnecessary launchers from starting with Windows.
- Test storage expansion. Format and benchmark a compatible microSD card before moving a large library. Keep the internal SSD for games that need the fastest loading or streaming performance.
- Prepare charging and docking. Use a USB-C Power Delivery charger and verify that its output and the dock’s pass-through rating meet the handheld’s requirements. Exact wattage compatibility varies by model and accessory.
- Check ergonomics. Play for 20–30 minutes in your normal grip before committing to a purchase when possible. Listed weight does not describe balance, grip thickness or button reach.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying by battery capacity alone. Watt-hours are energy capacity, not a guaranteed runtime ranking.
- Assuming OLED means the same experience everywhere. Size, resolution, brightness, refresh range, HDR support and color coverage differ between panels.
- Comparing processor names without power limits. Sustained performance depends on cooling and the selected power mode; no apples-to-apples benchmark is established here.
- Ignoring launcher compatibility. A SteamOS device may need extra work for a Windows-only launcher or anti-cheat system.
- Forgetting total carry weight. A charger, case, dock and external storage can add more than the difference between two handhelds.
- Paying near-current prices for older hardware. The Ally X makes sense as a discounted Windows option, not as a substitute for the X20’s OLED and newer platform at a similar price.
Which alternative is right for you?
Choose the Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2 when the largest OLED image, 144Hz refresh and detachable-controller flexibility outweigh portability. Choose the MSI Claw 8 AI+ when 32GB memory, Wi-Fi 7 and two Thunderbolt 4 ports solve problems you actually have. Choose the Steam Deck OLED when SteamOS simplicity, lower weight and a Steam-focused library matter most. Choose the ROG Ally X (2024) only when its discount makes the older LCD-based Windows platform a clearly better value.
Stay with the ROG Xbox Ally X20 if you want the most balanced premium Windows package in this comparison: 24GB RAM, 1TB storage, an 80Wh battery, a bright 120Hz OLED display and modern USB 4 connectivity in a 756g chassis. Its $1,299.99 US list price is high, but the alternatives improve specific priorities rather than replacing every part of its specification.
