The Sony NW-ZX707 and Sony NW-WM1AM2 are the clearest specification-backed alternatives to the Astell&Kern PD5. Choose the NW-ZX707 if you want a compact Android player with a large screen and broad app flexibility. Choose the NW-WM1AM2 if you value 128 GB of built-in storage and longer Walkman-app battery estimates. Keep the PD5 in consideration if its compact body, 4.4 mm balanced output and stated high output in Octa mode fit your headphones.

Those are feature and use-case recommendations, not a sound-quality ranking. The published specifications and the available review do not establish a controlled, head-to-head listening winner.

What makes a useful PD5 alternative?

A dedicated digital audio player (DAP) replaces a phone as the source for locally stored music, high-resolution downloads and, on suitable models, streaming apps. The important question is not which player advertises the largest sample-rate number. It is whether the player supports your files, drives your headphones, stores enough music, runs the services you use and lasts long enough for your listening routine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For this comparison, the decisive checks are:

  • Format support: PCM sample rates, DSD handling and the file types in your library.
  • Headphone connection: 3.5 mm unbalanced, 4.4 mm balanced, and whether your headphones need substantial voltage or current.
  • Storage: usable internal memory and microSD expansion.
  • Software: operating system, Wi-Fi and the availability of streaming apps in your region.
  • Battery: the playback condition behind each estimate, rather than a single best-case figure.
  • Physical use: screen size, dimensions and weight when the player is carried every day.
  • Price and support: current local price, stock, warranty, return terms and software support.

The PD5 is the baseline because it combines high-resolution playback, dual headphone outputs and a small chassis. The two Sony models take different approaches to the same job: the NW-ZX707 emphasizes Android usability, while the NW-WM1AM2 emphasizes storage and long playback in Sony’s own app.

Astell&Kern PD5: the baseline to beat

High-resolution formats

Astell&Kern lists PCM playback from 8 kHz through 384 kHz and native DSD64, DSD128 and DSD256. That covers the common high-resolution PCM and DSD formats used by download stores and personal libraries. Check the exact container and encoding of unusual files before buying; a maximum sample rate alone does not guarantee compatibility with every format variation.

Headphone connections and output claim

The PD5 provides both a 3.5 mm unbalanced jack and a 4.4 mm balanced jack. In Octa mode, Astell&Kern lists up to 4 Vrms from the unbalanced output and 8 Vrms from the balanced output under no-load conditions. These are mode- and measurement-condition-specific figures, so they must not be treated as a universal power rating or compared directly with a differently specified Sony number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 4.4 mm socket is useful when your cable and headphones are wired for balanced operation. It is not an automatic sound-quality upgrade: the audible result still depends on the headphone, cable wiring, gain and listening level. Do not use a passive 3.5-to-4.4 mm adapter unless its wiring is explicitly safe for the player.

Size and connectivity

The chassis measures 69.7 × 119.7 × 16.1 mm and weighs about 198 g. Dual-band Wi-Fi supports network functions, and Bluetooth 5.3 is specified with a manufacturer-listed codec set. The small body is an advantage for pocket or bag carry, but Astell&Kern’s published specifications do not state the PD5’s internal storage capacity or a battery figure, so those should be verified on the current regional product page before purchase.

Sony NW-ZX707: the Android-focused alternative

Why it suits app users

The NW-ZX707 runs Android 12 and has a 5-inch HD display. That makes browsing a large library, entering searches and using compatible streaming applications more phone-like than on a screenless or highly simplified player. Wi-Fi is available, and microSD expansion lets you separate the operating system’s space from a music card.

Sony states 64 GB of internal memory but identifies 47 GB as available. The difference is occupied by the operating system and preinstalled software, so do not plan on treating the nominal capacity as 64 GB of music space.

File support and battery expectation

Sony lists FLAC and WAV playback through 384 kHz and DSD support through 11.2896 MHz. Its Walkman-app estimate is about 21 hours for 192 kHz/24-bit FLAC on either listed headphone connection. That number is a controlled manufacturer estimate: screen use, wireless radios, volume, gain, resampling and a third-party app can all reduce actual runtime.

Headphone connections

The player has a 3.5 mm connection and a balanced headphone connection. That gives owners of balanced cables a direct connection option, but Sony’s published specification presents output information differently from the PD5’s no-load Vrms statement. Avoid declaring one player more powerful from the headline numbers alone; check the impedance and sensitivity of your headphones and use listening-level headroom as the practical test.

Best fit

  • Listeners who want a five-inch screen for library navigation.
  • People who need Android for compatible streaming or music-management apps.
  • Owners who already use microSD cards and can accept 47 GB of usable internal storage.
  • Users whose library is mainly PCM and DSD within Sony’s stated limits.

Sony NW-WM1AM2: the storage-and-endurance alternative

More built-in room for a local library

The NW-WM1AM2 has 128 GB of internal storage and a microSD slot. That is the strongest documented capacity advantage in this comparison and reduces the need to move a card between devices. Actual free space is lower than the nominal figure after system software, so confirm the current display of available storage if your library is close to the limit.

With an impressive 12.5 hours of battery life, it ensures uninterrupted listening wherever you go, easily lasting from morning to night. Every listening session is a pleasurable experience without worrying about battery life.
  • The self-developed DAPS digital audio purification system, coupled with a fifth-generation FPGA and custom dual femtosecond crystal oscillators, ensures that both local playback on third-party music apps like FiiO Music and Apple Music, as well as output to an external USB DAC, maintain the original audio sampling rate. This guarantees lossless audio quality for a pristine listening experience.

Battery figures that show the trade-off

Sony estimates about 40 hours in its Walkman app with 96 kHz/24-bit FLAC and about 35 hours with 192 kHz/24-bit FLAC. High-rate DSD is substantially more demanding: Sony lists about 15 hours for 2.8224 MHz DSD on balanced output and about 13 hours for 5.6448 MHz DSD on balanced output. These conditions matter. A result from 96 kHz FLAC should not be presented as the expected runtime for DSD, streaming or a display-heavy Android session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connections and software qualification

The player includes 3.5 mm and balanced outputs, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and supports native DSD. Sony notes that regional software and services can vary, so check whether the streaming applications and account features you need are offered in your market. This is especially important if you are buying an imported unit.

Best fit

  • Listeners who keep a substantial offline library and want 128 GB before adding a card.
  • People who prioritize long local-playback sessions over the newest Android experience.
  • Owners of balanced headphones who want a dedicated Walkman with native DSD playback.
  • Travelers who can accept that DSD and wireless use shorten the headline battery estimate.

Formats: match the player to your actual files

Make a short inventory before choosing. Record the file container, PCM sample rate, bit depth and whether you use DSD. Then compare it with the documented limits:

Library characteristic PD5 NW-ZX707 NW-WM1AM2
PCM up to 384 kHz Explicitly listed, 8–384 kHz FLAC/WAV through 384 kHz listed High-resolution PCM support listed; exact ceiling should be checked for the regional model
Native DSD DSD64, DSD128 and DSD256 listed DSD through 11.2896 MHz listed Native DSD support listed
Unusual or less common formats Verify the current format table Verify the current format table and app behavior Verify the current format table and regional software behavior

If your collection is mostly ordinary CD-quality FLAC, all three documented players exceed that requirement. The choice then shifts to storage, software and headphone matching rather than a larger sample-rate headline.

Headphone and output selection

When 3.5 mm is enough

Efficient in-ear monitors and many portable headphones generally do not need a high-voltage balanced connection. Use the 3.5 mm output when it reaches your normal listening level cleanly, without audible hiss or the volume control operating near its limit.

  • Versatile Ports, High-Performance Output: Supports dual 3.5mm + 4.4mm headphone/LO outputs, equipped with independent line amplification circuits. Also supports SPDIF and USB Audio output, with SPDIF performance rivaling professional digital transports—reducing jitter by 70%.

When balanced is useful

Balanced becomes practical when your headphones have a correctly wired 4.4 mm cable and need more voltage headroom, or when you want to keep the left and right signal paths separated according to the player design. It does not make an incompatible headphone compatible, and it cannot compensate for a poor recording or an ill-fitting earpiece.

How to test safely

  1. Confirm the headphone impedance, sensitivity and cable wiring from the headphone manufacturer.
  2. Start at low volume on the 3.5 mm output.
  3. Increase gradually while listening for adequate headroom, hiss or channel imbalance.
  4. If you use a balanced cable, connect it directly to the matching 4.4 mm socket; avoid improvised adapters.
  5. Compare at matched loudness. A louder signal can be mistaken for a better one.

Storage, Wi-Fi and streaming decisions

The NW-ZX707 is the clearest choice for readers who treat a DAP as a small Android computer. Its five-inch screen and Android 12 make account sign-in, search and app updates familiar, although every service may not support every Android-based player. The NW-WM1AM2 also offers Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but Sony warns that regional software and services can differ. The PD5 has dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.3 with manufacturer-listed codecs, while Astell&Kern’s published specifications do not state its internal storage capacity.

For an offline-first library, capacity and card management matter more than the number of wireless codecs. Buy a reputable microSD card, format it in the player if the manual recommends doing so, keep a second copy of irreplaceable music and leave free space for database updates. Streaming availability, downloads and offline caching should be checked on the exact regional firmware before relying on the player for travel.

Battery estimates: compare like with like

Only compare runtimes measured with the same file type, sample rate, app, output and screen behavior. The Sony figures are particularly clear about this: the NW-ZX707’s approximately 21-hour result is for 192 kHz/24-bit FLAC in the Walkman app, while the NW-WM1AM2’s approximately 40-hour and 35-hour results are for different PCM rates. Its DSD estimates fall to approximately 15 hours and 13 hours on balanced output at the two listed DSD rates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Astell&Kern has not published a PD5 battery estimate. Treat any retailer runtime claim as a separate claim and check the current manufacturer documentation. In practical use, Wi-Fi streaming, Bluetooth transmission, a bright screen, high gain and repeated library scans all consume more power than a settled local-file session with the display off.

This guarantees lossless audio quality for a pristine listening experience.

Portability and daily handling

The PD5’s documented 198 g weight and compact dimensions make it the only model here with a confirmed pocket-friendly physical specification. Sony’s published pages list the NW-ZX707’s five-inch display and the NW-WM1AM2’s feature set, but not dimensions or weight in the information available for these models. Confirm those measurements if the player must fit a particular case, jacket pocket or travel pouch.

Screen size also changes the carrying experience. A larger display helps with search and playlist editing but increases the temptation to keep the screen awake. A smaller, music-first interface can be easier on battery and attention. Choose based on whether the DAP is primarily a transportable library or an Android app device.

Price, warranty and regional checks

What Hi-Fi reported the PD5 at £899, $1049 and AU$1399 in its review published on 7 October 2026. Those are review-time reference prices, not a current worldwide quotation. No current prices for either Sony model are stated in the published specifications; compare local listings rather than converting one market’s price into another.

Before ordering any of the three, verify:

  • Current stock and the seller’s return period.
  • Regional warranty coverage and whether an imported unit can be serviced locally.
  • Firmware version, Android or player-app support and the streaming services available in your country.
  • Included cable, charger and case contents.
  • Whether the listed price is for a new unit, open-box unit or an older regional revision.

Software support is part of the product. A player that meets your file requirements today can become less useful if an essential streaming app stops supporting its Android version or if regional services are unavailable.

Which player should you choose?

Choose the Sony NW-ZX707 when

  • You want a five-inch HD screen and Android 12.
  • You plan to use compatible streaming or library apps over Wi-Fi.
  • 47 GB of available internal storage plus microSD is sufficient.
  • Your high-resolution collection fits Sony’s stated FLAC, WAV and DSD limits.

Choose the Sony NW-WM1AM2 when

  • You want 128 GB of internal storage before adding a microSD card.
  • Long local playback is more important than a phone-like app experience.
  • You use high-resolution FLAC and want Sony’s longer published Walkman-app estimates.
  • You accept shorter runtimes for balanced-output DSD and variable regional services.

Stay with the PD5 when

  • You specifically need its compact, approximately 198 g body.
  • Your headphones benefit from the stated Octa-mode output conditions and you understand that they are no-load figures.
  • You need both 3.5 mm unbalanced and 4.4 mm balanced outputs in this form factor.
  • The current local price, storage arrangement and software support meet your requirements after verification.

Setup checklist for a new DAP

  1. Confirm the regional model. Check warranty, language, radio bands, app availability and firmware support before opening the box.
  2. Update carefully. Charge the player, connect to trusted Wi-Fi and install the manufacturer’s current firmware before importing a large library.
  3. Prepare storage. Insert and format the microSD card only after backing up its contents; keep a second copy of purchased or ripped music.
  4. Check output wiring. Match 3.5 mm or 4.4 mm cables to the correct socket and begin at minimum volume.
  5. Test representative files. Play one CD-quality FLAC, one high-rate PCM file and one DSD file if your library uses them.
  6. Measure your routine. Note actual battery drain with your chosen app, wireless setting, screen timeout and output rather than relying only on the headline estimate.
  7. Set a return deadline. Confirm that the player works with your headphones, memory card and essential apps while the seller’s return window remains open.

What the specifications cannot prove

DAC count, maximum sample rate, Bluetooth version and descriptive sound language do not prove audible superiority. The manufacturer pages establish capabilities and limits; the What Hi-Fi review establishes a review-time price and reviewer experience, not a controlled comparison between all three players. Differences in headphones, recordings, output level and listening environment can dominate a casual comparison.

Use the specifications to eliminate incompatibilities first. Once every candidate supports your files and headphones, choose on storage, interface, battery conditions, physical size, service availability and price. That produces a decision you can verify instead of a sound-quality claim that the published evidence cannot support.

Bottom line

The NW-ZX707 is the practical Android alternative, the NW-WM1AM2 is the capacity-and-endurance alternative, and the PD5 remains compelling for its documented compact design and output flexibility. Recheck current prices, stock, warranty and regional software immediately before purchase, and treat all battery and output figures as condition-specific specifications rather than promises of superior sound.
