For U.S. travelers, the right alternative depends on how often you travel and how you use your phone: compare Google Fi for recurring carrier service, AT&T International Day Pass or Verizon TravelPass if you want to keep your current carrier, and a prepaid travel eSIM for data-first use with a compatible, unlocked phone. Check the exact countries, high-speed data allowance, post-cap speed, calls and texts, and what triggers a charge before you leave.
How to choose an alternative to T-Mobile roaming
Start with your itinerary and likely usage, not the advertised country count. A day pass can be convenient on a short trip, but its charge may recur on every day you use it. A recurring carrier plan can suit frequent travel, while a travel eSIM may work well if you mainly need mobile data and can use an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone.

- Trip length and active-use days: estimate how many days you will actually use roaming. Daily charges can add up over a longer trip.
- Countries and transit: confirm each destination is covered by the specific plan. A provider’s overall destination count does not guarantee every location is included in every plan.
- Data and speed: compare the high-speed allowance and what happens after it is used, rather than treating all included data as equivalent.
- Calls, texts, and your U.S. number: check whether calls and texts are included, billed separately, or unavailable with a data-only package.
- Device and activation: for an eSIM, verify compatibility, unlock status, package validity, and when the plan starts.
- Cruise or flight segments: check separate ship or inflight terms; land roaming allowances do not necessarily apply.
The figures below are providers’ published terms checked October 7, 2026, not independent coverage measurements. Terms, prices, and destination lists can change.

Google Fi: a recurring carrier option for frequent travel
Google Fi says Flexible and Unlimited Premium include data in more than 200 international destinations. Unlimited Premium includes 50 GB of high-speed data in those destinations, followed by data at 256 Kbps. Flexible and Premium include free texts and international calls while abroad at 20 cents per minute. Fi is worth comparing if you travel repeatedly and prefer an ongoing carrier plan to paying for each roaming day. These international features alone do not establish that it is the best or lowest-cost choice: review the full domestic plan price, your account and device fit, the country list, and the allowance for the specific plan you are considering.
AT&T International Day Pass: pay for days you use service
AT&T lists International Day Pass at $12 per day for land use in more than 210 destinations, plus $6 for each additional line used on the same calendar day. When added to an Unlimited Plan, the pass uses the customer’s wireless plan and includes unlimited talk, text, and high-speed data; coverage and speed vary. The daily charge begins when you first use data, send a text, or make or accept a call in an included destination. Check the AT&T International Day Pass terms for current details.

This can be a straightforward option when you already have AT&T and want to use your familiar service on a short trip. Because the fee is tied to use days, compare the expected total for your itinerary rather than focusing only on the per-day price. AT&T lists a separate cruise option at $20 per day, with talk and text and 500 MB at the best available speed before a possible speed reduction on certain ships; do not treat that as the land pass.

Verizon lists TravelPass at $12 per day in more than 210 destinations, and $6 per day in Canada and Mexico. Its international page also lists a $100 International Monthly Plan for one month: 20 GB of high-speed data followed by unlimited data at 3G speeds, unlimited text, and 250 minutes. Verify your account’s eligibility and the destination list before comparing the monthly plan with daily charges. Details are on Verizon’s international travel page.

Verizon says TravelPass is automatically added to Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Welcome, while Unlimited Ultimate includes international data, talk, and text. These plan-specific terms can change the comparison, so check what your own line includes. Verizon also lists cruise and participating-flight options separately from land roaming.
Travel eSIM: a data-first alternative
Airalo offers local, regional, and global eSIM plans for more than 200 locations. The package’s selected validity period and data consumption determine how long it lasts. For Android setup, Airalo says the phone must support eSIM, be unlocked, and have a good network or Wi-Fi connection. Confirm the selected package’s coverage, activation conditions, data allowance, and expiry in Airalo’s plan listings and its setup help.

An eSIM can be a useful alternative if you mainly need data and can keep your usual line for other purposes. Do not assume a particular package includes a U.S. phone number, voice calls, SMS, or hotspot use; those features depend on the package. It may cost less than carrier roaming for some itineraries, but there is no universal price winner: compare the package cost and allowance with the total roaming charges your planned use would trigger.
When T-Mobile may still be the better fit
Switching providers is not automatically necessary. T-Mobile’s current page lists up to 5 GB of high-speed data in more than 215 countries and destinations on Experience More, and up to 15 GB on Experience Beyond, followed by unlimited data at up to 256 Kbps. Its listed International Passes are $10 for one day with 2 GB, $50 for ten days with 15 GB, and $75 for thirty days with 30 GB; unlimited calls are included on the pass. T-Mobile says calls on qualifying plans are generally $0.50 per minute in included destinations. Check T-Mobile’s international roaming terms for plan qualifications and exclusions.

T-Mobile cautions that standard included roaming is not for extended international use. Its terms state: “Not for extended international use; you must reside in the US and primary usage must occur on our network.” If you already have an eligible T-Mobile plan, compare its included allowance or pass with the alternatives before changing service.
Quick Recap
A practical way to compare your trip
- List every country and segment. Include stops between destinations, cruises, and flights, then confirm each provider’s coverage for those locations and services.
- Estimate use days and data. Count the days you expect to trigger roaming and estimate data needs. Compare a daily pass’s likely total against a recurring plan or eSIM package.
- Check the speed after the allowance. Note whether data slows to a specified rate, switches to a lower speed tier, or has another limitation.
- Decide how you will handle calls and texts. Confirm whether you can receive calls or texts on your U.S. number and what calls cost; for an eSIM, check whether voice and SMS are included at all.
- Confirm the billing and activation trigger. For AT&T, first use of data, a sent text, or a made or accepted call in an included destination starts the daily charge. For an eSIM, check the package’s activation instructions and validity period.
- Verify current terms before departure. Review the provider’s destination list, account and device eligibility, and any separate cruise or inflight plan terms.
