Moonlight paired with Sunshine is the best Steam Remote Play alternative for most enthusiasts because it supports non-Steam games, gives you control over the host, and runs on a wide range of clients. Parsec is the better choice when remote internet access, desktop sharing, or collaboration matters more than a self-hosted setup. Steam Link remains the simplest option when your games are already in Steam and your target device supports the app.
The right choice depends on where you play, which launchers you use, your host PC’s GPU and operating system, and the quality of the connection between host and client. The comparisons below separate in-home streaming from outside-home access so you can choose without guessing.

Steam Link and Steam Remote Play: the easiest Steam-first route
Steam Link is the client experience for streaming a Steam library to another screen. Valve describes real-time video and audio encoding on the host, with input sent back over a low-latency protocol. It is therefore the natural first choice when your games are already installed in Steam and you want a phone, television, tablet, computer or headset to act as the display.

Where Steam Link fits best
- Your games are purchased or launched through Steam.
- You want the shortest path from installation to play.
- Your client is one of Valve’s documented platforms: iPhone or iPad, Apple TV, Android, Fire TV, Raspberry Pi, Windows, Linux, macOS or Meta Quest.
- You prefer Valve’s integrated library and pairing flow instead of maintaining a separate host service.
Steam Link is less attractive when a title starts in another launcher, when you need a host that is not centered on Steam, or when you want fine-grained control over a self-hosted streaming stack. In those cases, Moonlight with Sunshine or Parsec avoids making Steam the organizing layer.

Basic Steam Link setup
- On the gaming PC, open the Steam desktop client and go to Settings > Remote Play. Turn on Remote Play.
- Install Steam Link on the target device. The supported client families include mobile devices, televisions, computers, Raspberry Pi and Meta Quest.
- Put the host and client on the same network for the initial in-home setup, then select the gaming PC from the Steam Link pairing screen.
- Enter the pairing code shown on the client in Steam when prompted, and launch a game from the displayed Steam library.
- Connect the controller to the client device when possible. Steam Link and Valve’s client documentation cover controller input as part of the streaming experience.
Valve’s key network guidance is unambiguous: Wired network strongly recommended.
Connect the gaming PC to the router by Ethernet first. If the client must use Wi-Fi, keep it close to the access point and avoid competing traffic while playing.
Moonlight plus Sunshine: the flexible self-hosted alternative
Moonlight is the client; Sunshine is the host software that captures and encodes the game on your PC. Using both gives you a streaming path that is independent of the Steam library. You can expose games from other launchers and retain control over which computer provides the stream.
Sunshine host requirements
Moonlight’s setup guidance lists Sunshine support for modern AMD, NVIDIA and Intel GPUs on Windows 10 and Windows 11. macOS 12 or later is listed as experimental, and current Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora releases are supported. “Current” is intentionally broad here: the cited guide does not name a single minimum distribution version, so check the Sunshine documentation for the release you run.

| macOS 12 or later | Modern compatible hardware | Experimental |
| Current Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora releases | Modern compatible AMD, NVIDIA or Intel GPUs | Supported releases are described as current; a specific version is not stated |
Moonlight’s FAQ says newer features require Sunshine because NVIDIA GeForce Experience is out of support. A new installation should therefore use Sunshine rather than building around the older GeForce Experience host path.

Moonlight client coverage
Official Moonlight clients are listed for Windows, macOS, Linux, Raspberry Pi 4, Steam Link hardware, Android, Amazon Fire tablets and TVs, iOS, Apple TV and ChromeOS. That makes Moonlight particularly useful when the same host must serve several kinds of screen, including a Linux laptop and a television.
Setting up Moonlight and Sunshine
- Install Sunshine on the gaming PC, choosing the build appropriate for Windows, macOS or your Linux distribution.
- Start Sunshine and complete its host configuration. Keep the host PC awake and make sure the game or launcher you want to use is available to the host.
- Install Moonlight on the client device. Select the gaming PC when it appears on the local network.
- Pair the client using the code displayed by Moonlight and confirmed on the Sunshine host.
- Choose a listed game or desktop session, connect your controller to the client, and verify that video, audio and input respond before moving the setup outside your home.
The exact Sunshine menus and package names differ by operating system, so do not treat a Windows instruction as a Linux instruction. The important division of labor is constant: Sunshine runs on the gaming PC, while Moonlight runs on the screen or device receiving the stream.
Streaming outside the home with Moonlight
The Moonlight setup material records 5 Mbps or higher upload for streaming outside the home in the documented GeForce Experience path. That is a minimum cited for that path, not a guarantee of a sharp or lag-free session under every resolution, frame rate or network condition. Your home connection must upload the stream from the gaming PC, while the remote client must download it.

Why choose Moonlight, and what you give up
- Advantages: broad client coverage, support for non-Steam games, host choice across major GPU vendors, and control over the streaming computer.
- Trade-offs: you install and maintain a host service, pair clients yourself, and may need additional networking work for outside-home play.
- Important limitation: real-time streams cannot safely build a large buffer. Moonlight’s FAQ explains that buffering would introduce significant latency, so a momentary connection problem is felt immediately rather than hidden several seconds later.
Parsec: strongest for internet access and shared desktops
Parsec is designed for streaming game footage or a desktop session over the internet. Its documentation emphasizes ultra-low-latency remote access, supports AMD as well as NVIDIA GPUs, and positions the service for both gaming and collaboration. It is a practical fit when the remote computer is not on your home network or when another person needs to view or interact with the desktop.
Parsec’s published 1080p60 network targets
| Measure | Minimum listed by Parsec | Recommended by Parsec | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Host upload | 10 Mbps | 30 Mbps | 1080p at 60 frames per second |
| Client download | 10 Mbps | 30 Mbps | 1080p at 60 frames per second |
| Ping to a same-city test server | Below 30 ms | Below 15 ms | Measured to the specified test server, not to every internet destination |
| Local link | 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet | Ethernet preferred where practical | Parsec’s 1080p60 guidance |
These are connection targets, not a promise that every game will feel identical to local play. The path includes the host’s upload, the internet route, the client’s download and the return path carrying input. A fast broadband plan can still perform poorly if latency is high or the route is unstable.
Typical Parsec workflow
- Install the Parsec host application on the gaming PC and the client application on the remote device.
- Enable hosting on the gaming PC and sign in according to the current Parsec client prompts.
- Connect from the client, select the available host session, and test the desktop before starting a demanding game.
- Attach the controller or use keyboard and mouse input on the client, then verify that the game recognizes the device.
- For 1080p60, check that both directions meet Parsec’s 10 Mbps minimum and preferably its 30 Mbps recommendation, and measure ping to a same-city test server.
Parsec’s internet orientation is its main advantage over a Steam-only workflow. Its main risk is dependence on the complete end-to-end route: the host’s upload, the remote client’s download, and the latency between locations. It is also less of a single-purpose television interface than Steam Link, so the experience is closer to controlling a remote desktop that happens to be running a game.
Network requirements that determine whether any option feels good
Bandwidth is only one part of the connection
Use the numbers as thresholds for the stated conditions, not universal presets. Moonlight’s 5 Mbps figure applies to the documented outside-home GeForce Experience path. Parsec’s 10 Mbps minimum and 30 Mbps recommendation apply to 1080p60. Neither figure establishes a guaranteed requirement for every resolution, frame rate, game or client.

Upload matters at the gaming PC because the host is sending the encoded video and audio. Download matters at the client because it receives that stream. Input travels in the opposite direction, so a saturated upload or download can make controls feel late even when the picture remains visible.
Use a wired host connection first
For Steam Link, Valve strongly recommends a wired network. Parsec likewise recommends Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi for its 1080p60 guidance. The most dependable arrangement is Ethernet from the gaming PC to the router, with Ethernet at the client when convenient. If the client must be wireless, use a clean 5 GHz connection rather than placing the host behind a weak wireless hop.
Remove common sources of contention
Parsec advises against background transfers, Wi-Fi boosters, Ethernet-over-powerline devices and mesh systems in its 1080p60 guidance. Those devices are not automatically unusable, but they add variables that make a real-time stream harder to stabilize. Pause cloud synchronization, downloads and video uploads while diagnosing a session.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why buffering is not a cure for latency
A video player can download several seconds before showing them; an interactive game cannot do that without making controls several seconds late. Moonlight’s FAQ states that real-time streaming apps cannot buffer data because doing so would introduce significant latency. The practical response to stutter is to improve the path or reduce the stream’s demands, not to expect a hidden reserve of video to smooth every interruption.

Choose by use case
My library is almost entirely Steam
Start with Steam Link. It offers the shortest setup and the broadest clearly documented living-room and mobile coverage. Wire the host to the router, pair the client, and move to another option only if you need non-Steam launchers or a host architecture outside Steam.
I use several launchers or want a self-hosted solution
Choose Moonlight with Sunshine. Sunshine supports modern AMD, NVIDIA and Intel GPUs on Windows 10/11 and current Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora releases, while Moonlight clients span computers, phones, televisions, Apple TV, ChromeOS and more. Expect more setup work than Steam Link, especially for outside-home access.
Recommended Free Tools
I regularly connect from another location
Choose Parsec when internet remote access is the priority and you can meet its connection targets. Plan for at least 10 Mbps in both directions for 1080p60, preferably 30 Mbps, and ping below 30 ms to a same-city test server, with below 15 ms recommended.
I need a television, phone or tablet client
Steam Link and Moonlight both document extensive television and mobile support. Steam Link includes iPhone/iPad, Apple TV, Android and Fire TV; Moonlight lists Android, iOS, Apple TV and Amazon Fire tablets/TVs. Select between them based on whether Steam integration or non-Steam flexibility matters more.
Troubleshooting checklist
Video stutters or freezes
- Connect the gaming PC to the router with Ethernet.
- Move a wireless client to a clean 5 GHz connection.
- Pause downloads, cloud synchronization and other background transfers.
- If using Parsec, avoid Wi-Fi boosters, powerline Ethernet and mesh systems while testing the 1080p60 path.
- Check that the host upload and client download meet the figures for your chosen software and target quality.
Controls feel delayed
- Measure ping to a nearby or same-city test server; Parsec’s published targets are below 30 ms minimum and below 15 ms recommended.
- Remove congestion rather than relying on buffering. Interactive streams cannot hide delay without making input later.
- Prefer a wired host and keep the client close to the 5 GHz access point if Ethernet is not possible.
The client cannot find the PC
- For Steam Link and Moonlight, confirm that the host application is running and that the devices are on the same network for the initial pairing.
- For Moonlight, verify that Sunshine—not the unsupported GeForce Experience host path—is installed and running.
- For outside-home sessions, follow the current host application’s remote-access and firewall requirements; an in-home pairing does not prove that an internet route is configured.
The game is not in the library
Steam Link is organized around the Steam library. A non-Steam launcher or desktop workflow is a better match for Moonlight with Sunshine or Parsec, both of which are designed to stream beyond a strictly Steam-only catalog.
Bottom line
Use Steam Link for the simplest Steam-centered experience, Moonlight plus Sunshine for flexible self-hosted streaming and non-Steam games, and Parsec for internet remote access and shared desktop sessions. Whichever you choose, wire the gaming PC to the router first, meet the relevant upload, download and ping targets, and treat network stability as a core part of the setup rather than an afterthought.
