Frontier is the closest like-for-like alternative to Spirit’s ultra-low-cost model, but it is not automatically the cheapest. Avelo and Allegiant can work better on particular nonstop routes, while Southwest may compete on total price when baggage is important. Compare the same dates, airports, schedule, and bags across airlines; the lowest advertised fare may not be the least expensive trip.
Which airlines are worth comparing?
Start with the route you need, then check the final price for your travel dates. These airlines differ in where they fly, which airports they use, and what their fares include. A nationwide ranking cannot tell you which one is cheapest for a specific itinerary.

| Airline | Why it may fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Frontier | Closest comparison to Spirit’s low-base-fare structure. Frontier said it had restored service on more than 100 routes formerly flown by Spirit in its May 2026 announcement. | Current route and frequency, plus the total after bags, seats, and any bundle. |
| Avelo | May offer an alternative route, sometimes through a different airport. Its published schedule extended through April 20, 2027. | Airport location, operating days, live schedule, and ground-transport cost. |
| Allegiant | Can be a good fit for leisure trips where it operates a nonstop flight. | Whether the nonstop runs on your dates, how often it operates, and the cost of bags. |
| Southwest | Worth comparing when carry-on or checked baggage affects the total cost. | Fare type, applicable baggage rules, and the exact ticketing or change date. |
| Breeze | A possible low-fare option on routes it serves. | Live schedule and fare availability; displayed deals may no longer be available, and optional baggage charges may apply. |
| Major airlines and JetBlue | Can offer lower-priced seats on some routes, so they should not be excluded based on brand category alone. | Exact fare family, airports, schedule, baggage, and change terms. |
How to choose the best substitute for your route
Frontier: closest to Spirit’s fare structure
Frontier is the most natural first comparison if you want a similar low-base-fare approach. Its May 2026 announcement listed more than 100 routes formerly flown by Spirit, including Atlanta–Orlando and Atlanta–Fort Lauderdale. That is a dated route snapshot, not a guarantee of service now; confirm the route and flight times for your dates. Frontier’s fare information lists one personal item as included and directs passengers to add seats and bags through optional choices or bundles. Frontier’s route announcement and fare-inclusion information are useful starting points.

Avelo: check the airport as carefully as the airfare
Avelo may serve a trip through an airport that is not the one you would ordinarily choose. Examples in its route alternatives include Wilmington, Delaware (ILG), Lakeland, Florida (LAL), and Tweed-New Haven (HVN). Compare the complete journey: driving time, parking, transit, and any transfer needed at both ends. Avelo announced a schedule available for booking through April 20, 2027, but schedules can change; verify your exact route and date. See Avelo’s route alternatives and its schedule announcement.

Allegiant: useful when its leisure route lines up
Allegiant describes nonstop service as a hallmark of its leisure-focused model. That can make it attractive when the route and operating day fit, but a nonstop is useful only if it runs when you need to travel. Its announced new-route fares were introductory promotions, not current quotes. Check current availability and route-specific fees in the booking flow. Allegiant’s route announcement gives examples of its network expansion.
Southwest: compare the fare rules, not just the base price
Southwest can be competitive when baggage is part of your trip budget, but its checked-bag treatment depends on fare and travel eligibility. For U.S. mainland travel booked and ticketed or changed on or after April 9, 2026, its fee page lists the first and second checked bags at $45 and $55, respectively, for Basic, Choice, and Choice Preferred fares; Choice Extra includes two checked bags. Verify the applicable terms for your ticket directly on Southwest’s optional travel charges page.

Breeze notes that displayed fares may no longer be available and that optional baggage charges may apply. Check its current flight deals, then compare any result against major airlines and JetBlue using the same trip details.

One concrete example of why dimensions matter: Allegiant lists a free personal item with a maximum size of 8 × 14 × 18 inches, while a carry-on is separately charged. Allegiant’s optional-services and fees page lists its current stated terms.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Domestic Airfare Consumer Report, Fourth Quarter 2025, published in 2026, reports ticket fares that include taxes and mandatory airline fees but exclude optional charges such as baggage and seat upgrades. The report also says its survey expanded in July 2025 to cover all domestic certificated and commuter carriers using a 40% sample, with new reporting rules. Its figures offer market context, not an all-in quote for your itinerary. Read the DOT report with those limits in mind.
