If you want publicly traded exposure to paints and coatings without buying Sherwin-Williams, start with PPG Industries (NYSE: PPG), RPM International (NYSE: RPM), Axalta Coating Systems (NYSE: AXTA), AkzoNobel (Euronext Amsterdam: AKZA), and Nippon Paint Holdings (Tokyo: 4612). They are not interchangeable: each has a different mix of architectural paint, automotive, aerospace, industrial, marine, protective, or specialty coatings.
The most useful choice depends on the exposure you want, the company’s distribution model, geographic risk, transaction status, and comparable financial results. There is no defensible “best” alternative without first defining those criteria.

What you are actually comparing with Sherwin-Williams
Sherwin-Williams is more than a paint manufacturer. It develops, manufactures, distributes, and sells paints, coatings, and related products to professional, industrial, commercial, and retail customers. Its company-branded products are sold exclusively through more than 4,900 company-operated stores and facilities. Other brands use mass merchandisers, home centers, dealers, hardware stores, and distributors.

Its reported brands include Valspar, HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams, Dutch Boy, Krylon, Minwax, Thompson’s Water Seal, and Cabot. The company reported $23.6 billion in net sales for the year ended December 31, 2025, a 6.9% five-year adjusted EPS compound annual growth rate, 47 consecutive annual dividend increases, and more than 50 acquisitions since 2000. Those are company-presented historical figures, not a forecast or a valuation measure.

An alternative can resemble Sherwin-Williams in one segment while being very different in another. A company focused on automotive refinish coatings is not a substitute for a retailer and contractor-oriented architectural-paint business. A global company listed outside the United States adds currency, tax, custody, and market-access considerations. Compare the underlying exposure rather than relying on the word “paint” in a company description.

PPG Industries: the broadest documented substitute
PPG is the clearest alternative when you want a large, diversified coatings company rather than a narrow specialty operator. Its 2025 Form 10-K divides its reported businesses between architectural coatings and performance coatings.
Architectural and decorative exposure
PPG’s architectural products include paints, wood stains, adhesives, sealants, and finishes. This gives it a direct connection to the decorative and building-products side of the market that many investors associate with Sherwin-Williams.
Performance-coatings exposure
Its performance lines include aerospace, automotive refinish, protective and marine, and traffic solutions, alongside separate industrial-coatings activity. Those businesses expose shareholders to transportation production, aircraft maintenance and manufacturing, infrastructure, marine assets, industrial equipment, and commercial construction rather than only residential repainting.
Competitive overlap
PPG’s filing lists Sherwin-Williams as a competitor in both architectural and performance coatings. It also names Axalta, RPM, Nippon Paint, AkzoNobel, and other operators in the relevant competitive sets. Because the competitor list changes by segment, it should not be read as proof that every company has the same product or customer mix.
Historical scale and capital returns
PPG reported $15.9 billion in 2025 net sales. It said it returned $1.4 billion to shareholders during 2025, consisting of approximately $630 million in dividends and $790 million in share repurchases. The company also reported 126 years of uninterrupted annual dividends and 54 consecutive years of dividend increases.
These figures describe 2025 results and company history. They do not establish that PPG is cheaper, safer, or likely to outperform Sherwin-Williams. For an investment decision, compare the latest same-period organic growth, operating margins, free cash flow, leverage, and valuation multiples.

RPM International: a competitor whose mix requires closer checking
RPM is a publicly traded coatings company named in both PPG’s 2025 Form 10-K and Axalta’s May 15, 2026 transaction communication as a relevant competitor. That supports including RPM in a peer screen, but the available information does not provide a directly comparable current breakdown of its architectural, industrial, automotive, protective, or specialty exposure.
That limitation matters. A company can have meaningful coatings revenue while serving different customers, using different channels, and carrying different cyclicality from Sherwin-Williams. Before buying RPM as a substitute, read its latest annual and quarterly reports for:
- Revenue by operating segment and product category
- Construction, industrial, maintenance, and specialty end-market exposure
- North American versus international sales and currency sensitivity
- Acquisition activity, integration costs, and divestitures
- Operating margins, cash conversion, debt maturities, and capital-allocation policy
RPM may be appropriate for an investor seeking a diversified coatings peer, but the evidence here does not support assigning it a precise percentage of architectural or decorative-paint exposure.
Axalta Coating Systems: a coatings-focused and transaction-sensitive choice
Axalta is useful when the objective is focused exposure to coatings rather than a store-based architectural-paint network. Its May 15, 2026 SEC-filed communication identifies Sherwin-Williams, PPG, and RPM among its key global competitors in paints and coatings.

Why the business profile differs
Axalta’s relevance is strongest in coatings-focused comparisons, including automotive and industrial applications. That does not make it a one-for-one replacement for Sherwin-Williams’ company-operated stores, contractor relationships, and broad retail presence.
The AkzoNobel transaction issue
The same May 2026 filing describes a proposed merger of equals between Axalta and AkzoNobel and gives an end-of-2026 closing target in its forward-looking transaction materials. A target date is not evidence that the transaction closed. The status can affect the combined company’s share count, debt, geographic mix, management structure, product portfolio, and valuation.
Check whether the transaction is announced, signed, approved, completed, amended, or terminated immediately before making a decision. Do not combine Axalta and AkzoNobel historical results as though they were already one company.

AkzoNobel: international exposure with corporate-action uncertainty
AkzoNobel is an international coatings peer listed on Euronext Amsterdam under AKZA. PPG’s 2025 filing places AkzoNobel among relevant global competitors, while the Axalta filing discusses the proposed combination described above.

What makes it different
An Amsterdam listing means that trading hours, currency conversion, withholding taxes, settlement, custody, and account access may differ from a U.S.-listed stock. Its revenue and costs also reflect an international geographic mix that should be analyzed separately from a primarily domestic comparison.
How to evaluate it
Use AkzoNobel’s latest annual report to identify current sales by region and end market, reportable segments, organic growth, adjusted and statutory margins, net debt, pension obligations, and shareholder distributions. Verify the current listing details and any transaction-related disclosures. The available evidence does not establish a current valuation or a definitive investment ranking.
Nippon Paint Holdings: a global peer, not a directly comparable U.S. listing
Nippon Paint Holdings, traded in Tokyo under 4612, is named by PPG as a global competitor. That is enough to include it in an international paint-and-coatings watchlist, but not enough to assume that it offers the same investor experience or business mix as Sherwin-Williams.
The material available here does not provide comparable segment-level financial data, current valuation, U.S. investor access, currency treatment, or share-class information for Nippon Paint. Confirm:

Architectural and decorative paint
Look for paints, stains, sealants, and finishes sold to contractors, professional applicators, retailers, and homeowners. Sherwin-Williams and PPG both have documented architectural exposure. For RPM, Axalta, AkzoNobel, and Nippon Paint, confirm the current contribution from these categories in each company’s own filings before treating them as direct substitutes.
Automotive OEM and refinish
Automotive OEM coatings follow vehicle production and model launches. Refinish demand is linked more closely to the installed vehicle fleet, collision frequency, repair activity, and insurer practices. PPG explicitly reports automotive refinish exposure, and Axalta is a coatings-focused peer, but the two should still be compared using current segment results rather than labels alone.
Aerospace
Aerospace coatings can be influenced by aircraft production, airline maintenance, fleet utilization, and certification requirements. PPG identifies aerospace within its performance-coatings activities. A larger aerospace share can make a company’s cycle and margins differ from a primarily architectural-paint producer.
Marine, protective, industrial, and traffic coatings
Protective and marine coatings serve infrastructure, energy, shipping, bridges, water treatment, and industrial assets. Traffic solutions are tied to road markings and public infrastructure. PPG identifies these areas separately, demonstrating why “coatings” is too broad a category for a simple ranking.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Distribution is an investment variable
Sherwin-Williams’ more than 4,900 company-operated stores and facilities are a defining feature of its model. Stores can support product availability, technical service, contractor relationships, pricing control, and customer data, but they also create fixed operating costs and real-estate requirements.
Other companies may rely more heavily on independent dealers, distributors, home centers, mass merchants, direct industrial relationships, or automotive-repair networks. Those channels can produce different sales costs, bargaining power, inventory arrangements, and exposure to private-label competition.

Best Value
Geography, currency, and listing access
The sources do not provide a directly comparable geographic-revenue table for all five alternatives. Do not infer domestic or international exposure from a company’s headquarters or listing alone.
For each candidate, collect the latest reported revenue by region, major-currency sensitivity, local manufacturing footprint, regulatory exposure, and tax structure. U.S.-listed PPG, RPM, and Axalta are operationally international even though their shares trade in New York. AkzoNobel and Nippon Paint add exchange-rate and market-access considerations because their primary listings are outside the United States.
Currency diversification can reduce dependence on one economy, but it can also make reported revenue and earnings move differently from local demand. Compare results on a consistent basis, and distinguish reported growth from constant-currency or organic growth.

Use comparable financial data before calling one “best”
The available figures are not a current valuation comparison. Sherwin-Williams’ $23.6 billion 2025 net sales and PPG’s $15.9 billion 2025 net sales are historical issuer-reported numbers from different companies; revenue size alone does not determine shareholder returns.
Build a same-period worksheet containing:
- Net sales and organic sales growth
- Gross and operating margins, with the company’s definitions recorded
- Operating cash flow and free cash flow
- Net debt, pension liabilities, and interest expense
- Capital expenditures and acquisition spending
- Dividend yield, payout ratio, and repurchase activity
- Forward and trailing price-to-earnings, enterprise-value-to-EBITDA, and free-cash-flow multiples
- Management guidance and the assumptions behind it
Do not mix a promotional price, one-time allowance, or forecast with a recurring financial metric. Confirm the reporting period, currency, accounting basis, and whether an amount is statutory, adjusted, organic, or constant-currency.
Corporate actions can change the comparison
Transaction status deserves its own line in any spreadsheet. The proposed Axalta-AkzoNobel combination was described in May 2026 as a merger of equals with a target closing at the end of 2026. That target was contingent and should not be presented as a completed transaction.
A 2026 Sherwin-Williams release also documented that Sherwin-Williams’ and Nippon Paint Group’s pursuit of AkzoNobel had ended. The release discussed risks associated with the earlier proposal and the existing Axalta-AkzoNobel merger agreement. Check the most recent regulatory filings and company announcements before publication or investment action because the transaction may have closed, changed, or been terminated since those disclosures.
A practical screening process
- Define the exposure. Decide whether you want architectural paint, automotive refinish, aerospace, marine and protective coatings, industrial products, global diversification, dividend history, or a combination.
- Choose the closest candidates. Start with PPG for broad documented exposure; add RPM, Axalta, AkzoNobel, or Nippon Paint when their specific end markets or geography match your objective.
- Read the latest filings. Confirm segment definitions, regional sales, distribution channels, debt, cash flow, and management guidance for the same reporting period.
- Check transaction status. For Axalta and AkzoNobel, determine whether the proposed combination is pending, completed, amended, or no longer proceeding.
- Normalize the numbers. Convert currencies consistently and distinguish reported, adjusted, organic, and constant-currency results.
- Compare valuation and risk. Use current market prices and consensus or company guidance only after verifying the date. Examine leverage, cyclicality, raw-material sensitivity, customer concentration, and acquisition dependence.
- Apply portfolio limits. A coatings company can still be exposed to construction, vehicle production, industrial capital spending, and foreign exchange. Size the position according to those risks rather than assuming “paint” means defensive.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling every coatings company a Sherwin-Williams substitute. Segment exposure and customer channels differ materially.
- Ranking stocks without a valuation date. Historical sales and dividend records do not tell you what investors are paying today.
- Treating a proposed merger as closed. The Axalta-AkzoNobel end-of-2026 target was a forward-looking transaction objective.
- Ignoring listing mechanics. AkzoNobel and Nippon Paint require attention to currency, taxes, settlement, and share access.
- Comparing adjusted figures without definitions. Adjusted EPS, organic sales, and free cash flow can be calculated differently across issuers.
- Assuming dividends guarantee safety. PPG’s and Sherwin-Williams’ long dividend histories are historical records, not promises about future returns.
- Using paint products as stock exposure. Buying paint, tools, or supplies does not create ownership of a paint-company security.
Which alternative fits which investor objective?
| Objective | Logical starting point | Why | What to verify next |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broad architectural and performance-coatings exposure | PPG | Its filing documents both architectural and performance businesses | Latest segment growth, margins, debt, valuation, and geographic mix |
| Coatings-focused industrial or automotive exposure | Axalta | It is identified as a key global coatings competitor | Automotive versus industrial mix and the current AkzoNobel transaction status |
| Diversified coatings peer with a different operating mix | RPM | It is named in relevant competitor sets | Current segment weights, cash flow, leverage, and acquisition integration |
| International coatings exposure through a European listing | AkzoNobel | It is a global competitor listed in Amsterdam | Listing details, currency, regional revenue, valuation, and transaction status |
| International exposure through a Japanese listing | Nippon Paint Holdings | It is named as a global competitor by PPG | Share class, broker access, taxes, currency, and comparable segment data |
Bottom line for a Sherwin-Williams stock search
PPG is the most fully documented broad alternative in the available company materials because it combines architectural and performance coatings and reports substantial 2025 scale and capital returns. Axalta is more useful for a coatings-focused comparison, but its proposed combination with AkzoNobel makes transaction status essential. RPM belongs on a serious peer list, while AkzoNobel and Nippon Paint add international alternatives with different listing and currency considerations.
None is automatically the best investment. Use the latest filings and market data to match end-market exposure, distribution, geography, financial quality, valuation, and corporate-action risk to your own criteria.
