Scrut Automation MCP sits outside a strict read-only shortlist because it can upload a file or attach a link to an existing evidence item. Scytale itself remains a useful baseline: its phase-one MCP, announced October 13, 2026, exposes read-only tools for frameworks, audits, controls, monitoring, policies, risks, tasks, and vendors.

What “read-only” should mean for an MCP connection
Model Context Protocol (MCP) lets an AI client call tools exposed by another service. In a compliance platform, those tools may retrieve controls, audit status, evidence, risks, policies, vendors, or tasks. The important distinction is whether the MCP server merely returns data or can also invoke operations that alter the source system.
Strict read-only server
A strict read-only server exposes retrieval operations only. The connection cannot create, edit, upload, attach, approve, delete, or otherwise mutate a record. LogicGate Risk Cloud MCP and Strike Graph MCP are the strongest matches for this definition in the available comparison.
Read-only connection on a broader server
A platform such as Drata or Vanta may let an administrator configure one connection with read-only scopes. That can be appropriate, but it is a configuration claim rather than a property of the whole server. A later scope change, role change, newly released tool, or misconfigured token could expand the effective permissions. Treat the connection as safe only after checking the current tool list and testing that write and delete operations are unavailable.
Limited evidence writes
Some integrations deliberately permit a narrow write action. Scrut Automation MCP can upload a file or attach a link to an existing evidence item, while not editing or deleting records. This is useful for an evidence-ingestion workflow, but it fails an absolute “the AI cannot change anything” requirement.
Scytale MCP as the baseline
Scytale announced MCP on October 13, 2026. Its first phase exposes frameworks, audits, controls, monitoring, policies, risks, tasks, and vendors through read-only tools. Scytale describes the initial release as “Read-only to start. Phase 1 makes no changes to underlying data.”
Authentication and tenant scope
Scytale describes OAuth authentication scoped to a single company. That tenant boundary matters: an AI client authorized for one company should not automatically obtain records from another company. Before authorizing any alternative, confirm the equivalent organization or workspace boundary and whether the token can be reused across tenants.

Logging and hosting
Scytale says every call is audit logged and that hosting is regional. It also says the service works with MCP-compliant clients including Claude, Claude Code, Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, and an internal agent. The client list describes compatibility, not an assurance that every client handles retention, training, or administrator controls in the same way.

The table describes the documented comparison, not a permanent feature guarantee. MCP tool inventories and plan entitlements can change, so check the vendor’s current documentation and your tenant’s actual configuration before connecting production data.
1. LogicGate Risk Cloud MCP: closest strict read-only match
LogicGate is the first alternative to evaluate when the central requirement is that the AI must not mutate compliance data. The comparison classifies its MCP server as read-only for every connection, rather than merely offering a read-only profile on a server with general write tools.
How access is controlled
The documented setup limits access to certain roles and requires an administrator to turn MCP on. That gives the organization two checkpoints: the administrator must explicitly enable the integration, and the connecting identity must hold an eligible role. A single connection can be revoked without disabling every user’s access.

The comparison describes hosted deployment through OAuth or an API key and lists Claude, Claude Code, Microsoft Copilot Studio, ChatGPT, and Cursor as supported clients. “Hosted” means the vendor operates the MCP endpoint; it does not mean the AI client receives no compliance data. Evaluate the complete path from Risk Cloud to the MCP endpoint to the selected client.

Cost and entitlement qualification
The comparison says MCP is included with Risk Cloud API access at no extra cost and requires an MCP Access role entitlement. These are setup details that should be rechecked with LogicGate because plan packaging and role names can change.
Best use case
- Security, audit, or compliance teams that want natural-language retrieval without mutation tools.
- Organizations already using Risk Cloud API access and able to assign the required role.
- Teams that need per-connection revocation rather than a global shutdown.
2. Strike Graph MCP: another strict read-only option
Strike Graph is the other clearly documented strict read-only alternative. The comparative review classifies its server as read-only and says access is limited to certain roles. The vendor must enable access, adding an administrative gate before an AI client can connect.
Connection model
Hosted OAuth access is described for Claude, ChatGPT, and other MCP clients. One connection can be revoked, allowing an administrator to disable an individual user’s integration without turning off the service for everyone.
Plan qualification
The comparison associates MCP with Scale and Enterprise plans or AI Consumption credits. Treat that as an eligibility lead, not a universal price statement: confirm which plan, region, contract, and credit model apply to your tenant.
Best use case
- Teams that want a vendor-enabled, role-limited, read-only connection.
- Organizations whose users work primarily in Claude, ChatGPT, or another compatible MCP client.
- Security programs that require individual connection revocation.
3. Drata MCP: read-only mode on a broader server
Drata is a reasonable candidate when broad platform coverage matters and the organization can enforce a tightly scoped connection. Its server supports read, write, and delete actions, while the comparison says a connection can be made read-only.
Why the distinction matters
“Read-only connection” does not prove that the server has no mutation tools. Drata combines administrator-selected scopes with the connecting user’s role. A user with a powerful role could therefore have more effective access than intended if scopes are too broad, and a later configuration change could alter the boundary.

Safe evaluation sequence
- List every scope selected by the administrator and remove any scope that is not required for the intended questions.
- Inspect the connecting user’s role and confirm that it cannot create, edit, upload, approve, or delete the records in scope.
- Review the MCP tool list and identify every write or delete operation exposed by the server.
- Use a non-production tenant or test records to verify that mutation tools are unavailable or rejected.
- Record who approved the configuration and how to revoke the single connection.
Do not describe Drata as an absolute read-only replacement unless those checks establish that outcome for your tenant.

4. Vanta MCP: broad coverage with preview status
Vanta documents a read-only connection capability, but its MCP server supports read, write, and delete actions. The comparison labels the integration public preview or beta and says returned data depends on enabled modules.
What the module dependency means
Two Vanta tenants may expose different data because their modules differ. Before authorizing an AI client, define the exact objects the user needs—such as controls, evidence, risks, or tasks—and verify that only those modules are enabled for the connection.
Preview-risk controls
Preview software can change its tool inventory, permission behavior, or availability. Keep the connection limited to non-production or low-sensitivity data until your team has documented the current behavior. Recheck the configuration after product updates and before relying on it for an audit workflow.
5. Scrut Automation MCP: appropriate only for limited evidence writes
Scrut’s documented server can upload a file or attach a link to an existing evidence item. It does not edit or delete records, and actions are logged like the user’s own actions. However, the AI client itself is not recorded in that audit trail according to the comparison.

Use this model when the workflow intentionally includes evidence collection—for example, letting an assistant attach a supplied artifact to an existing evidence item—while prohibiting broader record edits and deletion.
When it does not fit
Do not select Scrut when policy requires that an AI connection be unable to change any compliance data. Uploading a file or attaching a link is still a data change, even if no existing record is edited and no record can be deleted.
How to choose among the alternatives
Choose LogicGate or Strike Graph for an absolute no-write boundary
These are the clearest matches when the policy statement is “the AI may read compliance records but must not change them.” Decide between them using the role model, client support, plan eligibility, regional requirements, and the administrative process for enabling and revoking access.
Choose Drata or Vanta for controlled, broader-platform access
These options make sense when their wider platform coverage is more important than a server-wide no-write guarantee. Require a documented scope-and-role review, test the resulting tool list, and repeat the review whenever permissions or modules change.
Choose Scrut only for evidence-ingestion workflows
Scrut is the specialized choice when a narrow evidence attachment action is part of the design. It is not a strict read-only alternative.
Connection checklist for production compliance data
Use this checklist regardless of which MCP server you select:
- Define the data questions. Write down the records the assistant must retrieve and exclude unrelated modules.
- Confirm the write boundary. Ask whether the server is read-only by design, read-only only through scopes, or capable of limited evidence writes.
- Inspect effective permissions. Evaluate administrator scopes together with the user’s role; either one can expand or restrict access.
- Inventory tools. Look for create, update, upload, attach, approve, archive, and delete operations, not just labels such as “read-only.”
- Test outside production. Use a test tenant or harmless records to verify retrieval and confirm that mutation calls are impossible or rejected.
- Document revocation. Record the exact procedure for disabling one person’s connection and test that it works.
- Review audit records. Confirm which MCP calls, tool names, user identity, and AI-client identity are captured. Scrut’s comparison specifically notes that the AI client itself is not recorded.
- Assess the data path. Identify the vendor-hosted endpoint, the AI client receiving the data, regional processing locations, retention, and training terms.
- Recheck changes. Revisit scopes, roles, enabled modules, and tool inventories after product updates or organizational role changes.
AI-client and data-governance considerations
An MCP connection creates a new path for compliance information. Even a strict read-only server can send sensitive audit details, control descriptions, vendor information, risk records, or evidence metadata to the selected AI client. Read-only describes what the AI can do to the source platform; it does not describe what the AI client may retain, display, export, or use for model improvement.
Include the client and MCP provider in vendor and access reviews. Check retention periods, training-use terms, regional processing, administrator visibility, conversation sharing, and account offboarding. Limit the connection to the minimum company, modules, and user roles needed for the stated workflow.
