It targets Android 7.0 and newer, can launch shortcuts from a double tap on the back, and is open source, but it needs Android accessibility access and may require sensitivity and battery tuning. Motorola owners should first look for the built-in Quick Launch feature. If neither option works on your device, Android’s accessibility shortcuts provide dependable button, gesture, or Quick Settings triggers.
Choose the right back-tap alternative
Quick Tap is a software gesture, not a special accessory. The best replacement depends mainly on your phone rather than on the action you want to perform.

| Option | Compatible phones | Typical actions | Extra permission | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel Quick Tap | Pixel 4a (5G) and later | Screenshot, play or pause media, show notifications, open an app | None beyond normal system settings | Most reliable choice on a supported Pixel |
| Tap, Tap | Project targets Android 7.0 and newer; behavior varies by device | Launch an app or shortcut and other configured actions | Android accessibility access | Closest like-for-like option on most non-Pixel phones |
| Motorola Quick Launch | Supported Motorola models; menus and availability vary by software version | Open an app or start an action | Built into supported firmware | Motorola owners who want a native feature |
| Android accessibility shortcuts | Android devices with the documented accessibility controls | Turn on accessibility services or switch between them | Only for the accessibility service you choose | Fallback when back tapping is unavailable or unreliable |
There is no verified physical button or case that adds the same system-level back-tap behavior to every Android phone. A generic tapping accessory is not an equivalent substitute; use the software options above.

What Pixel Quick Tap does—and who gets it
Google’s native feature listens for two taps on the rear of the phone and performs a selected action. Google Pixel Help documents screenshots, media play/pause, showing notifications, and opening an app among the available actions. Quick Tap is officially available on Pixel 4a (5G) and later, so an older Pixel or another manufacturer’s phone may not show the setting at all.

Configure Quick Tap on a supported Pixel
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Gestures > Quick tap.
- Turn on the option to use Quick Tap.
- Select the action you want, such as taking a screenshot, controlling media, showing notifications, or launching an app.
- Lock the phone and try two firm taps near the center of the back. Move the taps slightly if your case or the phone’s construction makes detection inconsistent.
Because this is part of Pixel’s firmware, it does not require installing a separate gesture app or granting accessibility access. If Settings > System > Gestures has no Quick tap entry, the model or software build is not supported; installing a third-party app will not make the native menu appear.
Tap, Tap: the broadest non-Pixel substitute
Tap, Tap is an open-source project that ports the double-tap-on-the-back behavior introduced with Android 12 to devices running Android 7.0 and newer. It exposes gesture and action configuration, including the ability to launch shortcuts. That makes it the closest conceptual match to Quick Tap for phones without a native implementation.
What to check before installing
- Confirm that the phone runs Android 7.0 or newer. The project’s stated target is broad, but compatibility is not identical across every manufacturer, processor, case, or Android build.
- Read the project’s current release notes and source before choosing an installer. Open-source availability lets you inspect how the app is maintained and what permissions it requests.
- Decide whether an accessibility-based gesture service is acceptable on a phone used for work, banking, or other sensitive tasks.
Set up Tap, Tap
- Install a current Tap, Tap build from the project’s official distribution channel.
- Open the app and follow its first-run instructions.
- When Android asks, enable the app’s accessibility service. Tap, Tap needs this permission to observe the gesture and carry out configured actions.
- Choose the double-tap gesture and select an action, such as launching an app or a shortcut. The exact labels can change between project versions.
- Use the app’s sensitivity or gesture test controls, if present, while tapping the back with your normal case fitted.
- Test the action from the lock screen and from inside several apps. If the action should not run in a particular context, add that context to the app’s exclusions or gates when the build provides those controls.
- Leave the service running for a day and check both missed taps and accidental triggers. Adjust sensitivity before deciding that the phone is incompatible.
Permission and reliability trade-offs
Accessibility access is more powerful than a normal notification or overlay permission. Android describes accessibility shortcuts as a way to turn accessibility apps on or switch between them, and the same permission category allows a gesture service to act on your behalf. Grant it only after reviewing the app and its source, and remove access if you stop using the feature.
Tap, Tap does not guarantee identical behavior on every Android device. Back-panel materials, internal sensors, case thickness, background-process limits, and manufacturer power management can all change detection. Treat the Android 7.0+ statement as a project target, not a promise that every model will perform equally well.

Motorola Quick Launch: check the built-in feature first
Motorola documents a native Quick Launch gesture on supported phones: double-tap the back to open an app or start an action. Availability and menu names vary by model and software version, so a procedure that works on one Motorola handset may not appear on another.
Find and configure Quick Launch
- Open Settings and use the search field for Quick Launch or double tap back.
- If the setting appears, open it and enable the gesture.
- Choose the app or action offered by your model.
- Try two deliberate taps on the rear panel, then repeat with the case installed.
If Settings search returns nothing, check the phone’s built-in gesture or Moto settings page and confirm the exact model’s support documentation. Do not assume that every Motorola device has Quick Launch; unsupported models should use Tap, Tap or an accessibility shortcut instead.
Android accessibility shortcuts when back tapping is not available
Accessibility shortcuts are the dependable fallback because they do not depend on a rear-panel gesture sensor or a particular phone design. Google’s Android Accessibility Help lists several triggers; the available choices can vary by Android version and by the accessibility service selected.

Hold both volume keys
Android can assign an accessibility service to the volume-up and volume-down shortcut. Press and hold both keys together to activate or switch the assigned service. This option is practical when you want a physical control without adding an on-screen button.
Swipe from the bottom
Google documents a two-finger swipe up from the bottom as an accessibility shortcut. Devices using TalkBack may require a three-finger swipe instead. Because the gesture is handled by Android’s accessibility system, it is separate from any manufacturer back-tap implementation.
Triple-tap magnification
Magnification can be assigned to a triple tap, allowing quick zooming without a rear gesture. This is intended for magnification rather than arbitrary app launching, but it is often the most useful built-in shortcut for visual accessibility.
Quick Settings shortcut
Add the accessibility service or accessibility shortcut tile to Quick Settings. Pull down the shade and tap the tile whenever you need it. This is slower than a back tap but remains available even when gesture detection or background processing fails.

Why a back tap can miss or trigger accidentally
Back-tap detection is sensitive to the physical phone and to Android’s process management. Work through these checks before replacing an otherwise suitable option.
- Case interference: Test once without the case, then with it installed. Thick, rugged, or shock-absorbing cases can damp the motion the app is trying to detect.
- Tap location: Try the upper-middle and center-back areas rather than the camera bump or a flexible lower panel. Use two distinct taps instead of one long press.
- Sensitivity: Lower sensitivity when the phone triggers in a pocket or while being set down; raise it when deliberate taps are missed.
- Background restrictions: If the gesture stops after the screen has been idle, review the app’s battery or background-activity setting. Manufacturer power management can suspend an accessibility service.
- Conflicting gestures: Disable another app that listens for shakes, taps, or accessibility events and test again. Two gesture services can compete for similar input.
- Lock-screen behavior: Test locked and unlocked states separately. Some actions are unavailable until the phone is unlocked, even when the gesture itself is detected.
- Reboot and permission check: Restart after changing accessibility access, then verify that the service is still enabled. An Android update or security policy can turn it off.
Privacy, safety, and battery considerations
Native Pixel and Motorola gestures are part of the phone’s own software and avoid granting a separate third-party accessibility service. A third-party option such as Tap, Tap requires more trust: accessibility access can observe interface events and perform actions, so inspect the project, installer, requested permissions, and update history before enabling it.
Gesture detection must run while the phone is in use, which can have a battery cost. The project discusses battery-conscious detection, but the result still depends on the handset and its power-management rules. Compare a full day with the service enabled to a typical day without it, and remove unnecessary actions or exclusions that keep the service active more often than needed.
Use the least powerful shortcut that solves your problem. If you only need magnification, choose the system magnification shortcut instead of a general-purpose gesture service. If you only need a screenshot on a supported Pixel, Quick Tap avoids adding another app.
Best Value
Which option fits common situations?
You have a Pixel 4a (5G) or newer
Use Quick Tap first. It is integrated, documented by Google, and configured at Settings > System > Gestures > Quick tap. Install a third-party service only if the native action list does not meet your needs.
You have a non-Pixel phone on Android 7.0 or newer
Try Tap, Tap when a true double-tap-on-the-back workflow matters. Expect to spend time on sensitivity, case testing, and battery settings, and treat accessibility permission as a deliberate security decision.
You have a Motorola phone
Search Settings for Quick Launch before installing anything. A supported model can provide the desired action without a third-party accessibility service; unsupported models need another option.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →You need a shortcut that must work regardless of the phone’s rear design
Choose an accessibility button, volume-key shortcut, bottom-edge swipe, magnification gesture, or Quick Settings tile. These controls are less discreet than a back tap but are easier to diagnose and are not dependent on the case or back-panel construction.
Your phone misses taps even after tuning
Stop treating the rear gesture as the primary control. Keep the most useful action on an accessibility shortcut and use the back tap only as a convenience. This prevents a missed gesture from becoming a barrier to a safety or accessibility function.
Practical testing checklist
- Record the Android version and exact phone model.
- Check for a native Quick Tap or Quick Launch entry before installing an app.
- Test with and without the case.
- Assign one low-risk action first, such as opening a non-sensitive app.
- Test while locked, unlocked, idle, and inside several apps.
- Check for accidental activations in a pocket, on a desk, and while holding the phone normally.
- Review accessibility access and battery settings after a full day.
- Keep an accessibility shortcut configured as a fallback until the gesture proves dependable.
Bottom line
For Pixels, use the built-in Quick Tap on Pixel 4a (5G) and later. For most other Android phones, Tap, Tap is the closest software alternative, provided you accept accessibility access and test it on your exact hardware. Motorola users should look for native Quick Launch first. When rear tapping is missing or unreliable, Android accessibility shortcuts are the safer, more predictable replacement.
