Best alternatives to Quick Share for transferring files between Android and Windows (2026 guide)

The best Quick Share alternative depends on how you work. Use Phone Link when you want file sharing alongside messages and other phone features, or use Windows 11 File Explorer access when you need to browse, copy, move, rename, and delete files on an Android phone. LocalSend and KDE Connect are additional third-party options, but their current platform and security details should be checked in the projects’ own documentation before adoption. Quick Share itself remains a good nearby-transfer baseline when your Windows edition, processor architecture, phone, and wireless settings meet Google’s requirements.

Which alternative should you choose?

These tools are not interchangeable. One is a Windows phone-integration feature, one turns a supported Android phone into a manageable location in File Explorer, and the other two are independent projects. Start with the workflow you need rather than looking for a single universal winner.

Phone Link and Link to Windows Send files while using linked-phone features in Windows Windows 10 with the May 2019 update or later; Android 10 or later; Link to Windows 1.24032.518.0 or later; Phone Link 1.24032.156.0 or later; compatible phone and Microsoft account A cloud-stored item is shared as a cloud link, not as the file itself
Windows 11 File Explorer access Browse and manage phone storage from the PC Windows 11; Android 11 or later; Link to Windows 1.24072.258.0 or later Requires a supported pairing and the stated software versions
LocalSend Third-party file-transfer app Current platform, network, and privacy requirements are not established here Check the project’s current documentation before relying on it
KDE Connect Third-party cross-device utility Current platform and transfer requirements are not established here Verify present-day support and behavior before deployment
Quick Share Nearby sharing between compatible devices 64-bit Windows 10 or later; Windows 11 or later on ARM PCs; Android 6 or later; Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled; devices within about 5 metres (16 feet) Samsung PCs should use Samsung’s Quick Share app rather than Google’s Windows app

There are no reliable comparative speed, reliability, or privacy measurements in the available product documentation, so claims that one of these tools is universally faster or safer would be unjustified.

Phone Link: the practical Quick Share replacement for integrated Windows use

Phone Link is the most natural choice if you want transfers to sit beside notifications, messages, photos, or other linked-phone functions. Microsoft’s documented minimums are Windows 10 with the May 2019 update or newer, Android 10 or newer, Link to Windows version 1.24032.518.0 or newer, and Phone Link version 1.24032.156.0 or newer.

What you need before setup

  • A Windows PC meeting the Windows 10 update requirement or running a later Windows release.
  • An Android phone running Android 10 or later.
  • Current versions of both companion apps: Link to Windows on the phone and Phone Link on Windows.
  • A Microsoft account used during setup. Android permissions requested by the companion app must also be granted for the features you enable.
  • A supported phone model. Microsoft’s setup material identifies selected Android, Samsung, HONOR, OPPO, ASUS, and vivo devices, but feature availability varies by model and region.

Setup and transfer workflow

  1. Open Phone Link on the Windows PC and choose the Android-phone setup option.
  2. Install or update Link to Windows on the phone, then sign in with the Microsoft account requested by the setup flow.
  3. Use the pairing code or QR procedure shown by Phone Link and approve the Android permissions needed for sharing and connected features.
  4. When pairing completes, use Phone Link’s file-sharing control to select or send an item. The exact controls can vary with the phone model and app build, so follow the labels displayed in your current version.
  5. Check the destination on the PC. If the source item is stored in a cloud service rather than on the phone, Phone Link shares a link to that cloud item instead of downloading and transmitting the file itself.

The cloud-link behavior is the key distinction for people who expect a local copy. A recipient following the link may need access to the cloud account or its sharing permissions; a link is not equivalent to a standalone file transfer.

When Phone Link is the right fit

  • You already use Phone Link and want the fewest additional applications.
  • You need occasional sends rather than a full, folder-level view of phone storage.
  • You value a linked-phone workspace more than a dedicated transfer utility.

When to choose something else

Choose File Explorer access if you regularly organize folders or need operations such as rename and delete. Choose another option if your phone cannot meet the Android or companion-app requirements, or if your organization does not permit the required Microsoft-account pairing.

Windows 11 File Explorer access: manage Android files without a cable

This is a different workflow from sending an individual item through Phone Link. Microsoft documents wireless phone access directly from File Explorer for a paired Android 11-or-later device, a Windows 11 PC, and Link to Windows version 1.24072.258.0 or later.

How the supported connection works

  1. Update Windows 11 and the Link to Windows app so the PC and phone meet the documented versions.
  2. Pair the Android phone with Windows through the Link to Windows connection flow and approve the requested permissions.
  3. Open File Explorer on the PC. On supported connections, the phone appears as a mobile device alongside the PC’s other locations.
  4. Open the phone entry to browse its available folders.
  5. Use the normal File Explorer commands to open, copy, move, rename, or delete items, and to transfer files wirelessly between the phone and PC.

Why this is better for ongoing organization

File Explorer access suits camera libraries, downloaded documents, recordings, and other collections that need sorting. You can work with folders and standard Windows file commands instead of selecting one item at a time in a sharing interface. It also avoids the need to connect a USB cable for the documented wireless operations.

What can prevent the phone from appearing

  • The PC is running Windows 10 rather than Windows 11.
  • The phone runs Android 10 or an earlier release instead of Android 11 or later.
  • Link to Windows is below version 1.24072.258.0.
  • Pairing or a required Android permission was not completed.
  • The handset is not among the supported device configurations for the feature.

Update the operating system and companion app first, then remove and recreate the pairing if the versions are correct but the mobile-device entry is still absent. The feature’s availability is controlled by Microsoft’s supported-device and software matrix, not by File Explorer alone.

LocalSend: a third-party option that needs a current check

LocalSend is commonly considered when users want an independent transfer application rather than a Windows-integrated feature. Its inclusion in an alternatives shortlist is reasonable, but do not assume that its current Windows and Android support, network model, encryption behavior, or privacy settings match an earlier release.

What to verify before installing

  • Whether the current release supports both your Android version and Windows edition.
  • Whether transfers require the devices to share a local network, and whether that network can be used safely in your environment.
  • How the application identifies nearby devices and confirms a transfer.
  • Where received files are stored and whether approval is required for each transfer.
  • Current project statements about encryption, logging, permissions, and source-code availability.

Use the project’s current documentation for those answers. Without that check, it is not responsible to promise a specific setup sequence, transfer range, security property, or performance advantage over Quick Share.

KDE Connect: useful to investigate, but do not assume identical behavior

KDE Connect is another established cross-device project that can be evaluated for Android-to-Windows transfers. Its exact Windows packaging, Android requirements, pairing process, and file-transfer behavior can change, so verify each detail in the current official documentation before choosing it for personal or managed devices.

Questions to answer first

  • Which current Windows and Android versions are supported?
  • Does the release you plan to use require both devices to be on the same network?
  • Which pairing approval and Windows firewall permissions are required?
  • Can it send individual files only, or does it expose a broader browse-and-manage workflow?
  • Where does it save incoming files, and what controls prevent an unwanted transfer?

KDE Connect should therefore be treated as a candidate for testing, not as a drop-in equivalent whose capabilities can be inferred from its name or from another version.

Quick Share remains a useful baseline

Before replacing Quick Share, check whether a compatibility issue is the real problem. Google documents support for 64-bit Windows 10 and later. ARM-based Windows PCs require Windows 11 or later. Android 6 and later devices have Quick Share built in, so an additional Android app is not required.

Windows and Samsung requirements

Google’s Windows application is intended for non-Samsung PCs. Samsung PC owners should install Samsung’s Quick Share application from the Microsoft Store instead. Installing the wrong vendor’s application can make a working phone and PC appear incompatible.

Wireless conditions and distance

Quick Share is designed for nearby transfers. Google’s stated guideline is approximately 16 feet (5 metres), and its Windows guidance says to enable both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the PC. Keep both devices within that range, unlock them as required by their sharing settings, and check that neither wireless radio has been disabled by airplane mode or an administrator policy.

When an alternative is genuinely better

  • Use File Explorer access when you need repeated folder management rather than one-off nearby sends.
  • Use Phone Link when integrated Windows phone features matter as much as the file itself.
  • Investigate LocalSend or KDE Connect when a third-party workflow is acceptable and you have verified the current documentation.

A decision framework for common transfer jobs

Send one photo or document occasionally

Try Quick Share first if both devices meet its Windows, Android, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and distance requirements. Phone Link is the integrated alternative when you already have a supported pairing.

Copy a folder of recordings or photographs

Use Windows 11 File Explorer access. Its documented copy and move commands are better suited to a collection than repeatedly invoking a share dialog.

Rename and remove files from the PC

Choose the File Explorer workflow, which explicitly supports open, copy, move, rename, and delete operations on the connected phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Share an item that lives in cloud storage

Phone Link can share the item, but expect a cloud link rather than the file contents. If the recipient needs an offline copy, download the file locally first and then transfer that local copy.

Use a third-party utility on a mixed-device network

Evaluate LocalSend or KDE Connect only after confirming current platform support, connection requirements, permissions, and transfer controls in their own documentation. Do not select one solely because it appears on an alternatives list.

Troubleshooting checklist

The PC cannot find the phone

  1. Confirm that the phone’s Android version meets the selected feature: Android 10 or later for the documented Phone Link sharing minimum, or Android 11 or later for File Explorer access.
  2. Check the companion-app versions. Phone Link sharing requires Link to Windows 1.24032.518.0 or later and Phone Link 1.24032.156.0 or later; File Explorer access requires Link to Windows 1.24072.258.0 or later.
  3. Verify that the correct Microsoft account is used on both sides of a Phone Link setup.
  4. Open Android settings and review the permissions granted to Link to Windows.
  5. Disconnect and pair the devices again if the software is current but the connection remains stale.

Quick Share fails or is unavailable

  • Check that the PC is 64-bit Windows 10 or later, or Windows 11 or later if it uses ARM.
  • On a Samsung PC, use Samsung’s Quick Share app rather than Google’s.
  • Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the Windows PC.
  • Move the devices within roughly 5 metres (16 feet).
  • Confirm that the Android phone is running Android 6 or later.

A cloud transfer produces a link

This is expected Phone Link behavior for a cloud-stored item. Download a local copy before sharing if the recipient must receive the file itself rather than a URL.

A third-party app behaves differently from an online guide

Check the release-specific project documentation. LocalSend and KDE Connect can change supported platforms, network assumptions, permissions, and transfer behavior; an older tutorial is not proof that the current build works the same way.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy and network decisions

Choose software that fits the network you control. A nearby-transfer feature is generally easiest to reason about when both devices are in the same physical place, while a cloud link introduces account permissions and a separate service’s access rules. For managed PCs, check whether Microsoft-account sign-in, companion-app permissions, wireless discovery, or third-party applications are allowed by policy.

For LocalSend and KDE Connect in particular, read the current project documentation before transferring sensitive material. Confirm whether traffic stays on the local network, what approval prompts appear, where files are written, and how the application is updated. Those details should be verified rather than assumed.

Bottom line

For most Windows users, Phone Link is the closest integrated alternative to Quick Share, while Windows 11 File Explorer access is the stronger choice for browsing and managing a phone’s files. Keep Quick Share for straightforward nearby sends when its compatibility rules are satisfied. Consider LocalSend or KDE Connect only after checking their current official requirements and security behavior for your devices.
