Choose by the job you need done: use Quick Share when you mainly want wireless file transfers between Android and a Windows PC. Choose KDE Connect when you need a broader link—shared clipboard, notifications, file access, phone finding, or remote control—or when your computer runs macOS or Linux. Neither is a universal, feature-for-feature replacement for Phone Link, and compatibility depends on the phone, computer operating system, Android version, and app version.
Quick comparison: which Phone Link alternative fits?
| Your priority | Best-supported choice | What you get | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Move photos, videos, documents, or other files between Android and Windows | Google Quick Share | A dedicated Android-to-Windows transfer app; Android 6 and later devices already include Quick Share according to Google’s Android documentation. | Windows and device requirements can change. Samsung PC owners are directed to install Samsung’s edition from the Microsoft Store. |
| Share a clipboard, view notifications, access files, find the phone, or control the computer remotely | KDE Connect | A wider set of cross-device functions, with Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux-related distribution routes listed by the KDE project. | Features are not guaranteed to behave identically on every operating-system pair; check the support for your specific combination. |
| Keep the most integrated Windows-and-Android experience on supported hardware | Phone Link | Microsoft’s own Android integration, including functions that vary by phone maker, Android version, app version, and Windows support. | This is the baseline rather than an alternative. Microsoft maintains a current compatibility list because support is not universal. |
| Replace Intel Unison on a Lenovo Aura Edition PC | Lenovo Smart Connect | The destination Intel identifies for Lenovo Aura Edition users after Unison support ended. | It is not a general replacement for every PC or every former Unison setup. |
The practical decision is therefore narrow: Quick Share for files, KDE Connect for a multi-function link, and a compatibility check before installing either.

What “alternative to Phone Link” really means
Phone Link combines several jobs in one Windows interface, but those jobs are not equally important to every user. Someone who only needs to copy camera pictures does not need notification mirroring or remote controls. Conversely, a person who wants a shared clipboard and alerts while working on a Linux laptop will find a file-transfer utility too limited.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPhone Link itself works with Android and selected partner devices, but Microsoft documents dependencies on the phone model, Android version, Windows support, and app versions. A feature that appears in a demonstration may therefore be unavailable on your handset. An alternative should be judged against the particular function you are missing, not against the name “Phone Link.”

Google Quick Share: the focused Windows file-transfer option
What Quick Share does
Google’s Android documentation presents Quick Share as an app for transferring files between Android and Windows PCs. On Android 6 and later, Quick Share is already available on the device according to that documentation, so many users do not need to install a separate mobile app. The Windows side uses the Quick Share app.
This makes Quick Share the clearest choice when the requirement is “send a file from my phone to my PC” or the reverse. It is not presented as a complete dashboard for messages, notifications, calls, or remote control.
How to set it up
- Confirm the operating systems. Check that the phone is running Android 6 or later and that the Windows computer meets the current requirements shown by Google’s Quick Share app page.
- Install the official Windows app. Download Quick Share from Google’s Android/Windows documentation rather than using an unofficial installer. If the PC is a Samsung computer, Google directs owners to Samsung’s version in the Microsoft Store.
- Open Quick Share on both devices. Keep the phone unlocked while pairing or sending the first file, and follow the visibility and connection prompts shown by the current app versions.
- Choose the file on Android. In the phone’s file manager or gallery, use the system Share control, select Quick Share, and choose the computer when it appears.
- Accept the transfer on Windows. Confirm the incoming item in the Quick Share app and note the destination folder it reports.
- Test the reverse direction. Use the Windows app to select a small file and send it to the phone. A two-way test catches visibility or permission problems before you attempt a large transfer.
Menu names and visibility controls can change with Android and Windows releases. If the computer does not appear, return to the current Quick Share help and requirements page and verify that the installed Windows edition is the one intended for your PC.

When Quick Share is the better choice
- You transfer photos, videos, PDFs, or project files more often than you read notifications.
- You want the smallest setup and do not need a persistent phone dashboard.
- Your computer is a Windows PC and your phone supports the Android version listed by Google.
What Quick Share does not replace
Quick Share should not be marketed as a full Phone Link substitute. The evidence for this option establishes file transfer, not a shared clipboard, notification stream, text-message interface, or remote-control system. If any of those are essential, evaluate KDE Connect instead.
KDE Connect: the broader cross-device toolkit
Capabilities listed by the KDE project
KDE describes Connect as a set of cross-device functions rather than a single-purpose transfer tool. Its feature list includes clipboard sharing, file access and sharing, computer remote control, phone finding, and notifications. The project’s download routes include Android and desktop options for Windows and macOS, with Linux-related availability through the KDE ecosystem.

That scope makes KDE Connect the stronger candidate for a non-Windows computer or for someone who wants several small interactions to work together. The feature list does not guarantee identical behavior on every operating-system pair, so treat each capability as something to verify on your phone and desktop combination.
Basic setup sequence
- Install the mobile and desktop components. Use the Android distribution and the desktop download route listed by KDE Connect. Select the package for your computer’s operating system.
- Put both devices on the same local network when prompted. KDE Connect’s pairing process will show discoverable devices according to the current app and network configuration.
- Send a pairing request. Open KDE Connect on the phone, select the computer, and request pairing. Approve the request on the other device.
- Grant only the functions you intend to use. Notification access is needed for notification features; file access or sharing prompts apply to file functions; clipboard and remote-control features may request their own permissions. Read each Android prompt instead of approving every option automatically.
- Run small tests. Copy a short sentence, send a small file, and trigger a test notification. Then try the remote-control function if you need it. Testing one feature at a time makes a failed permission easier to identify.
- Adjust device visibility and pairing. If the computer remains visible when you do not need the connection, use KDE Connect’s device and pairing controls to pause or remove the relationship.
Where KDE Connect fits best
| Need | Why KDE Connect fits | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Shared clipboard | The project lists clipboard sharing as a feature, allowing short copied items to move between paired devices. | Verify support and permission behavior for your exact Android and desktop pair. |
| Notifications on the computer | KDE lists notification integration. | Android notification access is sensitive and must be enabled deliberately. |
| File access and sharing | Files can be exchanged within the same broader pairing rather than through a separate transfer-only app. | Available actions and destinations vary by desktop platform. |
| Remote control | The feature list includes computer remote control. | Use it only when you understand which computer actions the granted permission enables. |
| Finding a misplaced phone | KDE lists phone-finding functionality. | Confirm that the phone is paired and reachable before relying on it. |
Trade-offs compared with Quick Share
KDE Connect offers more functions, which also means more setup decisions and permissions. If all you need is a one-off photo transfer, its broader feature set may be unnecessary. If you need a clipboard, notifications, or remote input, those extra controls are the reason to choose it.

Compatibility is the most common source of disappointment because “Android” and “Windows” are broad categories. Check these items first:
- Phone Android version: Google’s Quick Share documentation specifically identifies Android 6 and later for built-in availability.
- Computer operating system: Quick Share is documented for Windows. KDE Connect lists Android and desktop routes that include Windows and macOS, with Linux availability through KDE distributions.
- Phone manufacturer and model: Microsoft says Phone Link support and functions depend on selected partner devices and device context. A manufacturer-specific edition may be required; Google’s documentation directs Samsung PC owners to Samsung’s Microsoft Store version of Quick Share.
- Application versions: Install current versions from the official distribution source. Microsoft explicitly notes that some Phone Link functions require particular app or device versions.
- Permissions: Notification, clipboard, file, and remote-control features cannot work until the relevant Android and desktop permissions are granted.
Do not infer support from a friend’s setup. Record the phone model, Android version, computer operating system, and the exact task you need before selecting an app.
Phone Link remains the baseline for supported Windows pairs
Because this is an alternatives guide, it is useful to define what you are moving away from. Phone Link is Microsoft’s integrated option for Android-and-Windows pairing. Microsoft’s support material covers setup and supported devices, while its file-transfer guidance explains that Link to Windows and Phone Link behavior depends on the device, Android version, and app versions.

If Phone Link already performs the function you need, replacing it may add another pairing and permission system without improving the result. If it fails on your phone, lacks a desired feature, or you use macOS or Linux, Quick Share or KDE Connect can address a narrower or different requirement.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Intel Unison is no longer a current general recommendation
Intel states that support for Intel Unison ended on January 1, 2026. Its landing page directs users with Lenovo Aura Edition systems to Lenovo Smart Connect. That direction is specific: it does not establish Lenovo Smart Connect as a universal replacement for Unison on every Lenovo computer, nor as a general Phone Link alternative for all Android users.
If Unison is installed on a non-Aura system, treat it as discontinued software and check the computer manufacturer’s current support guidance rather than assuming new fixes or feature support will arrive.
Choose by scenario
“I only need to move photos and documents”
Start with Quick Share. It is the option in this comparison explicitly positioned for Android-to-Windows file transfer. Confirm Android and Windows requirements, install the official Windows app, and test a small file in each direction.
“I need clipboard and notifications as well as files”
Choose KDE Connect if your desktop and phone are supported. Pair the devices, grant notification and clipboard permissions separately, and test each function. Do not assume that a successful file transfer means every other feature is enabled.

“I use a Mac or Linux computer”
Quick Share’s documented target here is Windows, so KDE Connect is the more relevant first candidate because KDE lists Android and desktop routes including macOS and Linux-related availability. Confirm the exact package and feature support for your distribution.
“My Windows PC is a Samsung model”
For Quick Share, follow Google’s direction to install Samsung’s version from the Microsoft Store. Do not substitute the generic Windows installer if the manufacturer-specific route is required by the current documentation.
“I want the same experience my friend has”
Compare the underlying devices before comparing apps. Phone maker, Android release, Windows edition, app version, and granted permissions can produce different results even when both people say they use Android and Windows.

The computer is not listed
- Confirm that the desktop app is installed and open.
- Check that the phone and computer meet the app’s current operating-system requirements.
- Recheck device visibility and pairing controls on both sides.
- For KDE Connect, verify the desktop and phone are using the network arrangement expected by the pairing process.
- Close and reopen both apps, then retry with a small file or a fresh pairing request.
Files transfer, but notifications or clipboard do not
This usually indicates a feature-specific permission or platform limitation rather than a failed pairing. Open Android settings for the relevant app, review notification access and other requested permissions, and test one feature at a time. KDE’s feature list is broad, but it is not a promise that every function works identically across every operating-system pair.
Phone Link worked before but a feature disappeared
Check Microsoft’s current supported-device and requirements pages. Microsoft documents dependencies on device context, Android version, Windows support, and app versions. A phone update, manufacturer change, or app update can alter which functions are available.
Best Value
A large transfer fails
Retry with a small file first. If the small test succeeds, check the destination folder, available storage, and the current app requirements before repeating the large transfer. For critical or very large files, a wired transfer can be a separate fallback, but it is not required for choosing between the wireless software options covered here.
Permissions and practical privacy decisions
These apps can request access beyond a single file transfer. Notification access can expose incoming alerts to the computer; clipboard sharing can move copied text between devices; file permissions enable browsing or sending; remote-control permissions enable computer actions. Grant the smallest set that matches your task, and remove access or unpair the computer when you no longer use the feature.
The official documentation reviewed here establishes functions and compatibility, not a universal privacy or encryption guarantee for every operating-system combination. Avoid assuming that two apps handle data identically; read the current permission screens and vendor documentation for the versions you install.
A simple decision checklist
- Write down the one function you cannot live without: files, clipboard, notifications, remote control, or phone finding.
- Confirm Android, Windows, macOS, or Linux compatibility for that function—not just for the app in general.
- Install from the official Google, KDE, Microsoft Store, or manufacturer route identified for your device.
- Pair with a small test file and one test notification or clipboard item before moving important data.
- Review permissions individually and unpair unused computers.
- If you are considering Intel Unison, note its January 1, 2026 end of support and consult Intel’s Lenovo Aura Edition guidance instead of treating Unison as an active general-purpose choice.
The Bottom Line
For most readers, the answer is straightforward: Quick Share is the focused Android-to-Windows file-transfer alternative, while KDE Connect is the broader choice for clipboard, notifications, file sharing, phone finding, and remote control across a wider range of desktops. Check your exact phone, operating system, app version, and permissions before expecting Phone Link-level integration.
