Choose Geartrade when you want independent, multi-brand consignment and a chance to receive cash-like payment. The right channel depends on four practical questions: whether you need one brand or many, how much refurbishment information you require, whether you want store credit or money, and whether the program operates in your country.

What Patagonia Worn Wear sets as the benchmark
Patagonia launched Worn Wear as a clothing-resale business in 2017. Its trade-in program accepts most Patagonia clothing and gear when the item is functional, clean and in good condition. You can mail an eligible item with a $7 flat-rate shipping label or take it to a Patagonia store. Accepted trade-ins earn credit for Patagonia.com, WornWear.com or Patagonia stores.

For buyers, Worn Wear says resale items are washed, inspected, authenticated and graded for condition, with repairs made when needed. Those items are backed by Patagonia’s Ironclad Guarantee. A used Patagonia Nano Puff Hoody is a representative example of the sort of insulated product that appears in the catalog.

Patagonia describes the purpose of resale as connecting new and used shopping so products remain in service longer instead of requiring new resources for every purchase. That model is useful as a comparison point, but no single refurbishment standard applies across the outdoor industry. Each alternative below has different acceptance rules, processing, payouts and geographic limits.

REI Re/Supply: the best broad multi-brand alternative
What you can buy
REI Re/Supply is designed for shoppers who do not want to limit themselves to one manufacturer. The used inventory includes clothing, shoes, sleeping bags, backpacks and tents from many brands. Products come from returns or member trade-ins, and REI says items are hand selected and inspected before resale.
How condition grades help
Every Re/Supply item is assigned one of four labels: excellent, lightly worn, moderately worn or well worn. The labels are more useful than a generic “used” description because they establish a common vocabulary across different brands and categories. They do not replace reading the individual listing: a moderately worn trail shoe and a moderately worn rain shell can have very different practical implications.
Trading in and getting paid
Buying and trading in through Re/Supply are member benefits. Accepted trade-ins are paid with an REI e-gift card rather than cash. That arrangement is attractive if you already buy from REI and can use the credit for a future equipment purchase; it is less suitable if you need money back or want to sell to buyers outside the retailer’s ecosystem.
Environmental claim and its limit
REI’s used-gear FAQ says buying used instead of new typically avoids 50% or more of the associated CO2 emissions. This is an REI estimate, not an independently verified lifecycle study, and the result can differ by product, shipping, repair history and how long the replacement item is used. Treat it as directional evidence for extending product life, not as a guaranteed saving for every purchase.
When Re/Supply is the right first stop
- You want several brands and categories in one checkout.
- You value a visible, standardized condition grade.
- You are comfortable receiving retailer credit instead of cash.
- You can satisfy the membership requirement for buying or trading in.
The North Face Renewed: best for The North Face owners
Brand-run refurbishment
The North Face describes Renewed as a refurbished and upcycled platform. Customers can buy used The North Face gear or trade in unwanted The North Face products. Because the program is limited to one manufacturer, sizing conventions, materials and product naming are generally easier to interpret than on a mixed marketplace.

Trade-in credits
The U.S. trade-in page lists three possible credit amounts: $10, $30 or $50. The exact amount depends on the submitted product and the program’s eligibility assessment. These are credits, not a guaranteed cash price, so compare the value with what you would receive from an independent consignment service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat happens to submitted gear
The North Face says submitted products are inspected, washed and tuned up for resale. Items that cannot be renewed may be recycled or donated. That gives sellers a defined end path for unsuitable products, although the public information does not establish that every item receives the same repair or replacement work.
Country restrictions matter
The Canadian Renewed Marketplace supports buying used products and selling for cash or a gift card, but buying and selling are currently limited to customers with a verified Canadian address. The U.S. trade-in page has its own rules. Do not assume that a Canadian marketplace listing, payout method or return process applies in another country; confirm the live terms for your address before shipping gear.
Choose Renewed when
- Your closet is already mostly The North Face and brand-specific credit is useful.
- You want the manufacturer to inspect, clean and tune up the product.
- You are willing to check country eligibility and accept a fixed credit structure.
Arc’teryx ReGEAR and ReBIRD: a specialist route for technical gear
What is established
Arc’teryx maintains an official resale and trade-in eligibility pathway under the ReGEAR/ReBIRD name. It is intended for Arc’teryx products, making it the most direct brand-run option for technical shells, climbing apparel and other Arc’teryx-specific equipment.
What you must verify before committing
The available program information confirms the trade-in pathway but does not establish a universal payout, inventory level, processing checklist or geographic coverage. Those details can change by market and over time. Before sending an item, check the current eligibility page for accepted models, condition requirements, shipping instructions, payment method and any regional restrictions.
Why a brand channel can still be useful
Technical garments often have proprietary membranes, seam construction and care requirements that are difficult for a general marketplace to describe consistently. A brand-run channel can make product identification and material context clearer. That advantage is practical rather than a promise that every returned item has undergone a particular repair; rely on the current listing or program terms for the exact work performed.

Geartrade: best independent multi-brand consignment option
How the marketplace works
Geartrade operates as a used outdoor-gear marketplace and consignment service. Its categories include clothing, hiking and camping, ski and mountain-bike equipment. Instead of asking each seller to create a listing, Geartrade provides a shipping label, handles the listing process and presents the item to marketplace buyers.
Acceptance rules
Geartrade says submitted items should be fully functional, in good or better condition and generally less than five years old. “Generally” matters: age alone does not determine whether a product is safe or saleable, and the company may apply category-specific judgment. Clean, dry, complete gear with accurate descriptions has a better chance of meeting the stated standard than equipment with missing parts, hidden damage or unresolved odors.
Payout choices
Sellers can be paid through Venmo, PayPal or store credit. Venmo and PayPal are closer to a cash payout than retailer credit, while store credit may be useful if you plan another purchase on the marketplace. Review the current consignment terms for timing, fees and the amount you will receive after a sale; the available information does not establish one universal percentage for every category.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Unsold items
You can request the return of unsold items or choose donation. Make that decision before shipping so you understand what happens if the item does not find a buyer. A return request may involve conditions or deadlines in the current terms.
Choose Geartrade when
- You need brands that a single-manufacturer program will not accept.
- You prefer a marketplace that handles photography, listing and buyer-facing administration.
- You want a possible Venmo or PayPal payout instead of only store credit.
How to choose between the programs
If inventory breadth is your priority
Start with REI Re/Supply for a retailer-managed, multi-brand catalog. Geartrade is the alternative when you want consignment and more cash-like seller payouts. Both can expose you to one-off sizes and models, so availability is less predictable than browsing a new-product line.
If brand consistency is your priority
Use The North Face Renewed for The North Face items and ReGEAR/ReBIRD for Arc’teryx items. A brand-specific channel reduces the need to translate unfamiliar model names, but it also narrows the available selection and may limit your payout to brand-defined terms.

If seller value is your priority
Geartrade offers Venmo or PayPal as well as store credit. REI Re/Supply pays accepted trade-ins with an REI e-gift card. The North Face’s U.S. program uses $10, $30 or $50 credits. Patagonia Worn Wear and other brand channels use their own credit systems. Compare the credit’s usefulness to your actual buying habits rather than treating every dollar of credit as equivalent to cash.

If processing transparency is your priority
Worn Wear publishes the clearest sequence in this group: washing, inspection, authentication, condition grading and repairs when needed. Re/Supply publishes hand selection, inspection and four grades. The North Face publishes inspection, washing and tune-up. Geartrade publishes functional and condition requirements but is a consignment service rather than a single-brand refurbishment line. Arc’teryx’s current public details should be checked directly because the available information does not specify the full process.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Buying refurbished outdoor gear safely
1. Confirm the exact product
Record the model name, generation, size, gender or fit designation and any included accessories. A “jacket” listing may refer to an insulated piece, a shell or a hybrid layer with very different warmth and weather protection. For a product such as a Patagonia Nano Puff jacket, check whether the listing is a Hoody, jacket or vest and whether the hood, stuff sack and original insulation are present.
2. Read the condition statement literally
Use the program’s grade as a starting point, then inspect photographs and written notes for abrasion, stains, delamination, stretched elastic, worn zipper teeth, missing cord locks and repaired seams. “Well worn” can be an excellent value for casual use but a poor choice for a long, wet expedition if water resistance has declined.
3. Match wear to the product’s job
- Rain shells: look for peeling seam tape, bubbling face fabric and damage around shoulders or pack contact points.
- Insulated jackets: check for uneven or compressed fill, cold spots, torn baffles and a zipper that closes smoothly.
- Sleeping bags: verify temperature rating, loft, zipper function and whether the listed dimensions fit you.
- Backpacks: inspect hip-belt foam, shoulder-strap stitching, frame components and all adjustment hardware.
- Footwear: examine outsole wear, midsole cracking, heel collapse and interior odor; fit cannot be inferred from the brand name alone.
- Tents: confirm poles, stakes, rainfly, footprint and repair patches, then check fabric coating and seam condition.
4. Check buyer protection before paying
Returns, final-sale rules and defect coverage differ by listing, program and country. Read the current policy for the exact item, not a general statement found on another page. Pay particular attention to whether a used item can be returned for fit, whether a repair is covered and how long you have to report a problem.
5. Price the total purchase
Include shipping, taxes, required membership, replacement parts and likely cleaning. A discounted shell that needs seam-tape work may cost more than a better-condition listing. Conversely, a lightly worn backpack with all accessories can be a stronger value than a cheaper incomplete one.

How to sell, trade in or consign your gear
Prepare the item
- Wash or clean the product according to its care label and let it dry completely.
- Remove personal items, old trail food, dirt and loose debris from pockets and compartments.
- Gather detachable parts: hoods, straps, stuff sacks, poles, stakes, chargers or proprietary accessories.
- Test zippers, buckles, valves, closures, lights and adjustment systems.
- Photograph or note stains, repairs, abrasion and missing components so the receiving program is not surprised.
Select the channel
Use Worn Wear for eligible Patagonia gear when Patagonia credit and its guarantee matter. Use Re/Supply if you are an REI member and prefer an e-gift card. Use The North Face Renewed or ReGEAR/ReBIRD for the corresponding brand. Use Geartrade for eligible multi-brand gear when you want the service to handle the listing and you value Venmo or PayPal as payout options.
Package and document shipment
Follow the program’s label and packaging instructions, keep the tracking number and photograph the packed item. Do not send fuel, damaged batteries or other restricted materials unless the program explicitly accepts them. If a program offers a return of unsold gear, save the instructions and deadline before the item leaves your possession.
Environmental claims: what the evidence supports
Used gear can avoid the impacts of manufacturing a replacement, but the benefit depends on whether the second owner actually uses the item and how far it travels for processing and delivery. REI’s published estimate is that buying used typically avoids 50% or more of the CO2 emissions associated with buying new. That figure is an REI estimate and is not an independently verified lifecycle result for every product.
The strongest practical environmental strategy is therefore to keep a safe, functional product in use: buy an item that fits your needs, maintain it, repair it when sensible and pass it on when you no longer use it. Do not buy an unsuitable used item merely because its sticker price or estimated emissions look lower; a product that fails quickly can create another purchase and another shipment.
Decision guide

| You want many brands and common categories | REI Re/Supply | Inspected inventory, four grades and member trade-ins | Membership and e-gift-card payout |

| You need Arc’teryx technical equipment | Arc’teryx ReGEAR/ReBIRD | Official brand trade-in pathway | Current eligibility, geography, inventory and payout |
| You want independent consignment | Geartrade | Multi-brand categories, free labels, managed listings and Venmo/PayPal options | Age, condition, fees, payout timing and unsold-item terms |
| You need Patagonia-specific repairs and assurance | Patagonia Worn Wear | Brand catalog, refurbishment sequence and Ironclad Guarantee | Item eligibility and the credit’s permitted uses |
Bottom line
Choose REI Re/Supply for the broadest inspected, multi-brand alternative. Choose The North Face Renewed or Arc’teryx ReGEAR/ReBIRD when the product’s brand and technical construction are central to your decision. Choose Geartrade when consignment convenience and a possible Venmo or PayPal payout outweigh the consistency of a retailer’s catalog.
