Elicit is the clearest documented alternative when a lab primarily needs literature discovery, systematic-review screening, evidence extraction and cited research reports. Rosalind is broader: OpenAI describes GPT-Rosalind as a life-sciences system for genomics, protein and sequence analysis, medicinal chemistry, literature synthesis, wet-lab troubleshooting and experiment planning. A lab should therefore pilot Elicit for review-centric work, while retaining Rosalind in the evaluation if its decision depends on biological data, specialist databases or experiment workflows.
What you are actually choosing
This is not a simple feature-for-feature software swap. The two products address overlapping but different parts of a research process.

- Choose Elicit first when the bottleneck is finding papers, screening a large evidence set, extracting structured data and producing a report with sentence-level citations.
- Keep GPT-Rosalind in the pilot when researchers need integrated reasoning across omics, sequences, proteins, chemistry, literature and experimental design.
- Test both against your own data before changing platforms. A literature agent can be excellent at evidence synthesis yet still fail to connect to the biological databases, internal datasets or laboratory systems your group relies on.
OpenAI’s Academic Plan terms and Elicit’s product limits are current as accessed on October 18, 2026. Seat counts, eligibility, usage limits, pricing and governance controls can change, so verify them immediately before procurement.
Rosalind’s scope and the Academic Plan
What GPT-Rosalind is designed to do
OpenAI positions GPT-Rosalind as a broad life-sciences research system. Its stated capabilities include:
#1 Best Overall
- [Ultra-Lightweight Ear Buds Designed for Small Ears] Each earbud weighs only 3.7g and features a compact, ergonomic in-ear design made especially for small ears. Secure, low-profile, and comfortable for workouts, all-day wear or overnight sleeping. The ultra-slim profile sits flush in your ear with no hard edges poking or rubbing, so you can even sleep on your side without discomfort.
- [Immersive Stereo Sound with TOZO OrigX Technology] TOZO OrigX tuning delivers clear vocals, balanced mids, and natural stereo sound for music, podcasts, and videos.
- [Long Battery Life for Daily Use] Get up to 7 hours of playtime on a single charge, with up to 32 hours total using the charging case—ideal for workdays, commuting, and extended listening sessions.
- [Bluetooth 5.3 & Stable Connection] Bluetooth 5.3 provides fast pairing, stable wireless performance, and reduced dropouts as you move around home or office.
- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Target research and target-biology investigation.
- Genomics and sequencing analysis.
- Protein and sequence analysis.
- Medicinal-chemistry work.
- Literature synthesis.
- Wet-lab troubleshooting.
- Experiment planning.
OpenAI says the model is especially useful for early discovery and hypothesis generation, understanding mechanisms, synthesising literature and interpreting omics results. That breadth is the main reason a literature-only product should not be assumed to replace it.
Who can use the Academic Plan
Eligible labs at U.S. universities can receive up to 30 Business Standard seats at $0 per user per month for up to 12 months. A principal investigator or designated lab lead applies. If the university already has an Enterprise agreement, the lab uses the university’s Enterprise access process instead.
The offer includes access to commercially available frontier OpenAI models subject to usage limits, plus GPT-Rosalind after trusted-access approval. It does not include API access or API credits. OpenAI states that research data shared through the Academic Plan is not used to train models by default.
Those conditions matter for a replacement decision. A lab outside the United States, a group requiring API automation, or a team that cannot obtain trusted access may not be able to use the plan in the same way as an eligible U.S. university lab.
How to interpret the performance claim
OpenAI reports that “On LABBench2, a benchmark measuring performance on a range of research tasks such as literature retrieval, database access, sequence manipulation and protocol design, GPT‑Rosalind outperforms GPT‑5.4 on 6 out of 11 tasks.” This is an OpenAI-reported evaluation, not an independent purchasing conclusion. It indicates the type of work Rosalind is intended to cover; it does not establish that it will outperform every alternative on your lab’s protocols or datasets.
Researchers quoted by OpenAI describe a similar breadth. Dr. Mathieu Bourdenx of Bourdenx Lab says GPT models help him move from literature exploration to refining experiments and computational approaches, leaving more time to explore ideas. The Zhao Lab at UCSF reports using GPT-Rosalind with PubChem and NCBI tools to gather physicochemical parameters for ten drugs while distinguishing predicted from experimentally measured values. These are user statements published by OpenAI, not controlled comparative trials.

Why Elicit is the strongest documented alternative
Literature discovery at large scale
Elicit’s research agent gathers evidence across scientific databases, academic journals, public data sources and uploaded documents. Its product page says the search covers 138 million academic papers and 545,000 clinical trials. It can find up to 1,000 relevant papers and analyze up to 20,000 data points at once.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a lab drowning in candidate papers, those limits define a practical workflow: search broadly, narrow the set with explicit screening criteria, then extract the fields needed for a review or briefing. The useful output is not just a list of links; Elicit says it can create cited reports, tables, figures, analyses and slides.
Systematic-review support
Elicit says it can automate screening and data extraction while partially supporting search and report generation. It also reports that researchers achieve up to 80% time savings using Elicit for systematic reviews. That is a vendor-reported figure and should be treated as a hypothesis for your pilot, not a guaranteed saving.
Sentence-level citations are central to the product’s positioning: AI-generated claims are linked to supporting passages so a reviewer can inspect the evidence rather than accept an uncited summary. The Library and Routines features are intended to let teams reuse sources and monitor new research over time.
Evidence quality and the published case study
Elicit reports one customer case in which 1,502 of 1,511 data points were extracted correctly, a 99.4% accuracy rate. Because this is a vendor case-study result, it should not be treated as an independent benchmark. Re-run the extraction on your own inclusion criteria, study designs and data fields, and have a domain expert audit the output.

When Elicit can replace Rosalind
Review-centric lab questions
Elicit is a credible replacement candidate when most projects follow this pattern:
- Define a question and inclusion or exclusion criteria.
- Search a large scientific literature.
- Screen titles, abstracts or full texts.
- Extract consistent fields into a table.
- Trace each claim to a source passage.
- Produce a brief, evidence table or presentation for the group.
Examples include a systematic review of intervention outcomes, a map of biomarker studies, a comparison of assay methods or a weekly evidence brief for a principal investigator. In these cases, a purpose-built literature workflow can be simpler and more auditable than a general scientific assistant.
Conditions that make the substitution safer
- Your conclusions can be supported by the papers and public sources available to the tool.
- The lab does not need sequence manipulation, omics interpretation or chemistry calculations inside the same environment.
- Researchers can export and preserve the search strategy, screening decisions, extracted passages and final citations.
- A subject-matter expert will verify critical inclusions, exclusions and numerical extractions.
- Your information-governance review accepts the way uploaded documents and internal data are handled.
When Elicit is not a full Rosalind replacement
Integrated biological analysis
If the research question requires moving from a paper to a sequence, protein, target, compound or omics dataset and then reasoning about an experiment, Elicit’s documented literature features do not establish equivalent coverage. Test the actual databases, file formats, calculations and tool calls your lab uses.
Experiment planning and wet-lab troubleshooting
OpenAI explicitly lists experiment planning and wet-lab troubleshooting for GPT-Rosalind. Elicit’s documented emphasis is evidence gathering and reporting. It may inform a protocol discussion, but the available product description does not establish that it can replace a system designed for planning or troubleshooting experiments.
Internal systems and governance
A replacement must fit more than a researcher’s browser. Confirm whether the candidate connects to internal datasets, laboratory information systems, approved databases and APIs; whether administrators can control named seats and approvals; how retention works; whether data is used for training; and how regulated or sensitive data is handled. The Rosalind Academic Plan specifically excludes API access and API credits, while Elicit’s enterprise controls and pricing should be verified directly.
Run a two-stage lab pilot
Stage one: establish the review baseline
Use Elicit on a completed or well-understood literature task before asking it to replace anything. Select a question for which the lab already knows the key papers and expected data fields.

- Write the protocol. Record the research question, databases, date range, inclusion and exclusion rules, outcome fields and acceptable evidence types.
- Create a gold set. Have two researchers independently identify a representative set of relevant and irrelevant papers, then reconcile disagreements.
- Run discovery and screening. Record how many candidate papers are found, how many are screened, how long each stage takes and where reviewers override the tool.
- Audit extraction. Compare every critical field with the source passage. Track false inclusions, false exclusions, missing values, unit errors and conflation of predicted with measured results.
- Check citations. Require sentence-level or source-linked support for claims in the final report. Preserve the underlying passages and search settings.
- Measure the human work. Count researcher hours, review meetings, correction rounds and time to a publication-ready table—not just the time to generate a draft.
This stage answers whether Elicit improves your evidence workflow without pretending that a vendor-reported 80% time saving or 99.4% extraction result will occur in your domain.
Stage two: test the broader science workflow
Keep GPT-Rosalind in the same evaluation if your lab’s work extends beyond papers. Use representative tasks such as:
- Interpreting a small omics result and identifying plausible follow-up questions.
- Comparing protein or sequence variants and checking the provenance of each conclusion.
- Collecting physicochemical parameters for compounds while labelling predicted and experimental values separately.
- Turning a mechanistic hypothesis into an experiment plan with controls, risks and decision points.
- Troubleshooting a failed wet-lab procedure using the lab’s approved documentation.
For every task, save the input, tool calls, output, citations, corrections and final expert-approved answer. Do not score a fluent narrative as a success unless the underlying values and references are correct.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Score both tools against the same criteria
| Criterion | Questions to score | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Scientific scope | Does it cover literature only, or also genomics, proteins, sequences, chemistry and experiments? | Completed representative tasks and documented failures |
| Evidence traceability | Can a reviewer reach the exact source, passage, extracted value and transformation behind each claim? | Exported citations, passages, tables and audit notes |
| Data and tool integration | Can it use the scientific databases, uploaded documents, internal datasets, APIs and laboratory systems you require? | Connection tests, file-format results and permission logs |
| Collaboration and governance | Are named seats, administrator controls, approval flows, retention, training-use settings and regulated-data handling acceptable? | Written answers from the vendor and your security review |
| Workflow depth | Does it support search, screening, extraction, synthesis, coding, analysis and experiment planning at the needed depth? | Task-level scorecards and reviewer comments |
| Economics | What are the free-period limits, seat counts, usage caps, institutional terms, API charges and renewal costs? | Current written quote or plan terms, dated for approval |
Weight the criteria according to the lab’s mission. A group publishing evidence reviews may give traceability and screening more weight than experiment planning. A translational or discovery group may do the opposite.
Governance questions to answer before uploading data
- Eligibility and approval: Is the lab at a U.S. university, and has the PI or designated lead completed the required application and trusted-access process?
- Data use: Does the applicable plan state whether research data is used for model training? OpenAI says Academic Plan data is not used for training by default; document the exact current terms.
- API dependency: Does an automated pipeline require API access or credits? The Rosalind Academic Plan does not include them.
- Retention and deletion: How long are prompts, uploaded papers, extracted tables and generated reports retained, and who can delete them?
- Access control: Can the lab remove a departing researcher, restrict projects and review administrative activity?
- Sensitive material: Are unpublished results, identifiable data, controlled compounds or regulated records permitted under the institution’s policy?
- Reproducibility: Can the team preserve model version, prompt or routine settings, source list and output so another researcher can repeat the analysis?
Common pilot failures and how to correct them
Counting generated papers instead of useful evidence
A large result set is not automatically a good one. Define relevance and quality criteria before searching, then measure precision, missed key papers and reviewer correction time.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Best Value
Mixing predictions with measurements
Keep predicted, simulated and experimentally measured values in separate fields. The Zhao Lab example specifically highlights the importance of this distinction when collecting drug physicochemical parameters.
Testing on an easy question
Include a difficult task with ambiguous terminology, conflicting findings, nonstandard units and a known set of important negative results. Easy demonstrations hide the failure modes that matter in publication work.
Ignoring the handoff to the laboratory
Document how a report becomes a decision, protocol or dataset in your existing process. A tool that produces an attractive summary but cannot export approved tables, preserve provenance or connect to required systems may add a new manual bottleneck.

Pick Elicit as the first pilot when
- The lab’s immediate goal is a rigorous, citation-rich literature review.
- Screening and structured extraction consume most researcher time.
- Sentence-level evidence and reusable reports are more important than sequence or chemistry tooling.
- You can validate outputs against a gold set and meet institutional data-governance requirements.
Keep Rosalind in the pilot when
- Projects combine literature with genomics, sequencing, protein, sequence or medicinal-chemistry work.
- Researchers need wet-lab troubleshooting or experiment planning in the same workflow.
- The lab wants tool-supported biological reasoning rather than a literature-only assistant.
- The U.S. university eligibility, seat allowance and trusted-access requirements fit your institution.
Use both during transition when
Literature review is a large independent workload, but the lab also has discovery projects that depend on integrated biological reasoning. Elicit can serve as the evidence-synthesis layer while Rosalind is evaluated on the scientific tasks Elicit is not documented to cover. A shared review protocol and common audit records prevent the two pilots from producing incomparable claims.
Bottom-line procurement recommendation
Run a two-stage pilot rather than declaring a universal winner. Start with Elicit if the replacement objective is a defensible literature-review workflow: broad search, screening, structured extraction and cited reports. Keep GPT-Rosalind under evaluation for integrated life-sciences reasoning, omics interpretation, protein or sequence analysis, medicinal chemistry, wet-lab troubleshooting and experiment planning. Approve a platform only after it passes representative lab tasks, evidence-traceability checks and your institution’s governance review.
