Best alternatives to OneDrive for personal cloud storage in 2026

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

There is no single best OneDrive replacement. Choose Google One if your files, Gmail and Google Photos already live together; choose iCloud+ for an Apple-centered household; choose Dropbox when cross-device syncing, sharing and file recovery matter most; and shortlist Proton Drive or Sync.com when provider-stated end-to-end encryption is your priority. Keep Microsoft 365 Personal in the calculation if you use Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Outlook, because it bundles 1 TB of cloud storage with those applications.

The figures below are provider-listed snapshots checked in October 2026, primarily in US dollars. Taxes, country, currency, promotions, billing cadence and available features can change, so verify the offer shown for your account before moving a large archive.

At-a-glance comparison

Service Published plan facts Best fit
Google One 15 GB free account storage; paid tiers shown include 100 GB, 200 GB, 400 GB, 2 TB, 5 TB and higher AI-plan storage. Prices vary by locale; the page displayed a Japanese locale when checked. People already using Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos
iCloud+ 50 GB — $0.99/month; 200 GB — $2.99/month; 2 TB — $9.99/month; 6 TB — $29.99/month; 12 TB — $59.99/month. Households built around Apple devices and services
Dropbox Individual Standard: 2 TB — $9.99/month. Cross-device synchronization, sharing and a defined deleted-file recovery window
Proton Drive 5 GB free; Drive Plus 200 GB — $4.99/month. People seeking a privacy-focused service with a provider-stated end-to-end encryption model
Sync.com The provider lists access on Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and the web, and describes the service as end-to-end encrypted. A dependable current US consumer price was not captured. People who need broad device coverage and provider-stated privacy controls
Microsoft 365 Basic: 100 GB — $1.99/month or $19.99/year. Personal: 1 TB — $9.99/month or $99.99/year, with Microsoft 365 apps. Office users who may get more value from a bundle than from storage alone

These are fit judgments from each provider’s published plan information, not a measured speed ranking. No independent upload-speed, migration or service-trial comparison is established here.

How to choose an alternative

Start with the devices and accounts you already use

Cloud storage is most convenient when it matches your existing sign-ins, photo library and desktop clients. A switch that saves a few dollars can create daily friction if your phone, computer and collaboration tools expect a different ecosystem.

#1 Best Overall
Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400) | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  • If Gmail and Google Photos are central to your routine, Google One keeps those services and Drive under one storage pool.
  • If most household devices are iPhones, iPads or Macs, iCloud+ is designed around that Apple environment.
  • If you work on Windows and macOS, share folders with people using different platforms, or regularly move files between devices, a synchronization-first service such as Dropbox may be easier to operate.
  • If your first requirement is that the provider describes files as end-to-end encrypted, Proton Drive and Sync.com deserve a closer look, with the qualification that these are provider statements rather than independent audit results.
  • If Office applications are part of your normal work, compare the complete Microsoft 365 subscription with a storage-only plan instead of treating the 1 TB as the only benefit.

Check what counts against the quota

Not all storage allowances are isolated file buckets. Google says one account allowance is shared by Drive, Gmail and Google Photos. A large photo library or years of email can therefore consume space you expected to reserve for documents. Apple’s family-oriented plans can be shared with other household members, so the practical capacity depends on everyone’s usage. Before migrating, measure your current files and also inspect email attachments, photos, device backups and shared data that may draw from the same allowance.

Separate file sharing from family-plan sharing

A family storage plan and a shared project folder solve different problems. Family sharing allocates subscription capacity among household accounts; it does not automatically grant every person access to every document. For work or community projects, check whether the service gives you the folder permissions, link controls and collaboration behavior you need. Do not assume that a plan advertised as shareable provides identical editing or administration features across all devices.

Treat privacy language precisely

“End-to-end encrypted” is a security-model claim, not a universal quality score. Proton says Drive files are end-to-end encrypted and describes the storage as inaccessible to Proton. Sync.com also describes its service as end-to-end encrypted and says it does not track, share or sell app-usage data. Those statements come from the providers cited above; they are not an independent security evaluation. Review account-recovery options, sharing behavior and the provider’s current technical documentation before placing sensitive material in any service.

Find out how recovery works before deleting the old account

Synchronization is not the same as backup. A deletion or unwanted edit can propagate to every connected device, so you need a documented restore or version-history process. Dropbox’s individual plan page explicitly lists 30 days to restore deleted files. The other plan pages cited here do not establish a comparable recovery period, so confirm their current version-history and deleted-file policies before relying on them as your only copy.

Compare the total annual cost, not just the monthly headline

Use the same billing period for every candidate. Microsoft’s US page displays both monthly and annual prices for Basic and Personal, while several other provider pages show a monthly figure without an equivalent annual offer in the captured information. Multiply a monthly price by twelve only as an annualized comparison; it is not proof that the provider offers that exact annual bill. Add taxes and consider whether bundled applications, family sharing or a shared email-and-photo quota change the value for your household.

Provider-by-provider guidance

Google One: the natural fit for Google users

Google One is the most seamless alternative when Gmail, Google Photos and Google Drive are already part of your daily workflow. The account-level quota covers all three services, so one subscription can solve a full inbox, a growing camera roll and ordinary documents without maintaining separate storage accounts.

Rank #2
Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black
  • Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Google lists a free account allowance and paid tiers ranging from smaller document-focused options through multi-terabyte plans, with higher storage attached to some AI plans. The page checked for this comparison rendered in Japanese, so plan names, currency and local prices must be confirmed in your own country. Google also says a plan can be shared with up to five other people, which is useful for a household but means everyone’s usage draws from the shared allowance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Google One when convenience inside Google services matters more than having a storage product that is independent of email and photos. Before switching, check how much of the quota is already consumed by Gmail attachments and Photos originals; otherwise the apparent replacement capacity may be smaller than expected.

iCloud+: the strongest Apple-household fit

iCloud+ is built for people whose primary devices and services come from Apple. It can keep device photos, documents and other iCloud data in the same account ecosystem, reducing the number of separate sync clients and logins in an Apple household.

Apple lists five paid capacities, from a small personal tier through a 12 TB option, with the monthly US prices shown in the table above. Plans can be shared with up to five other family members. That arrangement is attractive when several Apple accounts need storage, but the family group should agree on how the shared capacity will be used.

Do not call iCloud+ a universal cross-platform replacement without checking every device you own. If your workflow includes non-Apple computers, Android phones or collaborators outside the Apple ecosystem, confirm client support and sharing behavior first. iCloud+ is usually the right answer for an Apple-first household, not automatically for a mixed-device team.

Dropbox: a practical synchronization and recovery choice

Dropbox remains a strong option when the job is straightforward folder synchronization across devices and easy sharing with other people. Its individual Standard plan lists 2 TB at the monthly price shown above, and the plan page describes access across devices.

Rank #3
Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black
  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

The same page gives individual users 30 days to restore deleted files. That explicit recovery window is important if you accidentally remove a folder or need to undo a change. Treat it as a recovery aid, not a substitute for a separate offline or second-cloud backup: a synchronized deletion can still affect every connected copy.

Be careful when reading the Dropbox page because team plans appear alongside individual plans. Team storage, administration and pricing are not interchangeable with the individual Standard offer. Select the individual plan when you are replacing personal storage, and verify the restore period and sharing controls shown for the exact plan you purchase.

Proton Drive: a privacy-led option with a clear small free tier

Proton Drive is worth considering when minimizing provider access to file contents is more important than matching a large mainstream ecosystem. Proton lists a 5 GB free allowance and a 200 GB Drive Plus tier at the monthly price shown above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Proton says files on Drive are end-to-end encrypted and describes the storage as inaccessible to Proton. That is the provider’s description of its design; it should not be presented as an independently audited result. You should still evaluate how you will share files, recover an account and maintain a second copy of irreplaceable data.

Proton Drive makes the most sense for a privacy-conscious personal archive, documents that do not need deep integration with Gmail or Apple Photos, or a secondary destination for particularly sensitive files. Confirm current desktop and mobile behavior for your devices before moving your entire library.

Sync.com: broad platform coverage with provider-stated encryption

Sync.com’s plan page lists access through Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and a browser, which covers the major personal-device combinations. It describes the service as end-to-end encrypted and says the company does not track, share or sell app-usage data.

Rank #4
Seagate Portable 4TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0, 1-Year Rescue | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal

The cited page did not provide a dependable current US consumer price for this comparison, so obtain the live offer for your country before comparing it with the priced plans above. The encryption and data-use descriptions are vendor claims, not an independent audit. Ask the same practical questions you would ask of any provider: how links can be revoked, how deleted files are restored, what version history is available and how account recovery works.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sync.com is a sensible shortlist candidate when device coverage and a privacy-oriented policy are more important than belonging to a large email, photo or office suite. It is less suitable if your decision depends on a precisely known price or a documented recovery window that the plan page does not show.

Microsoft 365: the value benchmark for Office users

Microsoft 365 belongs in this comparison because many people buy cloud storage as part of a productivity subscription. Microsoft’s US page lists a Basic plan with 100 GB and a Personal plan with 1 TB plus Microsoft 365 applications. Both monthly and annual prices are shown for those plans in the table.

If you regularly use Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Outlook, the bundle can provide more total value than replacing OneDrive with a storage-only service. If you never open the included applications, compare the subscription strictly on storage, sharing and recovery features instead. A storage-only comparison can make the bundle look expensive or cheap depending on which benefits you actually use.

Microsoft 365 is therefore a benchmark rather than a recommendation for everyone. Keep it when the applications are productive tools you would otherwise pay for; consider a different provider when you want a different privacy model, a non-Microsoft ecosystem or a simpler standalone storage account.

A careful migration plan

Move by copying and verifying, not by deleting the old account first. The following sequence works regardless of which provider you choose.

  1. Inventory your data. Record the size and location of documents, photos, videos, email exports, shared folders and device backups. Mark files that must retain their original folder structure, timestamps or sharing permissions.
  2. Measure the real quota. Check whether email, photos or family members consume the new service’s allowance. Leave headroom for future growth instead of selecting a plan that is already nearly full.
  3. Test the new account with a small, unimportant folder. Install the relevant desktop or mobile client, upload a few representative files and check download, rename, offline and sharing behavior on every device you depend on.
  4. Keep the source intact. Copy your OneDrive data to a local drive or another independent destination before the main upload. Do not use a move operation that removes the only verified copy.
  5. Upload in batches. Start with documents, then photos and video, and finally large archives. Batching makes failures easier to identify and lets you confirm that the destination has enough room.
  6. Verify the result. Compare folder counts and sizes, open representative files, check several large videos and confirm that dates and filenames survived. For especially valuable archives, use a checksum comparison or another independent integrity check.
  7. Recreate sharing deliberately. Existing links and permissions generally do not follow a file to a different provider. Send new links only after testing them in a private browser window and confirm that recipients have the intended access.
  8. Configure recovery and a second copy. Learn the new service’s deleted-file and version-history controls, then keep an offline or separate-cloud copy of irreplaceable data.
  9. Run both accounts during a verification period. Continue using the old account until new uploads, phone photos and shared folders have behaved correctly for at least one normal work cycle. Only then downgrade or cancel the old subscription.

Common failure modes to avoid

Choosing by headline capacity alone

A larger number is not automatically more useful. A Google quota shared with Gmail and Photos, or an Apple family plan shared across several people, can fill faster than a smaller storage-only account used by one person. Estimate actual consumption and growth first.

Assuming every service has the same recovery tools

Dropbox publicly lists a 30-day deleted-file restoration period for its individual plan. Do not transfer that expectation to another provider without checking its current documentation. Keep a separate backup while you learn the new service’s rollback behavior.

Confusing a privacy claim with a guarantee

Provider descriptions of end-to-end encryption and data-use practices are useful decision inputs, but they are not independent certification. Read the current security documentation, understand how account recovery affects encryption, and avoid storing the only copy of critical material anywhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Forgetting non-file data

Mail attachments, photo libraries, device backups and shared folders may be part of the old workflow even when they are not visible in a desktop sync folder. Make a checklist of those sources before canceling the old account.

Comparing a personal plan with a team plan

Dropbox’s page displays team offerings alongside its individual Standard plan. Team storage, administration and billing can differ substantially. Always compare the exact personal tier with the exact personal tier from another provider.

Ignoring currency and billing cadence

The displayed figures are snapshots, mostly in US dollars. Local taxes, exchange rates, promotional periods and annual billing can change the amount charged. Confirm the final checkout price and renewal terms in your region.

A simple decision path

  1. Mostly Apple devices? Start with iCloud+ and verify that every non-Apple device or collaborator you need is supported.
  2. Mostly Gmail, Google Photos and Google Drive? Start with Google One, then calculate how much of the shared quota those services already consume.
  3. Need neutral cross-device synchronization and a clear restore window? Examine Dropbox’s individual plan and distinguish it from the team offers.
  4. Privacy model comes first? Compare Proton Drive and Sync.com, treating their encryption and data-use descriptions as provider claims and checking current recovery controls.
  5. Use Office applications every week? Price Microsoft 365 Personal as a complete bundle before paying for a separate storage service.
  6. No clear winner? Choose the service that fits your devices, leaves quota headroom and gives you a recovery process you can test before migration.

Final recommendation

For most readers, the best alternative is the one that removes the most friction from the services they already use. Google One and iCloud+ win on ecosystem alignment, Dropbox on practical synchronization and documented 30-day recovery, Proton Drive and Sync.com on provider-stated privacy positioning, and Microsoft 365 on bundled productivity value. Make a verified copy before switching, confirm the exact local price and quota, and keep an independent backup after the move.
