Best Alternatives to Meta Muse for AI Agents That Take Actions Online (2026)

There is no single, like-for-like replacement for Meta Muse. If you want an agent that operates websites in your existing browser, Claude in Chrome and Google Gemini Auto Browse are the closest consumer options. If you are building software, Meta Muse Spark’s computer-use API and Google’s Gemini API Computer Use provide action loops, but you must supply the computer, browser driver, screenshots, safety controls, and recovery logic yourself. OpenAI’s Computer-Using Agent (CUA) description is useful background, but its January 2025 research-preview announcement does not establish current product availability or eligibility.

The decisive difference is where the work runs. Muse is described by Meta as a personal agent with a persistent, isolated cloud computer that can continue after you close the app. The browser alternatives run through Chrome on your device, while the APIs are developer components rather than hosted personal assistants.

What Meta Muse does—and why the distinction matters

Meta describes Muse as a personal agent that can work across the web and connected applications. It makes a plan, operates its own browser inside a persistent isolated Linux computer, and can continue a task after you close the app. Meta’s September 2026 launch announcement lists email, travel booking, form completion, negotiation, and online purchasing as examples. The agent may pause and ask for approval before consequential actions such as sending an email or making a purchase.

That managed computer is the feature most alternatives do not duplicate. A browser extension or Chrome feature can act in tabs, but it does not automatically provide a vendor-managed machine that remains available when your laptop is asleep. Conversely, a computer-use API can be used to build that kind of service, but the developer—not the API provider—must host and operate the environment.

An Associated Press report described Muse as available in the United States to adults 18 and older at launch on September 8, 2026. That is a launch snapshot, not a guarantee of its availability on every account or in every country today.

At-a-glance comparison

Option Best fit Where actions run Scope documented Important limitation
Claude in Chrome People who want an agent to work across browser tabs Chrome on the user’s computer Browser tasks across tabs; conversations can continue in Claude applications Anthropic says Claude Desktop is needed for local files or other applications; no evidence here of Muse’s persistent cloud computer
Google Gemini Auto Browse Chrome users with multi-step web tasks The local device running Chrome Multi-step tasks in Chrome; permission-based use of saved Password Manager logins Chrome and the device must remain awake and running
Meta Muse Spark computer-use API Developers building a custom computer-use agent Your browser or desktop environment Task and screenshot in; structured actions out; you execute actions and return a new screenshot Not a turnkey consumer service; you own the driver, safeguards, logging, validation, and recovery
Google Gemini API Computer Use Developers who want a documented screenshot/action loop Your client-side environment Screenshot submission, action execution, safety checks, and confirmation when needed Requires an action runner and an environment that your application controls
OpenAI CUA/Operator description Readers evaluating screen-based agent concepts Screen, mouse, and keyboard interaction as described in the preview Requests confirmation for sensitive actions The source is a January 2025 research preview; current name, availability, and plan eligibility are not established here

Choose by execution model before choosing a brand

Start with the environment, because it determines what the agent can do when your attention moves elsewhere.

  • Need a browser helper while you are present? Choose a Chrome-centered option. You keep the session, tabs, and credentials on your own machine and can intervene immediately.
  • Need a task to keep running after you close the app? Muse’s documented persistent computer is the relevant model. The browser alternatives in this comparison should not be assumed to provide the same persistence.
  • Need an agent inside your own product? Use a computer-use API. You gain control over hosting, policy, audit logs, and recovery, at the cost of implementing the entire execution loop.
  • Need broad desktop or app automation? Verify the specific product’s scope. Claude in Chrome is documented around browser tabs, while the API options can be connected to a broader environment only if you build and secure that environment.

Also check account, country, age, plan, and usage eligibility at the time you sign up. These details change faster than the underlying interaction model, and a complete current price comparison is not established for the options above.

Claude in Chrome: the browser-first alternative

What it can do

Anthropic says users can give Claude tasks in Chrome across tabs and continue conversations in Claude applications. That makes it a practical choice for work such as gathering information from several pages, entering data into a web form, or moving through a multi-page browser process while you supervise the session.

The documented boundary is important: Anthropic says Claude Desktop is needed when the task involves local files or other applications. In other words, do not infer that the Chrome experience can freely operate your desktop, read arbitrary files, or control native applications. Those are separate capabilities with separate permission implications.

A safe first run

  1. Open the task in Chrome. Use a fresh tab set or a dedicated browser profile so unrelated personal sessions are not exposed.
  2. State the goal and stopping points. Describe the desired outcome, the sites it may use, and actions that require your approval. For example, permit research and form preparation but require a pause before submission.
  3. Watch each tab change. Confirm that the agent is on the expected domain and is using the intended account before allowing it to continue.
  4. Review every consequential step. Treat sending, purchasing, account changes, and irreversible submissions as manual checkpoints, even if the agent offers an automatic mode.
  5. End the session deliberately. Close the task, revoke any temporary access you granted, and check the resulting account or order directly.

Where it differs from Muse

Claude in Chrome is browser-centered and tied to the computer running Chrome. The available description does not establish a persistent, isolated cloud computer that continues while your device is offline. It is therefore a strong fit for supervised browser work, not a proven one-for-one replacement for Muse’s personal-agent workflow.

Google Gemini Auto Browse: multi-step Chrome work on your device

Capabilities and requirements

Google’s help documentation describes Auto Browse as handling multi-step tasks in Chrome. It can use saved Password Manager logins when you grant permission. That permission model is useful for reducing repeated typing, but it also means you should inspect which account and credential the browser is offering before the agent proceeds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The execution requirement is explicit: the local device and Chrome must remain awake and running. A sleeping laptop, closed browser, lost network connection, or interrupted session can stop the task. This is the opposite of a persistent cloud computer that continues independently of your foreground device.

Operational checklist

  1. Prepare Chrome. Sign in only to the services required for the task and close unrelated tabs.
  2. Describe the multi-step objective. Include the final result, permitted sites, and actions that must wait for confirmation.
  3. Approve credential use selectively. Allow a saved login only when the account and destination are correct; do not treat a password-manager prompt as proof that the requested action is safe.
  4. Keep the machine active. Prevent sleep for the duration of the run and keep Chrome in the foreground or otherwise available to the feature.
  5. Verify completion outside the agent’s narrative. Check the site’s confirmation page, account history, or sent-item record yourself.

Best use cases

Auto Browse is most appropriate when you are already at the computer and want help with a chain of browser steps. It is less suitable for unattended work, overnight tasks, or processes that must survive a laptop shutdown. The evidence available here does not establish a current price, plan limit, or worldwide rollout.

Meta Muse Spark computer-use API: build the managed experience yourself

How the action loop works

Meta’s computer-use documentation describes an API that returns screen-based actions. Your application sends a task and screenshot, receives structured actions, executes them in a browser or desktop environment, captures a new screenshot, and sends that screenshot back for the next decision.

His behavior isn’t fully predictable. He has his own ideas, which makes him feel truly alive.
  1. Provision the environment. Supply the browser or desktop, a driver capable of mouse and keyboard actions, and the accounts the workflow is allowed to use.
  2. Capture the current screen. Send the task context and an up-to-date screenshot to the model.
  3. Validate the returned action. Check coordinates, URLs, focus, and policy before allowing a click, keystroke, navigation, upload, or other operation.
  4. Execute through your driver. Perform the approved action, then capture the resulting screen.
  5. Loop until a verified terminal state. Stop on success, an error, a policy violation, or a request for human approval. Log each screenshot, action, and decision.

The API does not supply the surrounding product. The developer must implement prompt-injection defenses, high-risk-action handling, credential isolation, confirmation screens, logging, validation, retries, and recovery when a page changes. That control is valuable for a business system, but it is engineering work rather than a consumer alternative you can simply open and use.

When it is the right choice

Use this route when you need a custom agent embedded in an internal tool, support workflow, or automation platform and can operate a controlled browser environment. It is a poor fit if you want a ready-made personal assistant with no infrastructure responsibility.

Google Gemini API Computer Use: a similar developer pattern

Google documents a computer-use loop in which the application submits screenshots, executes the resulting actions, and applies safety checks and confirmation when needed. The architectural decision is the same as with Meta’s API: your application owns the action runner and the environment.

Implementation responsibilities

  • Maintain a clean browser or desktop session and limit which accounts it can reach.
  • Translate model actions into real input events and verify that the expected page changed.
  • Require a human checkpoint for purchases, messages, account recovery, permissions, and other high-impact operations.
  • Detect prompt injection, unexpected domains, CAPTCHA challenges, and page-layout changes.
  • Record an audit trail that connects the task, screenshot, action, result, and person who approved it.
  • Provide a stop control and a recovery path when an action fails or the model becomes uncertain.

These APIs can support a broader workflow than a browser-only assistant, but only if you build the connectors and policy layer. Their existence should not be presented as proof that Google is offering a hosted personal computer equivalent to Muse.

OpenAI’s CUA and Operator description: useful context, not a current buying recommendation

OpenAI’s January 2025 article describes a screen-based system that interacts through screenshots, a mouse, and a keyboard. It says the system requests confirmation for sensitive actions, including entering login details or responding to CAPTCHA forms.

The same announcement reported 38.1% on OSWorld and 58.1% on WebArena. Those figures describe OpenAI’s system at that time; they are not a current head-to-head test against Muse, Claude in Chrome, or Gemini Auto Browse. The announcement was a research preview and does not establish the current product name, availability, or plan eligibility. Use it to understand the interaction pattern, not to select a service based on an outdated score.

Permissions and safety: questions to answer for every agent

Any agent that can act in your accounts deserves the same scrutiny as a human operator with delegated access. Meta says Muse uses fine-grained action permissions, separates the browser broker from the agent, applies classifiers for prompt injection and high-risk actions, and can pause while you take control or stored credentials fill a form. Meta also says purchases prompt for human approval. These are vendor-described safeguards, not independent proof that every task will be safe or reliable.

OpenAI’s CUA description likewise says sensitive actions require confirmation. A confirmation dialog reduces risk only when it shows the real destination and consequence and you have time to inspect it.

Question What to verify before granting access
Which accounts can it reach? List the exact services, profiles, and connected applications. Remove unrelated sessions.
Can permissions be narrowed? Prefer read-only or draft access until the workflow is proven. Check whether write, send, purchase, and settings actions are separately controlled.
When does it ask? Confirm that sending messages, buying, changing security settings, sharing data, and entering credentials have explicit approval gates.
Where does it run? Determine whether the task executes on your device, in a vendor-managed computer, or in infrastructure you operate. Each model changes data exposure and availability.
Can you take over? Look for a visible pause, stop, and handoff control. Test it before running a valuable task.
What login methods work? Check support for password managers, passkeys, multifactor authentication, CAPTCHA, and federated sign-in. Never assume a documented browser action can complete every login flow.

Reliability and benchmark evidence

There is no comparable current performance statistic across the consumer alternatives in the available material. OSWorld and WebArena measure particular benchmark tasks under particular conditions, and the dated CUA figures cannot rank products that were not tested in the same setup. A fluent explanation after a failed click is not evidence of task completion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a meaningful evaluation, measure your own task set: completion without intervention, correct handling of approval gates, recovery after a changed page, false actions on sensitive screens, time to completion, and the number of manual takeovers. Keep browser profiles, network conditions, and account permissions consistent when comparing two options.

Availability, model history, and what the dates mean

Date Announcement or report What it establishes
April 8, 2026 Meta Muse Spark launch announcement Meta said the model was available on meta.ai and the Meta AI app and was still investing in long-horizon agentic systems and coding workflows where it needed to close performance gaps. This was a model announcement, not a complete evaluation of the later consumer Muse product.
July 9, 2026 Meta Muse Spark 1.1 announcement Meta said version 1.1 was available in the Meta AI app and on meta.ai, with developers able to use it through the public-preview Meta Model API. Meta described tool use, computer use, and multi-agent workflows.
September 2026 Meta Muse consumer launch Meta described a personal agent with a persistent isolated Linux computer and browser, including approvals for consequential actions.
September 8, 2026 Associated Press launch report Reported U.S.-only availability for adults 18 and older at launch. Treat this as a dated snapshot.
January 23, 2025 OpenAI CUA announcement Provided the dated OSWorld and WebArena figures and described screen, mouse, keyboard, and confirmation behavior in a research preview.

Current prices, plan limits, regional rollouts, and account eligibility are volatile and were not established consistently for every option. Check the relevant provider’s current official product page before committing to a workflow.

A practical way to test an alternative

  1. Write one measurable task. Define the starting state, permitted websites, desired end state, and actions that must remain manual.
  2. Create a low-risk account or sandbox. Use test data and a separate browser profile; do not begin with payments, identity documents, or production settings.
  3. Grant the minimum access. Start with read or draft operations and add write permissions only after the agent behaves as expected.
  4. Observe every transition. Record wrong domains, unexpected clicks, repeated loops, hallucinated success, and places where you had to intervene.
  5. Test interruption. Pause the agent, close the tab, let the device sleep when appropriate, or revoke a permission. Learn whether the workflow stops safely and how it resumes.
  6. Verify externally. Check the target service’s history, sent items, order record, or settings page instead of trusting the agent’s final message.
  7. Document a runbook. Note supported login methods, approval points, recovery steps, and the person responsible for monitoring the agent.

Which alternative fits which reader?

Your situation Most sensible starting point Reason
You want supervised work across several web tabs Claude in Chrome Its documented strength is browser-tab activity, with Claude app conversations available for continuation.
You already work in Chrome and need a multi-step flow Gemini Auto Browse It is designed for multi-step Chrome tasks and can use saved Password Manager logins with permission.
You need unattended persistence after closing the app Muse, where your account is eligible Meta’s defining description is a persistent isolated cloud computer; the browser alternatives are documented as local.
You are shipping an agent inside your own software Muse Spark API or Gemini API Computer Use Both expose a screenshot/action pattern, while your application controls the environment and policy layer.
You are comparing screen-agent research claims Read the CUA description as historical context The January 2025 preview and benchmark figures do not establish a current consumer product choice.

The best alternative is therefore conditional: choose the browser options for hands-on Chrome work, an API for a system you are prepared to engineer and secure, and Muse itself when persistent managed execution is the requirement and your account is eligible. Do not treat a developer API, a local browser helper, and a cloud personal agent as interchangeable products.
