Best Alternatives to HP Printers for Affordable Home Printing (2026 Guide)

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

For most homes, the best alternative to an HP printer is a refillable ink-tank model rather than another cartridge printer. Canon MegaTank, Epson EcoTank, and Brother INKvestment Tank printers cost more at checkout than basic cartridge machines, but their bottles can reduce the cost of regular color printing. The Canon MegaTank PIXMA G3290 has the strongest budget-color evidence here: Tom’s Guide estimated about 0.9 cents per color page in 2026, compared with a 1.9-cent average for the tested ink-tank category.

If you print almost exclusively black text, print only occasionally, or worry about liquid ink drying while a printer sits unused, a monochrome laser may be the more economical choice. The right decision depends on page volume, color and photo needs, duplex printing, scanning, wireless features, warranty coverage, and the price and availability of genuine supplies in your country.

Option Evidence and published figures Best fit
Canon MegaTank PIXMA G3290 Tom’s Guide reported a $249 review price, duplex printing, and 8.7 pages per minute in 2025 testing. A 2026 estimate put color cost at about 0.9 cents per page. Households that print color documents regularly and want very low running cost with occasional photo printing.
Brother MFC-T580DW / INKvestment Tank Wireless color all-in-one, automatic duplex printing, and a three-year limited warranty according to Brother. Brother’s 2025 announcement also listed a Work Smart 1365 model at a $159.99 MSRP with in-box ink. Home offices that value duplex features, warranty coverage, and refillable bottles.
Epson EcoTank Epson’s European calculator claims savings of up to 50% over three years versus mono laser for its defined comparison. The estimate uses ISO/IEC 24712 patterns and IDC shipment data. Buyers willing to select a model by document, photo, duplex, and ADF requirements rather than by brand alone.
Monochrome laser The available evidence establishes the printer family as a sensible alternative for predominantly black-text work, but does not identify one current model winner. Homes that rarely need color and may leave the printer idle for long periods.

Why refillable tanks can cost less than cartridge printers

Cartridge printers generally put the inexpensive part of the purchase at the front and the recurring expense in replacement cartridges. Tank printers reverse that pattern: the printer often costs more initially, while ink is supplied in bottles that you pour into reservoirs. That distinction matters when you print worksheets, forms, schoolwork, recipes, or other color pages every month.

A cents-per-page figure is useful only when its boundaries stay attached to it. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 estimate of approximately 0.9 cents for a Canon G3290 color page is a test-based estimate, not a guaranteed retail price. It excludes the printer purchase, paper, local taxes, and any differences in page coverage or maintenance. The same source reported a 1.9-cent average for the ink-tank category it tested. On the narrow cost-per-page measure, 500 color pages would equate to roughly $4.50 at 0.9 cents each or $9.50 at 1.9 cents each, before those other costs.

Upfront price can dominate if your household prints only a few pages each month. Conversely, a higher initial price can be recovered more quickly when page volume is steady. A simple planning calculation is:

Estimated supply cost = expected pages × tested cost per page

Then add the printer price, paper, taxes, and any replacement parts. Use the result as a comparison tool, not as a promise of what your local store or household will pay.

Canon MegaTank PIXMA G3290: strongest evidence for low-cost color

What the published testing says

The PIXMA G3290 is described as an entry-level ink-tank all-in-one with basic features and very low ink costs. Tom’s Guide reported a $249 price at the time of its review, duplex printing, and a measured speed of 8.7 pages per minute. The tested ink-tank category averaged 9.8 pages per minute, so the G3290 was slower than that category average while still offering the key operating-cost advantage.

A separate 2026 Tom’s Guide roundup estimated color printing at about 0.9 cents per page for the G3290, versus a reported 1.9-cent ink-tank category average. Because the two figures come from a reviewer’s methodology, they should be treated as comparative evidence rather than a universal tariff for every page you print.

Who should choose it

  • Families printing color worksheets, forms, labels, and occasional photographs.
  • Buyers who can accept a higher purchase price in exchange for inexpensive bottle refills.
  • Users who need duplex printing but do not require a high-speed office machine.

What to check before purchase

Confirm that the model number sold in your country is actually G3290; regional naming and bundles can differ. Check the box contents, the supported paper sizes, wireless and mobile-print compatibility, scanner functions, and the current price. Also confirm that genuine replacement bottles are stocked locally. The published $249 figure is a review-time price from 2025, not a current or worldwide price.

Brother INKvestment Tank: a warranty-focused color all-in-one

MFC-T580DW features

Brother specifies the MFC-T580DW as a wireless color all-in-one with duplex printing and a three-year limited warranty. Those characteristics make it relevant to a home office that scans, copies, and prints on both sides of the page rather than to someone seeking the absolute lowest entry price.

The warranty period is a practical differentiator when a printer is expected to handle regular household or small-office work. Read the regional warranty terms carefully: coverage, registration requirements, service arrangements, and included consumables can vary by country.

What Brother’s 2025 announcement adds

Brother’s 2025 announcement introduced new INKvestment Tank models for home printing. It listed a Work Smart 1365 at a $159.99 MSRP and described in-box ink intended to extend the interval between purchases. MSRP is a manufacturer’s suggested price, so a store’s current price, sales tax, shipping, and regional availability may differ.

When it is the better choice

  • You need wireless printing and automatic duplexing in one machine.
  • A three-year limited warranty is more important than a narrowly measured cost-per-page lead.
  • You want refillable bottles and a conventional all-in-one layout for home-office tasks.

Do not assume every INKvestment Tank model has the same speed, scanner, paper handling, or bottle yield. Compare the exact model specification and genuine bottle prices available where you live.

Epson EcoTank: interpret the savings claim correctly

What Epson’s calculator claims

Epson’s current European calculator claims savings of up to 50% over three years compared with a monochrome laser for its defined comparison. Its methodology references ISO/IEC 24712 test patterns and IDC shipment data, with IDC figures published in the first quarter of 2024 and based on 2023 shipments.

“Up to 50%” is a maximum result within Epson’s specified comparison, not a guarantee for every EcoTank model or household. It is also a manufacturer estimate, not an independent test of all printers sold worldwide. The result can change with page coverage, color use, paper, printer price, ink included in the box, maintenance cycles, taxes, and local supply prices.

How to select an EcoTank model

Choose by workload instead of assuming that the EcoTank name identifies one specification. Establish whether you need photo-oriented color, automatic duplexing, an automatic document feeder (ADF), a particular paper size, or a compact footprint. Then compare the model’s purchase price and genuine bottle availability with the alternatives you can actually buy in your region.

  • MOBILE PRINTING MADE EASY: Go mobile with the Brother Mobile Connect app(5) that delivers easy onscreen menu navigation for printing, copying, scanning, and device management from your mobile device. Monitor your ink usage with Page Gauge to help ensure you don’t run out(6).
  • Document-heavy households: prioritize duplexing, an ADF, paper capacity, and text legibility.
  • Photo and craft users: examine the model’s photo features, supported media, and the cost of the required color bottles.
  • Occasional users: account for the possibility that long idle periods make a laser more convenient, even if a tank has a lower measured ink cost.

When a monochrome laser is the smarter alternative

A monochrome laser is worth comparing when nearly everything you print is black text: invoices, forms, shipping labels, drafts, and school documents without color graphics. It uses toner rather than liquid ink, so the specific concern about liquid ink drying during long idle periods is reduced. The available evidence supports this as a use-case distinction, but it does not establish one current laser model as the universal winner.

Compare these laser specifications locally

  • Toner yield: compare the rated number of pages and the price of a genuine replacement cartridge.
  • Duplexing: automatic two-sided printing can reduce paper use for long documents.
  • Wireless support: check compatibility with your phones, tablets, and home network.
  • Purchase price: a low toner cost does not compensate for an unnecessarily expensive printer if your volume is tiny.
  • Color requirement: a mono laser cannot produce color pages, so keep a separate color solution in mind if that need is occasional but real.

For a mixed household, compare the cost and inconvenience of owning one color tank versus using a mono laser plus another way to obtain occasional color pages. The best answer depends on how often those color pages occur, not on a single advertised yield.

A decision framework based on your printing pattern

If you print regular color documents

Start with a refillable tank. The Canon G3290 has the clearest low-cost color evidence in this comparison, while Brother’s MFC-T580DW emphasizes duplexing and a three-year limited warranty. Epson EcoTank is a broad family, so narrow the choice by the exact document and scanning features you need.

If you print black text almost exclusively

Price a monochrome laser against a tank printer. Include the printer’s purchase price, toner yield, replacement cost, duplexing, and wireless features. The convenience of leaving a laser idle can matter more than a tank’s low color-ink estimate when color is rarely used.

If you print photos as well as documents

Keep a color tank on the shortlist, but do not use a document-page estimate as a photo-cost promise. Photo coverage, paper type, and maintenance can consume more ink than the standardized page used in a cost calculation. Verify the model’s photo handling and the local price of all required bottles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you scan or copy multi-page documents

Look specifically for an all-in-one with an ADF and automatic duplex support. The G3290 and MFC-T580DW evidence includes duplex printing, while the exact ADF configuration must be checked on the regional product specification. A printer that is cheap to run but lacks the document-handling feature you use weekly can be a false economy.

If your printer sits unused for weeks

Consider a monochrome laser first if color is not essential. If you choose a tank, follow the manufacturer’s maintenance guidance and plan occasional use rather than letting the machine remain dormant indefinitely. Maintenance cycles can consume ink, so include that possibility when estimating long-term cost.

How to compare total ownership cost before buying

  1. Count pages by type. Estimate monthly black-text, color-document, and photo pages separately. A single blended number can hide the reason one printer is cheaper.
  2. Record the purchase price. Use the current local price, including tax and delivery, rather than an old review price or MSRP.
  3. Check what is in the box. Note the supplied ink or toner and whether the advertised yield assumes standard test coverage.
  4. Find genuine replacement supplies. Confirm bottle or toner part numbers, prices, and stock in your country before committing to a model.
  5. Apply a realistic page estimate. Multiply your expected pages by the available tested or rated cost figure, keeping its test conditions attached.
  6. Add paper and maintenance. Include specialty photo paper, cleaning cycles, replacement components, and the cost of features you would otherwise buy separately.
  7. Value time and inconvenience. Wireless setup, duplexing, an ADF, warranty service, and avoiding frequent cartridge changes can be worth more than a small numerical difference.

For example, using the published G3290 estimate, 1,000 color pages would be approximately $9 in ink at 0.9 cents per page. That arithmetic does not convert the estimate into a guarantee: your pages, coverage, paper, maintenance, and local bottle price may produce a different result.

Features that matter more than the logo

Automatic duplex printing

Duplexing prints both sides without manually turning sheets. It is valuable for school packets, contracts, and long household documents. The G3290 and MFC-T580DW descriptions include duplex printing; verify whether the exact regional variant provides automatic duplexing or a manual workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scanner and ADF requirements

All-in-one printers can scan and copy, but an ADF is what makes multi-page jobs practical. If you regularly digitize bills or forms, make ADF capacity and duplex scanning behavior part of the purchase decision instead of assuming every all-in-one includes them.

Wireless and mobile compatibility

Wireless printing is specified for the MFC-T580DW. For any candidate, check the supported operating systems, mobile-print method, and whether your home network uses a band or security mode the printer supports. A printer that cannot reliably connect to your devices is expensive regardless of its ink price.

Paper and media support

Verify the paper sizes and weights you actually use, especially envelopes, labels, and photo paper. A lower running cost is irrelevant if the printer cannot feed the media required for your projects.

Warranty and local service

Brother’s MFC-T580DW listing includes a three-year limited warranty. Compare the warranty term and service process for every model in your country, including whether the warranty covers the printhead or treats it as a consumable. Keep purchase records and use genuine supplies where the warranty terms require them.

Common mistakes when replacing an HP printer

Choosing on purchase price alone

A cheap cartridge printer can become costly when replacement cartridges arrive. Conversely, a tank printer can be poor value for a household that prints only a handful of pages each month. Calculate expected use before choosing a printer family.

Treating a test figure as a guaranteed bill

The G3290’s 0.9-cent estimate and the 1.9-cent category average are reviewer figures under stated test conditions. They do not include every household expense. Epson’s 50% figure is a methodology-bound manufacturer estimate for a specified European comparison. Keep those qualifications attached whenever you compare numbers.

Ignoring regional model differences

Names, bundles, bottle part numbers, prices, and warranty coverage can vary by country. Confirm the exact model code and supply compatibility on the local product page or retailer listing.

Buying a tank for a rarely used printer

Tank printers favor steady color volume. If your machine can sit untouched for long periods and almost all output is black, a mono laser may avoid the liquid-ink maintenance concern that motivated your search.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Forgetting the features you use every week

Before ordering, check duplexing, scanning, ADF operation, paper sizes, wireless support, and the physical space available. Saving on ink does not compensate for manually feeding every page or replacing a missing function with another device.

Practical setup and maintenance for a tank printer

  1. Place the printer on a level surface. Leave the clearance recommended by the manufacturer for bottle filling, paper loading, and ventilation.
  2. Use only the specified bottle type. Match each color to its reservoir and keep caps and labels intact so colors are not mixed.
  3. Record the initial fill date. This gives you a useful household reference for how quickly your real pages consume ink.
  4. Run the manufacturer’s alignment or nozzle procedure when prompted. Do not infer ink economy from a setup page; initial charging and maintenance use ink.
  5. Print periodically if the manufacturer recommends it. Regular use can be preferable to leaving a liquid-ink system idle for long stretches.
  6. Keep genuine replacement bottles available. Running completely empty can interrupt an urgent print job and may complicate maintenance.

Follow the manual for the exact cleaning and refill procedure. Overfilling, using the wrong bottle, or forcing a clogged printhead can create costs that overwhelm any theoretical per-page saving.

What to verify before checkout

  • Exact regional model number and current street price.
  • Ink or toner included in the box and its stated yield.
  • Current price and local stock of genuine replacement bottles or toner.
  • Automatic duplex printing and, if needed, duplex scanning.
  • Scanner type, ADF availability, and copy functions.
  • Supported paper sizes, weights, envelopes, labels, and photo media.
  • Wireless and mobile-print compatibility with your devices.
  • Warranty length, registration rules, and local service arrangements.
  • Physical dimensions, noise expectations, and space for paper and refills.

Bottom line

For affordable home color printing, begin with refillable tanks: the Canon MegaTank PIXMA G3290 is the strongest budget-color candidate in the available evidence, Brother’s MFC-T580DW stands out for duplexing and a three-year limited warranty, and Epson EcoTank offers a wide range of models whose value depends on the exact configuration. Choose a monochrome laser instead when black text dominates and the printer may sit unused. In every case, calculate ownership cost with your page mix and local supply prices, and treat published cents-per-page and savings figures as test- or methodology-specific estimates rather than guarantees.
