OpenAI Realtime, OpenAI GPT-Live, and Google Gemini Live are the strongest documented alternatives to Grok Voice 3.0 for production voice agents. Choose native speech-to-speech when sub-second turn-taking and natural interruptions matter most; choose GPT-Live when you need to keep an existing text-agent backend; choose a Realtime session when one connection should handle audio, tools, state, interruptions, and handoffs; and choose Gemini Live when bidirectional video or Google’s multimodal ecosystem is central. A chained speech-to-text (STT) → agent → text-to-speech (TTS) pipeline remains the best option when you must inspect or transform every intermediate utterance.
There is no reliable cross-provider latency ranking yet. xAI’s published Grok Voice 3.0 figures are vendor claims, not a neutral benchmark against identical conditions on competing models.

The practical comparison is therefore architectural. A voice agent can process audio natively in one model, delegate voice interaction to a model while your backend remains responsible for reasoning, or pass recognized text through separate STT, agent, and TTS components.
The best documented alternatives
OpenAI Realtime API
OpenAI’s Realtime API combines speech, reasoning, and tool use in a single session. The session can maintain audio turns and conversation state, detect interruptions, invoke tools, and support handoffs between agents or workflows. OpenAI’s audio guidance describes voice-to-voice interaction without an intermediate STT or TTS step.
This is the closest documented match for a full-duplex Grok-style agent. The model can listen while a user is speaking, begin responding without waiting for a separately generated transcript, and stop when the user interrupts. That design removes synchronization points between independent services, although your application still needs to handle authentication, session lifecycle, tool permissions, logging, and failures.
Choose Realtime when one session should own the live conversation and its actions. It is particularly suitable for support agents, scheduling assistants, and phone workflows in which an interruption must cancel or revise an in-progress response instead of creating a second, competing pipeline.
OpenAI GPT-Live
GPT-Live is a different OpenAI architecture. It is intended for a full-duplex voice interface while a separate backend handles reasoning, business rules, or tools. In effect, the live voice layer manages the conversational audio experience and delegates selected work to an existing text-agent system.

This separation is useful when your organization already has a tested text agent, retrieval system, policy engine, or workflow service that should remain the source of truth. You avoid rewriting that backend for a new audio-native model. The trade-off is an additional boundary: audio events, delegated requests, partial results, errors, and cancellation signals must be coordinated between the live layer and your server.
Choose GPT-Live when preserving existing backend logic is more important than keeping every operation inside one Realtime session. It also gives teams a clearer place to enforce authorization, data handling, and deterministic business rules.
Google Gemini Live API
Google’s Gemini Live API supports low-latency, bidirectional voice and video agents. The documented integration uses WebSocket connections from Python backends or JavaScript front ends. It also supports ephemeral tokens, live transcription and captioning, and streaming through Google’s Agent Development Kit for voice and video communication.
Gemini Live is the strongest fit when the agent must understand or produce more than audio. A camera feed, shared visual context, live captions, or a Google-oriented SDK and deployment environment can outweigh differences in model behavior. Ephemeral tokens can let a browser establish a session without exposing a long-lived server credential, but your server still needs to mint and govern those tokens.
Confirm supported languages, regions, quotas, and current model identifiers for your target deployment. “Low latency” describes the interaction design, not a guaranteed response time for every network, region, audio codec, or workload.

Native speech-to-speech or a chained pipeline?
Use native speech-to-speech when turn-taking is the product
A native model receives audio and returns audio as part of a continuous interaction. There is no mandatory transcript-generation step between what the user says and what the agent hears, or between the agent’s reasoning and its spoken response. Fewer service boundaries usually mean fewer queues, conversions, and synchronization failures.
- Choose it for rapid back-and-forth dialogue, barge-in, and natural conversational rhythm.
- Choose it when a transcript is useful but does not need to be the sole control surface for every decision.
- Plan explicit cancellation semantics so a user interruption stops audio already being streamed.
- Keep a separate event log if your compliance team needs an auditable record of turns and tool calls.
Use a chained STT → agent → TTS design when text is a control surface
A chained pipeline first recognizes speech, sends text to an agent, and synthesizes the response. It is slower in the best case because each stage must complete enough work for the next stage to proceed, but it exposes every intermediate representation.
- Redact names, payment details, health information, or secrets before they reach the reasoning model.
- Apply deterministic normalization, translation, classification, or retrieval to text between stages.
- Swap STT or TTS vendors independently when language coverage, voice quality, or regional availability changes.
- Reuse an existing text-agent test suite and transcript-based observability stack.
The cost is not only latency. You must stream partial transcripts, decide when an utterance is final, handle recognition corrections, cancel TTS when a new utterance arrives, and reconcile failures when one provider succeeds while another times out.

How to choose by requirement
Lowest practical latency
Start with a native speech-to-speech design and measure the complete path: microphone capture, network transfer, voice-activity detection, first model response, first playable audio packet, and interruption recovery. Do not compare a vendor’s “under one second” claim with another provider’s marketing phrase unless the test definitions match. Measure p50 and tail latency under your real regions, codecs, concurrency, and telephony path.
Interruption and barge-in
Ask whether the service exposes a clear event for user speech, partial transcripts, response cancellation, and resumed generation. Realtime sessions explicitly document interruptions and audio turns. With GPT-Live, define how an interruption travels from the voice layer to the delegated backend. In a chained design, cancellation must propagate through TTS, the agent request, and any tool still running.
Tool and function calling
If the agent can book, refund, search, or change data, separate conversational fluency from authorization. Realtime sessions document tool use within the session. GPT-Live lets an existing backend keep its tool layer. Gemini Live can be integrated with streaming application logic and the Agent Development Kit. For every option, require server-side validation, idempotency keys for write operations, timeouts, and a spoken fallback when a tool is unavailable.
Session state and history
A single Realtime session can hold audio turns and conversation state. GPT-Live requires a deliberate state contract between the live interface and your backend. Gemini Live applications should define which transcript, caption, and video events are retained. Chained systems make history explicit as text, but you must decide how to represent corrections, overlapping speech, and audio that was never confidently transcribed.
Browser, server, and phone connectivity
For a browser, evaluate whether the provider supports your preferred WebSocket or WebRTC pattern, token exchange, microphone permissions, and reconnect behavior. For a phone agent, test codec conversion, packet loss, DTMF, call transfer, hold music, and regional telephony termination. xAI documents WebSocket audio and text streaming; Gemini documents WebSocket connections from Python and JavaScript. The exact transport supported by your chosen OpenAI integration depends on the session architecture and client.
Best Value
Languages and modalities
Make a language matrix before selecting a model: recognition accuracy, spoken output, accent handling, code-switching, transcription quality, and safety behavior for each language you serve. Gemini Live has documented voice and video capabilities. Native audio does not automatically mean broad language coverage, and a chained stack may win when a specialist STT or TTS component supports a language your end-to-end model does not.
Observability and intermediate-text control
Native audio can reduce latency but may provide less direct control over the exact text used at every internal step. A chained pipeline gives you transcripts to redact, search, evaluate, and replay. GPT-Live offers a middle path: the live voice experience is separate while your backend retains text-oriented logic. In all architectures, record consent, timestamps, model and prompt versions, tool arguments, cancellation events, latency segments, and error codes according to your retention policy.
Reliability and regional availability
Availability is regional and can change by model, account tier, and transport. Check quotas, concurrency limits, data residency, outage history, fallback models, and whether a session can reconnect without losing state. A multi-provider chained design can improve substitution options, but it introduces more dependencies and more places for a partial failure.

Implementation patterns
Pattern 1: A single Realtime session
- Create a short-lived client authorization flow rather than shipping a permanent provider key in a browser or mobile application.
- Open the Realtime connection and send the session instructions, voice configuration, turn-detection policy, and tool definitions.
- Stream microphone audio in the format required by the session and render returned audio packets immediately.
- Subscribe to turn, transcript, response, tool-call, interruption, and error events. Persist correlation IDs so one user turn can be traced across model output and backend actions.
- When the user speaks over the agent, stop playback, cancel the active response, and let the new turn become authoritative.
- Require the server to validate every tool call before changing customer data, then return a concise result for the model to speak.
Pattern 2: GPT-Live with an existing text agent
- Keep authentication, retrieval, policy checks, and business tools in your current backend.
- Use the live voice layer to capture speech, maintain the audio interaction, and detect user interruptions.
- Define a typed delegation message containing the user turn, conversation identifier, locale, authorization context, and cancellation token.
- Stream backend text or structured events back to the live layer rather than waiting for a complete paragraph when the interface can speak incrementally.
- On interruption, invalidate the delegated request or mark its result stale so a late tool response cannot be spoken or applied to the wrong turn.
Pattern 3: Gemini Live with voice and video
- Have your server mint ephemeral credentials for the browser or application session.
- Establish the documented WebSocket connection from a Python backend or JavaScript front end.
- Send audio and, when required, video frames with explicit session metadata and rate limits.
- Enable live transcription or captions when users need a visual record, accessibility support, or operator supervision.
- If using the Agent Development Kit, define how streamed model events map to your tools, UI, and handoff rules.
- Test camera denial, weak bandwidth, token expiry, reconnects, and switching from video to audio-only mode.
Pattern 4: Chained STT → agent → TTS
- Capture audio and stream it to STT with voice-activity detection and a policy for final versus provisional text.
- Redact or transform the transcript before sending it to the agent, preserving offsets if your audit system needs to map text back to audio.
- Run the agent with explicit conversation history, tool authorization, timeouts, and a cancellation token.
- Send partial or final text to TTS, then begin playback as soon as a safe segment is ready.
- On barge-in, stop TTS playback, cancel outstanding generation where possible, and retain the final transcript and cancellation reason.
- Measure each stage separately so a “slow voice agent” can be attributed to capture, STT, reasoning, tool execution, TTS, or transport.
Cost and procurement questions
xAI’s stated Grok price is $0.08 per minute, as reported by xAI for 2026. Confirm whether that is the complete billable unit, whether input and output audio are treated equally, and whether telephony, storage, tool execution, or overage charges are separate.
No comparable current price was established for OpenAI Realtime, GPT-Live, Gemini Live, or Nova Sonic in the available documentation. Do not infer that a missing figure means free, cheaper, or more expensive. Request a rate card that specifies audio direction, token conversion, minimum billable duration, concurrent sessions, regional surcharges, and enterprise commitments.
Build a cost model from your own traffic assumptions:
- Average connected minutes per session and percentage of silent time.
- Inbound and outbound audio duration, including retries and reconnects.
- Peak concurrent sessions and the quota needed to absorb bursts.
- Tool and backend compute, telephony termination, recording, transcription storage, and observability.
- Human handoffs, failed calls, and repeated utterances caused by recognition errors.
Run the same scripted scenarios and live pilot traffic through each finalist. Report cost per completed task, not only cost per connected minute; a cheaper model that causes more repetitions or failed tool calls may have a higher operational cost.

Evaluation checklist before switching from Grok
- Latency: Measure first audio, end-of-turn response, and interruption recovery at p50, p95, and p99.
- Conversation quality: Test overlapping speech, silence, accents, corrections, ambiguous requests, and noisy rooms.
- Action safety: Verify authentication, confirmation prompts, idempotency, and rollback for every write tool.
- State: Reconnect sessions, resume after network loss, and confirm that stale responses cannot overwrite newer turns.
- Transport: Test browser, server, and phone paths with the codecs and regions you actually deploy.
- Language and accessibility: Check recognition, voices, captions, transcripts, and keyboard or operator fallbacks.
- Operations: Confirm quotas, regional availability, incident communication, data controls, retention, and exportable logs.
- Economics: Calculate completed-task cost under realistic silence, retries, handoffs, and peak concurrency.
Bottom-line recommendation
For a direct, documented replacement with integrated tools, interruptions, and session state, start with the OpenAI Realtime API. If your existing text-agent backend is valuable and should remain in control, evaluate GPT-Live. Choose Gemini Live when voice-and-video interaction or Google’s multimodal and Agent Development Kit ecosystem is a deciding factor. Investigate Amazon Nova Sonic only after confirming its current AWS documentation and commercial availability. Keep a chained STT → agent → TTS architecture when inspection, redaction, deterministic text processing, or independent component replacement outweighs the latency and operational simplicity of native speech-to-speech.
