Best alternatives to GPT-6-Astra for advanced physics research

There is no single GPT-6-Astra replacement that wins every physics workflow. For a general-purpose assistant that combines graduate-level reasoning, literature synthesis, coding and terminal tools, Claude Fable 5.1 is the strongest benchmarked alternative in the available comparison. GPT-5.6 Sol is a sensible choice when conceptual answers and mathematical reliability matter more than autonomous tool execution. Claude Opus 5 and Claude Fable 5 are credible alternatives with different benchmark profiles, while Gemini 3.8 Flash has a strong GPQA Diamond result but incomplete reporting for the other tests. Specialist scientific models such as GPhyT deserve consideration for simulation and materials work, not as universal replacements for a research assistant.

Use these results as a screening aid, not as proof that a model can conduct publishable physics unaided. Every candidate still needs explicit assumptions, dimensional checks, reproducible code, source verification and an independent review of the mathematics.

What an advanced-physics alternative must actually do

Graduate and research physics rarely reduces to answering a clean multiple-choice question. A useful system may have to find and compare papers, translate notation between subfields, derive an approximation, write a numerical experiment, run a simulation, inspect an output file, fit a model and explain which assumptions could invalidate the result. Those are different capabilities.

Benchmark scores therefore answer narrower questions. GPQA Diamond is a useful screen for difficult scientific question answering. FrontierMath Tier 4 probes advanced mathematical reasoning. Terminal-Bench Science 0.1 tests a tool-assisted workflow involving code, data analysis, simulations and model fitting. None of these tests establishes that a model can formulate a novel hypothesis, recover a result from an ambiguous paper or recognize that a plausible-looking derivation violates a conservation law.

The best choice is the model whose tested and observed behavior matches your bottleneck:

  • Literature and theory: prioritize mathematical reasoning, faithful quotation of source material and the ability to expose assumptions.
  • Code and simulation: prioritize terminal-tool competence, inspectable intermediate files and willingness to test rather than merely describe code.
  • Open-ended investigation: require a workflow for competing hypotheses, uncertainty and negative results; benchmark multiple-choice accuracy is not enough.
  • Domain prediction: test a specialist scientific model on your own data and compare it with established baselines.
  • Publication preparation: treat all generated equations, citations, numerical values and plots as drafts until checked independently.

Benchmark snapshot: alternatives beside GPT-6-Astra

The following figures come from OpenAI’s 2026 comparison table. They were reported under that table’s own prompts, harnesses and settings, so they are directional rather than a neutral laboratory ranking.

Model Terminal-Bench Science 0.1 FrontierMath Tier 4 GPQA Diamond What the reported pattern suggests
GPT-6 Astra (reference) 64.6% 97.6% 96.0% Reference frontier model with the highest reported score in all three columns.
GPT-5.6 Sol 22.4% 83.0% 94.6% Strong question-answering result; substantially lower score on the terminal workflow test.
Claude Fable 5.1 52.6% 87.8% 93.7% Closest alternative on the reported tool-assisted test and competitive on both reasoning screens.
Claude Opus 5 30.0% 73.2% 93.7% High GPQA result, with lower reported scores on the other two tests.
Claude Fable 5 21.4% 90.2% 92.6% Highest FrontierMath result among the listed Claude alternatives, but low Terminal-Bench score.
Gemini 3.8 Flash Not stated in the comparison table Not stated in the comparison table 95.3% Strong GPQA result; the available table does not support a complete head-to-head claim.

A percentage is the share of benchmark items answered successfully under the publisher’s evaluation setup. It is not a probability that the same model will solve your problem, and the tests may use different prompts, tool harnesses, reasoning settings and contamination controls than your lab.

How to read each evaluation

Terminal-Bench Science 0.1

OpenAI describes this test as a scientific research workflow using code and terminal tools, including data analysis, simulations and model fitting. The spread is operationally important: Claude Fable 5.1 is reported at 52.6%, GPT-5.6 Sol at 22.4%, and GPT-6 Astra at 64.6%. A higher score suggests better performance in that particular harness, but you should still check whether a model reads files, preserves units, catches failed runs and reports uncertainty instead of silently inventing a result.

FrontierMath Tier 4

This is a demanding mathematical-reasoning screen. The reported scores are 97.6% for GPT-6 Astra, 90.2% for Claude Fable 5, 87.8% for Claude Fable 5.1, 83.0% for GPT-5.6 Sol and 73.2% for Claude Opus 5. It can reveal differences in symbolic manipulation and multi-step reasoning, but a correct answer to a closed problem does not demonstrate that a model can choose a useful physical model or estimate an error bar.

GPQA Diamond

GPQA Diamond is a difficult expert-level question set. The available comparison reports 96.0% for GPT-6 Astra, 95.3% for Gemini 3.8 Flash, 94.6% for GPT-5.6 Sol, 93.7% for Claude Fable 5.1, 93.7% for Claude Opus 5 and 92.6% for Claude Fable 5. These close values should not be treated as a meaningful ordering without confidence intervals, task-specific tests and matched settings.

FrontierScience and open-ended work

OpenAI describes FrontierScience as a benchmark built to measure expert-level scientific capabilities, with physics, chemistry and biology coverage and separate Olympiad and Research tracks. In the cited 2025 announcement, GPT-5.2 scored 77% on FrontierScience-Olympiad and 25% on FrontierScience-Research. The gap illustrates why open-ended research is harder than solving structured questions: forming a defensible hypothesis, deciding what evidence would discriminate between explanations and handling incomplete information are separate skills.

Model-by-model guidance

GPT-5.6 Sol: a theory-oriented general assistant

GPT-5.6 Sol records 94.6% on GPQA Diamond and 83.0% on FrontierMath Tier 4 in the cited comparison. Those results make it a reasonable candidate for derivation checks, graduate-level explanations and translating mathematical ideas into a research plan. Its 22.4% Terminal-Bench Science score is much lower than Claude Fable 5.1’s 52.6%, so do not infer that strong answers automatically translate into reliable autonomous coding or simulation.

Choose it when a human will direct the investigation and inspect the code, especially for literature notes, symbolic work and competing derivations. Before accepting an answer, ask for definitions of every symbol, a dimensional analysis, limiting cases and a short independent derivation.

Claude Fable 5.1: the strongest reported tool-workflow alternative

Claude Fable 5.1 posts 52.6% on Terminal-Bench Science 0.1, 87.8% on FrontierMath Tier 4 and 93.7% on GPQA Diamond. Among the named alternatives in the table, it has the highest reported Terminal-Bench score and a balanced profile across all three tests. That makes it a practical candidate for projects that move repeatedly between a paper, a script, a data file and a fitted model.

The score is not evidence that it will execute your environment correctly. Give it a small, reversible task first: load a known dataset, run a unit test, reproduce a published figure and save the exact commands and outputs. Only then expand the scope, with a human approving each change to analysis code.

Claude Opus 5: high question-answering score, uneven workflow scores

Claude Opus 5 is reported at 93.7% on GPQA Diamond, 73.2% on FrontierMath Tier 4 and 30.0% on Terminal-Bench Science 0.1. It may suit conceptual tutoring or a second opinion on a derivation. The lower scores on the cited mathematics and terminal tests mean you should not select it solely because its GPQA result matches Claude Fable 5.1’s.

Claude Fable 5: a mathematical specialist candidate

Claude Fable 5 has the highest reported FrontierMath Tier 4 score among the listed Claude alternatives at 90.2%, alongside 92.6% on GPQA Diamond and 21.4% on Terminal-Bench Science 0.1. That combination can be attractive for symbolic exploration where a researcher controls execution. For a hands-off coding workflow, the terminal result argues for additional local testing or a different model.

Gemini 3.8 Flash: promising GPQA result, incomplete comparison

Gemini 3.8 Flash is reported at 95.3% on GPQA Diamond. The same academic comparison does not state Terminal-Bench Science 0.1 or FrontierMath Tier 4 scores, so the evidence cannot establish how it compares on tool use or advanced mathematics. Evaluate it with your own matched prompts if its context handling, integrations or deployment policy fit your lab.

When a specialist scientific model is the better alternative

General-purpose models are useful for reading papers, explaining methods and orchestrating tools. A domain model can be better at a narrower prediction task because it is trained on structured scientific data and optimized for a particular representation.

Stanford’s AI Index 2026 lists GPhyT, AION-1, MACE-MP-0, MatterGen and other scientific models. It describes GPhyT as trained on 1.8 TB of simulation data, with up to 29-times-better performance than specialized models and zero-shot generalization. Those are reported institutional figures, not a guarantee for your material, boundary conditions or simulator.

Consider a specialist model for materials discovery, molecular or atomistic prediction, astronomy pipelines or another narrowly defined task when all of the following are available:

  • a clearly documented training domain and input representation;
  • validation on data that are independent of training examples;
  • an error metric that matches the physical decision you need to make;
  • license and data-governance terms your institution can accept; and
  • a way to compare predictions with an established physical model or experiment.

Use a general model alongside the specialist when you need literature synthesis, experimental planning or code review. Do not ask a language model to conceal uncertainty in a specialist model’s output, and do not treat zero-shot generalization as proof of transfer to a new regime.

Choose by research workflow

Literature synthesis and theory notes

  1. Provide the paper, section or page range rather than relying on an uncited memory-based summary.
  2. Ask for a notation table and a list of assumptions before requesting a derivation.
  3. Have the model separate statements quoted or directly supported by the paper from its own inference.
  4. Check every citation, equation number and limiting case against the original source.

GPT-5.6 Sol, Claude Fable 5.1, Claude Opus 5 and Claude Fable 5 are all plausible candidates for this supervised workflow. The benchmark table does not identify a universal winner for literature work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Numerical simulation and model fitting

  1. Start in a disposable environment with a small test dataset and fixed random seeds.
  2. Ask for executable code plus dependency versions, input units, expected output ranges and failure checks.
  3. Run the code yourself; inspect warnings, convergence, residuals and conservation laws.
  4. Compare the result with an analytic limit, a manufactured solution or a trusted reference implementation.
  5. Store scripts, configuration files, raw outputs and a record of prompts so another researcher can reproduce the run.

Claude Fable 5.1 has the strongest reported Terminal-Bench score among the named alternatives, but that is a reason to test it first, not a reason to grant unattended access to production data.

Symbolic and mathematical exploration

Ask the model to produce two independent derivations, identify where each approximation enters and test special cases such as zero coupling, large mass or a symmetry-restoring limit. Claude Fable 5’s 90.2% FrontierMath Tier 4 result and GPT-5.6 Sol’s 83.0% provide screening signals, while GPQA results show that several models are close on expert questions. A human should still verify signs, factors of two, index conventions and branch choices.

Materials and domain prediction

Benchmark a specialist model against a baseline on held-out structures or experiments. Report calibration, out-of-domain behavior and physically meaningful errors, not only an average score. Use a general model to document the pipeline and inspect code, but keep the specialist model’s training data, license and validation record visible to collaborators.

A verification protocol for publication-quality physics

Stanford’s AI Index 2026 reports that frontier models score under 20% on ReplicationBench. The figure is a warning against unattended end-to-end research claims: even a model that performs well on GPQA or FrontierMath may fail to reproduce a result when details are distributed across code, data and prose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. State the question and scope. Define the physical system, regime, observables and what counts as a successful answer.
  2. Freeze assumptions. Record geometry, boundary conditions, gauge, coordinate system, approximations, priors and units.
  3. Demand inspectable work. Request equations, intermediate values, code, environment details and citations instead of a polished conclusion alone.
  4. Use independent checks. Re-derive key equations, run dimensional analysis, test limiting cases and compare with an alternative implementation.
  5. Challenge the result. Ask for plausible failure modes, sensitivity to parameters, uncertainty estimates and evidence that would falsify the hypothesis.
  6. Separate generated and verified material. Mark drafts clearly in lab notes and do not place unverified citations or numerical claims in a manuscript.

Deployment, access and cost questions to settle locally

The cited benchmark sources do not establish current prices, latency, uptime, context limits, licensing for every specialist model or affiliate availability. Those variables can change by region, account type and date. Before selecting a system, obtain the current terms directly from the provider or your institution’s procurement team.

Compare the complete workflow rather than a token price:

  • Can the model access the files, notebook or terminal tools your project requires?
  • Are prompts, uploaded papers and generated code retained, and can your lab opt out of training use?
  • Can you run the same model version again months later?
  • What context limit and file formats are supported for your corpus?
  • Can administrators log tool calls and restrict network or filesystem access?
  • What is the recovery path if a run times out, a dependency changes or a provider retires a model?

A lower-cost or faster model may be appropriate for triage, formatting and routine checks, while a stronger model handles the small number of difficult derivations. Keep the model choice explicit in your methods record so results remain auditable.

A practical selection sequence

  1. Define three representative tasks. Use one derivation, one code-and-data exercise and one literature-grounded question from your actual field.
  2. Use identical instructions and evidence. Supply the same papers, data, tool permissions and time budget to each candidate.
  3. Score more than the final answer. Record factual accuracy, units, citations, executable code, error handling, uncertainty and the amount of human correction required.
  4. Repeat on adversarial cases. Include a paper with ambiguous notation, a dataset with missing values and a simulation near a known instability.
  5. Choose a workflow, not a leaderboard position. A model with a lower headline score can be the safer choice if it exposes assumptions and produces reproducible artifacts.
  6. Re-evaluate after updates. Model versions, tool harnesses and data policies change; keep a small regression suite for your lab.

What the current evidence cannot prove

The available numbers come from publisher or institutional reports, not an independent, task-matched head-to-head physics study. Prompt wording, hidden reasoning settings, tool access and contamination controls may differ. The TheoreticalPhysics Benchmark described by Stanford contains 57 novel theoretical-physics problems, which is useful evidence of difficulty but still too small to represent every research specialty.

OpenAI’s science page reports 93.2% for GPT-5.2 Pro and 92.4% for GPT-5.2 Thinking on GPQA Diamond, plus 40.3% on FrontierMath Tier 1–3 for GPT-5.2 Thinking. These figures reinforce that strong mathematical reasoning supports technical reliability, but they do not establish how any listed alternative performs on your apparatus, codebase or literature corpus.

OpenAI’s FrontierScience announcement makes the broader point that the most important measure is the novel discovery an AI helps generate. Until a proposed result survives independent derivation, computation and experimental or observational checks, treat the model as an assistant for search, drafting, coding and hypothesis generation—not as an autonomous physicist.
