Best Alternatives to Google’s Phone Scam Detector for Android and iPhone (2026)

The best alternative depends on your phone. Google’s Scam Detection is documented as a Pixel-only feature. On other Android phones, start with Phone by Google’s caller-ID, spam-protection and (where supported) Call Screen features, then add a reputable caller-ID app or your carrier’s filter if you need stronger coverage. On iPhone, Apple’s built-in Call Screening, Silence, Unknown Callers and carrier-identified Spam controls are the most integrated choices. Truecaller and Hiya provide cross-platform app alternatives, while carrier services such as Verizon Call Filter can filter calls at the network level.

No service identifies every spoofed or newly created number. The safest setup combines identification, screening or voicemail, a reviewable blocked-call log, and a way to restore legitimate callers.

What Google’s scam detector actually does

Google uses several similarly named protections, and separating them prevents a common buying mistake.

Scam Detection is Pixel-only

Google’s support documentation says, “Scam Detection only works on Google Pixel devices.” It is therefore not a universal Android setting and cannot be installed as a standalone feature on every Android phone. If you use a Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus or another non-Pixel model, look for the Phone by Google protections described below instead.

Phone by Google is broader than Scam Detection

Phone by Google can identify callers and warn about suspected spam. Its caller-ID system may send information about an unknown number to Google to identify a business caller or determine whether the call is spam. An optional spam-autoblocking setting can prevent calls classified as spam from ringing. Exact controls vary by device, country and carrier.

Call Screen is a separate Phone by Google capability available only on supported devices and in supported regions. It lets Google Assistant interact with a caller before you answer. Check the Phone app’s settings on your handset rather than assuming that every Android phone has it.

Fake-call detection is a different Android feature

Google has also announced Android fake-call detection intended to flag suspected impersonation or spoofed calls when both parties use Phone by Google. That is not the same as Pixel Scam Detection, and availability can depend on a staged software rollout, device support and region. Treat it as an additional warning layer, not a replacement for call screening or voicemail.

Best Android setup if you do not have a Pixel

1. Turn on Phone by Google’s caller ID and spam protection

  1. Open the Phone by Google app.
  2. Open the three-dot menu and choose Settings.
  3. Open Caller ID & spam.
  4. Enable caller and spam identification. If your version offers Filter spam calls or automatic spam blocking, turn it on only after deciding how much risk of a missed legitimate call you accept.

Identification labels a call; filtering changes what happens to it. Check your recent calls and voicemail after enabling an aggressive setting so you know where blocked calls appear.

2. Check whether Call Screen is supported

In Phone by Google, open Settings and look for Call Screen or the spam-and-call-screening section. If the option is absent, your device, carrier or region may not support it. Where available, screening asks the caller for information before your phone rings or before you decide to answer. Do not confuse an unavailable menu with a malfunction.

3. Use a cross-platform database when labels are not enough

Truecaller is the clearest database-oriented alternative for Android and iPhone. Its Google Play description says its caller ID and spam blocker “instantly identifies who’s calling” and automatically stops telemarketers, robocallers and unknown phone numbers. That wording is a vendor claim, not an independently measured accuracy rate. Install it only from your phone’s official app store, grant the caller-ID and blocking permissions it requests, and review its privacy settings before enabling continuous identification.

  • BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.

Hiya is another cross-platform option. It can identify and block calls, but features differ between Android and iPhone. On iPhone, its App Store documentation requires enabling Hiya under Settings > Phone > Call Blocking & Identification. Hiya’s Call Screener, AI Voice Detection and Call Safety Alerts require carrier call forwarding. Forwarding can affect voicemail routing, privacy and regional availability, so confirm how your carrier handles it before switching the feature on.

4. Add a carrier filter if your network supports one

Carrier tools can act before a call reaches the handset. Verizon’s Call Filter service says it detects spam and blocks high-risk spam calls by forwarding them to voicemail. Its free tier includes spam detection, spam filtering, a blocked-call log, allow-listing and reporting. Call Filter Plus adds caller ID, spam lookup, a personal block list, a spam-risk meter and category blocking. Prices, plan names and eligibility can change, and similar services from other carriers use different rules.

Activate the service through your carrier account or app, then place a test call from a trusted number. Confirm that allowed calls ring normally and that filtered calls appear in the carrier’s log or voicemail rather than disappearing.

Best built-in protections on iPhone

Interactive Call Screening

Apple’s Call Screening automatically answers an unknown call, asks the caller for their name and reason, and then rings your iPhone so you can decide whether to answer. This is the closest built-in iPhone equivalent to a human receptionist: the caller must provide context instead of relying only on a number reputation database.

Silence unknown callers

Silence sends calls from numbers that are not saved in your contacts to voicemail. You can still see the call in your history and receive a voicemail, but the phone does not interrupt you. This is useful when you rarely need unscheduled calls, but it can delay a first call from a doctor, delivery driver, school or employer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unknown Callers filtering

Unknown Callers moves calls from unknown numbers into a separate list. It is less disruptive than hard blocking because you retain a record of the calls while keeping the main call list focused on known contacts.

Carrier-identified Spam

Spam silences calls that your carrier identifies as potential spam or fraud and moves them to a Spam list. Carrier detection is useful even when an app database has no entry for a number, but it depends on the quality of your carrier’s signals and can produce false positives.

Caller-ID extensions

iPhone can use caller identification from Apple Business Connect, supported carriers and compatible caller-ID apps. App extensions require permission in the Phone settings and may not work when the app, carrier or region does not support the necessary interface.

How to configure an iPhone without missing legitimate calls

  1. Open Settings, then open Phone. On iOS versions that group built-in apps under Settings > Apps, open Apps > Phone.
  2. Choose Call Screening if you want unknown callers to state a name and reason before your phone rings.
  3. Choose Silence if every unsaved caller should go directly to voicemail.
  4. Enable Unknown Callers if you want unknown numbers separated without fully silencing them.
  5. Enable the carrier’s Spam filtering if it is offered.
  6. Open Call Blocking & Identification and enable only the caller-ID apps you trust.
  7. Save expected callers—medical offices, schools, delivery services, family members and work contacts—to your address book. A saved contact bypasses unknown-caller rules.

Apple’s labels and menu placement can change with iOS updates, and some controls are unavailable in particular countries or with particular carriers. If a setting is missing, check for an iOS update and your carrier’s support information rather than installing an unrelated “phone cleaner” app.

Which option should you choose?

Choose Phone by Google when you want a simple Android baseline

Use the built-in app first if your priority is a free, low-maintenance warning and spam filter. It integrates with the dialer, avoids adding another interface and can offer automatic blocking or Call Screen on supported hardware. The trade-off is that unknown-number information can be sent to Google and feature availability differs by device.

Choose Apple’s controls when interruption is the main problem

Call Screening is the strongest native choice for people who want unknown callers to explain themselves. Silence is appropriate when voicemail is sufficient and missing a live ring is acceptable. Unknown Callers filtering is the middle setting. Carrier Spam filtering adds a separate network signal.

Choose Truecaller when you need a broad caller-ID database

Truecaller is useful for people who receive frequent calls from businesses, telemarketers or numbers outside their contacts and want a database label before answering. Its advertised blocking behavior should not be treated as a guarantee: spoofed numbers, newly created numbers and legitimate numbers with poor reputation data can all defeat or confuse a database.

Choose Hiya when its forwarding-based tools fit your carrier

Hiya’s basic caller ID and blocking can work as an app extension. Its advanced Call Screener, AI Voice Detection and Call Safety Alerts are more conditional because they require call forwarding. Confirm the forwarding destination, voicemail behavior and cancellation process before relying on those features.

Choose a carrier filter for network-level screening

A carrier service is attractive when you want calls filtered before they reach multiple devices or when your carrier has better network intelligence than a handset-only app. It can also make blocked-call logs and allow-lists available in one place. The limitation is eligibility: the service follows the subscriber’s network, plan and region.

Privacy, false positives and recovery

Understand the data path

  • On-device controls: iPhone’s Silence and Unknown Callers settings primarily change how the handset routes calls.
  • Cloud or app databases: caller-ID apps need permissions and may process numbers to match them against reputation data.
  • Carrier systems: network filters use carrier records and may divert calls to voicemail.
  • Call forwarding: advanced Hiya features require forwarding, which can change voicemail handling and expose call metadata to the forwarding service.

Read the permission screen and privacy policy for the exact app version you install. Do not grant contacts, microphone or call-management access merely because an app requests it; enable only what its chosen feature needs.

Recover a legitimate caller

  • Check the phone’s blocked, spam or filtered-call log before assuming a caller never tried.
  • Listen to voicemail and return calls using a number you independently verify, not a number supplied in a suspicious message.
  • Add trusted numbers to contacts or an allow-list.
  • Report a misclassified call in the app or carrier tool so future decisions can improve.
  • Reduce filtering from hard blocking to screening or silence if important calls continue to be diverted.

Why no filter is perfect

Scammers spoof local numbers, rotate numbers quickly and impersonate banks, government offices or delivery companies. A clean caller-ID label proves only that a number has not been flagged; it does not prove who is speaking. Conversely, a warning is a risk signal, not proof that every call is fraudulent. Keep voicemail enabled and verify sensitive requests through an official website, statement or known telephone number.

Why screening matters

The Federal Trade Commission’s “Top scams of 2024” report says consumers reported $12.5 billion lost to fraud, and people who interacted with scammers by phone reported a median loss of $1,500. These are reported-loss figures, not a prevalence rate. Google’s 2026 security blog also cited $2.95 billion in 2024 losses from impersonation scams, attributing the figure to FTC reporting; treat that number as the blog’s quotation of the FTC data rather than as a separate measurement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those figures explain the value of making a caller identify a purpose before you engage, but they do not make any app a guarantee. Number-based tools are best used as layered friction: identify, screen or silence, send uncertain calls to voicemail, and independently verify any request for money, passwords, one-time codes or remote access.

Troubleshooting common problems

A setting is missing

Confirm the phone model, operating-system version, carrier and country. Pixel Scam Detection will not appear on a non-Pixel phone. Call Screen, Apple’s Call Screening and carrier spam tools can each be limited by regional rollout or carrier support.

Legitimate calls go straight to voicemail

Review the blocked or spam log, add recurring callers to contacts or an allow-list, and switch from hard blocking to screening or silence. Ask the caller to leave a voicemail with a callback number you can verify independently.

Hiya’s advanced features do not activate

Check that Hiya is enabled under Settings > Phone > Call Blocking & Identification and that your carrier supports the required call-forwarding configuration. Forwarding restrictions, voicemail conflicts and regional availability can prevent Call Screener, AI Voice Detection or Call Safety Alerts from working.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A carrier filter blocks too much

Open the carrier’s blocked-call log, add trusted numbers to the allow-list and disable category blocking before disabling the entire service. If calls still fail to arrive, test with the carrier’s support team because filtering occurs on the network, not only on the handset.

A caller claims to be from a trusted organization

End the call and contact the organization through a number on its official website, card or statement. Do not rely on caller ID, a local area code or a caller’s ability to state personal details. Screening tools reduce interruptions; they cannot replace verification.
