The best Google Play Books alternative depends on where you want to read. Choose Kobo if you want a store tied to dedicated eReaders and support for common EPUB and PDF files; choose eBooks.com when downloadable, title-level DRM information matters; choose Bookshop.org only if its app or browser reading model suits you; and choose NOOK when you want Barnes & Noble’s account-based device ecosystem. Specialist sources such as ALA eEditions fit professional subjects, while library borrowing through Libby can avoid buying altogether.
A purchase is not automatically a portable file. The publisher’s DRM, the retailer’s app, the ebook format and your device’s transfer method all determine whether a book opens where you expect. Use your current hardware and reading workflow as the starting point, not catalog size alone.

First decide how you want to read
Before opening any ebook store, answer three questions:
Recommended Free Tools
- Which screen will you use? A dedicated eReader, an iPhone or Android phone, a tablet, a Windows or Mac computer, or a mixture?
- Do you need a file you can download? A downloadable EPUB or PDF gives you more control, but DRM can still limit which applications can open it.
- Are you buying, subscribing or borrowing? Store purchases normally remain tied to an account and publisher permissions. A library loan follows a different set of rules and depends on your library’s collection.
If you read almost everything on a phone or tablet, an app-first store may be less troublesome than a store promising files that your device cannot authorize. If you own a Kobo eReader, file and DRM support should be checked before paying. If you use a regular Kindle or a NOOK, never assume that a book bought elsewhere will transfer simply because it is an EPUB.

Rakuten Kobo: the strongest all-round alternative for a dedicated eReader
Kobo is the clearest choice when buying and reading should happen in one ecosystem. It sells ebooks, operates reading apps and makes dedicated eReaders. Kobo’s official format guidance lists EPUB, EPUB2, EPUB3, PDF, FlePub and MOBI for Kobo eReaders and Kobo Desktop. The iOS and Android apps have separate format details, so do not treat the eReader/Desktop list as a promise that every mobile app opens every format.
What Kobo handles well
- Common, non-proprietary formats such as EPUB and PDF.
- A dedicated eReader option for readers who do not want to read on a phone.
- A documented workflow for books protected with Adobe DRM.
- Social DRM files that Kobo says can be read without Adobe Digital Editions (ADE).
How Adobe DRM changes the transfer
An Adobe-DRM purchase is not the same as an unrestricted EPUB. Kobo says these titles require ADE to transfer to a Kobo eReader. The practical sequence is:
- Confirm on the seller’s listing that the book uses Adobe DRM and that Kobo is an accepted device.
- Install ADE on a supported computer and authorize it with the account requested by the seller.
- Download the protected ebook through the seller’s instructions and open it in ADE.
- Connect the Kobo eReader to the computer, authorize it when prompted, and use ADE’s device transfer process.
- Open the book on the Kobo and keep the purchasing account and authorization details available for future transfers.
If the listing says Social DRM, Kobo’s help guidance says ADE is not required. That does not mean every Social-DRM file from every seller is guaranteed to work; the seller’s format and device notes still control.

Choose Kobo when a dedicated eReader is central to your routine, when EPUB/PDF support matters, or when you are willing to use ADE for protected titles. It is a weaker fit if you expect every purchase from unrelated stores to appear automatically in one library. Verify each outside seller’s DRM before buying.

eBooks.com: useful when DRM-free downloads are your priority
eBooks.com is attractive to readers who want to inspect a listing before paying and deliberately seek files they can download. Its help guidance describes a DRM-free filter, but it also stresses that DRM-free status is title-specific. One book may be unrestricted while another from the same publisher requires Readium LCP or Adobe DRM.
How to check a listing
- Use the store’s DRM-free filter if you want unrestricted files, but treat the filter as a starting point.
- Open the individual product page.
- Read the “About this Ebook” section for the stated format and DRM.
- Match that information against the app or device you intend to use.
- Save the listing details with your receipt in case you later need to identify the required reading software.
Readium LCP and Adobe DRM are common protection methods identified in the help material. A protected download may require a particular application or authorization process even when its filename resembles a normal EPUB or PDF.
Kindle compatibility warning
The eBooks.com help article says regular Kindle devices cannot read certain DRM-protected purchases by other means. Treat that as a specific warning, not a universal statement about every eBooks.com title. A DRM-free listing and a protected listing can have completely different device outcomes, so check before checkout if Kindle is your primary reader.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Bookshop.org ebooks: simple app or browser reading, limited device transfer
Bookshop.org’s support center states: “Ebooks from Bookshop.org must be read on either our Apple or Android app, or via a web browser.” That makes the service straightforward for phone, tablet and browser readers, but it is not an open-format universal store.
What you can do
- Read standard titles in the Bookshop.org Apple app.
- Read standard titles in the Bookshop.org Android app.
- Read standard titles in a web browser.
- Download and transfer a title when its listing identifies it as DRM-free.
What you generally cannot do
Bookshop.org says its ebooks generally cannot currently be read on Kindle or NOOK because of proprietary DRM and publisher requirements. The cited support guidance also describes Kobo support as future work. Therefore, do not buy a standard Bookshop.org ebook expecting to sideload it to one of those devices.
Who should choose Bookshop.org
Choose it if supporting independent bookselling and reading inside its apps or browser are both acceptable. If your requirement is a permanent, transferable file, limit your search to titles explicitly marked DRM-free and read the product details carefully.

NOOK combines a store, an account library, apps and dedicated devices. Barnes & Noble’s NOOK Device Terms of Service say purchased digital content is generally available through a NOOK account library and may be transferred to a limited number of supported NOOK devices or apps. DRM can restrict how that transfer works.

Important ownership expectations
- Your library depends on the NOOK account used for the purchase.
- Only supported NOOK devices and apps are covered by the service’s transfer rules.
- Content availability can depend on your country and device.
- If rights change, some items may no longer remain available for re-download.
These conditions do not make NOOK unsuitable; they define it as a managed ecosystem rather than a general-purpose file locker. Keep purchase records and do not erase local copies until you have confirmed that a title can still be downloaded through your account.
Who should choose NOOK
NOOK fits readers already invested in NOOK hardware or apps and comfortable with account-based access. It is a poor match for a cross-store library strategy in which every purchase must move freely among unrelated devices.
ALA eEditions and other specialist suppliers
Some readers need professional or academic subject matter rather than a general consumer catalog. The American Library Association’s eEditions service is an example of this specialist category. ALA says most of its ebooks are DRM-protected PDFs and lists compatible software and vendors or aggregators, including Kobo and eBooks.com.
That workflow differs from buying a typical consumer ebook. Before paying, identify the exact file type, the required software, the authorized vendor and whether your institution’s computer or eReader supports the protection. A specialist source can be the right answer for a narrow subject even when it is inconvenient for a general reading library.

Amazon Kindle and library borrowing: two different alternatives
Amazon Kindle
Kindle is a major competing ecosystem and a reasonable choice for readers who want a store-centered Kindle device or app workflow. Compatibility is title- and policy-dependent. Because detailed current first-party Kindle format and purchase rules were not established for this comparison, check the individual product page and the current device or app support information before buying from another store for Kindle use.
Do not infer compatibility from the word “ebook” alone. A store may sell an EPUB that is still locked by DRM, while a Kindle device may accept only particular delivery routes for that title.
Libby and other library loans
If your goal is access rather than ownership, borrowing may be a better alternative than switching stores. Libby is a relevant library route, but availability depends on your library’s licenses, collection and lending rules. Ask your library which devices and apps it supports for the specific title you want; do not assume that a loan uses the same transfer path as a purchased ebook.

How to choose the right alternative
- Start with the device. For a Kobo eReader, prioritize EPUB/PDF support and verify whether ADE is required. For a Kindle or NOOK, check the retailer’s explicit compatibility statement before purchase. For a phone or tablet, confirm that the store’s app is available for your operating system.
- Decide whether downloads are essential. If yes, look for a DRM-free designation and read the listing’s format notes. If no, an app or browser-only service may be simpler.
- Check the business model. Buying creates an account-linked library; borrowing creates a time-limited loan; a subscription, where offered, has its own access terms. Do not treat these models as interchangeable.
- Inspect DRM at title level. Store-wide assumptions are unsafe. eBooks.com explicitly says protection varies by title, and the other stores also apply publisher-specific restrictions.
- Confirm geography. Rights and catalog availability can differ by country. NOOK’s terms specifically make country and device relevant, and other stores can have publisher or regional restrictions.
- Plan for re-downloads. Keep account credentials, receipts and any required authorization software. NOOK’s terms warn that rights changes can affect future downloads.
How to avoid an incompatible purchase
Use this pre-check every time you buy outside your main ecosystem:
- Write down the exact target device and operating system.
- Find the listing’s format: EPUB, PDF or another file type.
- Find the DRM label: DRM-free, Adobe DRM, Readium LCP, Social DRM or a proprietary app restriction.
- Read the seller’s device statement, not just the format name.
- Check whether transfer requires a computer, ADE, a cable or only the retailer’s app.
- Confirm that the title is sold in your country.
- Save the receipt and product-page details.
If any one of these answers is missing, postpone the purchase until the seller or publisher provides a clear compatibility statement.
Common problems and practical fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The book downloads but will not open | Unsupported format or DRM | Return to the listing’s format and DRM section; install the required authorized app or ADE if the seller specifies it. |
| The file opens on a computer but not an eReader | The eReader is not authorized or the transfer route is unsupported | Confirm the device is supported, authorize it in the required software and repeat the documented transfer process. |
| A Kindle or NOOK cannot open an outside purchase | Proprietary DRM or an unsupported delivery route | Check whether the title is explicitly DRM-free and whether the seller names that device. Do not rename or convert a protected file to bypass restrictions. |
| A purchase disappeared from the library | Wrong account, regional rights or changed availability | Sign in with the purchasing account, verify country settings and contact the retailer if the title is no longer offered for re-download. |
| A mobile app lacks a format listed for an eReader | Platform-specific format support | Read the app’s separate iOS or Android format guidance rather than relying on the eReader/Desktop list. |
Accessibility and reading features: verify instead of assuming
The available vendor guidance establishes formats, DRM and device routes, but it does not provide a complete, current comparison of accessibility features across these services. If you need text resizing, screen-reader support, contrast controls, dyslexia-friendly presentation or keyboard navigation, test the exact app and title on your device before building a large library. A reflowable EPUB, a fixed-layout file and a scanned PDF can behave very differently even when sold by the same retailer.
A practical recommendation by reader type
| If you are… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Buying for a dedicated eReader | Kobo, after checking DRM | It combines a store and eReader ecosystem and documents broad common-format support. |
| Trying to build a downloadable, less locked-in library | eBooks.com listings marked DRM-free | The store exposes a DRM-free filter and title-level format details. |
| Happy reading only in an app or browser | Bookshop.org ebooks | Its supported reading locations are clearly stated, provided Kindle/NOOK transfer is not required. |
| Already using NOOK hardware or apps | NOOK | Your purchases remain in the ecosystem designed for that account and device family. |
| Buying professional library or information-science material | ALA eEditions | Its specialist catalog and documented PDF/vendor requirements fit that subject area. |
| Seeking temporary access rather than ownership | Your library’s Libby service | Borrowing can avoid a purchase, subject to local collection and device rules. |
Bottom line
There is no universal replacement that makes every ebook portable. Kobo is the most balanced alternative for dedicated eReader owners; eBooks.com is the most useful starting point for DRM-free hunting; Bookshop.org works when app or browser reading is acceptable; NOOK suits readers committed to its account ecosystem; and specialist or library services win when subject matter or borrowing matters more than a single store. Check the individual title’s DRM, format, region and transfer path before you pay.
