Quick comparison: which method should you send?
| Method | Best use | What the recipient gets | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| what3words | Spoken directions, trailheads, entrances and rendezvous points | A human-readable three-word address for a precise square, with sharing and navigation handoffs | The recipient needs a what3words resolver, app or compatible integration; similar-sounding words must be read back carefully |
| Plus Codes | Rural or informal addressing | A short, coordinate-derived digital address that can be written down or printed | The most familiar workflow is inside Google’s ecosystem, so confirm the recipient can resolve the code |
| Decimal latitude/longitude | Cross-provider sharing and technical users | Provider-neutral numbers that mapping tools can interpret directly | Numbers are easy to transpose; include hemisphere signs and enough decimal precision |
| Apple Maps pin or ETA | People using iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch | A pinned place or an ETA shared through Apple Maps | The smoothest experience is within Apple’s ecosystem |
| HERE WeGo link | A coordinate link that can include a label or route waypoints | A pin with an optional custom title, or a route built from coordinate waypoints | The available evidence establishes link mechanics, not comparative map coverage or privacy performance |
| Organic Maps bookmark or track | Offline and privacy-conscious map use | A shared bookmark or track on supported iOS and Android workflows | The documented material does not establish universal live-location sharing |
Why a normal map pin is not always enough
A pin identifies a point on a screen, but it does not automatically give that point a name that people can reliably communicate. what3words notes that ordinary pins can be difficult to describe over the phone, write down or enter into a speech-recognition system such as an in-car navigator. Read its explanation at what3words’ comparison of pins and three-word addresses.

That distinction matters at places with no street number, multiple entrances or poor map labeling. A pin dropped on a large park may land near the wrong side of a fence. A rural property may have one postal address but several gates. A festival, construction site or trailhead may be known locally by a landmark rather than a road name. In each case, share the exact point and describe what the point represents.

Choose the format that matches the recipient
what3words for a point people must say or type
what3words assigns a three-word address to a precise square. Its app supports sharing, offline lookup and handoffs to Apple Maps and Google Maps, as described in the what3words App Store listing. This makes it particularly useful when a caller has to dictate a location or when a printed instruction must fit in a small space.
Use it for a north entrance, a meeting point beside a trail, a roadside pickup area or an emergency rendezvous. Send the three words in their displayed order and include a plain-language label such as north entrance or blue gate. Because words can be misheard, ask the recipient to repeat them back or send the written share as well as saying it aloud.
what3words is not a replacement for a live-location feed. The three-word address identifies the square you selected; it does not show where your phone will move next.

Plus Codes for places with no conventional address
Google describes Plus Codes as useful where there are no street addresses, no streets at all or only vague addressing. They are designed as short digital addresses that can be shared, written down or printed. See Google Maps Plus Codes support and Google’s explanation, No address? No problem. Share your location using Plus Codes.
Choose a Plus Code when the recipient is comfortable resolving it in Google Maps or another compatible tool and you want something more compact than a long coordinate pair. It works well for a rural driveway, an unmarked campsite or a location that needs to be put on a paper form. Send the complete code and, if the workflow requires it, the nearby town or locality so the recipient has context when resolving it.
A Plus Code is still a fixed location. It does not reveal your future movement and should not be presented as a substitute for real-time tracking.

Decimal coordinates when provider neutrality matters
Latitude and longitude are the most portable option. HERE’s documented sharing format accepts latitude and longitude directly, can display a pin and can include a custom title; its route format accepts coordinate waypoints. The instructions are at HERE WeGo’s share-location documentation and share-route documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSend coordinates as two labeled values, for example latitude, longitude, rather than as an unlabeled pair. Keep the minus sign where it belongs, use a leading minus for west or south when that is the format you are using, and include enough decimal precision for the size of the place you are identifying. A single transposed digit can move the pin a long way, so paste the values instead of retyping them when possible.
Coordinates are the best fallback when you do not know whether the recipient uses Apple Maps, Google Maps, HERE WeGo or another mapping application. The recipient can paste the pair into a compatible map, then verify the imagery and surrounding roads before setting out.
Apple Maps pin or ETA for Apple-device groups
If everyone involved uses Apple devices, an Apple Maps pin is often the least confusing option. Apple says Maps can be used without signing in, pinned data sync is end-to-end encrypted, and Apple cannot see a shared ETA location. Those statements appear in Apple’s Maps privacy documentation.
Use a pin for one fixed meeting point. Use ETA sharing only when the recipient genuinely needs to know when you are expected to arrive. A pin and an ETA solve different problems: the first identifies a destination, while the second can expose an ongoing journey and its timing.
HERE WeGo links when a labeled coordinate handoff helps
HERE WeGo’s documented location-sharing format can include exact coordinates, a pin and a custom title. That title is valuable when the coordinate alone is ambiguous: label it north gate, loading entrance, campsite reception or trailhead parking. For a multi-stop trip, the route-sharing format accepts coordinate waypoints, so the recipient can receive the intended sequence rather than only the final point.

Organic Maps for offline bookmarks and tracks
Organic Maps’ FAQ documents sharing bookmarks or tracks and location workflows on iOS and Android. Review the current instructions at the Organic Maps FAQ. This is a sensible choice when the recipient needs an offline reference, such as a backcountry waypoint or a saved route.
Do not assume that sharing a bookmark or track is the same as sharing your live position. The cited material documents bookmark and track sharing; it does not establish universal real-time location sharing across devices.
Step-by-step: share a fixed point without a street address
Option 1: send a what3words address
- Open what3words and move the map to the exact spot, such as the gate, trailhead sign or meeting landmark.
- Select the square that represents the point you want people to reach. Do not choose a nearby road simply because it is easier to find.
- Copy or share the displayed three-word address through your messaging app.
- Add a human description: north entrance, second gate, visitor parking or the bench beside the bridge.
- Ask the recipient to repeat the three words if you dictated them, and have them open the location before traveling.
- If navigation is needed, use the app’s handoff to Apple Maps or Google Maps, then check that the resulting pin is at the intended entrance.
Option 2: create and send a Plus Code
- Open the map at the desired point and display its Plus Code using the Plus Codes workflow.
- Copy the complete code exactly; do not omit characters or replace it with a nearby named place.
- Send the code with the nearest town, park or landmark if the recipient may need geographic context to resolve it.
- Tell the recipient what the code marks, such as the east gate or boat launch.
- Have the recipient resolve the code and inspect the pin before departure, especially where several roads or entrances are close together.
Option 3: send decimal latitude and longitude
- Drop a pin at the exact location in your map application.
- Copy the displayed latitude and longitude rather than typing them from memory.
- Label the order clearly as latitude, longitude and preserve all signs and decimal digits supplied by the app.
- Paste the pair into the recipient’s map or into a HERE WeGo coordinate link.
- Include the point’s operational label and any access note, such as use the gravel gate on the north side.
- Ask the recipient to send a screenshot of the resolved pin when a wrong entrance would cause a delay or safety problem.
How to share a route or moving arrival
Use a coordinate route for multiple stops
A fixed coordinate is not enough when the recipient must follow a sequence of places. HERE WeGo’s route-sharing format accepts coordinate waypoints, allowing you to define stops by position rather than by street address. Put the stops in travel order and name the route or each important waypoint where the interface allows it. Verify that the route begins at the correct access road; a mathematically accurate point can still be on the wrong side of a river, fence or restricted entrance.
Use ETA sharing only for an ongoing trip
An ETA is appropriate when someone needs your expected arrival time, not merely the destination. Keep the scope and duration clear to the recipient, and stop sharing when the trip is over if the app provides that control. A static pin, Plus Code, what3words address or coordinate does not continuously expose your device.
Google’s help page for real-time location sharing lists information that may be visible in that feature, including your name, profile photo, recent device location, battery state and arrival or departure notifications. Read the current details at Google Maps Help on real-time location sharing. That is materially different from sending one fixed point.

Label the point so the recipient reaches the right entrance
The coordinate or code answers where the map point is; the label answers what the person should do when they arrive. Use a short, physical description tied to the site:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Access: north entrance, service gate, pedestrian entrance or driveway marked 12.
- Landmark: red kiosk, trailhead sign, bus shelter or bridge crossing.
- Direction: approach from the west, park outside the barrier or walk 100 metres from the lot.
- Purpose: delivery drop-off, meeting point, ambulance rendezvous or boat launch.
- Verification: ask the recipient to confirm the pin sits on the intended side of a road, fence, river or building.
When a service supports a custom title, use that title for the operational name and keep access instructions in the message. A title such as event location is less useful than south gate, next to the ticket booth.
Privacy: fixed sharing versus live tracking
A static location share identifies one selected point. It may reveal where a meeting, home, vehicle or workplace is, but it does not by itself provide a stream of future positions. Send only the precision the recipient needs and avoid posting a private residence publicly when a nearby meeting point will work.
Live sharing is different. It can reveal an ongoing device location and additional metadata such as the name, photo, battery state and arrival or departure notifications documented by Google’s help page. Choose a defined recipient, a clear purpose and a limited sharing period. For a simple rendezvous, send a code, coordinate or pin instead of enabling continuous tracking.
Apple’s Maps privacy page states that sign-in is optional, pinned data sync is end-to-end encrypted and Apple cannot see a shared ETA location. Those are Apple’s stated policies for its Maps features; they do not guarantee that every recipient uses Apple Maps or that every third-party mapping app handles data the same way.

Common failures and how to fix them
The recipient sees a blank or wrong map
Send the raw coordinate pair as a second format and state the latitude/longitude order. A link may open in an app that the recipient does not have, while coordinates can be pasted into another compatible map.
Best Value
The code resolves to the wrong locality
Include the nearest town or region with a Plus Code, then have the recipient confirm the displayed area. Do not shorten a code unless the recipient’s resolver explicitly supports the shortened form in that context.
The words were misheard
Send the written what3words share, spell each word, and ask for a read-back. Add the landmark and entrance label so the recipient has a second check.
The pin is on the correct property but the wrong entrance
Move the point to the actual access location, not the center of the property. Add north, south, gate, trailhead or loading entrance to the message and inspect satellite or map context before sending.
Recommended Free Tools
The recipient expects live tracking from a static pin
State explicitly whether the message is a fixed destination or an ETA/live share. If movement must be visible, use the platform’s real-time feature and explain what information it may expose; otherwise, keep the share static.
There is no signal at the destination
Send the location before departure, save an offline bookmark or track where supported, and provide a written description. what3words documents offline lookup in its app listing, while Organic Maps documents sharing bookmarks and tracks; neither fact means every route or map layer will be available offline in every place.
A reliable message template
Use one primary format and one backup, rather than sending several unexplained links:
Meet at: north entrance, beside the visitor kiosk
Primary location: [what3words address, Plus Code, or latitude, longitude]
Backup: [the other format]
Access: approach from the west; do not use the service gate
Please reply with a screenshot after the pin opens.
Replace the bracketed fields with the actual values in your map app. Keep the operational instructions outside the code or address so a recipient can copy the location without accidentally copying extra words.
Bottom line
For the easiest spoken, human-readable address, send what3words. For a compact address in an unaddressed rural or informal place, send a Plus Code. For maximum compatibility, send decimal latitude/longitude, optionally wrapped in a HERE WeGo link with a custom title. Use an Apple Maps pin or ETA when the group already relies on Apple devices, and use Organic Maps bookmarks or tracks when offline sharing is the priority. Whatever you choose, label the exact entrance and verify the pin before anyone travels.
