Best Alternatives to GNOME Shell Weather Extensions for Linux Desktops (2026 Compatibility Guide)

The best alternative depends on where you want weather to appear. Weather O’Clock puts the current condition inside the clock pill; Weather or Not adds a clickable panel indicator; Desktop Widgets (Desktop Clock) places a movable weather widget on the desktop; Advanced Weather Companion offers several listed forecast providers and more detail; and GNOME Weather works as a standalone app with optional Shell search integration. Compatibility is tied to your exact GNOME Shell release, so treat extension listings as version-specific rather than assuming that an extension that works on one Linux distribution works on all of them.

Choose by display style first

GNOME weather tools fall into three practical groups. Panel extensions keep a glanceable condition visible beside the system clock. Desktop-widget extensions make weather part of the wallpaper area and let you choose its position. A standalone application keeps the panel uncluttered and opens only when you need a forecast; GNOME Weather can also expose recently searched cities through Activities Overview search.

Weather or Not Current condition in the top panel; click opens GNOME Weather Yes, plus an active internet connection Version 49 active for Shell 45–49; version 51 active for Shell 50–51
Desktop Widgets (Desktop Clock) Movable desktop widget The listing does not require it Version 16.1 active for Shell 45–51
Advanced Weather Companion Extension interface with configurable forecast detail The listing does not require it Version 30 active for Shell 45–50

The compatibility entries above were observed in GNOME app and extension listings checked on 2026-10-13. Listings can change, and an active extension release is not necessarily installed automatically by your distribution.

Weather O’Clock: the most compact panel treatment

Weather O’Clock is designed for people who want a condition visible without adding a separate indicator. It places current weather inside the pill next to the clock, so the panel keeps its familiar shape while gaining a small weather readout.

What you need

  • GNOME Weather must be installed.
  • Your installed GNOME Shell release must match an active extension version in the listing.

The listing snapshot showed versions 50.5 and 50.4 active for GNOME Shell 45 through 50. Those numbers describe the listing at that time, not a permanent compatibility guarantee.

Who should choose it

Choose Weather O’Clock when your priority is the smallest possible persistent indicator and you are comfortable using GNOME Weather as its underlying application. It is less suitable if you want to select among several weather providers, inspect extensive hourly data directly in the panel, or move the weather display around the desktop.

Installation and verification

  1. Install GNOME Weather using the package source supported by your Linux distribution.
  2. Open the Weather O’Clock entry in the GNOME Extensions listing.
  3. Check the entry for your exact GNOME Shell major version, not merely the extension’s highest version number.
  4. Install or enable the listed release, then confirm that the weather appears inside the clock pill.
  5. If no active release matches your Shell version, leave the extension disabled rather than forcing an incompatible package.

Weather or Not: a panel indicator that opens the app

Weather or Not shows the current condition in the panel and opens GNOME Weather when clicked. Its listing identifies it as a fork of Weather O’Clock, but its workflow is distinct: the panel indicator is a direct launch point for the full application.

Requirements and compatibility snapshot

The listing explicitly requires GNOME Weather and an active internet connection to retrieve and display weather information. At the time checked, version 49 was active for Shell 45–49, while version 51 was active for Shell 50–51. Verify the current entry before installing because extension status and supported Shell releases are volatile.

When it is the better fit

This option suits users who want a recognizable, separate panel indicator rather than weather merged into the clock. It also makes sense if clicking the condition to open the detailed GNOME Weather window is part of your routine. It is not a self-contained offline display: without GNOME Weather or an internet connection, the listed behavior cannot function properly.

Setup checklist

  • Install GNOME Weather first.
  • Confirm that your network connection is available.
  • Open the Weather or Not listing and match its active release to your Shell major version.
  • Enable the extension and click its panel indicator to verify that GNOME Weather launches.

Desktop Widgets (Desktop Clock): weather on the desktop

Desktop Widgets (Desktop Clock) is the choice for users who want weather away from the top panel. Its desktop framework can show weather alongside digital or analog clocks, static text, images and command output. Widgets can be repositioned by dragging.

Compatibility and interaction constraint

The listing showed version 16.1 active for Shell 45 through 51. It also warns that the Desktop Icons extension may interfere with moving widgets. If a widget appears but will not move, temporarily disable Desktop Icons, reposition the widget, then decide whether you can keep both extensions enabled without conflicts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best use cases

A desktop widget is useful on a large monitor, a workstation with an uncluttered panel, or a setup where you want weather near a calendar or clock. It is less convenient when windows cover the desktop most of the day. Because the widget framework supports several content types, it may require more arrangement than a single-purpose panel indicator.

Moving a widget

  1. Install the active Desktop Widgets release that lists support for your Shell version.
  2. Add or enable the weather widget through the extension’s configuration interface.
  3. Drag the widget to the desired desktop position.
  4. If dragging does nothing, temporarily disable Desktop Icons and try again.
  5. Re-enable Desktop Icons only after you have confirmed that the resulting interaction remains usable.

Advanced Weather Companion: provider choice and forecast detail

Advanced Weather Companion is aimed at readers who want more than one current-condition value. Its listing advertises dynamic location detection, a manual location override, temperature-unit selection, weather insights, alerts, trend analysis, and hourly and daily forecasts.

Providers named by the listing

  • Open-Meteo
  • Meteosource
  • Wttr.in
  • OpenWeatherMap
  • WeatherAPI

The active version 30 listing covered Shell 45 through 50. The page also mentions external geocoding and location services. Those feature descriptions identify configuration choices offered by the extension; they do not independently establish provider accuracy, privacy practices, uptime or continued availability.

When provider selection matters

Provider choice can be useful when a service is unavailable in your region, when you need a particular unit system, or when you want to compare the presentation of hourly and daily data inside one extension. It also gives you a manual-location fallback when automatic detection selects the wrong place. The listing alone does not tell you which provider will be most accurate for your location, so do not select one on the assumption that it is objectively superior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical setup sequence

  1. Open the extension listing and confirm that an active release supports your Shell version.
  2. Install the extension and open its preferences.
  3. Allow dynamic location detection if it identifies your intended city; otherwise use the manual location override.
  4. Select a listed provider and choose your temperature unit.
  5. Review the hourly, daily, alert and trend settings so the panel contains only the information you will use.
  6. If location data is wrong or forecasts do not load, switch to the manual location field or another listed provider and check your network connection.

GNOME Weather: the no-persistent-indicator baseline

GNOME Weather is the simplest alternative when you do not want another always-visible Shell element. The GNOME Project describes it as a small application for current conditions in a city or elsewhere, with detailed forecasts up to seven days and hourly details for the current day and the next day.

Search integration

Integration with GNOME Shell search is optional. When enabled, recently searched cities can appear in Activities Overview search, allowing you to find current conditions without keeping a panel indicator active.

Release information

The GNOME application page lists GNOME Weather 50.0 as the newest release, released on 2026-03-12. Application release numbering and GNOME Shell extension compatibility are separate: installing GNOME Weather 50.0 does not by itself make every weather extension compatible with your Shell version.

Who should use it

Use GNOME Weather alone if you check weather occasionally, want seven-day and near-term hourly detail in one window, or prefer not to maintain an extension. It is also the required foundation for Weather O’Clock and Weather or Not, so installing it first is sensible even if you later add a panel extension.

Extensions that require extra caution

OpenWeather Refined

The OpenWeather Refined listing says: “This extension has been retired, use “SimpleWeather” instead.” It describes support for current or specified locations and lists OpenWeatherMap.org, WeatherAPI.com and VisualCrossing.com as possible services. The page displayed active entries for Shell 45–47, but that should not be interpreted as proof of current maintenance when the extension is marked retired. Treat the retirement notice as the decisive status signal and look for a maintained replacement whose listing supports your Shell release.

Original OpenWeather

The original OpenWeather extension is described as showing weather for any location in GNOME Shell. Its displayed active releases were for Shell 42, 43 and 44, making it a poor default for newer GNOME installations unless its listing has since gained a matching release. Requests in user reviews for newer GNOME support are comments, not authoritative compatibility confirmation.

How to check compatibility before installing any extension

GNOME Shell extensions are not generic Linux packages with one universal compatibility promise. A distribution can ship a different Shell major release, and an extension can be active for one release while inactive for another.

  1. Find your GNOME Shell major version in your desktop’s system information or distribution documentation.
  2. Open the extension’s current GNOME Extensions listing or its linked project homepage.
  3. Look for an active release that explicitly names your Shell major version.
  4. Check whether the listing adds prerequisites such as GNOME Weather or an internet connection.
  5. Read interaction warnings, especially those involving other extensions such as Desktop Icons.
  6. Install only after the match is confirmed, and remember that the listing can change after this article’s 2026-10-13 snapshot.

Do not infer compatibility from an extension’s version number alone. For example, a release numbered 51 is not automatically a Shell 51 release unless the listing says so.

A decision guide by reader priority

Your priority Most suitable starting point Reason
Weather integrated into the clock with minimal panel change Weather O’Clock Current weather is placed inside the clock pill.
A separate panel indicator that opens a detailed app Weather or Not Clicking the indicator opens GNOME Weather.
A draggable element on the desktop Desktop Widgets (Desktop Clock) Weather can be placed with other movable desktop widgets.
Several listed providers, alerts and trend-oriented detail Advanced Weather Companion Its listing names five providers and multiple forecast features.
No persistent weather indicator GNOME Weather The app provides current conditions, seven-day forecasts and optional Shell search integration.

What the available evidence does not establish

The listings and GNOME application page do not provide a controlled comparison of forecast accuracy, refresh intervals, memory consumption, reliability, privacy protections or user satisfaction. Download totals and user comments are not equivalent to compatibility testing or quality measurements. Consequently, the options above are organized by display style, requirements and listed features rather than ranked by forecast performance.

Linux packaging also varies by distribution. An extension may be available through the GNOME Extensions site while a distribution’s own package repositories lag behind, omit it or apply different integration choices. Check the source you intend to use and verify the installed Shell release after major desktop upgrades.

Troubleshooting common failures

The extension does not appear after installation

Confirm that the extension is enabled and that its listing includes your exact Shell major version. If the version is unsupported, installing an older release may not solve the problem; use a maintained alternative with a matching entry instead.

Weather is blank or stale

For Weather or Not, verify both GNOME Weather and the active internet connection because the listing names both as requirements. For Advanced Weather Companion, check the selected provider, location setting and network connection. A blank result alone does not prove that the extension is broken or that another provider is more accurate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A desktop widget cannot be dragged

Follow the Desktop Widgets listing’s warning: temporarily disable Desktop Icons, move the widget, and then test whether both extensions can remain enabled without interfering with one another.

An extension stopped working after a GNOME upgrade

Return to the current listing and check for a new active release supporting the upgraded Shell major version. Do not rely on the extension’s previous compatibility or on a user review requesting support; those are not substitutes for an active listing entry.

Bottom line for choosing in 2026

Start with the interface you actually want: Weather O’Clock for an unobtrusive clock-integrated condition, Weather or Not for a clickable panel indicator, Desktop Widgets for a movable desktop display, Advanced Weather Companion for listed provider and forecast choices, or GNOME Weather for a standalone app and optional search integration. Before enabling anything, match the current listing to your installed GNOME Shell release and follow any prerequisites or interaction warnings. That version check is more dependable than treating any extension as a universal Linux solution.
