The strongest alternatives to eRoaming for a travel eSIM are Airalo, Holafly, Nomad and Saily. None is established as the best choice for every itinerary: the right plan depends on the countries you will visit, whether one regional or global plan covers them, the data allowance and validity, hotspot rules, voice and SMS support, and the complete checkout price. Compare those items for your exact dates and phone before buying.
What eRoaming offers
A TechRadar review dated 8 October 2026 describes eRoaming as a UK-based travel eSIM provider. It sells local, regional and global plans through its website and app. That gives a useful baseline for comparison: an alternative should be judged on the same plan scope, not on a headline price for a different country or validity period.

A travel eSIM normally supplies mobile data through a partner network in the destination country. You install a digital SIM profile, select it for mobile data and keep your physical SIM available for calls or texts if your phone and carrier support that arrangement. The details that matter are the terms attached to the specific plan, not simply the provider’s name.

Quick comparison of the main alternatives
| Provider | What current evidence establishes | Plan scope | Data and fair-use detail | Coverage evidence | Voice, SMS and hotspot | Comparable price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| eRoaming | UK-based provider described in a TechRadar review published 8 October 2026 | Local, regional and global plans | Not stated in the available evidence; check each plan | Destination list must be checked for the selected plan | Not stated; verify before purchase | No matched itinerary price established |
| Airalo | Provider result identifies local, regional and global offerings | Local, regional and global plans | Allowance, validity, top-ups and speed rules vary by plan; not stated here | Airalo claims coverage in 200+ locations; confirm the actual country list | Not stated for a matched plan; check hotspot and any calling or texting add-on | No fair same-trip price comparison established |
| Holafly | Recent comparison coverage identifies it as an alternative and describes an unlimited-data option | Plan scope varies by destination; verify whether a regional option covers your route | Specific limits and fair-use conditions were not verified | Check every destination and the network used | Hotspot allowance and voice/SMS terms were not verified | No fair same-trip price comparison established |
| Nomad | Recent comparison coverage identifies it as a travel eSIM alternative | Not established in the available evidence for a particular itinerary | Not stated; inspect allowance, validity, speed policy and top-ups | Check the destination matrix on the offer you intend to buy | Not stated; verify tethering and any number, call or SMS inclusion | No fair same-trip price comparison established |
| Saily | Recent review coverage identifies it as an alternative; TechRadar’s 2026 review result reports 200+ destinations | Not established in the available evidence for a particular itinerary | Not stated; check data, validity and any fair-use policy | “200+ destinations” is a secondary report of a provider claim, not an independent market statistic; verify your countries | Not stated; check hotspot and voice/SMS terms | No fair same-trip price comparison established |
The table deliberately leaves unverified cells open. Travel eSIM prices, network partners, taxes, validity rules and fair-use policies change frequently. A provider cannot be called the cheapest, or the best, without pricing the same countries, dates, data requirement and device at the same time.

How to choose an alternative for your itinerary
1. Match every country, including short stopovers
Write down every place where the phone may need data, including an airport layover, ferry stop or day trip across a border. A plan that covers only the main destination can leave you without service during a transfer. For Airalo, “200+ locations” is a provider coverage claim, not a guarantee that every plan includes every location. Saily’s reported “200+ destinations” has the same limitation: open the actual destination list and read the plan’s included countries.
Where the provider discloses partner networks, note the network name and compare it with local coverage expectations. If no network is named, treat that as an unresolved point rather than assuming the strongest network in the country.
2. Decide between local, regional and global scope
- Local plan: Usually the simplest fit for a single-country trip. Check whether a border crossing requires buying a second eSIM or whether the same profile can be extended.
- Regional plan: Useful for a multi-country route when every stop appears in the same region’s inclusion list. Confirm that the plan remains active when you cross borders and that each country receives service.
- Global plan: Appropriate only when the itinerary spans regions and the broader coverage offsets its price. Verify the individual country list; “global” does not mean every territory is automatically included.
eRoaming, Airalo and the available review description of eRoaming explicitly use local, regional and global categories. For Nomad, Holafly and Saily, select the exact offer and confirm its scope rather than inferring it from the provider’s general catalogue.

Separate essential use from heavy use. Maps, messaging and occasional email generally need far less data than video streaming, cloud backups or laptop tethering. Record an expected daily amount and multiply it by the number of active days, then add a reserve for navigation and unexpected delays.
An “unlimited” label is not enough by itself. Holafly is described in recent comparison coverage as an unlimited-data option, but the specific plan limits and hotspot or fair-use conditions were not verified. Read whether full-speed data can be reduced after a threshold, whether the allowance resets daily, and whether tethering is excluded. For metered plans, check if a top-up is available before the balance expires.
4. Compare validity with the actual activation date
Some plans begin when installed, while others begin when the eSIM first connects to a supported network. The offer should state the trigger. Install too early if the validity clock starts at installation and you can lose days before departure; install too late if activation requires a stable Wi-Fi connection or a QR code that you cannot access in transit.

If you plan to connect a laptop, tablet or travel companion, look for an explicit tethering statement. A plan can provide data on the phone while blocking personal hotspot or applying a daily or total cap. Record the permitted method and limit in your comparison notes; do not infer hotspot support from an unlimited or large data allowance.
6. Check whether you need a phone number
Many travel eSIM offers are data-only. That is sufficient for internet calling, messaging apps, maps and authentication methods that do not require a new number. It is not equivalent to a plan with conventional voice and SMS. If a hotel, bank or local service sends a text message, confirm which SIM will receive it and whether your home carrier charges for roaming while its line remains active.
7. Compare the total checkout cost
Record the displayed price, currency, taxes, checkout fees, top-up cost and any required minimum purchase. Compare plans with the same countries, validity and data need. A lower headline price can become more expensive after a top-up, a second country plan or a short validity period. The available evidence does not establish a reliable universal cheapest provider, so avoid rankings based on different itineraries.
Provider-by-provider guidance
Airalo: broad plan architecture, but verify the destination list
Airalo is the clearest alternative supported by a provider result in the available evidence. Its regional-plan result describes local, regional and global coverage across 200+ locations. That range can simplify a one-country purchase or a multi-country route, but “200+ locations” is Airalo’s own coverage claim. It is not an independent market measurement and does not prove that a particular regional package covers your route.
For an Airalo shortlist, select the exact country or region, then record the included countries, data amount, validity, top-up rule, network information, hotspot policy and whether any voice or SMS facility is included. Compare that complete offer with an eRoaming plan of the same scope. If a route crosses regions, price a regional plan and a global plan separately; do not assume the global option is better value.

Holafly: consider it when predictable heavy data matters
Recent comparison coverage describes Holafly as an unlimited-data option. That positioning can suit a traveler who would rather avoid tracking a small allowance, especially when maps, uploads or streaming are frequent. However, the specific limits and hotspot or fair-use conditions were not verified in the available evidence.
Before buying, look for the full-speed policy, any daily allowance, the point at which speeds may be reduced, and the amount of data that can be shared through hotspot. Confirm whether the offer is local or regional and whether every border on your route is included. If you need ordinary calls or text messages, verify those separately because unlimited data does not imply a phone number.
Nomad: evaluate the individual offer rather than the brand label
Nomad is identified as a travel eSIM alternative in recent comparison coverage, but the available evidence does not establish a matched destination matrix, allowance, validity, hotspot rule or price. That is not a reason to reject it; it means the decision must be made from the exact plan page.

Saily: reported broad reach, with details still itinerary-dependent
TechRadar’s 2026 review result reports Saily coverage of 200+ destinations. This is a secondary report of a provider coverage claim, not an independent statistic. The number should therefore be used as a prompt to inspect the destination list, not as proof that your route is covered.
Check the exact data package, validity, top-up process, speed or fair-use language and tethering rule. If your trip spans several countries, verify that the regional or broader package includes each one and remains active after the border crossing. Confirm whether support for calls and SMS exists or whether the product is data-only.

A repeatable comparison worksheet
Use one row per provider and fill it in while viewing the offers on the same day. This prevents a large coverage number or an “unlimited” label from outweighing a missing requirement.
| Field | What to write down | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Itinerary | Every country, territory and transit stop | One omission can require a second plan or leave you offline |
| Scope | Local, regional or global; included-country list | Determines whether one eSIM works across borders |
| Data | Total allowance or unlimited wording; speed policy | Shows whether normal use and heavy use are supported |
| Validity | Number of days and activation trigger | Prevents the plan expiring before the return journey |
| Top-up | Availability, price and effect on expiry | A small initial plan may cost more after emergency top-ups |
| Hotspot | Allowed, blocked or capped; daily or total limit | Determines whether a laptop or companion can share data |
| Voice/SMS | Data-only or includes a number, calls or texts | Critical for services that require conventional SMS or calling |
| Networks | Named partner networks and selection options | Helps assess likely coverage and manual network choices |
| Total cost | Checkout total plus likely top-ups and taxes | Enables an honest same-trip comparison |
Which type of traveler should choose which plan?
Single-country weekend
Start with a local plan from each provider that serves the country. Prioritize a validity period that covers arrival and departure, then compare the smallest data packages that include a sensible reserve. A regional plan is unnecessary unless it costs no more and you expect a border crossing.
Multi-country regional holiday
Compare one regional plan against separate local plans. The regional option wins on simplicity only if every country is included, the validity spans the entire route and the data allowance is adequate. Separate plans can be useful when one country has unusually high data needs or is excluded from the regional package.
Long trip across regions
Price a global plan and a sequence of regional plans using the same active days and estimated data. Check whether a global plan has different speed, top-up or hotspot rules. The broadest label is not automatically the lowest-cost or highest-performing option.
Heavy data or frequent tethering
Shortlist plans with clearly stated high or unlimited data, then read the fair-use and hotspot language line by line. Holafly’s unlimited positioning makes it a candidate for this use, but the unverified limits mean you should not assume unrestricted phone or laptop data.
Work travel that requires a phone number
Put voice and SMS at the top of the worksheet. A data-only plan may still work with internet calling, but it will not replace a conventional number for every bank, hotel or business system. Keep the home line available if you need incoming texts, and confirm roaming charges with that carrier.

Installation and activation checklist
- Confirm compatibility. Check that the phone supports eSIM, is unlocked for other carriers and has enough free eSIM capacity. Exact support depends on the model, region and carrier.
- Save the plan details. Keep the QR code, activation code, support contact and plan name somewhere accessible offline. Do not delete the email or app record after installation.
- Install on reliable Wi-Fi. On an iPhone, the usual path is Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) > Add eSIM. On Android, the path is commonly Settings > Network & internet or Connections > SIMs followed by Add eSIM; labels vary by manufacturer and software version.
- Label the lines. Name the travel eSIM by destination and keep your primary line clearly identified. This reduces the chance of selecting the wrong line for data or calls.
- Set the travel eSIM for mobile data. If the phone offers a data-switching option, disable automatic switching unless you deliberately want the home line to take over. Keep data roaming enabled only on the line whose provider requires it, following that provider’s instructions.
- Activate at the right time. If the terms start on first network connection, install before departure but wait to enable the line until needed. If validity starts at installation, delay installation until you are ready to use the allowance.
- Test before leaving Wi-Fi. Turn off Wi-Fi briefly, confirm that a web page loads over the travel line and check which line is shown as the data connection. Restore your preferred settings afterward.
Common problems and practical fixes
The eSIM installed but shows no service
- Confirm that the travel line is turned on and selected for mobile data.
- Check that the country is included and that the plan has reached its activation date.
- Toggle airplane mode, restart the phone and allow a few minutes for network registration.
- If the plan lists supported networks, try automatic selection first and then a listed network manually.
- Contact the provider with the plan order and device details before deleting the eSIM; deletion can make recovery harder.
Mobile data works, but the home carrier is charging roaming
Review which line is selected for data and whether automatic data switching is enabled. Keep the home line available for required calls or texts only if you understand its roaming charges. Disable data roaming on the home line when it is not needed.
Hotspot cannot be enabled
Look for a tethering restriction in the plan terms. If hotspot is capped or blocked, changing a phone setting will not remove the provider restriction. Use the phone directly, choose a plan that explicitly permits tethering, or obtain a separate approved connection for other devices.
The plan expires before the trip ends
Check whether validity is measured in calendar days from activation, whether a top-up extends the expiry date and whether the provider allows an extension. If it does not, a second plan may be necessary; price that possibility before departure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsService stops after crossing a border
Verify that the new country is included in the plan rather than assuming a regional label covers it. Recheck the selected data line and network registration. If the country is excluded, purchase a compatible local or regional plan before relying on the connection.
How to avoid misleading “best” and “cheapest” claims
A fair comparison uses the same destination set, travel dates, data need, device and payment currency. Capture the checkout total on the same date because prices and terms are volatile. Include taxes or fees shown at checkout, the cost of likely top-ups and the effect of a plan expiring before the return journey.
Do not treat coverage counts as independent performance measurements. Airalo’s 200+ locations and Saily’s reported 200+ destinations describe breadth of listed availability, not speed, uptime or guaranteed service in each place. Likewise, “unlimited data” describes the marketing category until the plan’s speed, fair-use and hotspot clauses are read.
The most defensible result is therefore a conditional recommendation: choose the provider whose exact plan covers every stop, lasts for the whole trip, supplies the required data and tethering, meets voice/SMS needs and has the lowest transparent total for that matched package. If two plans meet those tests, prefer the one with clearer network information, top-up rules and support instructions.

Bottom line
Airalo, Holafly, Nomad and Saily are credible alternatives to investigate, but the evidence does not support one universal winner. Airalo has a documented local, regional and global structure and claims 200+ locations; Holafly is positioned around unlimited data; Nomad and Saily remain itinerary-specific choices, with Saily’s 200+ destinations reported by a 2026 review. Verify the live destination list, data and fair-use terms, validity trigger, hotspot policy, voice/SMS support and complete checkout cost immediately before purchase.
