Short answer: Start your bake-off with Gemini-4-Argon and GPT-6-Astra if you need the strongest measured performance on intuitive visual reasoning. Add GPT-6.1-Sol when video, charts, counting, or price matter, and Claude-Opus-5.5 when scientific-chart and social-inference work dominates. Choose OpenAI’s visual-reasoning stack when the model must crop, zoom, rotate, write code, search the web, or operate other tools. Keep Elorian’s Glimpse in the comparison for robotics, construction, manufacturing, dense video captioning, and open-vocabulary counting, where its published task profile is unusually relevant.
Those recommendations are based on the current Humanity’s Sixth Sense (HSS) results and the capabilities each vendor publicly describes. HSS is a useful signal, not a universal ranking: test a fixed sample of your own images and videos before switching production systems.

What Elorian Glimpse does
Glimpse is positioned as a model that reasons directly over images and video. Its stated use cases include dense scene understanding, visual search, video captioning, counting, temporal analysis, robotics, construction, engineering, and manufacturing. That description matters because a model can be excellent at naming objects while still failing questions such as what changed between two frames, which object is likely to move next, or whether a machine setup is safe.
Scene understanding beyond labels
Object detection answers “what is present.” Visual reasoning must also answer questions about relationships, intent, geometry, and cause. For example, a warehouse camera may show a pallet, a worker, and a forklift; a useful system needs to identify their positions, infer a potential collision path, and explain which observation supports the warning. A photo of a meeting may require identifying who is speaking, who has authority, or which person is addressing a question. These are inference tasks, not simple captioning.
Video and temporal analysis
Glimpse is explicitly aimed at tracking events across frames. A temporal model should distinguish an object that was already present from one that entered the scene, preserve identities as objects move, and answer “what happened before” or “what caused the change.” Video capability also depends on sampling strategy, clip length, frame rate, and whether audio is available. The HSS videos omit audio and transcripts, so benchmark results do not measure speech understanding.
Counting and fine-grained perception
Open-vocabulary counting is harder than counting large, isolated objects. The system may need to count partially occluded items, distinguish similar classes, or apply a user-defined category such as every damaged component. Elorian’s published comparison highlights counting results for Glimpse and the GPT models, which makes counting a sensible part of any migration test.
How the leading alternatives differ
Gemini-4-Argon: highest HSS score in the listed field
Gemini-4-Argon leads the cited HSS leaderboard with a pass rate of 55.40±4.20. That makes it the strongest first candidate when your definition of “understanding” includes intuitive spatial, causal, and social inference. The score should not be read as a guarantee that it will win on every image: HSS is an open-ended benchmark, and a narrow industrial dataset can produce a different ordering.
Choose it first for questions such as whether an object will fit through a gap, what person appears to control a situation, or what likely event follows a visible action. During evaluation, include difficult cases with occlusion, unusual viewpoints, and ambiguous social cues rather than only clean product photos.
GPT-6-Astra: broad reasoning and tool potential
GPT-6-Astra records 53.60±4.10 on HSS, second in the listed leaderboard. Elorian’s comparison table also reports strong results for BabyVision, HSS, temporal reasoning, and counting. That combination makes Astra a strong general replacement when the application mixes still images, video clips, counting questions, and multi-step explanations.

Astra becomes more attractive when the model must do something after perception: produce code, call a search tool, transform an image, or hand structured findings to another agent. Keep the perception prompt and the action policy separate in your tests so you can tell whether a failure came from seeing the scene or from choosing an action.
GPT-6.1-Sol: a practical option for video, charts, and cost-sensitive work
GPT-6.1-Sol scores 46.60±3.80 on HSS. Elorian reports strong chart, counting, and video results for it. That profile can be more useful than a higher overall score when your workload consists mainly of trend extraction from dashboards, counting inventory, or explaining what changed in a clip.
For a video pipeline, measure accuracy at the clip length and frame sampling rate you will actually pay for. A model that performs well on short clips may become slower or less reliable when asked to retain events across a long recording. Also calculate output-token costs: verbose frame-by-frame explanations can cost more than a concise event timeline.
Claude-Opus-5.5: chart and scientific reasoning
Claude-Opus-5.5 has an HSS score of 44.60±3.80. Elorian’s table describes strong scientific-chart reasoning, with weaker robotics and temporal results relative to its other capabilities. It is therefore a sensible candidate for laboratory plots, engineering graphs, and written interpretations that must state uncertainty and cite visible evidence.
Use chart tests that include logarithmic axes, multiple units, legends placed inside the plot, confidence bands, and annotations. Ask for the values used in a conclusion so you can detect a plausible-sounding answer that was not grounded in the plotted data.
OpenAI’s visual-reasoning stack: when seeing is only one step
OpenAI documents visual models that can crop, zoom, and rotate images and can use those transformations while reasoning. Its cited evaluation reports 95.7% on V*. That number comes from a different evaluation, so it must not be placed in the same ranking table as HSS scores. The practical distinction is workflow control: the model can inspect a difficult region at higher detail, rotate a document, write code, or use web and other tools rather than returning a single caption.
This stack is a strong fit for visual search, document inspection, coding from screenshots, and agents that need to gather context before deciding. Test whether tool calls actually improve your error rate; extra calls add latency, cost, and new failure modes.

What the HSS benchmark can—and cannot—tell you
Scale’s HSS announcement describes 522 open-ended tasks built from 288 images and 234 video clips. It evaluated 25 multimodal models from eight vendors and included 20 human participants. People scored 93.1%, the strongest listed model scored 53.6%, and the median model scored 30.9%. These gaps show that current systems remain far from human-level everyday visual understanding.
Scale reports that 94% of 8,573 model failures were traced to perception or latent inference, while 5% were attributed to faulty logic. Social understanding averaged 24.4% compared with 34.1% for the other three domains. Video was harder than images for 23 of 25 models, by an average of 7.3 percentage points. Those findings suggest that improving the prompt alone will not fix missed objects, incorrect relationships, or weak temporal memory.
The leaderboard reports pass@1 averages over three attempts per task, graded by Claude-Opus-5. It warns about judge dependence and possible training-data contamination. Because the videos omit audio and transcripts, the result is specifically about visual video reasoning. Treat the leaderboard as one evidence layer, then run your own representative set.
Scale summarizes the human advantage this way: "People can. A single glance tells us who holds authority in a room, whether a car will fit between two parked ones, or why a dog might get startled by birds." That is a useful reminder to include social, physical, and causal questions in evaluation instead of measuring only object labels.

For long or event-heavy video
Compare GPT-6-Astra, GPT-6.1-Sol, and Glimpse. Measure event recall, ordering, identity tracking, and timestamp accuracy. Record the frame sampling policy and clip duration because those settings can change the result as much as the model choice. If sound is essential, HSS does not answer that question; test an audio-capable pipeline separately.
For counting and inventory
Include Glimpse, GPT-6-Astra, and GPT-6.1-Sol. Test small objects, touching objects, repeated patterns, partial occlusion, and user-defined categories. Require the system to return a count plus a short description of the counting rule. A correct total obtained for the wrong category is a production error even when the number happens to match.

For charts and scientific figures
Compare Claude-Opus-5.5 with GPT-6.1-Sol and GPT-6-Astra. Include multi-panel figures, dual axes, error bars, logarithmic scales, legends, and plots where the visual trend conflicts with a tempting textual assumption. Ask for extracted values, units, and uncertainty before asking for a conclusion.
For robotics, construction, and manufacturing
Keep Glimpse in the bake-off because Elorian specifically targets these workflows. Add Astra or another tool-using stack for action planning, but separate safety-critical decisions from language generation. A model’s benchmark score cannot establish that it is safe to control machinery. Use hard stops, deterministic checks, and human approval for physical actions.

Test OpenAI’s visual-reasoning stack when the job involves crop, zoom, rotation, code execution, web lookup, or multiple tool calls. Compare end-to-end task completion, not just image-question accuracy. A slightly weaker standalone vision answer may still produce a better workflow if it can inspect evidence and recover from an initial mistake.
Price, context, and API economics
Elorian reports Glimpse pricing of $0.60 per million input tokens and $3.00 per million output tokens. OpenRouter lists the same rates for Glimpse through an OpenAI-compatible unified API and lists a 262,144-token context window. These are the only concrete per-token prices established for the models in this comparison; equivalent current prices for Gemini-4-Argon, GPT-6-Astra, GPT-6.1-Sol, and Claude-Opus-5.5 are not stated here.
| Glimpse usage example | Input cost | Output cost | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 million input tokens, 100,000 output tokens | $0.60 | $0.30 | $0.90 |
| 1 million input tokens, 200,000 output tokens | $0.60 | $0.60 | $1.20 |
| 10 million input tokens, 1 million output tokens | $6.00 | $3.00 | $9.00 |
The examples are arithmetic using the published Glimpse rates, not a quote for a complete application. Image and video tokenization varies by provider and resolution, so estimate from actual API usage rather than file size alone. Add storage, bandwidth, retries, tool calls, and any separate audio or OCR service to your budget.
Context size is useful only if the model can use the information reliably. A 262,144-token window may hold many frames or documents, but sending everything at once can increase latency and dilute attention. Compare a long-context prompt with a staged approach that first samples frames, then asks focused follow-up questions.

- Define the decisions. Write down the outputs that matter: count, event timestamp, chart value, hazard flag, caption, search result, or action recommendation.
- Freeze a representative set. Use images and videos from the real camera types, lighting, geography, languages, and object sizes in production. Keep a hidden holdout set for the final decision.
- Create a scoring rubric. Mark factual correctness, missed objects, false positives, temporal ordering, numerical error, explanation grounding, latency, and cost. For safety tasks, score unacceptable failures separately from ordinary mistakes.
- Normalize prompts and inputs. Keep resolution, frame sampling, crop policy, and question wording equivalent. If one system is allowed to call tools, record those calls and test a no-tool baseline.
- Run repeated attempts. HSS uses three attempts per task; repeating your own tests reveals unstable answers. Report mean accuracy and the worst-case failure pattern, not just the best run.
- Inspect failures manually. Label each error as perception, latent inference, temporal memory, arithmetic, instruction following, or tool use. This tells you whether to change the model, the input pipeline, or the prompt.
- Measure production behavior. Capture p50 and p95 latency, token usage, queue limits, timeout rate, retry behavior, and the percentage of requests that require human review.
- Re-test after updates. Model versions, prices, context limits, and regional availability change. Keep a small regression suite and rerun it whenever a provider changes the model or endpoint.
Implementation and migration considerations
Keep the model adapter replaceable
Use an internal request format containing the media reference, dimensions, frame timestamps, question, required output schema, and safety status. Convert that format to each provider’s API at the edge. This prevents application code from depending on one vendor’s message syntax and makes a controlled comparison possible.
Best Value
Separate perception from action
Ask the model to return observations and confidence before an action planner decides what to do. For example, a manufacturing inspection can first identify a missing guard and the image region supporting that finding; a deterministic rule can then stop a line. Do not let a fluent explanation substitute for a sensor interlock or human authorization.
Preserve evidence
Store the exact image or video frame, crop coordinates, prompt, model identifier, tool calls, and response used for a decision, subject to your privacy policy. This makes disagreements auditable and helps determine whether a later model update changed perception or reasoning.
Design for uncertainty
Require an explicit unknown or insufficient-evidence response when the image is blurred, cropped, backlit, or missing the relevant frame. A model that always answers can appear more capable in a demo while creating more dangerous false certainty in production.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The cited material does not establish identical data-retention policies, private deployment options, regional availability, latency guarantees, or service-level agreements for every alternative. Confirm those terms with each provider for your jurisdiction and data category before uploading confidential images, biometric data, factory footage, or customer documents.
Reproducibility also varies. Record the exact model name, version or snapshot, API date, system instructions, preprocessing, temperature or equivalent sampling controls, and tool configuration. Without that record, a score from one week may not be comparable with a score after a silent model update.
Common mistakes when replacing Elorian
- Choosing by one leaderboard number. HSS measures open-ended visual tasks; your application may be dominated by charts, tiny components, or long video.
- Comparing incompatible scores. HSS and the cited V* evaluation use different tasks and protocols. Do not present their percentages as a common ranking.
- Testing only clean images. Include glare, blur, occlusion, unusual camera angles, compression, and crowded scenes.
- Ignoring temporal setup. A video model cannot recover an event from frames that were never sampled or retained.
- Assuming counting is solved. Require category definitions and inspect borderline objects.
- Letting a tool call hide a perception error. Log the crop, search query, code, and intermediate result so you can see where the chain failed.
- Publishing an unqualified price. Token rates may exclude image tokenization, storage, bandwidth, retries, and tool usage, and prices can change.
- Skipping human review for high-impact actions. Benchmark success does not certify safety for robotics, construction, manufacturing, medical, legal, or security decisions.
