If you want better gear without focusing on Dreaming City activities, start with Portal Ops: choose the highest difficulty and Reward Rank you can complete reliably. For structured group PvE, check the Director’s weekly featured raids and dungeons; for a lower-pressure option, try destination Public Events and make them Heroic. The best pick depends on the reward tier shown in-game, your target gear, difficulty, repeatability, and access to the required content.
What “Powerful gear” means in Destiny 2 now
Bungie’s current terminology is broader than the older use of the phrase: “Powerful gear now loosely refers to anything that provides your Guardian with a Power boost.” In its 2026 FAQ, Bungie says the maximum Power cap will remain at 550, with no Power Level increase for Monument of Triumph. The same FAQ advises players to pay attention to activity rewards because different activities and difficulties grant different gear Power. Bungie Help’s Monument of Triumph FAQ

That means an old checklist of activities labeled “Powerful” may no longer be the most useful way to choose where to play. Compare the live reward display in the Director, then pick an activity whose tier and gear pool match your goal. Bungie’s public guidance does not provide a complete, current Dreaming City activity-by-activity loot table, so it does not establish that any particular Dreaming City activity is always worse than these alternatives.
Best alternatives, by what you want from a run
| Activity | Best fit | Reward and access notes |
|---|---|---|
| Portal Ops | Choosing a deliberate reward tier and repeating a manageable activity | Portal difficulty maps to reward tiers from Tier 1 through Tier 5. Select the highest tier you can reliably finish. |
| Featured raids and dungeons | Structured group PvE and high-quality activity rewards | Featured status rotates weekly. Some rewards are farmable, while certain Director Challenge and hidden-chest rewards are weekly locked. Content ownership may be required. |
| Destination Public Events | A simpler, lower-pressure destination activity | Base completion grants Tier 3 rewards; Heroic completion grants Tier 4, with a chance for a drop to upgrade to Tier 5. During a Distortion, event rewards increase by one tier. |
| Seasonal Hub challenges and Reward Pass | Daily or weekly objectives and ongoing progression | Bungie identifies Hub challenges and Reward Pass rewards as avenues for Power progression. Check the current requirements and rewards in-game. |
Tier and activity details above follow Bungie’s Director guide and its June 2026 update notes. The Public Event tiers are general destination guidance, not a Dreaming City-specific drop list.

- From the makers of the acclaimed hit game Destiny, comes the much-anticipated sequel
- An action shooter that takes you on an epic journey across the solar system

- To defeat the Red Legion and confront Ghaul, you must reunite humanity’s scattered heroes, stand together, and fight back to reclaim our home
Portal Ops: choose the highest repeatable tier
Portal difficulty is a useful starting point when you want to control the challenge rather than chase a weekly activity name. Bungie’s 2026 Director guide maps Portal difficulty and grade to rewards as follows:
| Difficulty | Grade | Reward tier |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | C | Tier 1 |
| Advanced | B | Tier 2 |
| Expert | A | Tier 3 |
| Master | A+ | Tier 4 |
| Grandmaster or Ultimate | S or S+ | Tier 5 |
Start at the level where you can finish consistently, then move up if the added difficulty does not make completion unreliable. A higher tier is not automatically a better use of time if failed or slow runs prevent you from earning rewards consistently. Portal activities are part of a broader hub that also includes Solo, Fireteam, Pinnacle, and Crucible Ops; select the activity and inspect its displayed rewards before launching.

Featured raids and dungeons: strong rewards, changing availability
Raids and dungeons suit players who want coordinated PvE and rewards tied to a specific activity. Under the June 2026 rules, featured raids and dungeons rotate weekly. Featured activities can have farmable rewards, but some Director Challenge and hidden-chest rewards remain limited to once per week. Check the live Director listing to see which activity is featured and which reward events are repeatable before you commit to a farming session. Bungie’s June 2026 update notes

Destination Public Events: make the event Heroic
For a more casual destination loop, Public Events offer a clear reward step: Bungie’s Director guide lists base completion at Tier 3 and Heroic completion at Tier 4, with each drop having a chance to upgrade to Tier 5. During a Distortion, the event’s reward tier increases by one. These are destination-wide rules; they do not establish the current item pool or reward tier of every Dreaming City activity. Check the event’s reward panel in the Director rather than assuming that older Blind Well or destination advice still applies.
Bungie identifies the Dreaming City as a destination with unique gear and names Blind Well among destination activities that distribute tiered rewards. Its June 2026 launch update also says pre-Edge of Fate destinations had their loot refreshed. Neither source gives a complete Dreaming City activity-by-activity loot table. Use Seasonal Hub objectives for structured progression
The Seasonal Hub is another route if you prefer objectives over repeating one activity. Bungie points to its daily and weekly challenges as support for Power growth, and the Reward Pass includes Power progression rewards. Review the current challenge requirements and reward display; older vendor-bounty checklists may not describe the current system. The Director guide explains the Hub and activity reward structure: Understanding the Director.
Target a weapon while earning gear
If your goal is a particular weapon, free Attunement can raise that weapon’s chance to drop from eligible activity rewards. It is a chance increase, not a guarantee, and it only applies when the weapon is in an eligible active loot pool. Bungie says Attunement can be changed without cost or limit. Check the current pool and set your target through the game’s Attunement interface; details are in Bungie’s Inventory, Attunement, Currencies, and Materials guide.
How to choose your next activity
- Open the Director and inspect the reward panel. Confirm the tier and gear pool for the activity you are considering, including any Dreaming City activity.
- Match the activity to your preferred play style. Choose Portal Ops for selectable difficulty, a Public Event for a lower-pressure destination run, a Hub challenge for an objective, or a featured raid or dungeon for group PvE.
- Check repeatability. For a featured raid or dungeon, distinguish farmable activity rewards from weekly-locked Director Challenge or hidden-chest rewards.
- Confirm access. Review expansion or Dungeon Key requirements where relevant before assembling a group.
- Set a gear target if applicable. Use Attunement for an eligible weapon, understanding that it improves odds rather than guaranteeing a drop.
- Choose a tier you can complete consistently. For Portal Ops, use the difficulty-to-tier mapping above and favor repeatable clears over a tier you cannot reliably finish.
Bungie’s current support guidance reflects the June 9, 2026 Monument of Triumph update; future hotfixes may change details. The featured raid and dungeon lineup rotates weekly, so verify the Director’s live reward display rather than relying on a static recommendation. Bungie support guide
