When an online game shuts down, the best replacement is not necessarily the newest game in the same genre. First identify what disappeared—matchmaking, user-created content, account services, or the entire online mode—then choose a supported game that preserves the activity you actually valued. The candidates below are starting points for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players, not guaranteed one-to-one substitutes.
Service status changes quickly. The platform and game examples in this guide were checked against information available on October 13, 2026; recheck the publisher’s current notice and the relevant console store before buying or downloading.

Establish what actually stopped working
A shutdown notice can remove one network feature while leaving the rest of the game intact. Treating every closure as a total loss can make you discard a game that still offers a worthwhile offline campaign or local mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFour common shutdown scopes
| What ended | What it affects | What may remain |
|---|---|---|
| Matchmaking or online multiplayer | Public matches, ranked play, invitations and online co-op | Campaigns, training, local multiplayer or bots, if the game included them |
| User-created content servers | Uploading, downloading, browsing or playing community levels and creations | Developer-made content and unrelated offline modes |
| Account or progression services | Cloud saves, inventories, unlocks, currencies and account sign-in | Unconnected local progress, depending on the title |
| The complete service or product | All server-dependent play and sometimes licensing checks | Only features the publisher explicitly says will continue |
Examples of partial closures
PlayStation’s notice for the PS3 versions of inFAMOUS 2 and inFAMOUS Festival of Blood schedules the user-generated-content servers to end on August 31, 2026. It specifically says that “Offline features, including the main campaign, will remain playable.” If the community level browser was the reason you played, that is a major loss; if you mainly played the story, the shutdown does not remove the whole game.
#1 Best Overall
The Destruction AllStars service notice similarly describes service removal while stating that Arcade Mode single-player challenges remain playable for returning players after the stated shutdown, although functionality may be affected. Keep the installed game until you have tested the mode you care about.
Dates are title- and platform-specific. EA’s service-update page lists Battlefield Hardline for PS4 and Xbox One with a June 22, 2026 date, while listing other older console games on different schedules. A date for one edition must not be applied automatically to a PC release, a newer console version or another game in the series.
Match the replacement to the lost experience
Start with the activity that made the discontinued game valuable. Theme, publisher and franchise name matter less than the loop you repeat every session.
Use these comparison questions
- Core loop: Were you exploring, building, racing, extracting loot, surviving as a team, or competing in short rounds?
- Social structure: Did you need drop-in co-op, a persistent crew, a large team, an asymmetric hunt, or a competitive ladder?
- Content source: Was the appeal developer-made missions, user-created levels, seasonal events or a persistent world?
- Platform and generation: Is the candidate listed for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, or only some of those systems?
- Cross-play: Do you need to play with people on another console family? A game being listed in a cross-platform guide is a useful lead, not proof that every mode or platform combination currently works.
- Access model: Is the current edition free, paid, or tied to a subscription? Confirm the present store listing and any online-multiplayer requirement for your console account.
- Service risk: Is the game actively supported today, and has the publisher published any end-of-service or offline-transition notice?
Write down the two features you would miss most. For example, “four-player social sailing” is a more useful target than “an adventure game,” while “short competitive matches with cross-play” is more useful than “a sports title.”
Candidate alternatives for common discontinued-game needs
| Player need | Candidate | Platforms identified in the dated listings | Mode or cross-play information | Access and group-size details | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Social adventure and co-op exploration | Sea of Thieves | PS5; Xbox One; Xbox Series X|S | Included in a cross-platform game guide; verify the current cross-play rules and service page | Current price, subscription requirement and crew limit were not established in the cited material; check the store and official game page | It can preserve a shared adventure feeling, but it is not a universal replacement for every online game |
| Arcade competition built around a sports-like loop | Rocket League | PS4; PS5; Xbox One; Xbox Series X|S | Listed with cross-play in the cited guide | Current access terms and party-size limits were not established in the cited material | Its vehicle-and-ball rules are very different from a conventional sports or action game |
| Asymmetric survival horror | Dead by Daylight | PlayStation and Xbox generations are listed in the cited guide | Check the current mode and cross-play status before purchase | Current access terms and group-size limits were not established in the cited material | It matches an unequal hunter-versus-survivor structure, not a conventional team deathmatch |
| Competitive battle-royale shooting | Fortnite | Presented as a cross-platform example; verify the exact current console editions | Cross-platform play is the reason it appears in the cited comparison | Current access terms and squad limits were not established in the cited material | Modes, rules and content change frequently, so compare the present offering rather than an older version |
| Competitive shooter with a battle-royale focus | Apex Legends | Presented as a cross-platform example; verify the current PlayStation and Xbox listings | Confirm the current cross-play implementation and supported modes | Current access terms and squad limits were not established in the cited material | Its hero abilities and movement create a different team dynamic from a traditional military shooter |
| Persistent shooter and MMO-style activity mix | Destiny 2 | Included in the current Xbox online-multiplayer listing and the cited cross-platform guide | Verify current platform support, cross-play and activity availability | Current access terms and activity-specific group sizes were not established in the cited material | It is a broad activity ecosystem, not a direct substitute for a single discontinued mode |
How each candidate maps to a discontinued-game experience
Sea of Thieves: choose it for a shared adventure
This is the most natural lead for players who valued sailing, exploration, emergent encounters and conversation with a regular crew. The dated guide lists it for PS5 and Xbox One/Series X|S, making it useful when your group spans those console generations. Confirm the current PlayStation edition, Xbox listing, cross-play behavior and service status before committing.
Rank #2
Do not expect the same progression, world design or creator tools as the game you lost. Its appeal is the social adventure loop: deciding where to go, dividing jobs and reacting to events together. If your old game was primarily a competitive arena, a user-level library or a tightly scripted campaign, this will feel substantially different even when the crew dynamic is familiar.
Rocket League: choose it for fast, repeatable competition
For a discontinued arcade sports title or any game built around short competitive rounds, Rocket League is a practical comparison point. The cited listing covers PS4, PS5 and Xbox One/Series X|S and identifies cross-play. Its matches are easy to understand but mechanically demanding, which makes it suitable when the lost feature was a repeatable contest with friends rather than a persistent world.

Test a few matches with your group before deciding that the pace and skill curve fit what you wanted to preserve.
Dead by Daylight: choose it for asymmetric tension
If the discontinued game’s defining feature was one powerful hunter facing several vulnerable players, Dead by Daylight is the closest candidate in this list by structure. The cited guide lists it across PlayStation and Xbox generations as a survival-horror game. Check the current modes, edition compatibility and cross-play behavior because those details can change.
It is not a replacement for cooperative survival against an environment, nor for a conventional four-versus-four shooter. The match works because the sides have different objectives and capabilities. That asymmetry, rather than the horror theme alone, is the part to compare.

- Engage in thrilling naval battles and equip a multitude of powerful weapons as you risk it all for the biggest loot.
- Sail the lawless seas solo, or team up with two friends or other players to partake in shareable contracts and rewards.
- Face cutthroat pirate hunters, deadly sea monsters, unpredictable weather, dangerous rogue waves, supernatural threats, and more as you explore a vast open world.
- Craft and sail up to 10 different ships at launch, each with unique perks to match your own personal playstyle.
- Grow your infamy and unlock resources and opportunities to get riskier contracts and upgrade your equipment.
Fortnite and Apex Legends: choose the one that fits your shooter loop
Both titles appear in the cited cross-platform examples for players seeking a competitive shooter or battle-royale experience. Use Fortnite as a broad starting point when you want a large, frequently changing ecosystem and multiple rule sets. Use Apex Legends when the appeal is squad-based shooting shaped by distinct character abilities and movement.

Check the current console store pages, supported modes, account requirements and cross-play settings. A player who valued a small tactical team, a persistent character build or a particular map rotation may find the battle-royale structure more different than expected.
Destiny 2: choose it for a persistent activity mix
Destiny 2 appears in both the current Xbox online-multiplayer listing and the cited cross-platform guide. It is worth investigating when the lost game combined shooting with long-term progression, cooperative activities and a continuing online world.
The trade-off is breadth. A persistent shooter ecosystem can offer several kinds of activity, but that does not recreate one discontinued raid, social hub, creator mode or competitive ruleset. Compare the exact activity you want, its current availability and any edition or expansion requirement instead of assuming that the game’s broad category guarantees a fit.
What can I play instead of [game] after its servers shut down?
Use this five-step substitution process for a title that is not named in this guide.
Rank #4
- Read the final service notice. Record the affected platform, region, mode and shutdown date. Look for separate statements about matchmaking, user-generated content, account services and offline play.
- Test the original after the stated date. Start the campaign, local mode, training mode and any downloaded content. Sony says prior purchases can remain downloadable for the foreseeable future, subject to the game’s existing online features and service availability; a downloadable product is not proof that its servers still work.
- Describe the lost loop in one sentence. Examples include “co-op exploration with a regular crew,” “asymmetric hunter-versus-team matches,” or “short cross-play competitive rounds.”
- Shortlist two candidates from the table. Check each one on the exact console generation your group owns. Treat third-party lists as discovery tools and confirm platform and service information on the publisher’s current page.
- Run a group trial before spending more. Confirm that everyone can install the same edition, join the same region and use the required account or subscription. A technically supported game can still fail as a replacement if your friends cannot enter the same mode.
Which games still have online multiplayer on PS5, PS4 or Xbox?
As of the October 13, 2026 check, the cited current listings include Sea of Thieves, Rocket League, Fortnite, Destiny 2 and other online games on Xbox, while the cross-platform guide identifies PlayStation and Xbox versions for several of the candidates above. Use those entries as a dated snapshot, not a guarantee of future support.
| Console question | What to verify now | Why the check matters |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 or PS5? | Exact edition in the PlayStation Store, required online entitlement, region availability and the publisher’s service page | A PS4 shutdown or listing does not automatically describe PS5, and a store download does not prove online functionality |
| Xbox One or Series X|S? | Console compatibility, Xbox online-multiplayer listing, current service notice and whether the mode is available on your edition | Xbox One and Series X|S versions can have different support schedules or feature sets |
| Mixed PlayStation/Xbox group? | Cross-play scope, account linking, voice-chat options and whether cross-progression is supported | “Cross-platform” descriptions may not cover every mode, generation or progression system |
Recheck immediately before installing because online games can change platforms, modes and policies after a list is published. No current listing is a promise that a service will remain online indefinitely.
When an offline transition is better than a replacement
Sometimes the publisher plans to preserve part of a game instead of ending it outright. Bandai Namco’s September 26, 2026 notice for SYNDUALITY Echo of Ada says its PvPvE online service will end and that an offline-exclusive PvE extraction-shooter version is planned. The notice lists save-data transfer for December 2026 and a service transition after May 2027 as scheduled milestones. Those are plans, not completed events, so check for a later confirmation before relying on them.
The development and operations team described the intent this way: “Although it will end the PvPvE style through the online service, the adventure in the ‘SYNDUALITY’ world will continue as the PvE extraction shooter.” This is a useful model for evaluating any announced transition: ask which progression transfers, which social features disappear and whether the offline version requires a separate download or purchase.

A reissue can change access controls, networking and multiplayer features. A 2015 U.S. Copyright Office docket submission discusses reissued games with different access controls and multiplayer differences, including a reissued Battlefield 1942 version that later lost official multiplayer when GameSpy closed. That history does not establish a universal legal rule, but it does show why “available to buy again” and “restores the original online community” are separate claims.
Before buying a remaster, look for an explicit statement about servers, matchmaking, user-created content, dedicated-server support and compatibility with the original player base. If the publisher only promises the campaign, assume the online experience has not been restored until the current documentation says otherwise.
Common replacement mistakes
- Matching the theme instead of the loop: Two pirate games can differ completely if one is a competitive arena and the other is a cooperative voyage.
- Ignoring generation boundaries: A listing for PS5 does not establish PS4 support, and an Xbox Series X|S edition does not establish Xbox One support.
- Confusing cross-platform listing with universal cross-play: Verify the exact modes and account requirements for your group.
- Assuming offline content is gone: Read the notice and launch the original before replacing it.
- Assuming a replacement is permanent: Any live service can change or close. Keep locally playable purchases and exported screenshots or saves where the game permits.
- Buying before checking the current edition: Store pages, subscriptions, regions and service policies can change after a third-party guide is published.
A practical decision path
- If you mainly miss community-made levels or creations, first determine whether the original’s offline tools or downloaded content still work. None of the candidates above is established as a direct substitute for a specific creator library.
- If you miss social exploration with friends, investigate Sea of Thieves and verify the current PS5/Xbox support and cross-play conditions.
- If you miss short competitive matches, compare Rocket League for an arcade sports loop, or Fortnite and Apex Legends for shooter competition.
- If you miss asymmetric pursuit and survival, investigate Dead by Daylight and confirm that its current mode matches the structure you remember.
- If you miss a persistent shooter world, investigate Destiny 2, then check the exact activity, edition and current service requirements.
- If the publisher has announced an offline conversion, follow that schedule before paying for a different game. The converted version may preserve more of your progression and setting than any substitute.
The strongest replacement is the one that preserves your preferred activity, works for your friends’ exact consoles and is currently confirmed to be online. Treat every recommendation as a match to verify—not a promise that the old community, maps, progression or creator content will return.
