If you already have—or are willing to buy—a color inkjet printer and a craft cutter, a separate setup is usually the more flexible way to make custom contour-cut stickers.
A printer by itself cannot cut outlines around artwork. It produces the image; a compatible cutting machine reads registration marks and performs the contour cut. For home users, the established workflow is a color inkjet printer plus a compatible cutter running Design Space’s Print Then Cut process. Verify the exact machine generation, printable material, software, and sensor requirements before buying.

What counts as an alternative?
Readers use “Cricut sticker printer” to describe two different kinds of setup:
Recommended Free Tools
- An all-in-one printer/cutter: a purpose-built desktop device prints onto compatible media and cuts or supplies pre-cut sticker sheets.
- A modular print-and-cut setup: a separate color printer creates the artwork, while a craft cutting machine cuts the outside contour.
These routes solve different problems. An all-in-one device can be simpler and smaller, but its media sizes and supply choices may be tightly controlled. A modular setup requires calibration and two pieces of hardware, yet it can support more artwork formats, larger sheets, and different sticker materials when the printer and cutter are compatible.

Quick comparison of the main routes
| Route | What prints | What cuts | Best for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dedicated all-in-one print/cut device | The device’s built-in printer | The same device or its integrated cutting mechanism | Small batches and a compact desktop workflow | Media dimensions, finishes, and supplies are model-specific |
| Color inkjet plus compatible craft cutter | A home color inkjet printer | A compatible cutting machine after registration-mark detection | Custom contours, varied artwork, and a scalable home setup | Requires software setup, calibration, a mat or blade, and two devices |
| Inkjet printer alone | A printed sticker sheet | No contour cutting | Square or rectangular labels that can be hand-cut | Not a substitute for die-cut or kiss-cut stickers |
| Alternative cutter family with its own software | A separately verified printer | The cutter’s print-and-cut system | Users who prefer another ecosystem | Capabilities vary by exact model; a family name does not prove sticker support |
Best-established home alternative: an inkjet printer plus a compatible cutter
For custom stickers, the most clearly documented home route is a color-capable printer paired with a compatible smart cutting machine. In this workflow, design software prepares the artwork and registration marks, the inkjet prints the sheet, and the cutter scans those marks before following the printed contour.
What you need
Cricut’s Print Then Cut documentation lists these components:
- Design Space software and an account that can send the job to the machine.
- A compatible Cricut smart cutting machine.
- A compatible home color printer; Cricut recommends inkjet printers for a broad range of printable materials.
- A mat and suitable blade for the cutter.
- Printable material that matches the printer, cutter, and sensor requirements.
The same logic applies if you choose another cutter ecosystem: confirm the printer type, software workflow, registration system, mat requirements, blade, and supported media for the exact model.
Which Cricut machine families support Print Then Cut?
Cricut’s Print Then Cut help documentation lists the Joy Xtra, Explore, Maker, and Venture families as compatible. The separate Create Sticker instructions also list Joy 2 and explicitly exclude the original Joy. Generation matters, so check the model name rather than assuming every machine with “Joy,” “Explore,” or “Maker” in its name behaves the same way.
Rank #2
- Laser/Inkjet Printing. Matte surface prevents ink smudges for hassle-free printing.
- Easy to write. Surface is similar to writing paper. Write on it with pens, pencils or markers.
- Self Adhesive. Just peel and paste! Sticks great on cardboard, plastic, paper and almost any flat surface.
- Dimensions: 8.5" x 11". Letter Size.
- Pack of 30 sheets, 30 labels.
| Machine family or model reference | Documented status in the cited Cricut guidance | Buying implication |
|---|---|---|
| Joy Xtra | Listed as Print Then Cut compatible | Confirm the exact material and size limits for the model you are considering |
| Explore family | Listed as Print Then Cut compatible | Check the generation and the current Design Space support |
| Maker family | Listed as Print Then Cut compatible | Verify blade, mat, and printable-media compatibility |
| Venture | Listed as Print Then Cut compatible | Do not transfer media assumptions from smaller machines |
| Joy 2 | Included in Create Sticker instructions | Use the specific Create Sticker workflow and its supported materials |
| Original Joy | Explicitly excluded from the Create Sticker instructions | Do not buy it expecting that sticker workflow |
Print Then Cut workflow, step by step
- Prepare the artwork in Design Space. Upload your image or create the design, then set the intended operation to Print Then Cut rather than Cut Only. Flatten layered artwork when the design needs to print as one image with an outside contour.
- Confirm the material and printer. Select an inkjet-compatible printable sticker material and load it according to the material maker’s instructions. Cricut says its Printable Sticker Paper is for inkjet printers only; using a laser printer may damage the material or the printer.
- Send the design to the printer. Use the print dialog’s actual-size or scale setting as required by the design. Avoid options that shrink or enlarge the page unless you intentionally account for that change in the cut layout.
- Load the printed sheet on the mat. Place it in the orientation shown by Design Space, press it firmly onto the mat, and load the mat into the cutter. A skewed sheet can move the printed contour away from the blade path.
- Let the sensor read the registration marks. The machine uses the marks around the printed area to locate the artwork. Keep the marks unobstructed and use the lighting and loading conditions recommended for the machine.
- Run the cut and inspect the first sheet. Check whether the blade follows the outline, whether the cut is a kiss cut or a full cut as intended, and whether the backing remains intact. Adjust material settings only after confirming the sheet is loaded correctly.
- Calibrate when alignment is consistently off. Use the calibration tool in the software, print its test page, and follow the on-screen cut-and-measure process. Recalibration is different from simply changing pressure; it corrects the machine’s interpretation of the registration marks.
Why inkjet is the safer default
Cricut recommends inkjet printers for a wide range of printable materials, including printable vinyl, printable iron-on, and sticker paper. Its Printable Sticker Paper guidance specifies inkjet-only use and warns that laser heat can damage the material or printer. That restriction applies to the specified Cricut material; do not assume every third-party sheet has the same printer requirement. Read the packaging and technical sheet for the exact media.
Sensor and finish problems
Registration systems need to see the marks clearly. Cricut warns that darker, high-gloss, or holographic non-Cricut materials can interfere with sensor accuracy. If a sheet fails to scan:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Try a matte, light-colored material for the test job.
- Make sure the black registration marks are fully printed and not covered by laminate or tape.
- Reload the sheet squarely on the mat.
- Use the machine’s documented sensor or calibration procedure instead of repeatedly changing blade pressure.
- Only return to glossy or holographic stock after a plain-material test succeeds.
Dedicated compact route: Cricut StickerPix Print + Cut
If your priority is a compact, appliance-like workflow rather than open-ended media choice, StickerPix Print + Cut is the dedicated route documented by Cricut. It uses compatible pre-cut media and combines dye-sublimation printing with a protective clear layer.
Documented media sizes
| Media | Stated size | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Sticker sheets | 4 × 7 inches | Cricut’s product comparison states compatibility with this pre-cut format |
| Photo paper | 4 × 6 inches | Cricut’s product comparison states compatibility with this photo-paper format |
| Sticker paper supply listing | 3.94 × 6.93 inches | Cricut’s supply page lists this pre-cut size; it is not the same as ordinary letter-size sticker paper |
Those dimensions describe the compatible StickerPix media, not a universal size standard for desktop sticker printers. Do not feed ordinary letter-size printable sticker paper into StickerPix unless Cricut specifically confirms that media as compatible.
When this route makes sense
- You want a small, repeatable format for labels, mini prints, or photo-style stickers.
- You prefer pre-cut media and do not want to tune a separate printer and cutter.
- A protective clear layer and dye-sublimation output fit your use case.
The trade-off is format flexibility. The documented 4 × 7-inch sticker sheet and 4 × 6-inch photo-paper formats are narrower than the range available from a modular printer-and-cutter setup. Confirm current media availability before committing to the device.

Alternative cutter ecosystems: Brother ScanNCut and Siser Juliet
Independent cutting-machine coverage identifies Brother ScanNCut and Siser Juliet as Cricut alternatives. That broad identification is useful for building a shortlist, but it does not establish that every model in either family supports the same sticker workflow, media size, sensor behavior, or software feature.
How to verify a specific model
Before buying, find the exact model’s manual or official product page and verify all of the following:
- Print-and-cut terminology: look for a documented print-and-cut, contour-cut, or registration-mark function—not merely “cuts paper.”
- Printer requirements: confirm whether the workflow accepts an ordinary color inkjet and whether laser output is restricted.
- Software path: identify the application used to import artwork, generate registration marks, print, and send the cut job.
- Media envelope: check maximum printable area, sheet thickness, adhesive backing, laminate, and surface finish.
- Sensor behavior: determine whether dark, glossy, metallic, or holographic stock is supported or likely to reduce mark-reading accuracy.
- Cut style: confirm whether the machine can kiss-cut the sticker face while leaving the backing intact, full-cut individual pieces, or both.
- Consumables: check the required mat, blade, replacement parts, and approved media before calculating ownership cost.
If a listing only says that a machine cuts vinyl or cardstock, that is not proof that it can print registration marks and contour-cut printed stickers. Model-level documentation is the deciding evidence.
Choosing printable sticker media
Inkjet printable sticker paper
Inkjet sticker paper is the clearest match for the documented home workflow. Confirm that the sheet is designed for inkjet ink, that the adhesive side matches your printer’s feed path, and that the thickness is within the cutter’s limits. Cricut’s own Printable Sticker Paper is explicitly inkjet-only, and Cricut warns that laser printing can damage it or the printer.
Printable vinyl and specialty finishes
Printable vinyl can be useful when you need a more durable face than ordinary paper, but the printer, adhesive, laminate, and cutter must all agree. Glossy, dark, and holographic surfaces can interfere with optical registration marks. Test a small batch before committing to a large pack, especially if you plan to laminate the sheet.

Water resistance and outdoor use
“Waterproof” is not established merely because a sheet is called vinyl or because the print has a clear layer. Durability depends on the face stock, ink, adhesive, laminate, exposure, and application surface. If water resistance matters, require a material specification that matches your use and test the finished sticker after printing and cutting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Output size and layout decisions
Dedicated devices and modular systems impose different layout rules. StickerPix’s documented formats are 4 × 7-inch sticker sheets and 4 × 6-inch photo paper. A separate printer and cutter may let you design on larger sheets, but the usable area is limited by the printer’s margins, the cutter’s registration marks, and the mat’s placement zone.
Plan the sheet before printing:
- Leave the software-required registration area clear.
- Keep a consistent gap between sticker contours so neighboring cuts do not merge.
- Place critical artwork away from the sheet edge and printer’s non-printable margins.
- Use duplicate copies on the first test sheet so one alignment check provides several samples.
- Choose kiss-cut or full-cut behavior deliberately; a sticker intended for peeling usually needs the face cut without severing the backing.
Cost and operating requirements
No current printer, media, or replacement-supply prices are established here, so a precise cost-per-sticker comparison would be misleading. Build your own estimate from the exact products you can buy in your region.
What to include in a modular setup budget
- Color ink or other printer consumables.
- Printable sticker paper or vinyl.
- Cutting machine, mat, and blade.
- Optional laminate or protective overlay.
- Failed sheets from calibration, feed errors, and sensor misreads.
What to include in a dedicated-device budget
- The device itself.
- Its compatible pre-cut sticker and photo media.
- Replacement media and any protective-layer supplies.
- Waste caused by the fixed sheet format.
A lower purchase price does not automatically mean a lower finished-sticker cost. A device that uses a small proprietary sheet may be economical for occasional batches but less efficient when you need larger layouts or multiple sizes.

The print is offset from the cut
First check that the sheet was printed at the intended scale and loaded squarely. Then run the cutter’s calibration procedure. Do not compensate for a registration error by moving the artwork manually on every job; that hides the underlying problem and makes repeatability worse.

The machine cannot read registration marks
Use a light, matte test sheet; keep marks uncovered; reduce glare; and confirm that the printed marks are complete. Dark, high-gloss, and holographic materials are specifically called out by Cricut as potential sensor problems. If the test sheet works but the specialty stock does not, the surface—not necessarily the cutter—is the likely cause.
The printer smears or feeds the sheet poorly
Confirm the media is intended for your printer technology, load only the number of sheets recommended by the printer, and allow ink to dry before placing the sheet on the cutting mat. A laser printer is not an interchangeable substitute for inkjet on Cricut’s Printable Sticker Paper.
The blade cuts through the backing
Check whether the job is intended to be a kiss cut or full cut, then select the material setting supplied by the media maker or machine software. Test a small corner before running a full sheet. Excess pressure can turn a peelable sticker job into individual loose pieces.

The cutter family is advertised as an alternative but the workflow is unclear
Pause the purchase and locate the exact model’s print-and-cut documentation. If the listing does not specify registration marks, supported printers, printable media, and the software steps, treat the capability as unverified rather than assuming it matches Cricut’s workflow.
Decision guide
Choose a modular printer-and-cutter setup when
- You need custom contours rather than only rectangular labels.
- You want to use different paper, vinyl, or finish types over time.
- You already own a compatible inkjet printer or cutter.
- You can spend time calibrating and testing materials.
- You expect to make different sticker sizes or larger batches.
Choose a dedicated compact device when
- You value a single, repeatable desktop workflow over broad media choice.
- The documented sheet formats fit your designs.
- You are comfortable buying compatible pre-cut supplies.
- You mainly produce small labels, mini prints, or photo-format stickers.
Choose an alternative cutter family only after verification when
- You prefer its software or ecosystem.
- The exact model documents print-and-cut support.
- Its media, sensor, and cut-style requirements fit your materials.
- Replacement mats, blades, and media are available where you live.
Bottom line: the most practical alternative for custom shapes
For most home makers who mean “print my own artwork and cut around it,” the strongest alternative is not another printer alone: it is a compatible color inkjet printer paired with a documented print-and-cut machine. Cricut’s own guidance establishes that workflow, recommends inkjet for many printable materials, and identifies the machine families that support it, while also warning about laser printers and difficult glossy or holographic surfaces.
A dedicated compact printer/cutter is preferable when its fixed media formats—4 × 7-inch sticker sheets and 4 × 6-inch photo paper in the documented StickerPix system—match your needs. Brother ScanNCut and Siser Juliet are reasonable cutter families to investigate, but their sticker suitability must be confirmed model by model. In every case, the deciding questions are the same: who prints, who cuts, what media is supported, how registration is read, and whether the finished format fits your work.
