Best alternatives to cloud gaming for playing PC games on a low-end device

The best-supported alternatives to cloud gaming for playing PC games on a low-end device are self-hosted streaming services: run each game on a capable gaming PC you control, then stream its video and audio to the weaker device. Steam Remote Play is the simplest route when the game is in your Steam library. Moonlight paired with Sunshine is the more flexible route for a broader PC game collection.

Neither option makes the low-end laptop, phone, tablet or mini PC render a demanding game locally. The separate host PC does the rendering; the client only decodes the stream, sends your controls and displays the result. You therefore need access to a sufficiently powerful host, a client that can decode the chosen stream, and a network that can carry it reliably.

What “alternative to cloud gaming” means here

There are two very different ways to avoid installing a demanding PC game on a weak device:

  • Self-hosted game streaming: your own gaming PC runs the game and sends an interactive video stream to the low-end device. This is the practical alternative supported by the available evidence.
  • Local play or a hardware upgrade: the weak device runs the game itself. Whether that is possible depends on its exact processor, graphics hardware, memory, operating system, drivers and the specific game. The available sources do not establish a universal upgrade, a guaranteed list of games or a model that will work for every reader.

If you do not have another capable PC, a useful recommendation requires the exact low-end device, operating system, games, budget and whether internet use is acceptable. Without those details, claiming that a particular upgrade or “low-spec” game will work would be guesswork.

Which option fits your situation?

Option Where the game runs Library or compatibility Network scope Setup profile
Steam Remote Play Your gaming PC Games available in your Steam library and supported by Remote Play Designed for streaming from the host to supported devices; begin on a reliable home network Most straightforward if you already use Steam
Moonlight with Sunshine Your gaming PC PC games exposed by the Sunshine host and supported by the client Start with both devices on the same home network; internet access requires additional network configuration More control and broader host flexibility, with more setup
GeForce NOW NVIDIA’s remote cloud infrastructure Supported games and supported store libraries; not every game you own Internet connection to NVIDIA’s data center Cloud fallback, not a non-cloud alternative
Local installation The low-end device Depends on the exact device and game No streaming network required Must be assessed case by case; no universal recommendation is supported

The two self-hosted choices depend on hardware you supply. They can avoid renting a remote gaming PC, but they do not remove the need for a capable host or a good connection between host and client. The available sources do not establish a universal latency or image-quality winner between Steam Remote Play and Moonlight with Sunshine.

Steam Remote Play: the easiest self-hosted route

Steam describes Remote Play as streaming games from a gaming PC to another PC and to supported phones, tablets and televisions. It is aimed at exactly the situation in which a demanding title is installed on a powerful computer while a lower-end system acts as the screen and controller. The game must be available in the Steam library used by the host account, and the title must support Remote Play.

What you need

  • A gaming PC that can run the title at the resolution and frame rate you want.
  • Steam installed and signed in on the host, with the game installed there.
  • A supported Steam client on the low-end PC or mobile device.
  • Controls the client can pass to the host. Keyboard and mouse are appropriate for many PC-to-PC setups; a gamepad may be more practical on a phone or tablet.
  • A stable connection between the two devices. Start with both on the same home network so you can separate setup problems from internet-routing problems.

Setup procedure

  1. Install the latest Steam client on the gaming PC and on the device that will display the stream. Sign in with the account that owns the game.
  2. On the host, open Steam’s settings and the Remote Play section, then enable Remote Play. Steam’s label or layout can vary slightly by client version.
  3. Leave the host awake, signed in and connected to the network. Disable sleep while you are testing; a sleeping host cannot launch or stream a game.
  4. On the low-end device, open Steam and select the game from the library. Use the Play or Stream control that Steam presents for the remote host rather than attempting a local installation.
  5. Launch the game and check input, audio and picture quality before changing resolution or frame-rate targets. A lower stream setting can reduce the work required from the client’s decoder and network.
  6. Once the home-network session is reliable, test any remote-access scenario you actually need. Performance outside the home depends on both internet connections and routing; it is not guaranteed by the fact that local streaming works.

When Steam Remote Play is the sensible choice

Choose it when most of your games are already in Steam, you want the fewest moving parts and you do not need to expose a large collection of non-Steam applications. It also makes sense for a PC-to-PC setup in which the client already has Steam installed. It is not a way to run a Steam game without a host PC.

Moonlight with Sunshine: a flexible self-hosted pairing

Moonlight is an open-source client project for streaming games from a gaming PC to supported client devices. Its project page recommends Sunshine as the host to start with. Sunshine is self-hosted software that can use hardware encoders on AMD, Intel and NVIDIA GPUs, with a software-encoding option as well. This pairing is useful when you want to stream a PC game collection without limiting the host to the Steam Remote Play workflow.

What you need

  • A host PC with enough graphics and processor capacity to run the game while encoding a live stream.
  • Sunshine installed on the host and Moonlight installed on the client device.
  • A way to launch the game through the Sunshine host interface or an application entry it exposes.
  • Client-side decoding support for the resolution and frame rate you select. A weak client may still struggle to decode a high-bitrate stream even though it is not rendering the game.
  • A reliable home network for initial pairing. Moonlight’s setup guidance recommends pairing on the same network before attempting internet streaming.

Home-network setup

  1. Install Sunshine on the gaming PC and complete its first-run configuration. Confirm that the host’s graphics driver and encoder are recognized.
  2. Install Moonlight on the low-end device. Keep the client and host connected to the same home network for the first pairing.
  3. Open Moonlight and select the discovered gaming PC. Moonlight will display a pairing code.
  4. Enter that code in Sunshine’s host interface when prompted. Approve the pairing only on devices you control.
  5. Start with a conservative resolution and frame-rate target. Launch a game from the Moonlight application list and verify video, audio and controls.
  6. Increase quality one setting at a time. If decoding, stutter or latency worsens, return to the last stable setting rather than changing several variables at once.

Internet streaming after local pairing

Moonlight’s guide treats internet play as a second step, not as a guaranteed plug-and-play feature. Sunshine documents an optional UPnP setting that can request automatic port forwarding from a compatible router. Whether that works depends on the router, the internet service and the network’s address configuration. If automatic forwarding is unavailable, additional network configuration is required; do not assume that opening ports is safe or necessary without understanding your router and security settings.

Pairing and testing locally first gives you a known-good baseline. If local streaming works but internet streaming does not, investigate routing, firewall and upload limitations rather than reinstalling the client or game.

When Moonlight and Sunshine are the better fit

This pairing suits readers who want an open-source client, a self-hosted host and more control over which PC applications are exposed. Moonlight states that the project is free and community-run, while Sunshine is documented as self-hosted software. The available evidence does not show that the pair is always lower-latency or higher-quality than Steam Remote Play, so choose it for flexibility and control rather than an unverified performance promise.

Network requirements: what matters in practice

Streaming quality is determined by the complete path: the host’s encoder, the client’s decoder, Wi-Fi or Ethernet conditions, congestion, latency and the distance between host and client. There is no single bandwidth number established here for every Steam Remote Play or Moonlight session. Resolution, frame rate and the game’s motion complexity all affect the required bitrate.

Home network

  • Use Ethernet for the host when practical; it removes one variable from the upload side of the stream.
  • For a wireless client, use a strong 5 GHz connection when available and keep the device within reliable range of the access point.
  • Test at the resolution and frame rate you actually intend to use. A stream that is smooth at 720p may not remain smooth at 1080p or a higher frame rate.
  • Watch for other traffic. Backups, large downloads and crowded wireless channels can produce bursts of latency even when a speed test reports a high headline rate.

Internet connection

Internet streaming needs upload capacity from the host’s network as well as download capacity at the client. Latency and routing can matter more than peak speed for interactive games. Moonlight recommends proving the setup on the home network first; Steam Remote Play should likewise be validated locally before you rely on it away from home.

NVIDIA’s published figures are useful only for its own GeForce NOW service. They are not universal minimums for local streaming:

GeForce NOW target NVIDIA-published bandwidth
HD, up to 60 FPS 15 Mbps
FHD at 60 FPS 25 Mbps
QHD or UW QHD at 120 FPS 35 Mbps
4K at 120 FPS 45 Mbps
QHD or FHD at 240 or 360 FPS 55 Mbps
5K at 120 FPS 65 Mbps

These figures come from NVIDIA’s current GeForce NOW system-requirements page, accessed October 13, 2026, and describe that service’s targets. NVIDIA also recommends a wired connection or 5 GHz Wi-Fi and less than 80 ms latency to its data center in the Linux requirements section. A Steam Remote Play or Moonlight session may behave differently because its host, route and encoder are different.

GeForce NOW as a fallback, not an alternative

GeForce NOW addresses the same underlying problem—insufficient local hardware—but it does so with cloud gaming. If your requirement is “no cloud provider,” it does not qualify. If you simply need a low-end device to display a demanding PC game and accept cloud play, it can be a practical fallback.

NVIDIA says users can synchronize supported PC store libraries to access games they own. That does not mean every owned game is available: the title must be in the supported catalog and meet the service’s conditions. NVIDIA’s Install-to-Play feature applies to Steam titles that have opted into Steam cloud streaming, so ownership alone does not guarantee access.

For phone or tablet play, NVIDIA lists Xbox controllers among supported GeForce NOW gamepads and recommends a gamepad for mobile gaming. A controller can improve comfort and control when the client and game support it, but it does not increase the low-end device’s graphics performance and is not required for every PC-to-PC setup.

Client-device checks before you choose

The client is not rendering the 3D scene, but it still has important work to do. Check these points before spending money:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Operating-system support: confirm that Steam, Moonlight or the chosen client is available for your device and operating-system version.
  • Video decoding: hardware decoding is preferable for a long session. If the device relies on software decoding, high resolution or high frame rate may cause dropped frames, heat or battery drain.
  • Display: choose a stream mode the panel can show. Sending a 4K stream to a small 1080p display adds work without improving visible detail.
  • Input: verify keyboard, mouse, touch and controller behavior in the specific game. Mobile touch controls may be unsuitable for games designed around a full keyboard or gamepad.
  • Power and thermals: keep a phone or tablet charged and avoid blocking its cooling path. A client that throttles after several minutes can look like a network problem.

Common failure modes and fixes

The host does not appear

  • Confirm that the gaming PC is awake, signed in and connected to the same network as the client.
  • Check that Steam Remote Play is enabled on the host, or that Sunshine is running and allowed through the host firewall.
  • Temporarily disable sleep and test again. Re-enable an appropriate power policy after the session is stable.

Video is choppy while audio is acceptable

  • Reduce the stream resolution or frame-rate target.
  • Move the wireless client closer to the access point or switch the host to Ethernet.
  • Check whether the client is decoding in software and whether its processor is saturated.
  • Pause other high-bandwidth activity on the network and retest.

Controls do not reach the game

  • Confirm that the client recognizes the keyboard, mouse or controller before launching the game.
  • On a phone or tablet, verify that the controller is paired with the client rather than with the host.
  • Check the game’s own input mode. Some titles switch between controller and keyboard layouts and may require the desired device to be active when the game starts.

Local streaming works but internet streaming fails

  • Return to the local baseline and confirm that the host and client still work on the home network.
  • Review firewall, router and address-translation settings. Sunshine’s UPnP option is optional and depends on router support; it is not a guarantee.
  • Measure the host network’s upload capacity and the remote client’s latency. A fast download connection at the client cannot compensate for inadequate host upload or unstable routing.

The game launches but the picture is blank

  • Update the host graphics driver and verify that the selected encoder is available to Sunshine or Steam.
  • Try a lower resolution and a different hardware-encoding choice if the host software offers one.
  • Check whether another application, overlay or display-driver setting is interfering with capture. Test with a simple desktop or lightweight application before changing several settings at once.

How to decide without buying unnecessary hardware

  1. You have a capable gaming PC and most games are in Steam: start with Steam Remote Play on the home network.
  2. You have a capable gaming PC but want a broader or more customizable host setup: install Sunshine and use Moonlight as the client.
  3. You have a capable gaming PC but need to play away from home: make local streaming reliable first, then plan the network configuration required for internet access.
  4. You do not have a capable host and accept cloud gaming: evaluate GeForce NOW’s supported catalog and service-specific network requirements; do not assume every owned game is available.
  5. You do not have a capable host and do not want cloud gaming: gather the exact device model, operating system, games, budget and upgrade constraints before choosing hardware or software. The information available here cannot support a universal recommendation.

Self-hosted streaming is therefore a relocation of the demanding work, not a performance upgrade for the low-end device. It is the strongest non-cloud path when you already have a suitable gaming PC and a network that can deliver the stream.
