There is no universal winner. The right alternative to Claude depends on whether your workflow needs an explicit stateful graph, role-based collaboration, Microsoft or Google deployment, or a small set of managed agent primitives. For most teams, start by mapping the execution shape and recovery requirements, then shortlist LangGraph, CrewAI, Microsoft Agent Framework, Google ADK, OpenAI Agents SDK, or—when documents are the center of the system—LlamaIndex Workflows.
What to evaluate before replacing Claude
A multi-agent framework is more than a model wrapper. It determines how agents hand work to one another, where state is stored, how failures are recovered, which providers and programming languages are usable, and how the system is observed in production. A framework that looks convenient in a demo can become difficult to operate if it hides state transitions or gives you no way to resume a partially completed run.

Use these six questions to narrow the field:
- What is the execution shape? Is the system an open-ended conversation, a role-based team, or a graph of explicit steps and events?
- How much control and recovery do you need? Look for checkpoints, persistence, retries, resumable runs, human approval, and inspectable state.
- Which models and tools must work? Check provider adapters, tool protocols such as MCP, and how difficult it is to change models later.
- Which language and runtime are required? Verify support for the exact features you need in Python, TypeScript, .NET, Go, Java, or Kotlin—not merely the languages shown on a landing page.
- How will the system operate? Tracing, debugging, evaluation, deployment, security boundaries, and cost visibility matter after the prototype.
- What does your team already use? Existing cloud, data, identity, and developer tooling can outweigh a small difference in agent ergonomics.
A comparison published by LangChain is useful as a map of these choices, but it is vendor-authored and does not establish an independent performance ranking. The official framework documentation likewise describes capabilities rather than a shared controlled benchmark.

LangGraph: explicit control for stateful, recoverable runs
LangGraph is the strongest candidate when the workflow itself is a product requirement. It presents low-level infrastructure for building graphs in which deterministic code and model-driven decisions coexist. You define nodes, transitions, state, and the conditions under which work continues or pauses.

Why teams choose it
- Persistence and resumption: Long-running executions can retain state and resume after failures instead of restarting from the beginning.
- Human intervention: A graph can pause for an approval or correction before continuing.
- Memory: The design supports both short-term run state and longer-term memory patterns.
- Mixed control: A single workflow can use deterministic validation or business logic alongside agentic steps.
- Tracing: LangSmith is used in the documented ecosystem for traces and related debugging or evaluation workflows.
Trade-offs
LangGraph does not try to hide the architecture. You must decide what belongs in state, which transitions are deterministic, how retries work, and where human checkpoints occur. That extra design work pays off when a run lasts minutes or days, must survive worker restarts, or needs an audit trail. It can feel heavier than a simple handoff library for a short conversational assistant.
Choose LangGraph when
Start here if you need resumable jobs, explicit approval gates, inspectable state, or a workflow that combines regular software with agents. Define a state schema and failure policy before writing prompts; otherwise the graph can become a collection of implicit assumptions that are difficult to recover.
CrewAI: structured Flows with role-based Crews
CrewAI divides the system into two ideas. Flows handle events, state, branching, and execution control. Crews contain agents with assigned roles, goals, and tools that collaborate on delegated tasks. This split gives a team-oriented vocabulary without forcing every control decision into an unconstrained conversation.

A research pipeline might use a Flow to receive a request, validate inputs, branch on the requested output, and collect results. Within one branch, a Crew could assign separate research, analysis, and editing roles. The distinction makes it easier to keep business process logic outside the agents while still allowing collaboration inside a task.
What to verify
Role and goal descriptions do not replace operational controls. Confirm how state is persisted, how a failed task is retried, how tool permissions are restricted, and how a run is traced in the version you plan to deploy. Marketing language about being “leading” or “production-ready” should not be treated as an independent ranking or reliability guarantee.
Choose CrewAI when
Use it when your mental model is a small team of specialists with clear responsibilities and the surrounding process can be expressed as events and branches. If every transition needs formal checkpointing, replay, or custom recovery semantics, compare its implementation details with a lower-level graph framework before committing.
Microsoft Agent Framework: graph workflows for Python and .NET teams
Microsoft describes its Agent Framework as combining AutoGen-style agent abstractions with Semantic Kernel capabilities. Its documented building blocks include state, memory, middleware, MCP clients, and explicit execution paths, alongside graph-based workflows.

Agent or workflow?
Microsoft’s guidance draws a useful boundary: use agents for open-ended or conversational tasks, and use workflows for well-defined steps and explicit coordination. That distinction prevents an agent from improvising a process that should have been encoded as ordinary application logic.
Provider and platform fit
The overview lists Microsoft Foundry, Anthropic, Azure OpenAI, OpenAI, Ollama, and other providers. This breadth can help a team standardize orchestration while changing the underlying model service. It does not mean every provider exposes identical features, latency, tool behavior, or deployment options; test the exact combination required by your application.
Safety and data handling
Microsoft cautions developers to review third-party data handling and provide appropriate safety mitigations. Treat every external model, tool server, and middleware component as a separate trust boundary. Define what data may leave your environment, redact sensitive fields before tool calls, and log approvals and denials without storing secrets.
Choose Microsoft Agent Framework when
It is a natural shortlist option for teams already invested in Microsoft identity, cloud, or developer tooling and needing Python or .NET. It is less compelling if your team needs a runtime outside those ecosystems or wants the smallest possible abstraction layer.
Google ADK: multi-language workflows and Google deployment options
Google’s Agent Development Kit (ADK) documents agent teams, graph workflows, runtime and deployment, observability, and evaluation. The listed language runtimes are Python, TypeScript, Go, Java, and Kotlin, which makes it one of the broader choices for polyglot organizations.
Workflow patterns
- Sequential: Pass work through a known order of steps.
- Parallel: Run independent branches concurrently, then combine their outputs.
- Loop: Repeat a section while a condition remains true or until a quality target is met.
These patterns are useful when the process is known in advance but individual steps still need model judgment. They also provide a clearer place to add limits, timeouts, and cancellation than a free-form agent conversation.
Model and deployment considerations
The documentation exposes integrations beyond Gemini, including Claude, OpenAI, Ollama, and vLLM. Verify that the adapters, streaming behavior, tool calls, and evaluation features you need are available in your selected language. A feature shown in one runtime may not yet have the same maturity in another.

Choose Google ADK when
Shortlist it when your organization values the documented language range and Google deployment options, or when sequential, parallel, and loop patterns match the application. Confirm operational support in the target region and runtime before designing around a feature that may still be evolving.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →OpenAI Agents SDK: managed turns, tools, handoffs, and guardrails
The OpenAI Agents SDK focuses on a compact set of primitives: agents, tools, handoffs, guardrails, sessions, tracing, and human-in-the-loop handling. The SDK guide recommends it when you want the framework to manage turns, tool execution, safety checks, delegation, or session state.
When its level of abstraction is useful
A customer-support system can route a request from a general agent to a billing or technical specialist, enforce guardrails around tool calls, and preserve a session without requiring you to implement every turn-management detail. Handoffs make delegation explicit while keeping the top-level interaction understandable.
When to use a lower-level API instead
If you need to own the complete loop, state transitions, or scheduling policy, the guidance points to a lower-level Responses API. That path gives you more control but also makes you responsible for retries, persistence, tool orchestration, and recovery semantics.
Important compatibility check
The reviewed documentation is Python-first. Before selecting it for a TypeScript, .NET, Go, Java, or Kotlin service—or for a non-OpenAI model provider—verify current SDK support and the behavior of sessions, tracing, handoffs, and tools in that environment.

LlamaIndex Workflows for document-heavy systems
LlamaIndex Workflows is an additional option when documents and data retrieval are the center of the product rather than incidental tools. The comparative guide describes event-driven orchestration connected to LlamaIndex’s data ecosystem.
This approach can suit ingestion, extraction, retrieval, review, and synthesis pipelines in which each event carries a document-derived result to the next stage. Confirm the current package versions, language support, persistence model, and deployment integrations directly before standardizing on it. The available evidence supports it as a useful category option, not as a universal replacement for the other frameworks.

A practical selection process
Step 1: Draw the workflow without agents
Write the process as ordinary functions and states first. Mark inputs, outputs, side effects, approval points, and failure boundaries. Microsoft’s guidance is a good discipline here: if a normal function can handle a task reliably, use the function instead of an agent.
Step 2: Mark where model judgment is required
Use an agent for ambiguous classification, planning, natural-language interaction, or delegation. Keep authentication, payment decisions, record updates, and policy enforcement deterministic unless there is a compelling reason to do otherwise.
Step 3: Specify state and recovery
- List the state that must survive a process restart.
- Decide whether a human can edit or approve that state.
- Define idempotency for every side-effecting tool.
- Set retry limits, timeouts, cancellation behavior, and dead-letter handling.
- Choose whether short-term session context and long-term memory have different retention rules.
Step 4: Match the execution model
| Your primary need | First frameworks to evaluate | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Durable state, checkpoints, approvals, and replay | LangGraph; Microsoft Agent Framework | Both document explicit workflow control and state-oriented execution |
| Specialists with roles and delegated tasks | CrewAI; OpenAI Agents SDK | They provide role or handoff-oriented collaboration primitives |
| Sequential, parallel, and loop graphs across several languages | Google ADK | Those patterns and runtimes are explicitly documented |
| Document ingestion and retrieval pipelines | LlamaIndex Workflows | Its event-driven model is tied to a document and data ecosystem |
| Minimal managed primitives around tools and sessions | OpenAI Agents SDK | It emphasizes managed turns, guardrails, handoffs, and sessions |
Step 5: Test the provider boundary
Run the same representative tasks with the models and tools you expect to use. Check structured-output validity, tool-call retries, streaming, context limits, latency, and behavior when a provider is unavailable. Provider lists are not proof that every feature behaves equivalently across vendors.
Step 6: Instrument before production
Capture each run’s correlation ID, agent or node, model, prompt version, tool name, input and output schemas, latency, token usage, error, and human decision. Redact secrets and personal data. Traces are useful only when they let an operator reconstruct why a branch was taken and what state was changed.
Step 7: Evaluate with repeatable scenarios
Build a set of normal, ambiguous, adversarial, and failure cases. Score task completion, factuality, policy compliance, tool correctness, escalation behavior, and cost. Re-run the set after changing a model, prompt, framework version, or tool schema. No shared independent benchmark establishes a universal winner among these frameworks.
Migration checklist when leaving Claude
- Inventory dependencies: Record every prompt, tool, memory store, model-specific instruction, and handoff rule.
- Separate prompts from orchestration: Move routing, retries, and approvals into explicit code or graph nodes.
- Define portable message and tool schemas: Avoid relying on one provider’s undocumented formatting or refusal behavior.
- Implement deterministic fallbacks: A failed model call should produce a controlled retry, escalation, or partial result—not an invisible loop.
- Replay historical cases: Compare outputs and tool effects against an approved test set before switching traffic.
- Run a staged rollout: Start with shadow traffic or a small percentage, monitor errors and cost, then expand.
- Keep a rollback path: Preserve the previous provider and state-migration procedure until the new workflow has passed its operational review.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using agents for deterministic work
Agents add latency and variability. Use ordinary code for validation, arithmetic, authorization, schema conversion, and fixed routing.
Confusing parallelism with independence
Parallel branches are safe only when they do not race on shared state or produce conflicting side effects. Add a merge step that validates and reconciles results.
Best Value
Letting every agent call every tool
Grant tools per role or graph node. Require approval for irreversible actions and validate arguments server-side, even when a model produced a structured call.
Persisting sensitive context indefinitely
Set retention and deletion rules for session history, traces, documents, and long-term memory. Treat external model and tool providers as separate data processors that require review.
Choosing by feature checklist alone
A framework may list tracing, memory, or MCP support while the exact integration you need remains immature. Build a thin proof of concept in the target language and deployment environment, then test failure recovery—not just the happy path.

Which alternative should you choose?
Choose LangGraph for maximum control over stateful, long-running, interruptible workflows. Choose CrewAI when role-based collaboration inside an event-driven process is the clearest fit. Choose Microsoft Agent Framework when Python or .NET and Microsoft infrastructure are central. Choose Google ADK when its five documented languages, workflow patterns, and Google deployment options align with your team. Choose OpenAI Agents SDK when managed turns, tools, handoffs, guardrails, and sessions cover the requirement and its runtime support matches your service. Choose LlamaIndex Workflows when document and data pipelines dominate the design.
Recheck documentation immediately before implementation: the material reviewed on October 13, 2026 notes that versions, provider support, deployment choices, and integrations can change quickly. Select the framework that makes your workflow’s state, failure behavior, and security boundaries easiest to explain and operate—not the one with the longest feature list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can these frameworks still use Claude or other model providers?
Several document integrations beyond a single provider. Microsoft Agent Framework lists Anthropic, Azure OpenAI, OpenAI, Ollama, and other providers; Google ADK documents integrations including Claude, OpenAI, Ollama, and vLLM. Verify the exact adapter and feature support for your chosen runtime before relying on portability.
Is a multi-agent framework necessary for every AI application?
No. Use ordinary functions for deterministic tasks and introduce agents only where judgment, planning, natural-language interaction, or delegation is genuinely needed. A smaller design is usually easier to secure, test, and operate.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

What should a proof of concept measure?
Measure task success, structured-output validity, tool-call correctness, recovery after failures, latency, token usage, escalation behavior, and data exposure. Test normal, ambiguous, adversarial, and provider-outage cases rather than only a successful demo.
