If you want to find a word inside a photo already on your phone, scan new paperwork into a searchable PDF, or search a folder of scanned PDFs, you need different tools. BrainShot is described in recent coverage as a prototype, not a proven live OCR product. The closest alternatives depend on where your documents are now: ScanSeek AI for existing photos, Google Drive for new scans and searchable files, and DocFind for searching across a PDF archive.
First, what is BrainShot?
An iTechGuides article published October 3, 2026 describes BrainShot as a prototype intended to turn photos of receipts, invoices, warranties, letters, and forms into a searchable personal document library. The proposed workflow is to capture or import images, extract details into structured records, keep the original, then find or export documents later.

The same article says the submitted demo simulates AI extraction rather than showing live AI processing or reliable document understanding. That is secondary reporting, not an official BrainShot specification. Treat BrainShot as an idea or prototype, not as an established OCR service against which alternatives have been tested.

| Tool | Best fit | What it is described as doing | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScanSeek AI | Words in photos and screenshots already on a phone | Its App Store listing describes on-device OCR and indexing for screenshots, photos, and documents. | These are developer claims, not independently verified privacy or performance results. Apple says the developer’s privacy disclosures are not verified by Apple. |
| Google Drive and Google Docs | New paper scans, searchable PDFs, or converting an existing image/PDF to text | Drive documents mobile scanning and saving searchable PDFs or JPGs; Google Docs has a separate PDF/image-to-text conversion flow. | Searchable text does not guarantee faithful layout or structured data. Google warns that lists, tables, columns, footnotes, and endnotes may not be detected or retained. |
| OneDrive | Microsoft users moving from Lens to scanning and OCR in OneDrive | Microsoft recommends its built-in scanner as the Lens replacement; a separate support page describes mobile OCR for scanned PDFs. | Lens retirement guidance says OneDrive cannot save scans locally. The mobile OCR feature is described as rolling out. |
| DocFind | Searching across an existing library of scanned PDFs | Its product page says it indexes user-selected PDFs and runs on-device OCR on scanned pages. | Vendor claims describe local storage and processing; this is for PDF libraries, not arbitrary camera-roll photo search. |
Find text in photos already on your phone
ScanSeek AI
ScanSeek AI is the closest option in the available material to BrainShot’s camera-roll-search promise. Its App Store listing says it searches screenshots, photos, and documents, with OCR and indexing performed on-device. The listing reports that there are not enough ratings to show an overview, so it does not provide a substantial user-rating record to rely on.

Do not read “on-device” as a privacy audit. Apple notes in the listing that developer privacy disclosures are not verified by Apple and lists possible usage and advertising-related data handling. Before importing sensitive receipts, IDs, or forms, read the current listing and the app’s privacy policy. The available evidence does not establish ScanSeek’s OCR accuracy, current regional availability, or comparative performance.
Scan new paperwork into searchable files
Google Drive: capture paper as a searchable PDF
Google Drive documents a phone-camera workflow for scanning receipts and other paper, adjusting the scan, adding pages, and saving the result as a searchable PDF or JPG. See Google’s scan documents with Google Drive instructions for the current steps and interface.

- FAST SPEEDS - Scans color and black and white documents a blazing speed up to 16ppm (1). Color scanning won’t slow you down as the color scan speed is the same as the black and white scan speed.
- ULTRA COMPACT – At less than 1 foot in length and only about 1. 5lbs in weight you can fit this device virtually anywhere (a bag, a purse, even a pocket).
- READY WHENEVER YOU ARE – The DS-640 mobile scanner is powered via an included micro USB 3. 0 cable allowing you to use it even where there is no outlet available. Plug it into you PC or laptop and you are ready to scan.
- WORKS YOUR WAY – Use the Brother free iPrint&Scan desktop app for scanning to multiple “Scan-to” destinations like PC, Network, cloud services, Email and OCR. (2) Supports Windows, Mac and Linux and TWAIN/WIA for PC/ICA for Mac/SANE drivers. (3)
- OPTIMIZE IMAGES AND TEXT – Automatic color detection/adjustment, image rotation (PC only), bleed through prevention/background removal, text enhancement, color drop to enhance scans. Software suite includes document management and OCR software. (4)
This route is useful when the paper is in front of you and you want a saved document rather than a search index over the phone’s existing photo library. Searchability also has limits: recognized words can be findable even when the original page’s visual structure is not preserved perfectly.
Google Docs: convert an existing image or PDF to text
For an image or PDF that already exists, Google separately documents opening it with Google Docs to convert it to text. The workflow and constraints are described in Google’s PDF and image file conversion instructions. Google recommends sharp, well-lit images and gives a 2 MB file-size recommendation for this conversion flow.

- STAY ORGANIZED – Easily convert your paper documents into digital formats like searchable PDF files, JPEGs, and more.Power Consumption : 2.5W or less (Energy Saving Mode: 0.7W). Suggested Daily Volume : 500 scans..Does it contain liquid: no
- CONVENIENT AND PORTABLE –lightweight and small in size, you can take the scanner anywhere from home offices, classrooms, remote offices, and anywhere in between
- HANDLES VARIOUS MEDIA TYPES – Digitize receipts, business cards, plastic or embossed cards, reports, legal documents, and more
- FAST AND EFFICIENT – No technical hurdles or complicated setups here; easily scan both sides of a document at the same time, in color or black-and-white, at up to 12 pages-per-minute, and with a 20 sheet automatic feeder
- BROAD COMPATIBILITY – Works with both Windows and Mac devices, be it laptop or computer
Google warns that lists, tables, columns, footnotes, and endnotes may not be detected or retained. Use the converted text to find or reuse words, not as a guarantee that complex forms or tabular records will emerge as faithful structured data.
OneDrive: Microsoft’s replacement for Lens
Microsoft Lens is no longer a current choice for new scans. Microsoft says Lens was removed from the Apple and Google app stores on February 9, 2026, and that new scans stopped after March 9, 2026. Existing scans may remain accessible if Lens stays installed and the user signs in to the last active account. Microsoft recommends the OneDrive app’s built-in scanner instead; its Lens retirement notice also says OneDrive cannot save scans locally.

A separate OneDrive support page describes mobile OCR for scanned PDFs, including recognizing, searching, highlighting, and copying text. Microsoft says the feature is rolling out, so it may not be available to every user yet. OneDrive is therefore a practical migration route if its account-based storage fits your needs, but not a way to keep scans saved locally according to Microsoft’s Lens retirement guidance.

DocFind
DocFind is aimed at a different retrieval problem from camera-roll search: finding a word across a collection of PDFs. Its product page says users choose PDFs through the system file picker, the app indexes them, and on-device OCR covers scanned pages so one query can return matches across the archive. The page says documents remain on the device.
Best Value
- Scanner type: Document
- Connectivity technology: USB
- With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
- Digitize documents and images
Those are vendor statements, not an independent privacy assessment or accuracy test. DocFind is the more direct fit when your source material is already PDFs in a library; its described scope does not amount to indexing every photo in a phone’s camera roll.
What OCR can and cannot give you
OCR turns visible marks into text that software can search. That solves “where does this word appear?” but not necessarily “what are the exact fields and relationships in this form?” A searchable PDF may still have imperfect recognition, and converted text may not preserve the layout of a table or multi-column page. Google explicitly cautions about lists, tables, columns, footnotes, and endnotes in its conversion workflow.
- Existing photos: Look for a tool that indexes the photo library or selected images, not merely one that scans new pages.
- New paper: A scanning workflow can save each capture as a searchable PDF, but check whether it supports multi-page documents and where it stores them.
- PDF archives: An index across selected PDFs is a more relevant feature than camera capture.
- Structured records: OCR search alone does not establish accurate extraction of invoice totals, dates, or other fields. Verify important details against the original.
How to choose safely
- Identify the source material. Decide whether you need to search existing photos, scan new paper, or query a PDF collection.
- Check the output you need. A text result, searchable PDF, and index across many documents are different outcomes.
- Review where files and OCR data go. Read the current app privacy disclosures and storage behavior, especially before adding sensitive documents. A vendor’s on-device claim is not an independent audit.
- Test with non-sensitive examples first. Try a clear receipt, a multi-page document, and a page with a table if those match your real files. Check the recognized text against the source before relying on it.
- Verify current availability and feature status. Product listings and rollout details can change; Microsoft specifically describes OneDrive mobile OCR as rolling out.
No independent OCR-accuracy, speed, or privacy comparison is established for these choices. Official Google and Microsoft support pages document workflows, while the ScanSeek and DocFind feature and privacy descriptions come from their respective listings or product pages.
