Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For most café purchases, USDC or another stablecoin on a merchant-supported rail such as Solana Pay is the most practical alternative to Bitcoin. Stablecoins target a reference value such as the U.S. dollar, so the price of a coffee is less exposed to the sharp swings that affect ordinary cryptocurrencies. If the café already runs a Lightning checkout, Lightning can be faster and just as convenient for small payments. The deciding factor is not the token’s popularity: it is whether that café supports the exact asset, blockchain, wallet format and refund process.
Ask what the sign or cashier means by “crypto” before ordering. “USDC” on Solana is a different payment route from USDC on Ethereum, and a Lightning invoice is different from an on-chain Bitcoin address. Sending through the wrong network can leave a payment uncredited and difficult to recover.

What makes a cryptocurrency practical for a coffee purchase?
A café payment has different priorities from a speculative trade. The transaction should show the correct price, settle while you are at the counter, cost little relative to a small order and produce a receipt the merchant can match to the sale. Evaluate every option against six questions:

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Price stability: Does the asset track a currency or commodity, or can its value move materially between ordering and settlement?
- Acceptance: Does the café support this specific token and network, rather than accepting only a different cryptocurrency?
- Settlement: Does the merchant receive a verified payment in seconds, or must it wait for a base-layer confirmation?
- Total fees: What are the blockchain fee, any priority fee and the processor’s fee? A cheap token can still be expensive through a particular checkout provider.
- Wallet friction: Can you pay by QR code, payment URL or NFC, and does the wallet need a separate token to cover network fees?
- Records and recovery: Will you receive an invoice or receipt, and what happens if you overpay, underpay, pay after expiry or request a refund?
Consumer use of cryptocurrency for payments in the United States remains very small and declined slightly in the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City’s 2025 briefing. Treat acceptance as a local feature to verify, not a universal capability.

USDC and other stablecoins
Why a stablecoin fits café pricing
Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies designed to maintain a value relative to another asset, commonly the U.S. dollar or government securities. The Kansas City Fed’s 2025 briefing says this design may make stablecoins more suitable for payments than cryptocurrencies whose values fluctuate significantly. If a latte is priced at $5, a dollar-referenced token is intended to keep that amount close to $5 while the transaction is processed.
That stability is a payment advantage, not a guarantee. A stablecoin can trade away from its target, and its issuer, reserves, redemption process and regulatory status matter. Your wallet may also display a local-currency estimate that changes slightly with market conditions. Confirm the amount shown by the merchant’s checkout before approving.
What the café must support
The merchant has to accept the exact token on the exact chain. USDC on Solana, USDC on Ethereum and USDC on another supported network are separate transaction routes. A wallet can hold the same ticker on several chains, but sending on an unsupported chain does not automatically convert the payment. Recovery may require the merchant or processor to control the receiving address and perform a manual intervention; there is no promise that this will be possible.
Ethereum.org’s small-business guidance lists cafés as a potential use case and describes two merchant choices: retain stablecoins or use a service that automatically settles them into traditional currency. That choice affects the café’s exposure to token operations, accounting and conversion costs. Ask whether the price is fixed in dollars until payment, whether the merchant receives stablecoin or fiat, and which party bears conversion fees.
When to choose a stablecoin
- The menu or payment screen explicitly names the stablecoin and network.
- You want the bill to remain close to a dollar amount while it is being paid.
- Your wallet already holds the token and any fee currency required by that network.
- The café can verify the payment and issue a receipt immediately.
Solana Pay with USDC
How the checkout works
Solana Pay is a concrete QR-code and payment-URL flow for Solana transactions. A café can print a QR code, display one on a screen or provide a URL that a compatible wallet opens. The payment request can specify the recipient, amount, token and a reference that helps the merchant match the blockchain transfer to the order. The merchant’s software then verifies the incoming stablecoin payment instead of relying on a screenshot.

Solana’s payment documentation gives examples using USDC, USDT, PYUSD and USDG. Its documented flow describes a typical transfer settling in under one second. The same documentation estimates a 5,000-lamport base fee at approximately $0.0007; that is an estimate from the documentation, not a permanent price. Priority fees can vary with network demand, and creating a new token account can add a one-time rent cost.
Why it can be attractive to a café
- Fast confirmation: A verified transfer can fit within a normal counter-service interaction.
- Predictable base fee: The documented 5,000-lamport example is small compared with a coffee, although priority fees and account setup can change the total.
- Stablecoin pricing: USDC and similar tokens let the menu remain dollar-denominated while the rail handles settlement.
- Developer tools: The acceptance guidance includes QR codes, payment URLs and verification methods for incoming transfers.
- Fee abstraction: Solana documentation describes native support for designs in which the customer does not have to manage every fee detail, if the wallet and merchant integration implement it.
What you need as the customer
Use a wallet that supports Solana Pay requests and the token named by the café. Keep enough USDC for the order and enough SOL, unless the wallet or merchant has implemented fee abstraction, to cover the network fee. A wallet that merely displays USDC on another chain cannot pay a Solana request without the correct balance on Solana.

Before confirming, inspect the wallet’s request details. The merchant name, amount, token mint, recipient and any expiry or reference should agree with the order. If the wallet presents a generic transfer rather than a structured payment request, stop and ask the cashier to confirm the intended network.
Lightning payments
Why Lightning is still useful
Lightning is a network for sending Bitcoin near-instantly, including very small amounts, with minimal fees. A café can display a Lightning invoice as a QR code, or a compatible point-of-sale system can offer NFC. The customer scans or taps, the wallet pays the invoice, and the merchant receives a payment result without waiting for an on-chain Bitcoin confirmation.
Lightning improves speed and payment cost; it does not remove Bitcoin’s exchange-rate volatility. Unless the café or its processor converts immediately to fiat, the merchant is still exposed to the value of the Bitcoin received. The customer also needs a wallet that can pay Lightning invoices immediately, with enough spendable balance and any routing fee shown by the wallet.

When Lightning is the better choice
- The café’s sign, invoice or POS explicitly says Lightning, not merely “Bitcoin.”
- You already use a Lightning-enabled wallet and understand its balance and backup model.
- You value a Bitcoin-native payment and the merchant has a tested QR or NFC workflow.
- The invoice amount and expiry are visible, and the café can confirm settlement before you leave.
If the café accepts only on-chain Bitcoin, Lightning is not interchangeable with an ordinary Bitcoin address. Do not paste a Lightning invoice into an on-chain send screen or send on-chain funds to an invoice unless the wallet specifically supports a compatible conversion.
Managed point-of-sale crypto checkout
A managed processor can hide much of the wallet and settlement complexity. In the documented Square flow, the seller selects Bitcoin, displays a QR code, or accepts NFC from a Lightning-enabled wallet. The processor handles the checkout interface and gives the seller a payment status that can be tied to the sale.
Square’s current support schedule states a 0% processing fee for Bitcoin payments through December 31, 2026, followed by 1%. Those are processor terms for that service and period, not a general fee for every Bitcoin or Lightning transaction. A merchant should also check conversion, withdrawal, refund and settlement rules. A customer sees a simpler screen, but the café depends on the provider’s supported assets, network integrations and policy changes.
Questions to ask at a managed checkout
- Which assets and networks are enabled on this register?
- Is the displayed price fixed in local currency until the invoice expires?
- Does the café receive crypto, local currency or a choice of settlement?
- What processor fee applies today, and is a network fee added to the customer?
- How are voids, partial refunds and duplicate payments handled?
- Which receipt or transaction identifier should you keep?
Comparison of the main café payment routes
| Route | Price behavior | Typical customer experience | Settlement and fees | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USDC or another stablecoin on a supported chain | Intended to track a reference asset such as the U.S. dollar; de-pegging remains possible. | Wallet transfer, QR code or payment URL, depending on the merchant. | Depends on the chain and processor. The customer may need a network-fee token. | The café must support that exact token and chain; wrong-network transfers can fail. |
| USDC through Solana Pay | Dollar-referenced token combined with a fast Solana rail. | Scan a QR code or open a payment URL; the wallet presents a structured request. | Solana documentation estimates a 5,000-lamport base fee at about $0.0007 and a typical transfer in under one second. Priority fees and one-time token-account rent can vary. | Requires a Solana Pay-compatible wallet and merchant verification integration. |
| Lightning | Bitcoin value remains volatile unless the merchant converts to fiat. | Scan a Lightning invoice QR code or use NFC through a compatible POS. | Designed for near-instant, low-fee small payments; routing and wallet fees can vary. | Only works where the café supports Lightning and the wallet can pay the invoice. |
| Managed POS checkout | Depends on the asset selected and whether the processor converts it. | Processor-generated QR code or NFC flow at the register. | Provider terms apply. Square documents 0% Bitcoin processing through December 31, 2026 and 1% afterward. | Supported assets, settlement, refunds and fees are controlled by the provider. |
How to pay safely, step by step
- Ask before ordering. Say the exact asset and network: for example, “Do you accept USDC on Solana?” or “Do you accept a Lightning invoice?” Do not rely on a generic crypto logo.
- Check the quoted amount. Confirm whether the café prices in local currency, stablecoin units or Bitcoin and whether the amount expires after a stated time.
- Open a compatible wallet. Verify that the balance is on the required network. For Solana, check whether you have enough SOL for fees unless the checkout explicitly abstracts them. For Lightning, verify that the wallet can pay an invoice rather than only send on-chain Bitcoin.
- Scan or open the request. Use the merchant’s QR code or payment URL. Avoid manually typing an address when a structured request is available.
- Review every field. Match the merchant name, recipient, token, network, amount, reference and expiry. A QR code can encode a destination that looks plausible but is not the café’s current invoice.
- Approve once. Do not press pay repeatedly if the screen is slow. Wait for the wallet result and ask staff to check the register before retrying; duplicate payments may not be reversible.
- Wait for merchant confirmation. Keep the wallet confirmation and café receipt. A broadcast transaction is not always the same as a merchant-verified payment.
- Retain the record. Save the receipt, transaction identifier and exchange-rate information shown at checkout. These records help with refunds, disputes and any tax or accounting reporting required in your jurisdiction.
Common failure modes and fixes
The café says “crypto” but cannot name a network
Ask the cashier to show the payment screen or sign that identifies the token and network. If nobody can provide that information, use a conventional payment method rather than guessing. A compatible wallet cannot compensate for an undefined merchant route.
The wallet shows insufficient funds
Check both the token balance and the network-fee balance. USDC may be present on the wrong chain, or a Solana wallet may lack SOL for a fee. On Lightning, the balance may be unavailable for immediate routing even though the wallet displays a total balance. Do not bridge or swap at the counter unless you understand the additional delay and cost.

The payment is pending after approval
Do not send a second payment immediately. Show the wallet’s transaction or invoice status to the cashier and let the merchant’s system verify it. For a QR request, check whether the invoice expired. A processor may need to refresh the order rather than asking you to pay an old request.
The merchant cannot find the payment
Provide the receipt and transaction identifier, not a screenshot alone. Confirm that the token, chain and amount match the café’s request. If you sent on an unsupported network, contact the merchant and wallet provider promptly; recovery depends on control of the receiving address and is not guaranteed.
You need a refund
Ask how the café handles refunds before completing a large order or prepaid balance. Blockchain transfers generally cannot be canceled by the customer after confirmation. The merchant may need to send a new transfer, refund through its processor or return local currency, and the exchange rate may differ from the original payment.
Fees, settlement and accounting details
Compare the complete checkout cost, not just a network’s advertised base fee. The customer may encounter a blockchain fee, a variable priority or routing fee, a processor charge, a currency-conversion spread or a wallet swap fee. A merchant may separately pay for software, fiat settlement or chargeback and refund handling.
Recommended Free Tools
Settlement currency changes the practical risk. If the café keeps USDC or Bitcoin, it must account for the asset’s value and later conversion. If a processor converts automatically, the café gets simpler bookkeeping but accepts that provider’s rate, fee and settlement schedule. A receipt should identify the local-currency price, asset amount, exchange rate where relevant and transaction reference.

Decision guide: which alternative should you use?
Choose USDC on Solana Pay when
The café advertises Solana Pay and USDC, you want a dollar-like amount, and your wallet supports the request. This route combines a stablecoin with a QR or URL checkout and Solana’s documented fast transfer. Check the token account and fee requirements before reaching the register.
Choose Lightning when
The café already displays Lightning invoices or supports Lightning NFC and you have a wallet ready to pay. It is the most direct Bitcoin-native option for a small, fast transaction, but neither the merchant nor the customer should assume that it removes Bitcoin price risk.
Choose another supported stablecoin rail when
The café’s processor names a different stablecoin and network that your wallet supports. Match the merchant’s instructions exactly; a familiar ticker on the wrong chain is not an equivalent payment.
Use managed POS checkout when
The café relies on a processor-generated QR or NFC flow and you prefer a guided register experience. Read the displayed amount and expiry, then keep the processor receipt. The provider’s supported assets, fees and refund policy control the result.
Bottom line for café customers
Start with the café’s checkout, not with a token list. When it is explicitly supported, USDC on Solana Pay is a strong default because it pairs dollar-oriented pricing with QR payments, documented sub-second settlement and a low example base fee. Use Lightning when the café already supports it and you want a quick Bitcoin payment. In every case, verify the network, wallet balance, amount, expiry, settlement currency and refund path before approving; that checklist prevents more problems than switching between coins.
