Artificial intelligence can help organize formative feedback, but a teacher should review every consequential mark.
Why classrooms need more than an automated essay score
An essay grade is supposed to represent learning: the student’s argument, use of evidence, reasoning, organization, disciplinary conventions, and ability to communicate. A one-shot automated score can miss how the student arrived at the answer, whether the sources were understood, and whether the student can explain the ideas independently.

Automated essay-scoring research commonly evaluates essays of about 300 words, according to Ofqual’s 2026 discussion of the field. A classroom assignment may instead involve a research question, source evaluation, drafting, revision, reflection, and disciplinary choices. Before adopting any scoring tool, check whether the system’s tested construct matches the learning outcome you intend to assess.
Evidence also does not support a blanket validity claim for artificial-intelligence marking in high-stakes qualifications. Ofqual states that the use of AI as the sole mechanism for determining a student’s mark does not comply with its regulations. Its broader point is practical: validity, reliability, and fairness must be evaluated for the particular qualification and context, not assumed from a product demonstration.

AI-detection scores are not a remedy. A 2026 Scottish Qualifications Authority literature review states: “There is currently no AI detector that can differentiate between human and AI-generated texts with 100% accuracy.” A detector result can be a prompt for a conversation about process evidence; it is not sufficient evidence for a failing grade or misconduct finding.
Six alternatives compared
| Approach | What it measures best | Evidence students produce | Feedback and workload | Reliability safeguards | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Teacher-scored analytic rubric with moderation | Argument, evidence, reasoning, organization, and disciplinary conventions | Final essay scored against explicit criteria | Detailed feedback is possible; marking time remains with teachers | Anchor papers, calibration discussion, second marking, or moderation samples | Any graded essay, especially consequential work |
| Scaffolded process portfolio | Development of ideas, research decisions, revision, and learning over time | Question, research log, annotated sources, outline, drafts, revision memo, reflection, and final essay | Feedback arrives during drafting instead of only after submission; requires staged collection | Teacher knowledge of the learner’s writing history and behavior provides context | Research writing and assignments where authorship matters |
| Structured peer and self-assessment | Students’ ability to recognize and explain quality | Rubric-based comments, evidence citations, self-score, and revision plan | Distributes formative feedback; students learn evaluative literacy | Short criteria, examples, teacher moderation, and no sole reliance on peer scores | Draft review and formative stages |
| Oral examination or short-video defense | Conceptual understanding, source choices, and ownership of the argument | Thesis explanation, challenge-question response, source defense, or revision reflection | Short recordings or conversations can target key uncertainties; scheduling and accessibility need planning | Common prompts, preparation criteria, and an equivalent accessible pathway | High-stakes work or a representative sample |
| Supervised in-class writing | Independent performance under controlled conditions | Timed paper or documented digital writing session | Fast evidence of unaided performance; less opportunity for extended research | Controlled room or digital environment and a task representative of the course | Authorship checks and sampled high-stakes decisions |
| AI-assisted formative feedback with human sign-off | Revision guidance and recurring patterns, not final judgment | Teacher-checked comments, clarified wording, transcription, or pattern summaries | Can speed drafting of feedback; teacher must check and edit every output | Explicit consent, institutional approval, data-retention basis, and teacher ownership of marks | Low- or medium-stakes feedback when privacy requirements are met |
Make the analytic rubric the foundation
A rubric is the control surface for fairness. Start with the learning outcomes, then describe observable performance rather than trying to identify whether prose was written by a person or a tool. Typical criteria include the quality of the argument, relevance and integration of evidence, reasoning, organization, and disciplinary conventions. Adjust the criteria to the subject: a history essay may require contextualization and source criticism, while a science report may require interpretation of data and methodological reasoning.
Write criteria students can act on
- Describe what a reader can see in the work, such as a claim that is specific enough to test or evidence that is interpreted rather than merely quoted.
- Separate dimensions that require different feedback. Combining argument, grammar, and citation into one broad impression makes it harder to explain a mark.
- Use performance descriptions at each level that distinguish quality, not just effort or length.
- Publish the rubric before students begin and use the same language in lessons, peer review, and teacher comments.
Calibrate and moderate
- Select several anchor papers that represent the range of quality expected for the assignment.
- Score them independently with the rubric, then hold a short calibration discussion about disagreements and borderline cases.
- Record the agreed interpretation of each criterion and keep the anchors available during marking.
- Second-mark a sample or moderate a sample from each class, level, or marker. Investigate large differences rather than averaging them away without discussion.
- Review whether the task and rubric actually elicit the intended learning. Ofqual emphasizes that validity, reliability, and fairness are specific to the qualification and context.
Moderation is not a cosmetic final check. It reveals ambiguous criteria, uneven access to resources, and tasks that reward polished surface features more than the intended reasoning.

Use a scaffolded process portfolio to make thinking visible
A process portfolio replaces the fiction that a final essay is the whole learning event. It gives the teacher a timeline of decisions and gives students several chances to receive guidance before the mark is fixed. The Scottish Qualifications Authority review highlights the importance of knowing learners’ writing history and behavior when interpreting writing evidence.

Recommended portfolio sequence
- Question or proposal: Students state the question, provisional claim, audience, and scope. Ask them to identify what would count as a satisfactory answer.
- Research log: Students record searches, dead ends, source choices, and questions that changed. The log should show decisions, not just a list of links.
- Annotated sources: For each important source, students summarize the relevant idea, assess its credibility for the assignment, and explain how it may support or challenge the claim.
- Outline: Require a claim-evidence-reasoning map or an equivalent disciplinary plan. This makes missing steps visible before paragraphs are polished.
- Drafts: Keep at least one substantive draft and identify what feedback the student is seeking. Version history can be useful evidence, but it should not replace the intellectual content of the portfolio.
- Revision memo: Students name the feedback they used, the changes they made, and any advice they rejected with a reason.
- Final essay and reflection: The final submission is scored with the analytic rubric; the reflection explains what the student now understands and what remains uncertain.
Grade the process without letting paperwork take over
The portfolio can be assessed with checkpoints rather than a separate high-stakes score for every artifact. Give brief completion or formative comments on early stages, reserve detailed rubric scoring for the final essay, and use the revision memo to judge whether feedback was understood. The exact weighting should follow the course outcomes and local policy; the essential design choice is that process evidence informs interpretation of the final writing.
Keep requirements proportionate. A short research log and one meaningful revision can reveal more than several pages of reflective prose. Provide an equivalent format for students who use assistive technology or who cannot produce a conventional handwritten record.
Teach peer and self-assessment as a structured skill
Unstructured peer grading is noisy and can reproduce popularity or confidence effects. Structured review turns it into practice in applying criteria. Give reviewers a short rubric, require comments tied to specific passages, and ask each student to write a revision plan.
A reliable peer-review cycle
- Model the process with an anchor paragraph. Demonstrate how to identify a claim, locate the evidence, and explain whether the reasoning connects them.
- Assign two or more focused questions from the rubric, such as whether the thesis answers the prompt and whether each major source is interpreted.
- Require evidence-based comments: the reviewer quotes or points to a location, describes the criterion, and suggests a next step.
- Have the writer summarize which advice will be used and why. This prevents comments from becoming a checklist that nobody reads.
- Use peer scores as formative information or as one moderated component, never as the sole high-stakes grade.
Self-assessment should use the same rubric as the teacher. Comparing the student’s self-score with the teacher’s score creates a conversation about standards and metacognition without treating disagreement as dishonesty.

Add an oral or short-video defense when understanding matters
A brief defense tests whether the student can explain the central ideas without relying on a polished page. OECD guidance identifies oral examinations and short videos as ways to foreground conceptual understanding and make full outsourcing to generative AI harder.
Prompt designs that reveal understanding
- Explain the thesis in your own words and identify the strongest piece of evidence.
- Defend one source choice and describe a source that could have changed your conclusion.
- Respond to a challenge question that asks what would happen if an assumption changed.
- Describe one major revision and explain how it improved the reasoning rather than merely correcting wording.
Use a common prompt set and a short preparation guide. Score the explanation against published criteria such as conceptual accuracy, evidence use, and response to questions. Offer an accessible equivalent, such as a live conversation, recorded audio, signed response, or written defense, where disability, language, connectivity, or anxiety makes one format unsuitable. The goal is equivalent evidence, not a surprise performance test.
Use supervised writing selectively
A timed paper or controlled digital session provides a direct sample of independent performance. It is useful when authorship is disputed or when a high-stakes decision needs corroboration, but it should represent the course rather than replace extended writing. Supervised writing cannot by itself show research depth, revision skill, or the ability to work over time.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDesign a fair supervised sample
- Use a prompt that draws on concepts already taught and allows planning time.
- State permitted materials and technology in advance. A documented digital environment can control access to generative tools without pretending that all writing occurs under test conditions.
- Make the sample long enough to show reasoning but short enough to fit the scheduled session.
- Compare the sample with the portfolio and final essay as contextual evidence, not as an automatic authenticity verdict.
- Provide approved accommodations and an equivalent non-digital pathway where needed.
Use AI for formative feedback, never as the final judge
AI can reduce clerical work when a teacher remains accountable. Possible uses include drafting rubric-aligned comments, clarifying the wording of feedback, transcribing verbal comments, or summarizing recurring class-wide patterns. These are assistance tasks; they do not transfer the assessment decision.

A human-sign-off workflow
- Remove unnecessary identifying information and check whether institutional policy permits the proposed tool.
- Obtain explicit consent before uploading student work. King’s guidance warns against uploading student work without explicit consent and forethought.
- Use a tightly scoped prompt that names the rubric criterion and asks for evidence-based suggestions, not a grade or misconduct decision.
- Read every generated comment against the essay and the rubric. Correct factual errors, invented evidence, tone problems, and advice that does not fit the assignment.
- Send students the teacher-approved feedback and explain how to act on it. Keep the consequential mark under teacher control.
- Document what data was used, how long it is retained, and how a student can ask questions or decline where an alternative is available.
OECD’s 2025 formulation is direct: “Algorithms may suggest; teachers must decide. Teachers should not outsource assessment to AI.” If a system produces a number that appears objective, treat it as an internal prompt for review rather than as an answer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Match the combination to the stakes
Routine classroom essays
Use the analytic rubric, a short process checkpoint, and structured peer or self-assessment. Return feedback while revision is still possible. A final teacher score should reflect the published criteria, with process artifacts used to understand development and resolve questions.
Research projects and capstones
Use the full portfolio sequence, moderation, and a revision memo. Add an oral or video defense when students must demonstrate ownership of sources and conclusions. This combination captures both the extended work and the student’s ability to explain it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHigh-stakes or disputed decisions
Use calibrated teacher marking and moderation, then corroborate with a supervised writing sample or defense. Review the complete evidence before deciding. A detector percentage or an automated score should never be the sole basis for a consequential mark.

Protect fairness, accessibility, and privacy
Assess outcomes, not suspicion
TEQSA advises removing “gotcha” language and treating suspicion as insufficient evidence. If AI use is not itself a learning outcome, grade the submitted work against the normal criteria and provide a non-AI route where AI is optional. If responsible AI use is an explicit outcome, state what is permitted, what must be acknowledged, and how process evidence will be assessed.
Provide equivalent pathways
Every oral, video, digital, or supervised requirement needs an accessible alternative that produces comparable evidence. Consider captioning, transcription, sign-language interpretation, extra time, assistive technology, low-bandwidth submission, and a written or live option. Publish these pathways before the assignment, not after a student encounters a barrier.
Limit data exposure
Do not upload identifiable student work to an AI service without explicit consent, institutional approval, and a clear data-retention basis. Check whether the service uses submissions for training, where data is stored, who can access it, and how deletion requests work. If those answers are unclear, keep the feedback process local or use a non-AI method.
A practical implementation plan
- Define the construct: Write the learning outcomes in observable terms and list the evidence that would demonstrate each one.
- Build the rubric: Separate argument, evidence, reasoning, organization, and conventions where those dimensions matter. Add subject-specific criteria rather than generic prose polish.
- Design the process: Choose the smallest set of checkpoints that reveals question formation, source use, drafting, and revision.
- Prepare anchors: Select sample work, calibrate with other markers, and record decisions about borderline cases.
- Teach review: Model one peer-review exchange and require passage-specific comments plus a revision plan.
- Add corroboration by risk: Use an oral defense or supervised sample for assignments where independent performance or authorship is consequential.
- Set AI rules: State whether AI is allowed, limited, or prohibited for each stage; require acknowledgement where applicable; and publish a non-AI route.
- Moderate and improve: Review score patterns, student access, feedback usefulness, and workload after the assignment. Revise the task or rubric when the evidence shows a mismatch.
What to avoid
- Do not let an automated score determine the mark. Ofqual says sole-mechanism AI marking does not comply with its regulations for the contexts covered by its guidance.
- Do not treat detector output as proof. The SQA review’s finding about the absence of a 100%-accurate detector makes contextual evidence essential.
- Do not write criteria around catching students. Criteria should describe the learning outcome and the quality of the work.
- Do not make peer scores the only high-stakes evidence. Students need explicit criteria, examples, and teacher moderation.
- Do not upload identifiable work casually. Consent, approval, retention, and access must be settled before using an external AI service.
- Do not add an oral or supervised task as a surprise. Explain its purpose, criteria, preparation, accommodations, and equivalent options in advance.
Bottom line
A fair replacement for automated essay grading is a layered assessment system: a transparent analytic rubric, moderated teacher judgment, process evidence, structured peer and self-assessment, and an oral or supervised component when the stakes justify it. AI may help a teacher prepare formative feedback, but the teacher must validate the evidence and own every consequential decision.
