The right choice depends on whether you want to leave Apple Home entirely, which devices you already own, and whether your accessories use Matter over Wi-Fi or Thread. If you want to keep using Apple Home, choosing a different platform controller will not replace an Apple Home hub.
Choose based on what you want to replace
“Smart-home hub” can mean a platform controller, a speaker or display that includes controller functions, a router, or software running on a computer. Those roles overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A Thread border router, for example, connects a Thread mesh to the local IP network; it is not automatically a controller for every smart-home platform.

- Keep Apple Home: Follow Apple’s HomePod or Apple TV setup guidance. A Google or Alexa hub does not become an Apple Home hub.
- Move to another consumer platform: Consider Google Home or Alexa, especially if you already use their speakers, displays, or other devices.
- Mix brands and platforms: SmartThings is another platform to consider. Matter multi-admin may let a compatible accessory be added to more than one platform.
- Customize and integrate: Home Assistant offers a software-centered option for people comfortable managing integrations and local-network settings.
These choices reflect platform fit and documented compatibility, not a guarantee that every device or feature will work on every system. Check the accessory’s exact model and the platform’s support before switching.

| Option | What it suits | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Google Home | People already using Google Home or Nest products who want a consumer platform with documented Matter support. | Exact hub model and whether it supports Thread as well as Wi-Fi Matter. Google’s compatibility guide distinguishes the two. |
| Amazon Alexa | People who prefer Alexa or want a screen-based Echo option. | Exact Echo generation and protocol support. TP-Link’s compatibility list, collected in March 2026, includes multiple Echo devices as Alexa Matter hubs; that list does not establish every model’s Thread or Zigbee capabilities. |
| Samsung SmartThings | Mixed-brand homes considering a Matter-compatible platform. | Specific current hub model and radio capabilities: not stated in the cited TP-Link Matter guide, which lists SmartThings as a compatible platform. |
| Home Assistant | Technically confident users who want a configurable, software-centered controller. | Integration needs, Thread border-router hardware if using Thread accessories, and local IPv6 and multicast behavior. |
| Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro | A specialized camera-plus-hub setup where its particular functions and accessory support fit. | Accessory compatibility and regional availability. Tom’s Guide’s September 23, 2026 roundup describes it as a Matter controller, Thread-capable, a Zigbee hub, and offering basic HomeKit support. |
Google Home: match the hub to your accessories
Google’s Matter guidance says a Matter hub is needed to add Matter devices to Google Home and to control them locally and remotely. Its listed hub devices do not all support the same radios, so check the exact model rather than assuming that every Nest or Google speaker includes Thread.

For Matter over Wi-Fi only
Google lists Nest Audio, Nest Mini, Google Home Mini, Google Home, and the first-generation Nest Hub as Wi-Fi-only Matter hubs. These devices do not provide the Thread border-router function needed for Thread-based accessories.
For Matter over Wi-Fi and Thread
Google’s compatibility guide lists Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, Google TV Streamer (4K), and Google Home Speaker (2026) as supporting Matter over Wi-Fi and Thread. This makes the exact model especially important if your home has Thread accessories.
Google also says IPv6 must be enabled for Matter to work properly. If you are troubleshooting setup, check that requirement as well as the device’s radio support.

Amazon Alexa: a platform alternative with Echo hub options
Alexa is a credible option if you already use Echo devices or want smart-home controls on a display. TP-Link’s Matter compatibility list, collected in March 2026, includes several Echo generations and Echo Show models as Alexa Matter hubs. In a September 23, 2026 roundup, Tom’s Guide named the Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) its overall smart-home hub pick.
Those references support considering Echo devices for Alexa Matter control, but they do not establish Thread or Zigbee support for every generation. Before buying or moving accessories, verify the exact model’s specifications and whether they cover the protocol your devices use.
SmartThings: consider it for a mixed-brand home
TP-Link lists SmartThings alongside Alexa, Google Home, and Apple Home as a platform for its Matter devices, and describes Matter multi-admin. That makes SmartThings worth considering if your goal is a different platform for compatible accessories, particularly in a home that already uses SmartThings.

The cited compatibility information does not identify a best current SmartThings hub model or establish its exact radio capabilities. Check the specifications for the particular model you are considering rather than inferring Thread or other radio support from the platform name.
Home Assistant: more control, more setup responsibility
Home Assistant can control Matter devices, but it is a better fit for people willing to configure integrations and troubleshoot their home network. For Thread-based Matter accessories, it also needs a Thread border router. Home Assistant’s documentation gives a Nest Hub (2nd gen), HomePod mini, or Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 running OpenThread Border Router software as examples of ways to provide that role.
Matter discovery and commissioning depend on local networking. Home Assistant documents IPv6 and multicast requirements and warns that VLAN separation or multicast filtering can interfere. If you do not want to manage those network details, a consumer platform device may be a simpler choice.

Understand Matter, Thread, and multi-admin before migrating
Matter does not mean every feature is shared
Matter is an interoperability standard supported by several major smart-home platforms. It can make compatible accessories available across platforms, but it does not guarantee that every device, feature, or setup path works identically in each app.
For its own Matter-enabled products, TP-Link recommends setting devices up in the Tapo or Kasa app first for full feature access, then adding them to other compatible apps as desired. Check the accessory maker’s instructions for your device rather than assuming that adding it through any one app exposes every feature elsewhere.

Thread is a network, not another name for Matter
Thread is a low-power mesh network for smart-home devices. A Thread border router connects that network to the local IP network. Thread mesh forwarding can extend coverage and add redundancy, but a device needs suitable Thread hardware and network support to participate. A Wi-Fi-only Matter hub does not provide that border-router function.

Multi-admin can avoid an all-at-once switch
Matter multi-admin can let a supported accessory be added to more than one compatible platform. That may let you retain Apple Home for some devices while trying Google Home, Alexa, or SmartThings for others. Each platform still needs its own controller and must support the particular device; multi-admin does not turn a non-Apple hub into an Apple Home hub.
A practical way to choose and switch
- List the devices you rely on. Include their exact models and note whether each uses Matter over Wi-Fi, Matter over Thread, or another connection. Check cameras, locks, sensors, and other devices individually.
- Decide whether Apple Home stays. If it does, keep an Apple Home hub for Apple Home functions and use another platform only for compatible devices. If you are leaving, choose the new platform before resetting or removing accessories.
- Match the controller to the protocol. For Thread-based Matter, confirm that the setup includes a Thread border router. Do not treat a Wi-Fi-only Matter hub as a substitute.
- Check platform-specific features. Confirm that the functions you use—not just basic on/off control—are available for your device in the new platform.
- Set up one compatible device first. Follow its manufacturer’s recommended app sequence. If you want it in more than one platform, use the accessory’s Matter multi-admin instructions where supported.
- Verify control before migrating more devices. Test the functions you care about in the new app, and confirm remote access if you need it. Keep the original setup available until the replacement works as expected.
Compatibility and product availability can change by model, firmware, and region. The Google and Apple guidance cited here is current as of October 13, 2026; the Echo compatibility list reflects TP-Link’s March 2026 collection, and the Aqara comparison is from Tom’s Guide’s September 23, 2026 roundup.
