If you want to move beyond an Alexa-equipped tablet, first decide whether you need a portable tablet or a dedicated smart display. The right choice also depends on your existing smart-home platform and the video-calling service your contacts use.

A dedicated smart display is built around voice interaction and a persistent screen for household controls and glanceable information. Lenovo’s US product page documents its Smart Display 7, 8, and 10 as Google Assistant devices with front cameras, video calling, smart-home voice control, a camera shutter, and microphone mute. Choose a tablet for apps and portability
A general-purpose tablet can move between rooms and run apps beyond smart-home controls. Amazon describes its Fire tablets as supporting Alexa, apps, entertainment, and video calls. That keeps the device in Amazon’s ecosystem, however, and Amazon does not describe Fire tablets as duplicating the full experience of a dedicated Echo Show. Check ecosystem compatibility before buying
Start with the smart-home platform you already use, whether that is Google Home, Alexa, Apple Home, SmartThings, or another system. Then confirm that the specific lights, cameras, locks, appliances, and routines you want to control work with the device and platform you are considering. Broad compatibility claims do not establish that every device or feature will work in your setup.

Lenovo’s product page says, “With Lenovo Smart Display, you can use your voice to control over 30,000 household products.” That is Lenovo’s undated vendor claim, not an independent or current compatibility measurement. Confirm that video calls will reach the people you call
A camera does not guarantee that a device can call your family or colleagues. Check the exact calling service, account requirements, country availability, and whether your contacts can receive calls on their own devices. Lenovo’s page describes Google Duo calling on its Smart Displays, but that manufacturer description does not establish current service support. For any model, verify the present calling experience for your region and contacts before purchase.

Lenovo’s US product page lists these screen sizes and front-camera specifications and describes 720p video calling for all three. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent test results.

- Feature support: Confirm that calling and smart-home features remain supported in your region, especially for older models.
- Specific devices: Verify compatibility for every household device you need to control rather than assuming a platform supports all features of a device.
Amazon’s device overview describes Echo Show 8, Echo Show 11, and Echo Hub as screen devices for glanceable information, and says Echo devices control smart-home devices. It separately describes Fire HD 8, Fire HD 10, and Fire Max 11 as tablets supporting apps, entertainment, Alexa, and video calls.
